So the majority of people don't have your knowledge of how the NEC code etc works... I don't believe that a hybrid is any more susceptible that an ICE or an EV however. It makes a big difference what kind of batteries are used. Most hybrids use nimh batteries, which are basically non-combustible. And of course, most cars use lead-acid batteries, which are even less combustible. Any battery can provide the energy to start a fire in something else. For instance, a short circuit can overheat a wire, or start an arc. The likelihood of this kind of fire is related to how safely the vehicle is built. It would be interesting to find some actual statistics on the number of fires per million miles for various types of vehicles (gasoline, diesel, hybrid, EV). -- I look for what needs to be done. Its GFI circuit just sees current that isn't balanced across the mains. It can't tell the difference between current going through your body to ground, and current going through a 120v charger to ground. So it's gong to say "nope" just to be safe. Also, using the ground connection as a neutral return in wiring is an NEC violation for a reason. If there should be a fault in the building's ground connection, using the ground that way puts line voltage on the enclosure of every other grounded appliance! The same thing can happen if it's done in connected equipment. Re: [EVDL] Fires in hybrid vehicles.
Lawrence, Plenty gasoline cars burn out every single day, without the help of a Hybrid pack and you hardly ever hear a big deal about that, I have no data that says that the many millions of Hybrid vehicles have a different rate of ignition. The case is different for self-built/converted cars as I have heard of quite a number of them with problems, but factory built and converted cars have received extra ordinary attention to the safety of the high voltage circuits, with leakage detection and deliberate routing of the conductors in shielded places to avoid problems. Tesla has gone to great length to fuse every single cell in their packs, so that a single cell failing will not cause a problem for the pack, because of the risk of a single cell in a parallel configuration shorting and receiving the energy from all adjacent cells - but the fuse stops this short. There have been occasional fires in Teslas, typically after an extremely high impact, with enough force to compromise the structure of the battery and resulting in many ignition points, probably burning the BMS wires as those are relatively high resistance so those could burn as result of a short without blowing the fuse on each cell. I do not know if the BMS wires are fused on Tesla. I have seen the results of shorted BMS wires on Leaf packs, as those wires are simply bolted to the module terminals. Yet there has never been a burned out Leaf from its own battery (I have worked on a Leaf that burned due to someone adding an extra battery pack in the trunk of the vehicle). The Hybrid battery in the early Hybrids (mostly Prius) have now started to fail en masse as those are 15-17 years old and they look ugly from corrosion, but I hear no probems with the battery, other than just cells failing and BMS wires being corroded to the point of breaking, so the car simply stops and needs work, but I have not heard of many problems with Hybrid vehicle fires, so I am not sure where your idea came from. -Original Message- From: EV [mailto:ev-boun...@lists.evdl.org] On Behalf Of Lawrence Rhodes via EV Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2018 8:20 AM To: ev@lists.evdl.org; ev-requ...@lists.evdl.org; ev@lists.evdl.org Cc: Lawrence Rhodes Subject: [EVDL] Fires in hybrid vehicles. Re: [EVDL] Adding J1772 Plug to a conversion
Yeah, I have not seen the new 2018 Leaf in person yet. I have a bunch of used Leafs available in this area, including one dealer that does almost exclusively used Leafs http://www.plattautoor.com/vehicles. Unfortunately for me, I think they are super ugly. I don't feel the same about the newer models... at least not from the pictures I've seen.
