To answer the question about how Texas power companies can charge so much
legally: Texas operates its own power grid so it can be exempt from federal
regulation. State regulation is minimal, in line with the "every man for
himself" attitude common there.

Does anyone know of someone parting out a 2013-2015 Smart ED, selling a wrecked

Check out plugshare.com, or the plugshare mobile app for locations of chargers.
If you buy a LEAF with the DC fast charge connector, and if there is a fast
charge station on the way, you won't have to charge long.
There is a Seattle area LEAF owner's group on Facebook that is very helpful.
I'm sure people there will be familiar with the route you need to take.

Re: [EVDL] Smart ED charging issue

2019-05-27 Thread Bill Collins via EV
Part of the problem with the Smart ED is that most of the service information
is contained in the Mercedes STAR scan tool and not available as a shop manual.
I will see if I can locate a reset.

Parts for these are very rare in salvage yards. A semi-local used car dealer
has one that won't charge that they have been trying to sell for nine months
for $3000. I'm considering trying to talk them down significantly on the price
and buying it for parts (or using my car to fix it), but first I need to verify
that its charging fault is in the BMS as claimed and that mine is in the
charger (or at least something other than the BMS).

[EVDL] Smart ED charging issue

2019-05-26 Thread Bill Collins via EV
Does anyone here have any experience diagnosing the Smart ED? Here's what's
going on with mine:

My 2013 Smart ED is no longer charging. When I plug it in to the EVSE, I hear
the usual clicking of contactors in the car, the EVSE contactor closes and then
opens again within a half second, and the dashboard flashes "Malfunction". This
repeats as long as I have the EVSE connected. (Yes, I have tried three EVSEs,
all of which used to work with the car)
I have tried to scan for error codes with an iCarsoft MBII and a Delphi DS150,
but neither will scan the EV specific systems.

Any suggestions for a scan tool, or do I have to take it to a shop with a STAR
tool? Anything I could check without a scan?

I have verified that there is no damage to the wires connecting the charge
inlet to the charger module in the car.

I took a quick look at that before buying a few BB660 cells to experiment with

dropping off in the battery recycle bin at Lowes home centers. It's not a
practical way to dispose of a large number, but for a few dead cells, I would
just drop one off from time to time.

I'm interested in hearing the details on larger scale recycling too.

provided backup power in case the primary electrical systems failed. If the
battery was used in flight, they would take it out of the aircraft and recharge

As I recall, the cells were rated for 10 charge/discharge cycles and a calendar

Re: [EVDL] Smart ED questions

2017-10-24 Thread Bill Collins via EV
It was towed to the dealer because of a fault in the motor control electronics.
They replaced a module under warranty, but didn't give many details. When it
threw the fault code, it would not move under its own power (I coasted into a
parking lot). By the time AAA arrived, saw that they needed a rollback truck,
and returned with the right truck, it would drive again, but I didn't trust it
to make it to the dealer.
A friend had somewhat similar symptoms with his and had the accelerator pedal
sensor replaced under warranty.

The car was running when I bought it. $4500 is a pretty typical price for a
2013 in the Raleigh, NC area.

I recently bought a 2013 Smart ED for $4500. I own the battery.
I took it to the Mercedes dealer (Leith, in Cary, NC) and they kept it for two
weeks. The only loan car they could give us (after we asked, they did not offer
it) was an ICE Smart, which is a horrible car to drive.

The car itself has been fun. It's not as refined as the LEAF, but drives like a
fast little go-cart! It feels like a really well done EV conversion, while the
LEAF feels like it was designed to be electric.
The lack of a service manual bothers me, but there seems to be a growing body
of DIY info, including a leafspy like device that's in the prototype stage and
a $200 code reader that's claimed to work with the Smart electric. We also have
an independent mechanic that is working with one of the local Smart EV owners
to learn how to repair them.

Older RVs do not have 240 volt appliances. Newer/larger ones use the 240 volt
14-50 connection to power air conditioning, etc. If forced to plug in to a
TT-30 with an adapter they lose a lot of functionality.

[EVDL] Using the LEAF drivetrain in a conversion

2017-01-05 Thread Bill Collins via EV
Has anyone been able to talk to the LEAF inverter directly? I know it's
possible to run the LEAF drivetrain outside the car if you take enough of the
car with it, but It would be a lot easier if you could just send CAN commands
directly to the inverter.

Re: [EVDL] Forklift Battery Options?

2017-01-05 Thread Bill Collins via EV
If you go with replacement batteries that are significantly lighter than the
original, keep in mind that the batteries are part of the balance equation that
determines how much weight can be safely lifted and how high it can be lifted.
You either need to add ballast to increase the weight or be careful not to use
the forklift near it's limits.

A friend has a small walk behind forklift that originally used two 12v deep
cycle batteries about the size of a golf cart battery. Right now, it's running
on a pair of gel cell batteries from a mobility scooter. We're careful not to
lift too much weight with it.

Re: [EVDL] Ford Focus EV battery for conversion?

2016-12-16 Thread Bill Collins via EV
I really dislike the idea of high voltage BMS wires running all over the place.
My plan, if I use LEAF cells, is to make a PCB that attaches directly to the
battery terminals that has a microcontroller reading the cell voltages and
sending the data via an optically isolated serial bus that is daisy chained from
one cell to the next.

[EVDL] Ford Focus EV battery for conversion?

2016-12-14 Thread Bill Collins via EV
I've been planning on using one or more LEAF batteries in my conversion project.
In searching salvage yard listings (car-part.com), I'm seeing a lot of Ford
Focus EV batteries for similar prices to the LEAF, but they are generally newer
batteries.

Has anyone here used cells from a Focus? The built-in water cooling heat
exchangers seem like a good feature, and the fact that they are water cooled may
mean that the salvaged batteries may be in better shape than the LEAF ones.
(I've decided that if I go with a LEAF battery, it will either be very new or
come from a northern salvage yard)

The PCM probably had a resistor to a regulated voltage source, so that the tank
sender produced a varying voltage instead of just a resistance.

Most Jettas are front wheel drive. Do you already have one of the all wheel
drive ones? If not, you're looking for a rare car to convert.

Re: [EVDL] Current limiting

2016-06-07 Thread Bill Collins via EV
That would be an extremely short lived event. Once current starts to flow, delta
voltage will decrease rapidly.

Re: [EVDL] Current limiting

2016-06-07 Thread Bill Collins via EV
The resting voltage of a lead acid battery is significantly lower than the
voltage required to charge it. For example: a fully charged 12 volt battery has
a resting voltage of 12.6, but will not draw much current unless you apply 13.5
volts or so. This means that when you connect two batteries with different
states of charge, less current flows than many people think.
