Totally agree with you Wayne. The lounge was a great tool. I appreciate the
time you dedicated to talk with us. Thank you for all you have done to enrich
this wonderful hobby.

Yeah, the virtual conference wasn't perfect, but nothing ever is. I'm okay with
how it turned out. I learned a lot and walked away still happy I'm a ham.

[Elecraft] The Ham Expo: What it got right

2021-03-14 Thread Wayne Burdick
Clearly there were major technical glitches with the Expo. I won't rehash the
well-earned gripes.

There's a mitigating fact many of you were probably unaware of: The two most
critical technical contributors to the effort were laid low by Covid-19 over
the week leading up to it. Despite this, most of the site's functionality was
ultimately restored. Many presentations went on, and many received rave
reviews. Of course I feel for those whose presentations were not accessible or
were otherwise compromised.

Some of our material was deferred as well. Yet there was one very significant
highlight: The Lounge.

For me, Elecraft's Airmeet lounge rooms really *did* recreate much of the
ambiance of our booth/hangout space at Dayton. I had dozens of wide-ranging
conversations with experienced operators, newbies, and friends. It felt like
like a homecoming on the year after an apocalypse.

So, while the Expo didn't go smoothly -- something the organizers have already
fallen on their swords for, multiple times -- I believe it will also be
remembered for introducing many of us to the benefits of the multiple
small-video-group paradigm. No doubt this will become a fixture of virtual
hamfests. And in physical hamfests to come, it can facilitate the active
participation of those who have no choice but to remain virtually.

Merging the Airmeet platform with Vfairs was risky, but visionary. As we say
around my house when things go sideways: points for style.

I suggest we all take a deep breath and give QSO Today a chance to work out the
kinks. I'm sure that next time, with lessons learned, the experience will be
fully beta-tested.

this is the Weber-Fechner law. It is claimed to hold true for physical
perceptions, e.g a blindfolded person’s perception of an increase in a
weight he is holding is proportional to the percentage increases, not to
the absolute amount of weight added.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2021-03-14 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Signals were fair to good on both bands.  They were quiet as well.
Quiet normally means weak propagation so I received more email than
check ins.  Oh well, you never know until you try.  I almost missed both
nets because I was busy listening to bird songs.  If I played the right
ones I was taken back to canyons, prairies, mountains, marshes and
streams I had visited in my past.  The right bird song brought back the
smells, the insects, the heat, and humidity too.  My very own TARDIS.

Hello,
There is a new version of Win4K3Suite available. This release has a fix
for
cases where the KAT500 is used without the KPA500.

Win4K3Suite is a full featured control program for the K3/S, KX3 and KX2.
It has a built in Panadapter that works with LPPAN and a sound card, as
well
as the SDRPlay RSP's. It supports the KAT500, KPA500/1500 and the KXPA100
on
most of the above radios.
A unique feature is that is has 6 built in Virtual Radios, each of which
works just like an Elecraft radio. This allows sharing of a single COM
port
with up to 6 applications. It also has a built in HRDLogbook server and
the
EiBi Shortwave database.
There are many more features like full access to menu items, a cluster
display using your ClubLog credentials and many more.

Exactly right.

I have screaming-loud tinnitus at 1700hz - which is louder than
conversation, and rises and falls in pitch and volume with every
heartbeat... Fun, fun.

Changing sidetone from 800 to 400 made a HUGE difference in my ability to
copy through the chaos. I did so after reading an article 2 or 3 years ago
- perhaps those referenced, but I thought it was done by the USAF for
intercept operators in the late 60's - I may be mistaken.

ut for those who might not get the implications of what Jim said: our
perceptions depend less on absolute values than on the difference between
two values. That's why when you get "hot" with a fever, you "feel cold"
(and want heat, blankets, etc.): the outside air is now "colder" with
respect to your skin temp.

In terms of Morse, if the signal you're listening to is at 800 Hz, and the
interfering signal (or even the tone of the white noise) is at 700 Hz, the
100hz difference amounts to just 12%. However, if the desired signal is at
400 Hz, and the interfering signal at 300, that 100hz difference is now
25%. At 300/200, it's 50%. Bigger differences are easier to copy.

I did have to reprogram myself to listen at the lower frequency -
familiarity had bred contentment.

Yup, I sat close to a Linkurt Microwave transmitter for about 15 years,
(the power supply was an early switcher, and hence very loud), then next
to three Ampex VR1200's VTRs... All are horrific noisemakers.

