% IMO, the resolve is to replace the board with a redesigned one that has a redundant/mirrored eMMC chip that would take over when the primary fails, then wirelessly alerts Tesla. In my 25yr hp-ce career, I replaced many a hot-swappable mirrored/paired drive in customer's servers (ez-peazy). % https://www.thedrive.com/news/27945/a-single-component-can-brick-older-teslas-and-tesla-wont-fix-it A Single Component Can Brick Older Teslas and Tesla Won't Fix It May 10, 2019 Jonathon Klein Though Teslas—and electric vehicles as a whole—were heralded for their easily maintained and remarkably simple drivetrain design, reality and maintenance issues have become a real problem for Tesla. While there have been a few outlying cases were major componentry goes catastrophically wrong, most of its issues have been confined to cosmetic or easily fixed problems. That isn’t the case with Tesla’s eMMC chip, which according to a number of complaints that allege when the chip fails out of warranty, owners lose access to the vehicle’s media control unit and bricks the car. The issue first surfaced via a report by Roadshow [ https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-richrebuilds-unsupported-model-s-x-3/ ] after a YouTube video detailing the issue was uploaded. According to the video, when the eMMC fails, those Tesla customers outside of warranty service are out of luck. Tesla doesn’t stock the part, nor will it service it. As we’ve covered in the past, working on your own Tesla is also a monumental undertaking that the company doesn’t explicitly condone. On the specific issue, the eMMC chip in older Teslas is based within the car’s media control unit and used to log data collected by the media system. Evidently, as the solid-state chip has only a finite amount of times its space can be rewritten, when that space is gone, the chip fails which is where the real problem starts. The chip itself doesn’t control any of the car’s actual driving functions. But the eMMC is so well-integrated into the rest of the car’s controls that when it fails, you lose access to Tesla’s media suite, much of its systems like climate control, and in some cases, the car could charge incorrectly and fail to be driveable outside of its safety mode with less than advertised oomph. According to the video, the chip can fail after a few years of use, which isn’t great for customers, nor the environment. As previously stated, Tesla doesn’t condone customers working on their own cars, however, a group of mechanically minded owners has assembled a rather extensive “Service Manual” [ http://teslaservicemanual.com/2019/01/18/replacing-emmc-in-mcu.html ] for the cars and it covers this problem. The service manual created takes users on a step-by-step guide to replacing and fixing the broken system. However, it does feature a disclaimer—like every Do-It-Yourself guide—that tinkering with it could have potentially unforeseen consequences and could result in injury or breaking the car further. Along with that silver lining, the original YouTube uploader who goes by the name “Ingineerix,” [ https://www.youtube.com/user/Ingineerix/ ] is able to take those faulty eMMC chips from plagued customers and replace them for customers outside of warranty and Elon’s gaze. That said, with Musk’s recent statements of how good his automobiles are for the environment, and how the company was founded to help mitigate climate change, the idea of a single chip rendering a relatively new car nigh unusable doesn’t exactly mesh with one another. Tesla has taken recent strides in letting customers repair their cars themselves in recent months. However, until the company starts stocking parts like the eMMC chip, as well as release detailed service manuals to the public, Tesla is going to be looking at a number of newish cars dead in a junkyard real soon. No. If you have a DPDT switch, Put +12v on both the center contacts. On one end, attach JUST the low beam light to ONE contact. [EVDL] EVLN: Tesla-3's clever mystery-box drivetrain> (Munro ate crow)
https://www.teslarati.com/teslas-model-3-electric-motor-is-a-clever-mystery-box-says-auto-experts/ Tesla’s Model 3 electric motor is a clever mystery box, says auto experts May 8, 2019 Dacia J. Ferris [images https://www.teslarati.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/model-3-drivetrain-1.jpg Model 3 drivetrain https://www.teslarati.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Sandy-Munro-Tesla-Model-3.jpg Sandy Munro holds up the Automatic Drive Module of the Tesla Model 3 Credit: Autoline Network/YouTube ] Sandy Munro, a teardown specialist and auto industry veteran, is releasing the results of a study he conducted with battery expert Mark Ellis comparing the motors inside four electric vehicles, one of which was a Tesla Model 3. Despite analyzing the vehicle for a long time, the auto expert states that there are still mysteries that he is yet to uncover on the electric sedan. “The Tesla has a lot of stuff hidden. The Tesla is a big mystery. It’s not obvious sometimes what clever things they’ve done, ” he commented about the California-based car maker’s motor in a recent interview summarized by Industry Week. “There’s mysteries every day. We thought we were clever, but we’re not that clever.” One of the clever features Munro and Ellis discovered in their Model 3 teardown was the disconnect device for the high voltage. “It’s not really a fuse…It’s