[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2020-10-10 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It was a good week to sleep with the windows open.  Cool breeze,
some rain, and a few owls.  One night it was a single Saw Whet owl
filing away for hours.  The next night started with two owls making
generic owl noises.  Then one of them broke into the familiar Barred Owl
call.  They kept this up until I fell asleep. Luckily the loggers are
back, but this time of year they arrive especially early: around 4 AM.
This company leaves no slash behind.  And you wondered where chip board
came from.

The sun has two sunspots which pose no threats of solar flares.
Seems so ominous when that's what we desire.  Strange. The solar flux
index is a bit higher.  The sun will be a bit lower this week for the
second net.  That means after dark for folks east of the Rockies.  Here
the sun will be filtering through the canopy.  But with the weather the
way it is I'll probably not see it for the clouds.  Fire danger has
dropped another notch, which is comforting.  Hopefully, this weather
system is bringing rain to Northern California too.  They could really
use a few inches right now.

Please join us on (or near):

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at 0045z Monday (5:45 PM PDT Sunday)

   73,

[Elecraft] K3/100 For Sale / Serial# 6384 / 2RX / ATU / Synth Upgrades / USB K3IOB / X-Ref / DVR etc...

2020-10-10 Thread M. George
I'm putting my K3 (Serial# 6384) up for sale. Do not reply to the list, I
will only reply to direct emails if you convince me you are serious and
then we set up time to talk on the phone (any cc'd reply / email to a
reflector will not receive a response). I might consider shipping outside
of the US depending on the right offer etc... but would prefer shipping to
the CONUS. I can't find any cosmetic issues except for a couple of tiny,
tiny scuffs on the bottom. I will NOT 'part' this K3 out at this point, so
DO NOT ask. I have other Elecraft 8 pole filters from another K3S I might
part with based on a real discussion on the phone and a real offer you are
making. Based on my research (which I can't find an exact comparable), I'm
seeing a price that would be more than $2000 and less than $3000. So yeah,
I want to get serious offers when we have a phone call. I'm not desperate
to sell... so please don't waste your time or mine. No weird machinations
on payment either... Paypal? you pay all fees etc... or bank transfer or
cashiers check, and everything clears before I ship as one would expect.

Max NG7M / n...@arrl.net

What is included, K3/100 #6384 (includes all factory mods possible/required
for this serial number, including the K-Pod power mod, Filters are all
Elecraft labeled except for one as noted) Pictures as of the time of this

One KBPF3 General Coverage RX Module
KDVR3 Digital Voice Recorder
K3SSKT Stainless H/W Kit
Silicone tuning knob upgrade (Al'a the K3S)

Original Manual and a real printed and purchased KE7X Fred Caddy K3 & P3
Third Edition Manual

Misc: I think I can find the original parts that were upgraded if you want
them and I believe I have all the original boxes if you really want them
(sales receipts) etc...
I will ship the K3 in an Elecrdaft K3 shipping box

I'm the original owner and for the last 4-5 years this K3 has rarely been
used, stored in a pelican case... only operated for a few remote outings.
I live in Utah, which is a super dry / low humidity climate / no smoking.
The SS screw / hardware kit, which is installed will show some screws that
are not solid black, this is normal for the SS hardware kit. I usually
operate with an external amplifier so the high power amp in the K3 has
rarely been used at 100% output.

Pictures as of Oct 10th 2020, more can be provided if I determine you are
serious... internal etc..

I can’t help you with the KAT500-Remote Software because I don’t use it. If
you’re not satisfied with how KAT500-Remote is working for you, then I suggest
taking a look at the KAT500 Utility software (v.1.19.18.5). As I explained,
simply log into the ham shack computer with VNC Client, TeamViewer, etc. to
manage the KAT500 utility and you’re good to go. One advantage of this
approach is that you don’t have to install the Elecraft software on every
‘client’ computer to be able to access the KAT500 and you’re not limited to a
PC as other devices that can run VPN Client TeamViewer, etc. (iPhone, iPad,
Linux, Windows, Android, Google Chrome, etc.) can access the local computer
running KAT500. It also doesn't require port forwarding configuration to gain
access to the shack’s PC.

Another approach with the KAT500 Utility is to use a Lantronix EDS4100 (or
similar) Serial-to-Ethernet Device Server which provides a ComPort connection
between a device (such as the KAT500) and the PC where you’re located. Connect
the KAT500 RS232 port to an open port on the Device Server, install the
Lantronix ComPort software on the PC of interest, configure the EDS Device
Server with the RS232 settings needed, and now you can connect directly to the
KAT500 using the Elecraft Utility Software from wherever you are. The
Lantronix ComPort software configures the PC to accept an ethernet connection
and convert the connection to reflect a ComPort. Windows Manager sees it as a
ComPort, and you specify that ComPort in the KAT500 setup (I used Com9 set to
38400 baud). You’ll will need to setup port forwarding at the hamshack to gain
access to the Lantronix brower-based configuration setup and/or run the
Lantroix utility software to manage the Device Server. You can install the
Lantronix ComPort software on multiple PCs and they can all access a given
ComPort (one connection at a time) for the KAT500.

