Questions for all you Debianista.
Which release should I install? Potato is old, and Woody is a moving
target, and ThePostWoodyReleaseWhateverItsCalled is not soup yet,
right? What is the rev. number of Woody?
When I go to www.debian.org, I only see info on getting Potato.
I see woody in
Potato is stable, Woody is still unstable (testing/unstable).
Get potato. All you need are the bootup disks. During install, tell it to add some
ftp/http sources to your apt sources list. It will look for newer files than your

After installation,
If you have the bandwidth, install the minimum potato stuff, then switch

Testing is currently the optimum place to be, as an end user.
Servers should be 'stable' (ie
I would not worry about upgrading to woody if you do not need to do so! If
you are installing on a new system with cutting edge hardware then you may
only be able to support new hardware to it's fullest with unstable (woody)
or even more buggy "sid". However if you are setting up on an older

Hey, man! I thought you'd died.
Anyway, sometime tonight I'll have a set of potato CDs. I have a
spare box and a spare disk to try stuff out on. But when I put it on
a real box, uptime will become very important to me.
Thanks for all
When installing from CD, if you have a live connection to the internet and
specify an ftp/http apt source, it will download most of the files from the
net, instead of from CD.
If you want a faster install, don't specify the ftp sources.
Later, after it's installed, you can run apt-sources (I

I just installed FreeBSD on my laptop.
Now, I'd really like some help with some things I have grown used to in linux:

I don't know all the answers but I'll answer the ones I know.

You did mention Debian. That will raise Mike and Seth. You noticed both of
them posted.I had a real good site about Debian which I didn't benchmark.
Darn I did print it and will have to find it and I will post that address
when I find it. Well I did find one I did which explains
