If I use MandrakeUpdate to download the new kernel and headers (2.2.16), what
do I need to do to install the new kernel prior to rebooting? ie, rerun lilo,
anything special since my box is all SCSI (hd's, cdrom)?

Patrick,
rpm -ivh package.rpm
or were you looking for a GUI method?
Start xwc (hopefully it's installed!)
Navigate to directory where RPM exists
Right click package
Select Install
Double click package opens "rpminfo" or something with a description of the
package and an install option.
Is it normal for the auto-install of 7.1 to skip the installation of my network
adapter and the configuration of TCP/IP? This seems a bit odd. The nic is a
3c59x compatible 3c905B-TX. A quick reconfig with DrakConf had everything up and
running in no time.

It seems that the extra tarball containing the default themes and styles was
not used when setting up the Window Maker RPMs for 'Drake 7.1. Am I correct or
are these just in a different spot than where the menu seems to think they are?

For weeks I have been plagued with errors when trying to install Linux on my
new machine with it's Adaptec 2940U2W and Seagate LVD drives. Previously I would
receive errors such as:
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
and
SCSI host 0 ch 0 reset pid 0 timed out - trying harder

Since upgrading from 'Drake 6.1, I have been unable to print from my Linux box
to a printer attached to a Windows machine elsewhere on my network. The printer
does work, other machines can print to it.
I have Samba 2.0.6 installed (not from rpm) in /usr/local/samba and I have

maybe both drives are on the same scsi id.

Does anyone know if 7.1 has addressed the problem with the 2940U2W not being
able to properly detect my Seagate LVD drives connected to my 2940U2W? This
problem has kept my new PC acting as a doorstop for several weeks now while I've
searched for an answer to this problem. I've tried installing

I am making an assumption that they are. However, I just noticed that the
drives are no longer being detected as "LVD", they are coming up as "Ultra2-SE".
I _believe_ this may have changed when I swapped

One question: How is it more secure to log in as a user and su to root,
as opposed to allowing direct root access? The only thing I can see is
that your root password will be buried in the middle
Upon installing 'Drake 7.0, I wind up stuck prior to "second stage" with
SCSI resets. Tried to install 6.1, same problem. The messages indicate
timouts on SCSI ID 0, and "trying harder" is the next indicator. This
appears to be an endless loop.
I've seen this problem posted before, but no
A quick guess would lead me to believe that something in your profile is

I have a couple of ideas here. First, I don't think you should show a
route between the two machines - flat network, no routing necessary once
the packets hit ethx. Second, can each machine ping itself?