I've used the EDS4100 for a number of years to access my KAT500 remotely using
the Elecraft Utility running on Win10 on my MacBook Pro running Parallels to
create a Win10 Virtual Machine. I also installed it on the shack PC. I also
used the EDS4100 (which can support four physical ComPort connections) with my
KPA500 before I switched to the Remote Rig RC-1216H. Again, that change was
done so that I could access the KPA500 with a web browser.

In summary if it turns out that you’re not satisfied with your current
approach, I heartily recommend using the KAT500 Utility software to manage the
KAT500 as I’ve outlined. You'll have access to the same front panel controls
as you would sitting in front of the Tuner: Power, Tune, Memorize, Mode
(Automatic, Manual, Bypass), Antenna (1-2-3). You’ll also have “Other”
options (Caps on Ant Side, Bypassed, Attenuator, Amp Key Interrupt) and the
software shows you the "Last Observed” Frequency, VFWD, VRFL, SWR, ByPass SWR,
Band, and Tune State. It also displays the capacitance (pF) and Inductance (nH)
of the tuned ’solution’.

Barry,
Thanks for the comments and hints.  I'm using the KAT500-Remote
Version 1.0.15.0 software over the internet to a remote system in a
different town.
This is NOT the utility software, it allows for hosting a KAT500 over
the internet for control by multiple clients,  a different program.  The
client end does not have a clear indication of the power status of the
remote KAT500.

Thanks,

I can keep trying the POWER button then the TUNE button until it
works, but it would be much better for a positive indication of the
power state by button color or some other indication in the application.

I have set the "Initial Power" in the KAT500 utility to be "Power On"
when DC  is applied, but not sure this is always observed.  I have no
other way to see the remote site when this happens.

That is the key step.  With “Initial Power set to Power On” when DC is
applied, the KAT500 will indeed always be on when power is applied.
The question is what happens if power is removed and recognizing that
the KAT500 is without power.

The Elecraft Utility tests for a Com Port connection when it opens.
If the KAT500 is not on, the utility will not see the KAT500’s com
port and it will be unable to connect.  If the KAT500 is on, the
connection to the PC will established (assuming your RS232 cable is
connected to a PC).  You can see the results in one of two ways:

1.  Under the Port Tab, selecting that and you’ll see a box open
reporting the connection and the serial speed of that connection, or

2.  Under the Firmware Tab, there is an activity log that shows the
sequence of events to open the Com Port and establish a connection.

If the KAT500 does not have power, these tests will fail.  Under the
Firmware->Activity Log you’ll see entries stating (for example):

10:56:02 Attempting to contact KAT500 on port COM2 at 38400 bit/s

as it scrolls through different baud rates attempting to connect.  If
you see this, the KAT500 is not getting power.

Presumably you have a way to remotely turn on the power supply
connection to the KAT500. When power is restored you’ll see
confirmation in the activity log:

10:59:39 KAT500 version 01.75. Serial port speed 38400 bit/s

I use a West Mountain Radio R40051 which is a web-based device that
has five power ports (Anderson Power Poles) where one provides power
to the K3, a second port provides power to the KAT500, a third port
provides power to the Remote Rig, and a fourth port provides power to
the Antenna Genius 8x2.  Thus, I can shutdown/recycle these devices
remotely. I shutdown the equipment when severe storms are expected, or
it appears that there may be a glitch that a reboot might resolve.
Given that I’m currently 1,280 miles from the shack, redundancy in
the form of being able to power down/power up equipment is a nice feature.

I can also remotely shutdown and restart the power supply that powers
my Elecraft equipment  (except the KPA500 which is on 240VAC) by using
an AC-PWR module from WMR that allows the R40051 to power on/off the
power supply through a different port on the same R40051.  I use a 3A
power supply to power the R4005i (it is always on) and second 30A
power supply to power the K3-KAT500-Remote Rig-Antenna Genius.

The KPA500 is controlled separately through a Remote Rig RC-1216H that
provides a web-based screen mimicking the KPA500 front panel where I
can power on/off and set standby/operate through the interface as well
as see the LED meters,  As I use Remote Rig with the K3, the K3/0-mini
activates the K3 when the Mini is powered on.  I also use a second
RC-1216H to control my Green Heron rotor controller.

BTW, I did a copy/paste of the Activity Log remotely to provide this
information to you  as I use a PC in the shack to control the KAT500
and connect via VNC Client from my MacBook Pro.  I accessed the R4005i
directly through a web browser to be able to turn on/off the KAT500
with a MacBook Pro.  Thus, I don’t need a PC at my location to control
my station as I can use an iPhone or iPad to do it as well.  The
station is in Southeast Georgia and I’m currently in Rosllndale
(Boston), MA.