like a little explosion. If the car rolls over, they have a little disconnect that blows up, (cutting) all the power to everything and that way you don’t have an electric nightmare,” he revealed. Also, the inner magnets of the Model 3 motor were found to be under a lot of stress, which is not something other manufacturers have learned to do in high volume production. “We’ve talked to lots of magnet manufacturers, but this might be another one of these made-in-Tesla kind of deals. They make a lot of stuff in-house,” Munro guessed. Another innovation that impressed the teardown team was how advanced the inverter/convertor device was that provides power to the motor, particularly in the use of silicon carbide on the devices’ integrated circuits. “It creates a lot less heat and is a lot faster than the Chevy and BMW,” Ellis added to the discussion. “Silicon carbide is the latest and greatest and Tesla so far is the only vehicle out there with it.” Munro and Ellis further noted the high level of tech Tesla’s motor contained, all while being considerably smaller than the competition. The study will be released in a few weeks and also includes detailed information about the motors inside the Chevy Bolt, BMW i3, and Jaguar I-Pace. Munro had very positive things to say about Tesla’s technology, but the electric vehicles produced by industry giants did not receive quite the same accolades. “It looks like the other guys just went around and glued together whatever they could find off the shelf,” Munro jabbed at Tesla’s competition. The BMW i3 was hit particularly hard and cited as the heaviest, most expensive, and very inefficient overall. “It’s not designed for… I don’t know what it’s designed for, really,” Munro swiped in the interview. “While everything on Tesla is…very, very efficient engineering.” Munro still isn’t sold on the Model 3 body, though, and takes issue with the complexity of the process it takes to manufacture it thanks to the number of parts, materials, and fastenings involved. Munro has a history of strong opinions on Tesla’s car intended for the mass market. After completing an initial teardown of a 2017 version of the vehicle, he infamously commented that the car’s panel gaps could be seen “from Mars” among other very critical remarks about the way the car was manufactured. Tesla eventually issued a statement in response to the criticisms, indicating that significant improvements had been made to its Model 3 manufacturing process which would render moot many of the issues identified. Once the Model 3 teardown was complete, Munro later admitted to eating “a lot of crow” in response to the technology installed and implemented throughout the car. He praised the Model 3 battery pack and the way it handles on the road, in particular, and also estimated Tesla was turning a 30% profit on the vehicle. Munro ultimately concluded that everything from the car’s suspension and down was perfect, but everything about its bodywork was questionable. While the study Sandy Munro and Mark Ellis have conducted has not yet been released, from the sounds of it, crow seems to have still been on the menu for Tesla’s inner workings while old criticisms still stand about its outer packaging. The Spanish automaker Hispano-Suiza (Spanish-Swiss), founded in 1904 by financier Damia?n Mateu and engineer Marc Birkigt, once rivaled Rolls-Royce as manufacturer of the world’s most advanced and opulent automobiles, but, by the end of the 1930s, it was out of the running. Fast-forward more than 80 years to the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show—the venue for the debut of the Carmen, a 1,005 hp electric coupe from the now hyphenless Hispano Suiza, designed in the tradition of Hispanos from the past. Like its forebears, the Carmen is not just remarkably powerful, impeccably crafted and exceedingly rare, it is also beautiful and stylistically daring. Noteworthy are the tapering backlight, fulsome rear fenders and dramatically scalloped tail recalling one Art Deco-era Hispano-Suiza that inspired its design. More than merely appropriating the once-famous name, reborn Hispano Suiza is headed by Miguel Suque? Mateu, the great-grandson of the original company’s cofounder. “Launching the Carmen realizes a lifetime’s ambition for me and my family,” says Mateu. “From the early 1900s to the 1940s, Hispano-Suiza cars were famed for their exquisite luxury and meticulous attention to technical and engineering details. We created the Carmen ‘hyperlux grand tourer’ using this same DNA.” Designed and built in Barcelona, the two-seat hypercar combines a fully electric power train using two 375 kW motors, one at each rear wheel and was developed with QEV Technologies, a company with extensive experience in FIA Formula E series competition. The Carmen’s carbon-fiber monocoque is wrapped in the same material as the body, which features scissor doors and a drag coefficient lower than the benchmark Porsche 918 Spyder. And while carbon fiber underlies the architecture of the interior, the surface employs plush leather, turned aluminum and rich wood, as did all the past Hispanos. “The Carmen’s highly emotive and striking design is strongly influenced by the distinctive styling of the 1938 Hispano-Suiza Dubonnet Xenia,” says the brand’s design director Francesc Arenas, referencing one of the original marque’s most famous examples. The Xenia was constructed by French coachbuilder