[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-04-14 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Hopefully a few of you will remember the radio play: Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy.  It preceded the book by about a year.  Then on to
both television and to the movies.  But it began life as a multilayer
radiophonic tour de force in 1978.  The final episode of the Hexagonal
Phase of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was broadcast a few days
ago.  I am not sure how long they will be available for replay.  These
episodes are not as layered but even Zaphod has moderated a little with
age (and too many Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters).  If you are at all
interested look here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03v379k/episodes/player The Vogons are
quite ready to destroy something so get them while you can.

Our sun has one tiny speck on it but it has been rather windy
lately.  Maybe conditions will be better than they were last week.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

2018-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Keith,

You can already do that with a simple stereo cable to connect the
KX2/KX3 PHONES jack to your computer soundcard input.

The computer soundcard level can be changed without varying the KX2/KX3
AF gain.

I've built a prototype powered external speaker for the KX3, and would
like some feedback on what folks would desire in terms of features, and
whether folks would want to own one.

The speaker currently is designed to match the overall look of the KX3
and PX3, and accept similar third-party panels and covers as for the KX
line. Presently, it uses the same legs and feet as the KX3 and PX3, and
is the same height and depth as those. There is one USB port for
charging the internal lithium battery, and input and output stereo
jacks. The speaker is mono. The output jack redirects the right channel
from the stereo input for a second speaker, just like with the Elecraft
SP3 and other similar external speakers. The speaker is amplified.

The SPX3 puts out a maximum of 3W, and is about as loud as any external
radio speaker gets. Volume is adjusted by the KX3. It plugs into the KX3
PHONES jack. There is a built-in low pass filter to reduce noise and
improve the listening experience.

The prototype, as you'll see in pictures in the links below, is slightly
narrower than the expected finished product. The speaker driver and
on/off switch are both waterproof, but - just like the KX3 and PX3 - the
case isn't. So, don't drop it in a lake. It will handle all conditions
appropriate for the KX3, and is meant for indoor and outdoor use. Having
matched the case design so closely to the KX3, it isn't as airtight as
I'd like it, so the next prototype will have the case halves join in a
more customary way, but remain the same dimensions and overall look.
This will also improve ingress protection.

You'll see the speaker is not a polished finished product yet, as it's a
rough first prototype made by hand. Your feedback will assure the final
product is what you want gracing your portable shack.

Please note, the KX3 in the photo is only to demonstrate the speaker.

All feedback is welcome. Please let me know which reasonable
enhancements or simplifications you'd like to see.
Examples:
* Would you want an output USB port to use the speaker to charge your
phone?
* Would you want to dispense with the built-in battery, and run it
entirely from external power?
* Would you want a second passive speaker driven by the first to save on
weight and cost? That is, a SPX3A (active, with battery, charger, and
amp) and SPX3P (passive, with only speaker driver)
* If you're a KX2 user, would you like me to produce the SPX2 (also in
development)?

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-14 Thread Bill Frantz
When I launched the K3 utility, I got a message saying in
essence, that it was using obsolete technology. It referenced
 which says that soon
32 bit applications will not run. To quote:

"Starting with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4, apps that have not
been updated to use 64-bit processes produce a one-time alert
when opened. This gives users advance notice that they are
running 32-bit software, which will not be compatible with macOS
in the future."

They don't say when the change will be effective, but the clock
is ticking.

Re: [Elecraft] [PX3][PX3HDMI][P3] PX3 to HDMI Large Screen; and Decoded Text to Native P3 Screen

2018-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jack,

The PX3 has no capability for a large monitor. The USB jack is for a
keyboard. That means there is no way to connect a large monitor.

The P3 (used with the K3 and other radios with an IF output) does have
an option to use an SVGA monitor, but that operates from the transceiver
output, not the RX IQ baseband signals.

You can however connect the RX IQ output to a computer soundcard and the
KXUSB to run a panadapter application on the computer. NaP3 and Win4K3
are two, HDSDR may be another. If you then interface your computer with
an HDMI monitor, then you may have what you want.

I know the capability exists, but I am not currently using those
applications. If you have trouble with setup or operation, consult the
forums for that particular software.

CW mode, REC - M1 - REC, and M1 is cleared.

