Potato is stable, Woody is still unstable (testing/unstable). Get potato. All you need are the bootup disks. During install, tell it to add some ftp/http sources to your apt sources list. It will look for newer files than your media (if using cdrom) and download them. After installation,

If you have the bandwidth, install the minimum potato stuff, then switch to "unstable". I'll give you my sources list if you're into it. Bob Miller wrote: Questions for all you Debianista. Which release should I install? Potato is old, and Woody is a moving target, and

What you do is use two floppies (one is a rescue/boot image, the other has the install system) and install directly from ftp...then change your sources list to a cool one and then upgrade. The original base package is about 15-20 Megs, and the upgrade should be about 50 megs... then you just ftp

I would not worry about upgrading to woody if you do not need to do so! If you are installing on a new system with cutting edge hardware then you may only be able to support new hardware to it's fullest with unstable (woody) or even more buggy "sid". However if you are setting up on an older

When installing from CD, if you have a live connection to the internet and specify an ftp/http apt source, it will download most of the files from the net, instead of from CD. If you want a faster install, don't specify the ftp sources. Later, after it's installed, you can run apt-sources (I
