If you want to make contacts with a QRP station you need to pay a lot

Yes, you must go to the K3 menu setting for PTT-KEY and set it to match

You could always copy the preamp section of the KAF2 on a
small piece of .1 perf board and install it on the audio
filter headers. It would be all of one IC and half a dozen
leaded components. My guess is that you could do it all for
less than $20 even if you needed to buy all new parts at

Hi all,
Is anyone using the latest version of the Heil Goldline mic with their K3? I
have to max out (60) the mic gain when I try to use the HC-5.1 narrow element.
I've tried both H and L settings with no bias in the menu. The wide element
works just fine with a mic gain of 30. I'm almost
My first thought on the audio was to get some efficient earbuds. Lightweight
and cheap.
Over on the KX3 list, people like the Chill Pill powered speakers.
I know it is a second box, but the Hardrock 50 amp has been getting good
reviews. You would not need to get it out except in an emergency,
It has worked so well that I haven't had the urge to make a new cable
to connect my SignaLink USB's keying output to the rig. YMMV
Signalink USB does not have a USB keying output - its PTT is derived
via VOX built into the device.

Hi Mike,
WSJT-X is able to interface with DXLabs Commander and use CAT to key the
rig. Or you can use RTS/DTR (if you dont use DXLabs) but you must set
PTT-KEY accordingly.

Quite true on HF.
3dB often matters doing weak signal work on 6 meters and up, and sometimes
on 10 meters, but on HF there are too many other variables, QSB, etc.
Back in the 30's and 40's the Radio Engineering texts used to list 6 dB as
the minimum change one might expect to detect by ear on
I think there is a lot of evidence that 3dB does not matter. 10dB
matters. 6dB might matter.
My thoughts on this are that if 3 dB mattered much, then QRP, down 13
dB from 100w and 23 dB from a KW, would not work at all, or at least
not often. But we all know that QRP does work.
Now . . .

I've never used anything but VOX to key my rig in SSB or digital modes,

Remember -- the K3 has a built-in TX delay that very effectively
prevents hot-switching of the relays in a power amp. The delay is
also adjustable from a menu, so if, for example, you're switching a
mast- mounted preamp with a slow relay, you can provide a little more
delay.
But if you extend

This argument will never die.
But remember the last time you called CQ and a station came back that you could hear, but
not copy. (I'm thinking CW, but it also applies to SSB).

I stand corrected. Must have thought that was the answer when I danced around
the necessary value on the KAT500 when the KAT3 zeroed right in for a low
SWR.
Sorry, and thanks for the correction.

I maintain that even ONE dB matters in this situation.

The original question was increasing power from 10W to 20W on a K2 used as an
emergency communication source for serious backcountry trips (multi-day

What voltage do you measure on the power cable at the rig end?

This is part of the problem. I'm at another QTH without any equipment so

Using a switch for your three devices' RS232 connections reduces the number
of parts on the desk and the number of COMn allocations in your O/S. It may
work for you if your only use for RS232 is occasional firmware updates. In
fact, for that you could lose the switch, too, and just swap

Gary,
Power supplies are usually fused on the output. The fuse may have blown due to

Fuses sometimes oxidize internally, and will blow at lower than rated value.
