Binyamin Netanyahu tells US: We won't stop east Jerusalem settlement building Israeli prime minister defiant ahead of visit from US special envoy, George Mitchell, despite deadlock in peace talks * Rory McCarthy http://www.guardian.co.uk/profile/rorymccarthy in Jerusalem * guardian.co.uk http://www.guardian.co.uk/ , Thursday 22 April 2010 13.10 BST [Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu] The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that construction in east Jerusalem will continue. Photograph: Sebastian Scheiner/Getty Images Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu has reportedly told the US administration that his government will not stop settlement construction in east Jerusalem, despite US pressure and long-running deadlock in peace talks. The message was delivered to US officials at the weekend, according to reports by AP and the Wall Street Journal, and comes ahead of a visit to the Middle East http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middleeast by George Mitchell, the US special envoy, later today. Mark Regev, a spokesman for Netanyahu, would not discuss the details of Israel http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/israel 's talks with the US administration but he said: We want this process to succeed and to see the restart of talks. We hope that this is possible soon. Earlier this week Netanyahu insisted again that construction in east Jerusalem would continue. The Palestinian demand is that we prevent Jews from building in Jewish neighbourhoods in Jerusalem. That is an unacceptable demand. If we made it in London or made it in New York or in Paris, people would cry foul, he told US television network ABC. He admitted there were outstanding issues with the US. We're trying to resolve them through diplomatic channels in the best way that we can, Netanyahu said. Relations between Israel and the US sank to a new low last month, after a tense meeting between Netanyahu and President Barack Obama in Washington. Details of their discussion have not emerged, but it appeared Obama wanted Israel to stop building in Jewish settlements in east Jerusalem as a prelude to restarting peace talks with the Palestinians. The Palestinian leadership says it will not return to talks without a full halt to settlement construction, in line with the US roadmap. There have not been direct peace negotiations between the two sides since before Israel's war in Gaza early last year. Israel claims sovereignty over east Jerusalem, which it captured in the 1967 war and later annexed, and Netanyahu has insisted construction must continue there. Internationally, east Jerusalem is regarded as under Israeli military occupation and settlement on occupied land is illegal under international law. The US administration spent much of last year trying to convince Netanyahu to halt all settlement construction. Netanyahu refused and agreed only to a 10-month, partial halt to construction in the West Bank - a moratorium which expires this autumn. Mitchell then spent many months trying to prepare indirect negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, but a day after an agreement on so-called proximity talks was announced, Israeli officials gave approval for 1,600 new homes in an east Jerusalem http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/14/israel-palestinian-territor\ ies settlement during a visit by the US vice president, Joe Biden. Biden condemned the decision and the indirect talks collapsed before they had begun. Israel has yet to restore its relations with the US and a refusal by Netanyahu to halt east Jerusalem settlement building would only prolong the confrontation. However, the Wall Street Journal said Netanyahu would offer other incentives instead, including the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, the lifting of some checkpoints on the occupied West Bank and allowing some more goods to enter Gaza, despite the long Israeli economic blockade. Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, said he hoped Mitchell would bring the right formula to allow indirect talks to start. Mitchell is expected to hold meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders from tomorrow. Several US officials have emphasised the importance for the US of progress in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. Jim Jones, the national security adviser, indicated this week that progress in the Middle East would help Washington curb Iranian nuclear ambitions. Advancing this peace would ... help prevent Iran from cynically shifting attention away from its failures to meet its obligations, he said. Israel has long argued that confronting Iran ought to be an international priority. But Avigdor Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, this week resisted any suggestion that a peace agreement should be imposed on Israel and the Palestinians. Any attempt to force a solution on the parties without establishing the foundation of mutual trust will only deepen the conflict, Lieberman told diplomats in Jerusalem .