Jacques Saoutchik and penned by Jean Andreau, who designed aircraft as well as automobiles. Accordingly, the car resembles an aircraft fuselage and features the first-ever curved-glass windshield, which combines with the curved side windows to evoke a cockpit canopy. The sleek, torpedo-shaped body has sliding doors and a removable metal roof. The car was commissioned by Andre? Dubonnet (son of the founder of the eponymous aperitif company), who named it in honor of his deceased wife. In that same tradition, the new Hispano Suiza is named for—and inspired by—the unique style and elegance of Suque? Mateu’s mother, Carmen. The company plans to produce 19 examples between late 2019 and 2021, each with a projected price of approximately $1.7 million. Peder Hulthin, a Tesla Model S 70D owner from Norway, told Electrek (after first sharing the story on the Teslanytt facebook group) that he was driving his electric car on Autopilot on the highway between Oslo and Drammen when a car swerved in and out of his lane. As the vehicle exited his lane, there was red van stuck in the middle of the highway and neither Hulthin or Autopilot could react in time to avoid the crash. The Model S hit the vehicle head-on at about 85 to 90 km/h, according to the driver. Hulthin shared pictures of the aftermath with Electrek — showing just how strong of an impact the Model S had to absorb: Despite the severity of the crash, Hulthin says that he was able to walk away from the accident with only bruises related to the airbags. He told Electrek: “The car has without a doubt saved my life and Tesla’s engineering has done its job.” The Model S is known to be amongst the safest cars in the world based on its safety ratings, but it is especially performing well when it comes to front-end collisions due to its large crumple zone. Electrek’s Take The lack of engine at the front serves to absorb the energy in the instance of a crash instead of pushing on the cabin. We have seen many previous examples of severe crashes involving Tesla vehicles where the crumple zone was completely destroyed, but the driver and passengers survived. It’s an interesting example of how electric vehicles can be more easily designed for safety. As for the Autopilot component in the crash, we have now seen many examples of Autopilot not recognizing a stopped vehicle on the highway, especially after a lead vehicle exits the lane. In this instance, maybe there wasn’t time to react either way, but it looks like the emergency braking system didn’t engage. It’s something that Tesla really needs to work on. Leave that contact open and wire the other 3 outside contacts to +12v if the lights return is ground. Good luck, Cor. [EVDL] Koch(bough) (profit$-over-pollution)coalition attacks> Kill-EV-Credits
https://www.desmogblog.com/2019/05/09/koch-funded-groups-still-begging-congress-kill-electric-car-tax-credit Koch-Funded Groups Still Begging Congress to Kill the Electric Car Tax Credit May 9, 2019 Ben Jervey [image https://www.desmogblog.com/sites/beta.desmogblog.com/files/styles/full_width_blog_image/public/blogimages/ev-tax-credit_0.jpg?itok=794KAkXB Electric car with tax credit form ] A coalition of free market advocacy groups, led by former Koch Industries lobbyist, urged Congress on Thursday not to extend the electric vehicle (EV) tax credit. In a letter rife with easily discredited and false statements, this coalition sent its plea to the leaders of the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee. Most of the 34 groups are funded by the petrochemical billionaire Koch brothers’ donor network or have ties to Koch Industries. And most of the references cited in the letter have clear, demonstrable ties to Koch Industries and Koch funding. The episode echoes a similar sequence from last September, when many of the same groups sent a comparable letter after Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and others introduced the Electric Cars Act of 2018. The letter is further evidence of this network of Koch-affiliated groups ramping up their opposition to the EV tax credit. “The American Energy Alliance (AEA) has organized a coalition to proclaim in one unified voice that there should be no expansion of the misguided electric vehicle tax credit,” Tom Pyle, president of the AEA and a former lobbyist for Koch Industries, wrote in a statement, first published by The Daily Caller News Foundation, which has received more than $2.6 million from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation since 2013. (That article, it’s worth mentioning, was published at 5:10 am EDT on Thursday, before the letter could have been delivered. Evidently, the Koch-funded think tanks gave the Koch-funded website an advance copy.) Which Koch-Tied Groups Signed the Anti-EV Letter? The letter fails to disclose that most of the signatory groups depend on funding from the oil and gas industries, or specifically from the Koch brothers’ petrochemical refining businesses — industries that electric cars threaten the most. DeSmog laid out the Koch connections to many of these signatories last September. Some notable additions to this coalition are failed Federal Reserve Board nominee Stephen Moore and Wayne Winegarden, the author of a Pacific Research Institute study that is often cited in attacks on electric cars. Here’s the full list of signatories: Tom Pyle, American Energy Alliance Bethany Marcum, Alaska Policy Forum Lisa