Re: [Elecraft] K2 Microphone Suggestions?
Hi Dave (Hey Phil) I picked up a new Kenwood MC43S hand mic a year ago for about $50. Works great right out of the box with my K3 with no connector change necessary. It is very lightweight and compact. I needed a very lightweight hand mic for my SOTA activations. I have a number of hand and desk mics, but they all weighed too much to add them to my backpack. So, I took a small mic from a late-70s vintage Kenwood 2m rig I had on the shelf, put a new connector (from Radio Shack) on it and gave it a go. This 500 ohm dynamic mic works well with my K2 and it's small and light (about 1/4 lb). It even got good audio reports from the audio oriented gang on 14.178MHz. Not a hand mic, but the mic on the Yamaha CM500 headset would work VERY well with a K2. The K2 is low on audio gain, and the CM500 is a pretty hot mic, so it will compensate. See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/HamInterfacing.pdf for guidance in connecting it. You will need to buy a mic plug, 1/8-in jack, and a small resistor of 4.7K-6.8K to make a simple adapter. You want to find a resistor small enough to fit in the mic connector. And you will need to consult the K2 schematic to see which pin is audio in and which pin is +8VDC. Wiring is simple. The mic connects between the audio input and the chassis (shell). The resistor goes between the V+ pin and the audio input. The pdf tells you a part number for the 1/8-in jack and where to buy it. 73, JimK9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Positioning of the 4-400s
One may get the dreaded hum if one puts the KPA500 up on end, since the weight of the internal transformer is now supported differently. The dreaded hum apparently can be worrisome, having been recently blamed for objects disappearing off the desk, mouth and eye twitches, insomnia, skin rashes, temporary and permanent insanity, barking fits among neighborhood dogs, PMS-like symptoms, and jerky-sounding CW from a paddle. That was horizontally polarized hum. Who knows how bad vertical could be... 73, Guy. On Fri, Oct 7, 2011 at 7:48 AM, Jim Rhodes jimk...@gmail.com wrote: No grids to worry about in the KPA500! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 DSP upgrade
Holger, If you do the DSP board exchange, you do not have to be concerned about the level of your current board - you will receive the latest level DSP board in the exchange.. I believe the LPF can be added to any DSP board level. For other upgrades, consult the list at the Elecraft website to see either the serial number range or the cut-in date for each change - that should tell you which upgrade kits are needed for your K3. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/7/2011 12:49 PM, DL9HDA wrote: Hi, but which Revision do I have? Re: [Elecraft] Using Micro Band Decoder and computer logging at same time w/K3
George, Whether a Y adapter will work or not depends on your band decoder. Most do not issue any commands on the RS-232 bus, they only listen and respond accordingly. Check with the manufacturer of the decoder to know for certain - if the decoder connects only receivers to the RS-232 lines, it will work fine. With RS-232, many receivers on a signalling line are possible, but if more than one driver is present, things can get confused (the drivers will fight each other). 73, Don W3FPR On 10/7/2011 2:20 PM, george wrote: I have my Micro Band Decoder attached the RS-232 port of the K3 to auto change antennas. Now I would like to hook the K3 to my computer for logging.I don’t think they will share a port as both would be using the same com port if a Y was used.Any suggestions that would be simple to implement or should I just forget about both at same time. [Elecraft] bug debouncing on K2
I am using a bug with my K2 and the auto detect is not working very well. I already added a cap to the 2 diodes but it doesn't seem to do the job. Any suggestions? [Elecraft] Send a simple tone
Dear Group. I need to figure out how to send a simple tone output from the K3 to my amp to be able to check power output. I dont have a CW keyer and can not figure out how to set up a simple switch to key a tone. I ultimatly want to plot K3 drive power to amp output power for each of the bands. Re: [Elecraft] Send a simple tone
Dennis, One can just hit TUNE, but the power output MAY be controlled by the menu TUN PWR menu setting. I would suggest that Don wire up a switch. A SPST switch and a 1/4 inch plug plus some wire are all that is needed. Wire one side of the switch to the tip of the phone plug, and the other side to the sleeve. Plug it into the KEY jack and close the switch. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/7/2011 5:49 PM, Dennis Moore wrote: Can't you just hit TUNE? 73, Dennis NJ6G On 10/7/2011 2:42 PM, gold...@charter.net wrote: Dear Group. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Outboard Amplifier options
Curt, Not a lot of wiring at all. There are only 2 cables - one is the coax to connect the KPA100 to the base K2 (yes, you have to drill a hole into the rear panel of the EC2 enclosure to accept a BNC jack. I would also suggest that you solder the header that normally is placed on the RF Board onto the back of this BNC jack so you can plug in the normal RF input cable to the KPA100. The 2nd cable is to connect the KIO2 in the base K2 to the KPA100. It is built just like the cable shown in the KAT100 manual - yes I know you will not have the KAT100, but the cable instructions are in that manual, and you can download it. So two cables to connect and disconnect, and that is all. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/7/2011 5:46 PM, Curt wrote: My K2/10 is most times sufficient for DX. Curt, The KIO2 is not actually a requirement, but it does provide the K2 to KPA100 signals necessary. There are substitutes for the KIO2 for those who would like to make the appropriate connections inside their K2 between the Control Board P4 and a connector to the outside of the base K2. [Elecraft] Diversity receive with ant1 and ant2?
Hi, I have a question about the diversity mode where you use ant1 on the main receiver and ant2 on the sub. IN the manual it says This requires that the two antennas connected to the KAT3 be well isolated from each other. If not, the sub receiver’s carrier-operated relay may turn on during transmit. How does one know that this is the case? I am currently using this and it seems to operate as always. My antenna 1 is a dipole in the attic and antenna 2 is a vertical separated about 30 feet apart. Re: [Elecraft] Diversity receive with ant1 and ant2?
If you hear the COR relay clicking while transmitting, you do not have enough isolation between the TX and RX antennas (or your power is greater than the isolation of the antennas will permit). 73, Don W3FPR On 10/7/2011 11:31 PM, tomb18 wrote: Hi, I have a question about the diversity mode where you use ant1 on the main receiver and ant2 on the sub. [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 DSP upgrade
Hello Holger, Don is correct. Do all the modifications for your early K3 #283. Usually, the first kg is the most expensive in terms of shipping costs from US to Germany. Therefore, if you order ALL the modification parts from Elecraft at one go, there will be savings in shipping cost - the heavier, the cheaper in terms of US$ per kg. http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_app_notes.htm Please read the above weblink about modifications carefully. You will then agree with both Don and myself that ALL modifcations are applicable to your K3. Don't be frightened by the modification work. They all should be within normal soldering skills. I am not a radio man by profession but still can handle the soldering work.