Whoever said military intelligence was a contradiction in terms? These ideas are brilliant, the stink bomb is priceless but has an obvious flaw in that it would depend, as far as I'm concerned, on wind direction. Which also helped stop the LSD bomb going into production. Bringing it back down to earth, when I was with the NLP we did a public discussion on GM foods. A group of people with science backgrounds and strong opinions each had twenty minutes to persuade the audience that GM was a bad thing. The TM guy wasn't much good as he didn't mention the TM belief that DNA is structured in consciousness and therefore introducing GM would affect our ability to get enlightened and without that he didn't have much to say. Of course, a sceptic would say that he didn't have much to say anyway and, deep down, he knew it so kept quiet. But that's another story... The most interesting one of the panel was a science fiction writer (can't remember his name) who had researched a sinister idea for a book he'd had, and that was to engineer poisonous foods release the seeds into an enemy food supply. You'd never know until you'd eaten it that it would kill you. He had all sorts of hideous ways you could do it but felt bad about writing the book in case it put ideas into impressionable heads! [FairfieldLife] RAF suspends flight training because of volcano damage
This is actually rather worrying because the sky over my house is now chock full with it's customary flock of passenger jets. It's rather sad to see the nice white clouds against the deep pure blue sky that we had for six days replaced with the straight white contrails of airliners on a decidedly brownish background. But not as sad it will be if one of them suffers engine failure and drops onto a busy town.. RAF flight training suspended over volcanic ash deposits Flight training on RAF Typhoon jets 'temporarily suspended' at RAF Coningsby after Iceland volcano ash found in engine Mark Tran http://www.guardian.co.uk/profile/marktran and Richard Norton-Taylor * guardian.co.uk http://www.guardian.co.uk/ , Thursday 22 April 2010 15.41 BST http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/apr/22/raf-flight-training-suspended-\ ash#history-link-box [Typhoon at RAF Coningsby] RAF flight training at RAF Coningsby has been suspended after ash was found in one of the Typhoon's engines. Photograph: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images Flight training on RAF Typhoon jets was temporarily suspended today after safety inspectors found deposits of ash in one of the fleet's engines, the Ministry of Defence said. Safety inspectors took the precautionary measure to check all of the jets based at RAF Coningsby, in Lincolnshire, after finding small deposits yesterday. A spokesman added: These are very high performance jets so they are just being extra cautious. The government has come under criticism from airlines for shutting down UK airspace, so it may feel vindicated by the the MoD's decision. The ash was found on one of the jets which landed at the base yesterday, the spokesman said. They were flying as normal yesterday. Operational flying will continue. RAF sources said, however, that the ash would not affect operations, specifically the 2 Typhoons on Quick Reaction Alert status, ready to scramble immediately in the event of a suspected terrorist hijacking of a civilian airliner. The Typhoon is a multi-role combat aircraft and the Typhoon Squadron at RAF Coningsby was launched in July 2005 after a multibillion-pound contract was agreed. Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain formally agreed to start development of the aircraft in 1988, with contracts for a first batch of 148 aircraft of which 55 are for the RAF signed 10 years later. The highly capable and extremely agile aircraft is powered by twin turbofans to Mach 2 at 65,000ft, according to the MoD. Earlier the head of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said that he was sure his actions would be fully supported if any inquiry was held into the ash cloud crisis, that prompted the government to close down UK air space, stranding thousands of passengers. The CAA chief executive, Andrew Haines, also denied that his organisation had been under government pressure to get UK airspace fully open again. And he added that he made no apology for the fact that the flight ban had been imposed for so long, stressing that safety had to be the priority. It was the CAA that introduced new guidelines which allowed a lifting on Tuesday night of the days-long restrictions on most UK flights. A genuine, independent inquiry would back our position. Our position was a robust and safe one, Haynes told the Press Association. He went on: Th e transport secretary Lord Adonis has been fantastic over this. Not once did he pressure us to make a decision. We have developed new international guidance which has been applied across Europe. Haines said that while previously-closed airspace had been reopened in Europe several hours before UK airspace restrictions were lifted, it had been vital to ensure that everything was safe before a UK decision was made. He went on: I make no apologies for the fact that airspace reopened in the UK 14 or 15 hours later than in some areas of Europe. I will never apologise for putting safety first. I am sorry that so many people's travel plans have been disrupted, but safety was the priority.

