I have been a user of Enlightenment since the early days of E-16. In fact I expressed my appreciation to the maintainer of E-16 as well as Terminology not more than 1 or 2 weeks ago on this list. No one is as appreciative of the work that's done to Enlightenment as I am. There has been NO "hissy fit upon hissy fit" from me in this list. This is the first and only negative comment that I have ever made about enlightenment. It has turned into a longer conversation than I had expected, I will admit. I have tried to be as gentle as possible in my expressions as I could because I do understand that this is a lot of work and is given free to the users, I am no fool. But at the same time it is very possible to be appreciative and at the same time point out things that are absolutely frustrating. I admit I shouldn't have waited til frustration to point out some flaws, I could have been more subdued I admit. But now that's water under the bridge. Anyway, Have a nice day. I also have been using E for many years but I wonder why one would have to jump through so many undocumented hoops to get proper basic setup and usability for the piece of software one is trying to use. If the Ibar setup menu choices were not actually meant to act as one would presume, then why add those choices? Why not document all these hoops somewhere where they can be easily found? Don't get me wrong I love Enlightenment, always have. but the desktop seems to be nothing but a testbed for EFL. If Enlightenment desktop is meant to be used by the masses then it should perform as expected when using it's own menu and configuration system. But it doesn't. There are problems all over the desktop that need to be taken care of. The point was not whether one could get E desktop to do what one wanted, the point was that one couldn't get E desktop to perform these actions through it's own desktop menu/interface system. And many times there is just no way that one can, unless the SECRETS of how to accomplish these feats are known. > On Fri, Jun 3, 2016 at 9:58 PM, Larry Wyble <llwy...@suddenlink.net> > wrote: > > On Thu, 2 Jun 2016 23:32:05 -0700 > > Eric <eri...@cox.net> wrote: > > > >> On 06/03/2016 04:03 AM, Larry Wyble wrote: > >> > On Thu, 2 Jun 2016 22:48:18 -0700 > >> > Eric <eri...@cox.net> wrote: > >> > > >> > >> >> > >> >> Can you give an example of what steps you are taking to create > >> >> the launcher, what application you are trying to launch and > >> >> what errors you are receiving? > >> >> > >> >> Otherwise I don't know if I can provide any help. > >> >> > >> >> Kind regards, > >> >> > >> >> Eric > >> > > >> > Right click on the Ibar go up to ibar then click "create new > >> > icon > then in the "Desktop Entry Editor" I put in the name, > >> > application, then click icon and enter the icon name, them click > >> > apply and close and nothing happens. This should be working properly by using the menus and apps built into Enlightenment, not by working around the designed operation. This is supposed to be Basic usability and it's not. It's ignored for the sake of NON-usability, IOW; Wayland. Wayland is much more important than being able to use the desktop. Appreciate your replying to this. [e-users] can't make new launchers in IBAR
No matter what I do in the ibar I can't make new application launchers/icons in the ibar. I put in the name, the icon name, the executable name, hit apply and then exit and nothing happens. What do I have to do to make new app launchers on the ibar?? This shouldn't be this hard. This has been this way for multiple versions and never fixed or EXPLAINED in this mailing list. Why? What the hell does it take to get this so a regular user can set up a proper desktop the way they want it? What use is the menu items "ibar > create new icon"? I have even made my own .desktop files to try to get the launchers on the ibar but enlightenment won't pick them up out of the directory. Also I have tried for the last 3 versions to get help with my volume keys on the keyboard but so far no one has bothered to answer my questions on that. This is supposed to be the enlightenment mailing list where help is supposed to be available but so far, even with the developer being on this list, I have yet to get any help with this desktop. I just continue to upgrade with each version that comes out hoping that something changes and improves but nothing changes or improves, just the same old problems, same old bugs, same old crap. This would be a great desktop if it worked properly but it seems the only things that are important is getting Wayland working. Yeah buddy let's work on wayland and screw the rest of the desktop. Here's what we got for the last upgrade announcement: HIGHLIGHTS * Greatly improved Wayland support * New gadget infrastructure * Wizard improvements * Video backgrounds CHANGES SINCE BETA * Wayland DMA buffer support * Wayland session recovery * New DRM subsystem * Various crash fixes/additions 50% Wayland announcements, which really doesn't make a tinkers damn in the usability of the Enlightenment desktop. 