Hope this helps,

Barry, WD4ASW/1

Any suggestions?

Gordon - N1MGO

Andy,
Thanks, but I'm trying to use KAT500-Remote Version 1.0.15.0 from
the Elecraft Web site, under "Logging, Control and Remote Software for
K-Line & KX-Line". This  allows for hosting a KAT500 over the internet
for control by multiple clients.  The actual commands sent to the tuner
are hidden by the software.

Thanks,

The power on command is P  not P;

 From the programmer's reference -

"BootLoader Command Reference
The KPA500 uses single character commands when in boot mode. Boot mode is the
state the KPA500 is
in when the rear panel power switch is in the ON position, while the main
firmware is not running. This
mode is used for starting up the KPA500 or downloading fresh firmware.
Bootloader commands must be
sent upper-case only.

P Power On
The P command will cause the KPA500 to perform internal firmware checks, then
execute the main
firmware to power up the amplifier. This is the command to use to remotely
power up the KPA500. No
response is sent from the KPA500 after receiving this command."

[Elecraft] KX3 FW - N0UK tx inhibit & CW sidetone bug reproduced

2020-10-10 Thread Drew Arnett
I was able to reproduce the bug Chris, N0UK, reported with tx inhibit
and CW sidetone on the KX3.

To be thorough, the FW as just installed by Elecraft, is uC 02.90
anddsp 01.52which is the latest.

I have cabling for the ACC2 port, as I use ring contact to PTT a
transverter and also to PTT a KXPA100.

Menus have had minimal configuration post service from elecraft, just
enough to setup for transverter operation in the 10 GHz contest. Mode
is CW and VOX is on of course.

ACC2 Inhibit = Low. I used a paddle on the KXPD paddle port (key 2).
Was able to get the stuck sidetone as you describe while sending dits
or sending dahs by. (Key 2 left = dot.) For kicks, changed to Key 2
= hand. Found that if the key is released before inhibit is released,
the sidetone does not stick. The value of inhibit when the key is
initially asserted is not buggy. Saw the same behavior with menu
setting inhibit high.

inhibit low
key - inhibit - inhibit release - key release --> sidetone stuck
key - inhibit - key release - inhibit release --> sidetone OK
inhibit - key - inhibit release - key release --> sidetone stuck
inhibit - key - key release - inhibit release --> sidetone OK

inhibit high
key - inhibit - inhibit release - key release --> sidetone stuck
key - inhibit - key release - inhibit release --> sidetone OK
inhibit - key - inhibit release - key release --> sidetone stuck
inhibit - key - key release - inhibit release --> sidetone OK

The behavior is a problem is in the firmware at the inhibit released event.

A thorough bug report would also include observations of the PTT
output and actual RF output.

[Elecraft] KPA500 REMOTE POWER CONTROL

2020-10-10 Thread DAVID INGEBRIGHT
HI Gordon-- I run a KPA 500 remotely and have the same problem some times. But
there's a big green bar at the bottom of the utility that sez "power on". That
should be your first indication. But its hard to know what's going on at the
remote site. I use a 'remote rig' setup to run the radio and the COM1 port to
talk to the KPA 500 and for power on and off I use a set of contacts from a
microbit webswitch to toggle a short across pin 12 on the ACC plug on the back
of the KPA --and that's the same as pushing the power button. The webswitch is
very reliable and I use if for other stuff like switching a fan in the
transceiver box, KAT500 power and a couple of coax relays. Here's a webpage
with some of the info: http://www.valhallatreefarm.com/WB7ELY/kpa500/kpa500.htm

Re: [Elecraft] Noisy radios

2020-10-10 Thread Jim Rhodes
Years ago one of my students in my license classes came up with what he
thought was a great idea. We had been discussing the difficulty many hams
have in finding places to live that allowed antennas. He thought it would
be a great idea to start up a development just for hams, so there would be
no restrictions in the deeds against antennas. I had to tell him that the
last person I want living next door to me is another ham. Which of course
led to another discussion.

Re: [Elecraft] Group Support

2020-10-10 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Hi Mike,

In my case takes me time to do the suggested tests. Late yesterday I
could not reproduce the problem. Sorry I did not reply to the group with
the resolution. My K3 now does not seem to be switching in to AM around
5 MHz when I have the mode set to DATA. I have some tests to do if I can
reproduce the error.

Hi Mike.

No joy. Seemed to still be in AM mode with DATA displayed. So I reached
out to Elecraft Support with result of a test to run and send them the
results. But now I can not reproduce the error.

Hi Mike.

Well, it was still looking like in AM mode so I reached out to Elecraft

them. Now I can not reproduce the error.

2020-10-10 Thread Andy Durbin
"Someone on another group mentioned sending P; to the KPA500 would turn the amp
on provided to main power switch was on. Can you confirm that?"

The power on command is P  not P;