Re: [Elecraft] Clear programmable Macro buttons

2018-04-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Michael,

If you have no DVR messages recorded, there should be nothing in the
M1-M4 message memories for voice modes - if there is, whatever is stored
is of no use and can be ignored (no need to clear them). You can still
record CW messages for CW and DATA modes if you switch to that mode.
Or, you can use the CW message entries available in K3 Utility. If
recording for possible use with DATA modes, put a "|" character at the
end of the text. It will be ignored for CW, but on DATA modes it will
cause an immediate return the receive without a 4 second "diddle" time.

You may use K3 Utility to store CW and DATA mode messages if your CW
keying is not perfect.

The M1-M4 buttons can also be used for frequency, mode, etc. storage and
retrieved with a M>V button then a tap on the M1-M4 button.
I use the M1 button to store a frequency and mode for CW in the middle
of the CW band segment, M2 for a frequency in the SSB band segment and
M3 for a frequency in the DATA mode segment. I reserve M4 for a
frequency I run across while scanning the band and record any frequency
I want to return to quickly. Those are per band memory buttons.

The frequency, mode M1-M4 buttons do not interfere with the use of the
buttons for retrieving message storage.

[Elecraft] Clear programmable Macro buttons

2018-04-14 Thread Michael Blake
I do not have the DVR option in my K3s but have used two of the buttons, M1 &
M2, as programmable macro buttons. I would like to clear these buttons but
have not found a way to do so.

The user guide says to press “REC” then the button you wish to clear “M1” then
“REC” a second time. It says this will return the button to the previously
recorded audio recording but since I do not have the DVR it does not seem to
work.

How do I actually clear “M1” and “M2” so that if I press them it says “NO DVR” ?

OK, found the key to enabling the external 10 MHz source to the K3EXREF and
K144XV. This works FB now. no need for advice or comment.

When I turn the radio on, most of the time the LCD screen is very bright
with the normal display barely visible and faint. I do not know if this is
10 times out of 10 or 4 out of 10 as I have not done an exhaustive
experiment. Advice and comment needed, hi.

I need to take another look at LCD ADJ and LCD BRT to see if something is
amiss.

[Elecraft] new K3S display issue

2018-04-14 Thread Jim Spears
I have a recently assembled very basic K3S which suddenly developed,
overnight, an issue with the display. I turned it on this morning and the
display was completely blank, fully lit as in not dark. It stayed blank for
a bit so I turned it off. When I turned it back on, some pixels were dark
but it was mostly blank. I cycled power again and it came back to normal
state.

This is of course, Saturday, and home base is not available. Has anyone
seen this before and can point me to something I can do while waiting for
home base to open Monday.

The radio has the following options: K3EXREF, K144XV and the module tying
the K144XV to the K3EXREF controlled synthesizer.

A second problem has also surfaced, the blinking asterisk indicating that a
suitable signal from the external 10 MHz source is not making it into the
system. The 10 MHz source is OK as it works fine with another K3. There
must be a connection problem inside the radio. Unless there is something I
need to do to enable it that I missed.

Again, this is a 10 watt K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

2018-04-14 Thread Robert Morris
I just found the message at the bottom from Bob N3MNT in the online
archive. I don't know why it wasn't emailed to me. Here's my response:

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your inquiry.

The first prototype, though fully functional, is a proof of concept, and
far from the final product. I'm making changes to the amplifier and
enclosure which will alter the sound of the speaker. Also, the speaker
driver may change. So, it's premature to make judgements of its sound
quality right now. Furthermore, listening to recordings of audio
equipment leaves a lot to be desired. After all, you wouldn't be
listening to the SPX3 itself, but to what was picked up by the
microphone and recording equipment I would have available, then played
back on whatever computer, audio gear, and speakers or headphone you
have on hand. Not only that, what sounds best to you may be different
than what sounds best to someone standing next to you. It would be best
to hear the final product in person.

My endeavor is to create a product that sounds as good as possible to
most listeners within the compromises necessary to get all the features
folks most want in a very small, crowded enclosure and keep the price
reasonable for what folks will be purchasing. Then, improve it as users
provide feedback from how they choose to use it.

Thanks and 73,
Robert (AG6ZZ)