Bees see world 5 times faster than humans http://www.discoveryon.info/2010/04/five-times-faster-than-humans.html April 21, 2010 [http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YuR6V_Yr7Bk/S87Osu2b6SI/EqQ/NDNeTf-sY\ so/s400/bumblebee.jpg] http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YuR6V_Yr7Bk/S87Osu2b6SI/EqQ/NDNeTf-sY\ so/s1600/bumblebee.jpg Bees see the world almost five times faster than humans, says new research. This gives bumblebees the fastest colour vision of all animals, allowing them to easily navigate shady bushes to find food, says Peter Skorupski and Lars Chittka from the University of London. The ability to see at high speed is common in fast-flying insects; allowing them to escape predators and catch their mates mid-air. However, until now it wasn't known whether the bees' full colour vision was able to keep up with their high speed flight. This research sheds new light on the matter; suggesting that although slower, it is also about twice as fast as human vision. Skorupski says: We can't easily follow a fast flying insect by eye, but they can follow each other, thanks to their very fast vision. How fast you can see depends on how quickly the light-detecting cells in your eye can capture snapshots of the world and send them to you brain. Most flying insects can see much quicker than humans, for example so they can avoid getting swatted! said Skorupski. Bumblebees use their advanced colour vision in many ways. Skorupski explains: Bees were the first animals that scientists proved to have colour vision, and they have since been shown to put it to good use; navigating dappled light and shady areas, recognising shapes like their hive entrance, and particularly for finding nectar-bearing coloured flowers. The experiments show that the bees burn more energy to see in colour than they would to see in monochrome (black and white), raising questions about how they make the most of it. These findings were published in the Journal of Neuroscience. [FairfieldLife] Gay and bald? President suspects fowl play.
Gay and bald? Evo Morales thinks you ate too much chicken Bolivian president causes homophobia storm by blaming 'deviant' men on hormone-reared fowl [Some chickens] Eva Morales, the Bolivian president, has suggested that eating chicken can cause homosexuality and baldness in men. Photograph: Evan Kafka/Getty Images/Evan Kafka Male pattern baldness and the mysteries of human sexuality are no puzzles for the president of Bolivia http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/bolivia , who has declared they are caused by eating chicken. Evo Morales has claimed that both homosexuality and baldness can be caused by the humble chicken. Speaking at an environmental conference on Tuesday, Morales said chicken producers injected fowl with female hormones and insisted that when men eat those chickens they experience deviances in being men. The Bolivian president since 2005 added that eating chicken could make men go bald. Morales's theories do not appear to have been immediately accepted by the scientific community, to put it mildly, and have been criticised by Spain's National Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals, which sent a letter of protest to the Bolivian embassy in Madrid describing the president's remarks as homophobic. The president of the Argentina Homosexual Community campaigning organisation, Cesar Cigliutti, said: It's an absurdity to think that eating hormone-containing chicken can change the sexual orientation of a person. By following that reasoning, if we put male hormones in a chicken and we make a homosexual eat it he will transform into a heterosexual. The dubious potential effects of hormone-infused chicken aside, Morales's warning may be out of date anyway as chicken producers in Europe, the US and many other countries abandoned the use of hormones in poultry several decades ago. Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Obama Will Triumph -- So Will America
I also found the commentary to be a bit over the top and most likely Democratic Party propaganda. Most of the thinking progressive and liberal writers and talk show hosts aren't giving Obama any near that much a pass. That said, I might also remind people here that during the election season I said the Republicans ran John McCain because they knew they wouldn't win, didn't want to and gave McCain his last hurrah. They also added Palin to make the ticket even more unwinnable. Many here scoffed at the idea. Republicans didn't want to win because they realized the mess that had been made and that they could dump it on a Democrat and thought that they most likely could take back the administration in 4 years. I've also said that Presidents are nothing more than late night car salesmen selling the cars or policies of their handlers. We had a nightmare 8 years with the Bush dictatorship and the people don't need continuation of any of those policies. Unfortunately Obama has failed to discontinue many of them. We'd like to know why? And unfortunately Obama seems to be firmly in the hands of Wall Street. Oh we do hope the government really does something about Goldman-Sachs but fear they'll get nothing more than a slap on the wrist when there should be a lot of frog marching going on. Liberals and progressives are supposed to be the brightest of people, people who think. But like any political movement critical thinking gets thrown aside with a rah-rah for the home team by those who prefer to be TB'ers. ditzyklanmail wrote: This topic of loyalty, oh triumphant deserves a commercial break. : ) Ode to Vogon Poetry: Twenty somethings in line to help finish the wars that were started and I guess must continue because one can only solve a war by continuing war. [FairfieldLife] Potato for Alzheimer's Cure