Nelson, ALEC Action Phil Kerpen, American Commitment Rick Manning, Americans for Limited Government David T. Stevenson, Caesar Rodney Institute Andrew F. Quinlan, Center for Freedom and Prosperity Jeffrey Mazzella, Center for Individual Freedom Isaac Orr, Center of the American Experiment Mark Mathis, Clear Energy Alliance David McIntosh, Club for Growth Caleb Rossiter, CO2 Coalition Stephen Moore, Committee to Unleash Prosperity Myron Ebell, Competitive Enterprise Institute Matthew Kandrach, Consumer Action for a Strong Economy Craig Richardson, E Legal Mandy Gunasekara, Energy 45 Fund Annette Meeks, Freedom Foundation of Minnesota Jason Pye, FreedomWorks George Landrith, Frontiers of Freedom Tim Heulskamp, The Heartland Institute Tim Chapman, Heritage Action for America Amy Oliver Cooke, Independence Institute Brett Healy, The John K. To support this claim, they cite four studies or reports and one poll. Three of those studies were funded by Koch money, and the poll was paid for by the American Energy Alliance, and conducted by a Koch lobbyist. One by one: Citation: American Energy Alliance, ”New Survey: Voters (Still) Find Vehicle Subsidies 'Unfair'” Quote: “Subsidies for electric vehicles are unpopular.” Reality: This classic push poll was commissioned by the Koch-funded American Energy Alliance and conducted by MWR Strategies, a lobbying firm with clients including Koch Industries and the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers. What jumper? Each side of a DPDT switch is independent. So, one side of the switch will be ON-OFF-ON for the low beam. The other side will be OFF-OFF-ON for the hi beam. Re: [EVDL] switch DPDT wringing for hi/lo lights
I am not sure what you are trying to do and I don't want to figure it out, but I will say you can definitely jumper the terminals and something will happen. I used to design switches for Eaton Corp and it was common to ship some configurations with this kind of mod. For example a DPDT can be used to reverse a DC motor by switching the output polarity. This probably Google-able. I would advocate that you carefully diagram the circuit on paper. It is easy to get this sort of thing wrong. This is just one in a host of unfounded and sometimes bizarre reasons preventing motorists from considering the move to a fully electric vehicle, a new study from LV= General Insurance discovered. Whilst zero-emissions cars are becoming increasingly popular with 27 per cent of drivers considering switching to an electric vehicle within the next five years, both for cost benefits and for environmental reasons, many motorists are still hesitant about making the move due to misinformation. A substantial 18 per cent said they'll never consider buying one due to a number of concerns. This includes 51 per cent of people who worry the battery charge will run out, 48 per cent who said it is too expensive and 45 per cent believing they can't be used for long distance journeys. A huge 55 per cent also said they believe an electric car is not as powerful as a petrol or diesel vehicle. HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP Keep your car on the road for less with online MOT and tax reminders and help finding servicing LV= carried out research of more than 2,004 UK adults carried out between 26 February to 1 March 2019. To ensure motorists have all the facts, the insurer has dispelled the 10 biggest electric car myths. 1. Electric cars aren't as powerful Interestingly, 55 per cent of UK adults believe an electric car isn't as powerful as petrol or diesel, however this isn't true. An electric car can generate power quicker and most accelerate quicker than a petrol or diesel equivalent. The fastest road car in the world has been revealed as an electric car, the Pininfarina Battista, which was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. 2. You can't drive an electric car on a motorway A huge 12 per cent of people are convinced that you can't drive an electric car on the motorway, but that is false. Ecotricity has 145 public stations at motorway and A-road services around the UK, providing around 300 individual chargers. LV= has also partnered with Zap-Map, an interactive map of the 20,000 public charging points across the UK, to help drivers easily locate one closest to them. 3. You can't wash an electric car in a car wash A further 18 per cent of people are convinced you can't wash an electric model in a car wash. Although electricity and water tend not to mix, it's completely safe to do so. Before electric cars are sold, they're heavily tested which includes a soak test. Therefore, it's just as safe to take an electric car through a car wash as it is a normal car. 4. Electric cars shouldn't be used during heavy rain Although 12 per cent think electric cars cannot be driven in the rain, this is a myth. Electric cars have all been extensively tested by their manufacturers to ensure top performance in a range of conditions. Electric car chargers are weatherproof, and all charge points have been through rigorous safety testing and are installed in accordance with the relevant regulations. 5. Electric car battery's need to be replaced every five years A common misconception is that electric car battery's need to be replaced every five years, with 23 per cent of people believing this is true. However, the current prediction is the battery will last at least 10 years and perhaps even up to 20 years before
