How to Restore explicit folder data from the Exchange backup

2003-01-31 Thread Sanjeev Sharma
One of our users mistakenly deleted his past Friday's calendar information
through his PDA. We do have a backup of our Exchange server data for this
past weekend. My question is there any utility in exchange which will let
me restore only his calendar information from the backup? Any assistance
would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

RE: E2K Logging question

2003-01-31 Thread Jeffrey Dubyn
Michael -

Thank you very much for the assistance today. I finally found the
problem:

I was looking in the SMTP logs in %windir%\system32\logfiles, not in
correct place of
C:\Program Files\Exchsrv\server.log directory.

Once looking in the correct log, I found the outgoing email.

This of course led to another issue in that the email was going to a
Contact, but it didn't go to the Primary SMTP address of that contact,
it went to a secondary address listed in the Addresses tab of the
Contacts properties. The contact had two SMTP addresses set up. The
email was sent to the one that was NOT set as the primary address (and
was NOT listed as the address in the general page of the Contacts
properties).

When I tried to delete the non-primary address, I received an error
message "This is the home e-mail address of the recipient. It cannot be
removed."

I worked around this by deleting the entire contact, then creating two
contacts, one each with the SMTP address.

Anyone with idea why this happened?

Thanks!

Gurus, I am experiencing a weird problem with our Sysadmin Account. I was
trying to send e-mail from an external address and it was giving an NDR that
did not help. I have deleted this account and tried to recreate it but it
will not give me the original SMTP address. When I try creating the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] SMTP it claims it already exists.

I have followed the KB280765 telling me to go through system manager,

Any ideas why I can not create the address seeing as Exchange doesn't agree

Hi All,

We receive a low volume of faxes and send even less. I am interested in
finding a simple and inexpensive way to forward faxes to an email address on
my Exchange 5.5 server. We are not interested in allowing folk to fax from

If anyone has ever seen such a device or you have any other suggestions,

Hi.

I don't know if this is by design or if it's a misconfiguration on my
server. We host 3 domains on our Exchange 2000 server (SP3). Only
users on 1 of these domains are able to use OWA. All users are able to
log through Outlook 2000, this situation occurs only with OWA.

Example:

DomainA
DomainB
DomainC

All users using an e-mail address of this form as primary e-mail
address: users@DomainA are able to log on OWA. Other users can't log
(system request for password 3 times then show an "Access is denied"
error message).

Is there a way all my users can log to OWA?

Thanks for your help.

Any Exchange-connected fax product can receive faxes and forward them to a
designated Exchange mailbox. I don't know if WinFax Pro has this ability or
not.

We use Faxination (www.faxination.com). GFI's Faxmaker would work also and
is probably less expensive. With each you also have the ability to send
faxes from client machines. That may not be one of your requirements but it
is an significant productivity booster. I have Visioneer Strobe scanners on
each desktop and being able to scan and send saves a lot of time for the
users. All sending and receiving is handled through Outlook.

resource kit. I ran the Custom Installation Wizard to create an MST file
to specify options for Outlook. I then create a GPO that assigns the msi
file for Office modified with the MST. What I want to have happen is
that Outlook opens, the setup wizard doesn't start, and the Exchange
mode is chosen, along with the server I specify, and with the correct
mailbox.

In the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW), part 14 (for Outlook), what
should be the options I choose? In the Exchange Settings section, I
enter the name of the server, but that doesn't seem to effect anything.
At the moment, the Outlook Setup Wizard runs the first time Outlook is
started, if I choose to use MS Exchange Server, the correct mailbox is
filled in, but the server textbox is empty. Can I use the CIW to avoid
the setup wizard?

Thanks,
Erick

Re: Office 2000 MST and Outlook/Exchange setup

2003-01-31 Thread Erick Thompson
Not at all, it's hard enough just finding the CIW.

Let me rephrase the question, how I can get Outlook to not use the setup
wizard when it starts, and instead just start with the correct settings? I
had assumed creating an MST would be the answer, but I can't seem to get it
to work.

As a background, I am trying to get my network set up so that when a system
is reimaged via RIS, the user can just log in and start using it, no
configuration needed.

Thanks,
Erick

Absolutely nothing is wrong.

Sendmail (and a few other *nix mta's) offer the ability to completely
destroy the integrity of the message headers.

Not to mention, the from address isn't only stored in the header, its
stored
in the message body most of the time too.

RE: Arcserve 2000 and MSX 5.5

2003-01-31 Thread Scoles, Damian

I totally agree with Ed. Exclude these from your backup routines.
For DR of our Exchange box, I just make sure that I use the Exchange
agent from Arcserve to backup Exchange part of the box (in Arcserve).
Then I make a duplicate server (down to the name, SP, and all) and
restore just the Exchange data via the agent. Worked flawlessly three
different times in 2 years (scheduled testing every 6 months).

I guess my concern is that I haven't had to do a full recovery of a
server with Arcserve and am not 100% sure the exchange agent saves all
the transaction logs before purging them. I am afraid if a drive fails
I will not have all the logs necessary to get back to current.

Does everyone else simply exclude the entire DSADATA and MDBDATA folders
from their backups?

Same with ours. A single lost fax could cost us thousands of dollars.

Im with Martin It basically depends on what you do.
Ive got 2 DID trunks(120 numbers), 16 analog lines into the fax server
stand alone fax machines well over 25

2 fax machines for 100 people..wow it would seem like too few to me.
then do yourself the favor buy the best unit you can casue when one fails
your capacity is down 50%

in uor business that would cost us huge..

But note these are industrial/business machines and are not cheap. say like
850 and up..but they never die... you get what you pay for...