50% Wayland and the rest of the upgrades don't make another tinker's damn, DRM subsystem, no help, Gadgets improvements, no help, Wizard improvements, what's that? Video backgrounds, no help. Let's fix the basic usability of the desktop. Yeah, I know, I'm an asshole. But after years and years of trying to use something that is a major fail and trying and trying to get help and seeing another fail, I'm at the point where I'm truly frustrated. Yeah, I know, it's free and so do you and since this has been distributed free for so long I come to the conclusion that you may want to know what a normal, loyal user's impression is of the desktop. I have been using Enlightenment since before E17 and I have upgraded every version since and I have always ended up going back to e16, But I'm at the point where I have to leave E16 because Terminology doesn't work properly with E16 now because of terminology looking for some crap that E16 doesn't have. I get errors and can't start it in full screen mode. Well, you can kick me off the mailing list and scream profanities at me now and tell me what an asshole I am for expressing my opinions. [e-users] E-16
Whoever is maintaining E-16, THANKS. I have been using this for about 2 years now and it is solid as a rock. I used some other window manager for years but it got to where no one took care of it any more and I finally had to move on. I tried E17, E-18, E-19 and whatever the last one is E-20 or 21, I don't know, but I always install the newest efl and Enlightenment and try it out but nothing is as solid as E-16. I guess I don't really need all the fancy stuff. :) Anyway whoever maintains E-16 Thanks again. Oh and Terminology too, it's the best. Where can I adjust the steps of the keyboard volume controls. I use the Built in XF86AudioRaiseVolume but I can't find where it calls the actual steps to increase volume. You had to take a broadaxe to the gui desktop to get them loose from the termials, Arch didn't support all my memory, me having 32 bit system, then there's that grub, another piece of software that requires a chainsaw to remove it from your drive.. [e-users] e16 question
I am planning on installing e16 on a chromebook with ubuntu installed which has 16 gigs drive space (actually about 11.5 gigs now) and since I am so limited with space I would like to know the bare essentials needed for the e16 install. I am pretty sure I need the EFL, I say pretty sure because I have always had the EFL installed on my main computers and never really had to know what e16 requirements are, if I installed e16 it just worked. :) But is there any other requirement for e16? And since there is a .deb package for efl 1.7.9 would this be good enough for e16 newest version Or should I build from source and package for .deb? Sorry this is so wordy. Lol Thanks for answering my question though. It works for me with e19 rc3 and efl 1.11.1 if its not working for you, you should raise a bug ticket. I need to raise a bug because there was a svg that wouldn't load for me the other day, be sure to include the images in the bug report. Also do you have evas generic loaders installed? I'm slowly working on a theme as well. Cheers Simon Yeah rc3 is what I installed along with all the new libs including the generic loaders. I built this yesterday after having E18.8 fail on start up complaining about svg's and jpg's. it said I didn't have them enabled in the generic loaders so I went back and made sure the loaders had everything enabled rebuilt reinstalled and rebuilt and reinstalled E118 and still got the same error. So I got E19 and built it and everything worked. Except econnman it crashes without error. But I think there is a problem with connman itself, I had to add -lncurses to the Makefile to get it to build. That shouldn't be. Well, later. The only problem I found was when setting this they lined up horizontally across the top instead of vertically down the side. Maybe I'm confused about this but that was my experience. Anyway, one more question if you don't mind. Whenever I click on the home icon on the desktop the file manager opens up but it is blank. It has a nice pretty blue background but there is nothing there. Same with the temp icon and the root. In fact anytime I open the e file manager it is blank. [e-users] Works pretty good
I downloaded the SVN today 10-09-10 at 11:00 CDT. Just so we all know what e version I'm using. :) I built packages using pkgtool in Slackware. Everything built and installed like a charm. Woohoo I built and installed in this order: eina eet evas ecore embryo edje e_dbus efreet eeze e When I ran it it came up and told me there was a module missing: conf_exe/linux-gnu-i686-ver-pre-svn-07/module.so and do I want to delete that module, and I clicked yeah since it was not actually there. woof woof.. There was no wallpapers and there were none in the configuration menu thingy, although the theme names were in there, there was not actually anything to pick and choose from.