Home Potato Virus May Harbour Alzheimer's Cure The humble potato may hold the key to Alzheimer's treatment, suggests a new study. According to the research, virus that commonly infects potatoes bears a striking resemblance to one of the key proteins implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and researchers have used that to develop antibodies that may slow or prevent the onset of AD. Studies in mice have demonstrated that vaccinations with the amyloid beta protein (believed to be a major AD contributor) to produce Ab antibodies can slow disease progression and improve cognitive function, possibly by promoting the destruction of amyloid plaques. Some early human trials have likewise been promising, but had to be halted due to the risk of autoimmune encephalitis. One way to make Alzheimer's vaccinations safer would be to use a closely related, but not human, protein as the vaccine, much like cowpox virus is used for smallpox immunizations. In the August 15 Journal of Biological Chemistry, Robert Friedland and colleagues used this concept on an amyloid-like protein found in potato virus (PVY). In their research, the team injected PVY into mice followed by monthly boosters for four months. The researchers found that the mice produced strong levels of antibodies that could attach to amyloid beta protein both in both solution and in tissue samples of Alzheimer's patients. And although the levels were lower, mice also developed Ab antibodies if given injections of PVY-infected potato leaf as opposed to purified PVY. The researchers note that potato virus is a fairly common infection that poses no risk to humans (many people have probably eaten PVY infected potatoes). While tests of PVY antibodies will ultimately determine how useful they can be, they may be a promising lead to treating this debilitating disease.

US: Progress in implementing Consciousness-Based Education ... by Global Good News staff writer Global Good News21 April 2010 In the United States, Consciousness-Based Education initiatives are moving forward, and a documentary is being created on participants' experiences with the programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Also, support is increasing for establishing a group of 8,000 Maharishi Vedic Pandits at the Global Capital of World Peace in the Brahmasthan (geographic centre) of India. Dr Robert Roth, Vice-President of the David Lynch Foundation, recently presented with Dr George Rutherford, an expert with long experience in Consciousness-Based Education, to a major non-profit organization that works with several thousand schools and over a million students. The presentation was very warmly received, and they look forward to several schools beginning to implement the Transcendental Meditation Programme, with potentially more to follow. Speaking on Maharishi Global Family Chat,* Dr Roth, who is also National Director of Expansion for the Global Country of World Peace in the US, also reported on a project he is leading, to record video documentaries of people's experiences with Maharishi's programmes. Those being interviewed include Christian priests, rabbis, business leaders, and the general population. Dr Howard Settle, co-founder of the Howard and Alice Settle Foundation for an Invincible America, explained the Global Peace Initiative with its goal of raising support for a group of 8,000 Maharishi Vedic Pandits at the Brahmasthan of India. Within weeks of the group being established, he said, we will find all other programmes for peace and prosperity becoming fulfilled, so this is the one thing we have to accomplish above all others. Dr Howard and Dr Alice Settle are warmly appreciated worldwide by the leaders and members of the Global Country of World Peace for their great devotion, generosity and far-sightedness in dedicating all their resources, creativity, and time to fulfilling Maharishi's goals and taking this unique opportunity to create a peaceful world, said Dr Roth. * Dr Roth's and Dr Settle's reports were featured on the 20 April 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Aren't you forgetting that Arabs are Semites ... the descendants of Shem/Sem, eldest son of Noah and brother of Japheth/Yapheth and Ham/Cham? It really all depends upon who says it. They observe the Hindu tradition against eating Nandi. However as westerners (well maybe some) beef cattle are not Nandi. My guru actually told me not to eat beef about a month after he initiated me. He also told me it would ruin my meditation. I didn't tell him that I had eaten a cheeseburger since the initiation as well as some pasta with a beef sauce. Neither effected my meditation at all. Maybe they would as an East Indian usually doesn't have centuries of ancestors eating beef. However just because of how careless the beef industry is I decided it might be a good idea to stay away from beef to not get mad cow disease. emptybill wrote: Bhairitu, Why would beef be banned for a transgressive tradition like Hindu Tantra? Bill: Aren't you forgetting that Arabs are Semites ... ...the housing costs would go down in Jerusalem. Look, any Semite, Jew or Muslim, can live in Austin, Texas - we don't have any laws against anyone of any faith building homes here. Anyone can build a house in Austin if they are a citizen of the U.S. I don't see why anyone should be prevented from building a home in their own country just because of their religion. That doesn't even make any sense. That's my point, Bill.