You better research this a bit more.
Cause you not getting away with anything cheap if you want it reliable.
First you will need a fax card (forget the modem thing , it does not work
reliably..I wont get into the tech about it all) but a Brooktrout analog 2
channel cheapest is like 500.00

then from there If your really good with code you could wrtie something
up..you could do the open soft of the fax software that run's on unix (i
forget the name, check a linux mag art's about 6 month ago).

Reliability cost money, for my 100 some odd users it paid off all 20K of
it(that's lot of hardware and all faxiantion softlic..etc...)

Reliability cost money, for my 100 some odd users it paid off all 20K of
it(that's lot of hardware and all faxiantion softlic..etc...)

I've got about 100 users. We need to replace our incoming fax machine. I'll
have a hard time justify much more than the cost of a new fax.

$1000 would be my limit.

Hi All,

We receive a low volume of faxes and send even less. I am interested in
finding a simple and inexpensive way to forward faxes to an email address on
my Exchange 5.5 server. We are not interested in allowing folk to fax from
their PC. Ideally, I would like to find an appliance that could do this for
us... Receive a fax and forward it to a single email address.

If anyone has ever seen such a device or you have any other suggestions,
please let me know.

TIA,

Aaron

Thanks Bill. Good info. Looks like we'll stick with a traditional fax.
I'm going to check out Panafax.

then do yourself a favor get a good Panafax.

Checked into that one... Unfortunately it either forwards as a property
format and a viewer needs to be installed, or it forwards as a self-viewing
file (exe) which outlook and Antigen both choke on. I would like the faxes

You can also help performance, if any of the problem servers have IMCs, by turning off
outbound SMTP scanning.

Also have you tried setting it to Max Performance mode with only one
scanner selected? This will help.

If your servers were already busy before installing Antigen then it can
cause performance problems. Take a good look at the performance counters
for disk queues, CPU, etc and see where the bottleneck lies. We found a
few servers needed extra memory to counter some disk queue issues after
installing both Antigen and a monitoring agent.

Sybari Tech support may also point you to some hotfixes to improve the way
it handles certain messages - e.g. zipped attachments.

E2K Logging question

2003-01-31 Thread Michael A. Brown
Hello,
I have an E2K SP3 system and am having some trouble with emails being sent
and not arriving at their external destinations. I've turned up logging on
the Virtual SMTP Server, and chose all options in the Advanced Properties
page. Going through the log, I seem to only see incoming emails, not
outgoing. I can see the emails in the users Sent Items, but need to trace
it from there. Any suggestions? (By the way - I am posting this for Jeff
Dubyn so I'll refer wisecracks, condescension and flames back to him!!#$!!)

Thanks,
Mike Brown

I USED to be able to go to Microsofts site, select Downloads - Exchange 5.5,

Doesn't work anymore.

OWA Contacts Public Folder problem

2003-01-31 Thread Dan Bartley
It seems that if we do a Find from OWA, E2k, SP2 in a Contacts Public
Folder it only searches fields until it finds an entry and then stops
searching on that contact.

SharePoint 2001 E2k Public Folder content indexing has the same problem,
but that makes sense since it uses the OWA to index it.

Specifically, if there is a first and last name entered as well as a
company name and you search for the company name, it will not find the
contact. It will only find it if you search on the first or last name
entered. If there is no name entered it will find the contact based on
company name.

Has anyone encountered this? Is there a way around it?

TIA

Best Regards,
Dan Bartley

RE: Sybari Antigen Problems with Exchange 5.5

2003-01-31 Thread BBC Exchange 55 List Server Public Folder
Also have you tried setting it to Max Performance mode with only one
scanner selected? This will help.

If your servers were already busy before installing Antigen then it can
cause performance problems. Take a good look at the performance counters
for disk queues, CPU, etc and see where the bottleneck lies. We found a
few servers needed extra memory to counter some disk queue issues after
installing both Antigen and a monitoring agent.

Sybari Tech support may also point you to some hotfixes to improve the way
it handles certain messages - e.g. zipped attachments.

RE: OWA and Voice Mail

2003-01-31 Thread Roger Seielstad
Why not build a round robin DNS entry for a few GC's, and set the TTL to
something insanely short, like 1 minute? If you're able to specify the
server by name, there's no reason you can't overcome that limitation.

That being said, there is still a high degree of old school mentality in the
telecom arena, and this sounds like yet another example.

RE: Masquerading

2003-01-31 Thread Roger Seielstad
Absolutely nothing is wrong.

Sendmail (and a few other *nix mta's) offer the ability to completely
destroy the integrity of the message headers.

Not to mention, the from address isn't only stored in the header, its stored
in the message body most of the time too.

GC!. That's THE keyword. GC. It depends heavily on ONE GC. It does NOT
know
how to seek and use other available GC for its lookups. It has to be
hard-wired to just one. This would be fine for a one-site, small
network.
But, in my Multi-Site, multi-GC, Multi-network environment, this has
been
nothing but a PITA.

That's my primary gripe. Recovery from failure is an exercise in
voodooism..
Of course, your experience may vary.

Re: OWA and Voice Mail

2003-01-31 Thread prontomail
GC!. That's THE keyword. GC. It depends heavily on ONE GC. It does NOT know
how to seek and use other available GC for its lookups. It has to be
hard-wired to just one. This would be fine for a one-site, small network.
But, in my Multi-Site, multi-GC, Multi-network environment, this has been
nothing but a PITA.

That's my primary gripe. Recovery from failure is an exercise in voodooism..
Of course, your experience may vary.

Hey that turbine blew out on takeoff.
Did I forget a bolt?

Try looking in Technet for 0x800A01A8 and see if you can find something.

One of our users mistakenly deleted his past Friday's calendar information
through his PDA. We do have a backup of our Exchange server data for this
past weekend. My question is there any utility in exchange which will let
me restore only his calendar information from the backup. Any assistance
would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