One of the most common forms of hearing loss starts at the high
frequencies and works its way down with age, but that's far from
universal. When one or more notches develop at certain frequencies, it's
often the result of noise exposure at work.

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-14 Thread Fred Jensen
As a result of "adventures" in my 20's, the entire audio spectrum is a
"notch" with a peak around 590-600 Hz [see K9YC's last sentence].
That's where I put my sidetone/pitch.  Around 1990 or so, I built a
little plywood cube with a Mother Bell insert from a standard black
telephone in it. I filled the box with cotton balls and put it on the
side of the rig, pointing up.  Over-the-ear headphones had become
ubiquitous and the old "cans" were no longer available so the
"headphones on the desk" trick didn't work well.  It was surprising what
I could copy with the little speaker that was mush with the phones on.

Re: [Elecraft] Qso today problems

2021-03-14 Thread David Herring
To the best of my knowledge and personal observation, most all of the technical
problems have been hashed out. They were hit with a denial of service attack
over the Internet yesterday, or so I have been told. And I have heard that they
were down some technical support staff as well. All this conspired to make it a
rough start yesterday morning. But supposedly all that has been sorted out and
the platform seems to be working now.

If you’re still having problems, maybe you can get access to their help? There
should be a link somewhere in the info you received.

Also, I am told that we will have access to all this for 30 days after the
close of the event, so even if you’ve missed out now you could still see the
presentations once you get the ticket thing sorted out.

Its in the sessions area of Ham Expo. They left "Elecraft" off of the

Searching sessions with "k4" does work though.

Video Quality looks better today on the Expo site. :-)

[Elecraft] Elecraft expo lounge up and running, despite the time change

2021-03-14 Thread Wayne Burdick
Yes, despite the loss of an hour of sleep (oh, sure..."Spring ahead," someone
said), the Elecraft expo team is ready for drop-ins.

Yesterday's small-group discussions were very enjoyable. It did in fact feel
like being at Dayton or Pacificon (etc.) at times -- something we all missed
last year. I'd like to thank Eric Guth and the QSO Today team for making this
format available.

Today I'll be pulling up the K4 and KX-line 3D models again to answer your
questions about design and functionality. Or we could talk about sunspots. Or
home-brew of any sort.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-03-14 Thread Louandzip via Elecraft
A bit OT, and this is kinda like using a CW decoder, but the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology has an phone app, BirdNet. which listens and will identify birds by
their calls.  When started, it displays a waterfall display of sound, you drag
brackets to surround the call in time, submit it, and it identifies the bird.
It works amazing well in the wild on calls you might think not loud enough to
be captured. I tried submitting whistling or talking and it correctly
identified the distinctly non-avian species.

 Good Evening,

is sound files.  Deeper digging got me to
https://www.macaulaylibrary.org/guide-to-bird-sounds/ which had exactly
the sound files I wanted.  $20 for over 4000 sound files from 900
species of birds in Canada, the US, Mexico, and parts of South America.
It is interesting to notice the regional dialects of a species.  The
local Pileated Woodpecker population may not understand the call from
their Carolina cousins.  This summer I will put a few speakers out this
window and see who I can attract.  Last night the Saw Whet owls woke me
up.  Maybe I should play their tune during the daytime :)

One small sunspot is showing, while the auroral oval is stronger
than last week.  Flux is at 77 sfu.  I expect more noise with deeper
QSB.  However, you never can tell until you try.  I took a hike to check
the growth on the thinned trees.  Along the way I tightened the guy
lines to my antennas.  The winter winds had pulled them upward on the
shrubs they were holding.  When the weather turns sunny again I will
trim the central tree of dead branches.  That will let me raise the
antenna about twenty feet. Then I can test how it works when it is not
behind a wall of soil.  Luckily that is on the western side; off to the
east the way is open well into Washington.  On a clear day that is where
Mt. St. Helens would appear.

Notice the time change.  Same sun angles as last week just one hour
later on our normal clock.

FWIW At my age hearing of both ears starts to roll off in the 4khz range. I can
remember when the upper limit was 20+khz. I'm a bass player so my hearing is
quite acute at low frequencies. However for CW I prefer to copy at about 625hz.
This is with filters set in the 50-500hz range. If I try to copy at a lower
frequency the signal tends to get shrouded by noise. I have not specifically
tested the ability to discriminate close signals though.

One of the most common forms of hearing loss starts at the high frequencies and
works its way down with age, but that's far from universal. When one or more
notches develop at certain frequencies, it's often the result of noise exposure
at work.