The problem? They could not find a smell that was universally perceived as that loathsome and disgusting. What worked in one society didn't work in several others. Fascinating, eh? [FairfieldLife] Re: Jerry Jarvis Coming St. Paul, MN May 1!
Regarding the period of MMY's known sexual activity, it's fairly clear that it spans a period going back to the early 60s up until perhaps 1975 or '76. Joyce Collin Smith in her book Call No Man Master makes reference to MMY starting the habit of taking young female disciples into his room at the London Center in the early 60s and locking the door. It was noticed because up until that time, he had let it be known that his door was always open and that disciples were welcome to visit. That stopped once the door locking with young females started. Judy, I doubt that guilt stopped him in the mid 70s. (When did MMY EVER express guilt over anything he did?) I suspect that, as you say, more pragmatic matters of age, had more to do with it, along with the sheer hassle and risk involved. There's another incident that a few of us here are aware of that would shock many to their very toes. This one would have been around 1970. But that one must remain quiet unless the person involved ever decides to speak up publicly about it. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, authfriend jst...@... wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, tartbrain no_reply@ wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, authfriend jstein@ wrote: snip For that matter, someone who's been sheltered from normal social relationships with the opposite sex for as long as MMY was isn't likely to think about it either. Large assumption perhaps. Did he start his activity in the 70's? or the 50's? Or, as nabulous said, he did not comment even if Purusha took a getaway weekend. Maybe he could relate. Could be, but all the stories are from the '70s, as far as I'm aware. And in any case, even if he did mess around earlier, it still wasn't in a normal social context. It's a mug's game to try to figure out how MMY felt about anything, but I'm really curious. From what I've read, it seems the dilly-dallying took place during a specific period--I have the impression it was a decade or less--and then stopped. Your typical philanderer *doesn't* stop. So why did MMY? Conscience? The pragmatic aspects? Why the philanderer image? philander, to have casual or illicit sexual relations with a woman or with many women Sounds on the nose to me. Its surprising to me that many here seem to have this rogue image of the man -- it was all exploitive -- little red riding hood and the big bad wolf. Perhaps. But so many other possibilities. While some will differ, those are not the qualities I found in the man. But I explicitly drew a contrast with the *typical* philanderer. Did you miss that? And as far as age, there were some quite attractive mid-30's women around. (and some school marms -- its not a universal observation) Would mid 30's cosmopolitan European women have been OK? Maybe not so bad, but not really OK if they were disciples, again because of the power differential. The difference in authority and power between MMY and the women, however, is another issue That's the biggie, IMHO. It really changes the consensuality equation. It would with any powerful man who holds a lot of authority over a younger woman, but *especially* with a supposedly enlightened spiritual teacher and a disciple. I used to think along those lines. But I don't now. One can paint a picture of and image power sex, but I don't see it. I don't see him forcing himself on anyone, using power as a coercive threat. Neither do I, nor was that what any of the stories I read suggested--to the contrary. But that's just the point, a powerful man often doesn't *have* to do any overt coercing. Coercion is implicit in the power differential, at least to the extent that, as I said, it changes the consensuality equation so it's no longer balanced; it isn't a level playing field. As I have said, its quite plausible to me that it was more the inverse of that, if anything -- but I don't think anyone was forcing anyone. What was he saying -- if going down the former road I am am going to withhold enlightenment to you if you don't do me? And as I have said, I didn't see anything in the various stories that suggested he did anything along those lines, although it's very common in similar stories about other gurus. I have been shaken by relations -- particularly those that went south. Basket case for a bit. The world is full of stories of men and women having a rough patch when or as relations end. Most people understand this when entering relations. I think you might want to read some of the clinical literature on how these kinds of relationships--i.e., with a guru/authority figure--affect the women involved. It just doesn't work the same way, especially if the guru is viewed as holy/enlightened. snip How did J or others think it was going to end? To be the Mrs MMY? To be a consort for 30 years in the
