The 707 may have been as well. But the money could have been put to other purposes.

Narcissists and sociopaths believe they don't have to follow the petty
rules of behavior that constrain the "little people".

Of course there is a HUGE possible leap here.

To state -- people have their specific cultures, karmas, dharmas,
tastes, preferences, upbringing, etc, pre-realization and post is
obvious.

However, if one equates specificity from "the last push of the cart",
with realization having no correlation with increased satvic
behavior, improved ethics, improved "courtesy", love, compassion and
service, then one would be living in Bizzaro World.

This is where the concept of Laisha Vidya-remains of
ignorance-helps. Different point values openning to
their infinite value. From the Bhagavad Gita:
"Creatures everywhere follow their own nature. Even
the enlightened follow their own nature...what can
restraint accomplish?" We have made the mistake of

The climate on FFL is getting more and more unsetteling. In times of

Limousines?

Where did you get such a ludicrous idea?

Different gathering (John 13:1-11). Also, if
you'll recall, when Peter is reluctant to let Jesus
wash his feet, Jesus gets rather snippy about it,
saying Peter can't be his disciple unless he submits
to having his feet washed.

There's quite a bit more to the story than simple
humility and service on Jesus' part.

which is why Amma lives as she
> does. Can you imagine MMY doing something like that?

Is it a requirement for spiritual teachers to
live humbly, or is that an old cliche that we
accept without thinking, like the idea that they
can't charge for spiritual teaching?

Seems to me individual teachers have different
personalities; they don't all come out of a
cookie-cutter. Some may be comfortable living
in cramped, plain quarters, others may not be.

Yes, as I recall, that was also the argument used
for giving Rajneesh dozens of Rolexes and limousines.

Yes, but at the same gathering, as I recall, he washed the disciples’ feet to set an example of service and humility, which is why Amma lives as she does. Can you imagine MMY doing something like that?

It's in the nature of low lifes to complain about the good treatment
that devotees offer to great men. Your complaint (one out of your many
complaints against MMY) mirrors the complaint that so-called disciples
uttered against the woman who anointed Jesus with an expensive oil:

While I agree with the sediments posted here, one thing seems to have
been left out: out perfect an excust Mahesh has when this all goes
belly up. "See, I pay these people and still they fail me."

Mahesh can only see his own narcissistic goals and can only blame
others because they fail. He will never part with $ and will never
have the insight to notice that he has been wrong all along. Refer,
of course, to John Knapp's piece in the TM, The Odd Side in the files.

Mahesh has always set his standards/aspirations high and consistently
blamed others because they failed. No one, has ever had the courage
to tell him how idiotic some of his ideas are. But then, I was in the
thick of it when we were planning microwave towers to broadcast SCI
to the whole world and I was so out of it at the time that I never
questioned either the feasibility of how/who would finance it.

Mahesh sustains magical thinking like a soprano sustaining a high
note in a Mozart aria. But magical thinking is not reality.

Oh, well. Those with eyes and ears, etc.

Millions have been spent on MMY’s comfort and convenience over the years. Barry mentioned renting an entire floor in a posh Beverly Hills hotel so he wouldn’t have to encounter “commoners,” and how he freaked when he saw a maid on the floor. No expense was spared in building his suites in movement facilities around the world, some of which he never stayed in. His house in Vlodrop cost a mint. At one point the movement owned a Boeing 707 so he wouldn’t have to take commercial flights. The interior was completely renovated.

Contrast this with Amma who refuses to fly first class and whose apartment in her Kerala ashram is about the size of my kitchen.

No, but he is assigning control of (and if postings on this foruma
are to be believed) benefits to his relatives.

That would be an economic benefit for personal use.

Also, when funds are used for "whims" -- non-essential expenditures -
- these would go under the category of personal use as well.

What would some examples of this be? I dunno...flowers?

MMY certainly *controls* the TMO's funds, but he
doesn't use them to buy racehorses and yachts
and Rolex watches and vacation homes and other
rich man's toys. Nor does he appear to be saving

Everyone conveniently forgets that huge amounts of money were spent in India 10
years ago
to build the World Peace HQ or whatever it was called. Due to some stupid moves
on MMY's
part, they were fined lots of money and the entire complex was razed. It was in
all the INdian
newspapers and I think that John KNapp posted about it on a.m.t.

How do his nephews control the money? Being on the board of direcors of an
organization
doesn't give you complete control.

That's how Indians work. Everything goes back to relatives.

Somene on this forum mentioned that they knw Gurudev's family and THEY thought
MMY
had killed him. Leaving side this claim. who can even name a member of the
current
Pope's family? Family ties are nowhere near as important in Western culture as
they are in
INdia. We don't have castes and inherited nobility any more. It's built into
their religino.

But there have been instances where he has. Like the World Peace Project in 1979 where we went to Central America, S. Africa, Iran, etc. The movement took out loans to finance that.

I tend to agree.

Still, if the movement had a mere 200 million in
assets and invested them/mortgaged them to provide
a meager 6% interest per year, they could still pay
for these 2000 butt-bouncers using only the interest,
without touching a penny of the principal.

It's irrelevant in any case because I think we all
know there's not a ghost of a chance that Maharishi
will ever dig into his own pockets to pay for any
of his plans.

For that matter, I suspect we all know that after
the first month or two the promised 500 bucks will
never be paid anyway, no matter where it comes from.
The donors will probably be expected to keep paying
it to the TMO, but the TMO will never forward it to
the people on the courses.

That's why I despise those around him.

They should be remembered as the enablers around Breznev and Stalin

MMY certainly has money at his fingertips but I doubt he has 2 billion, for two reasons:
Most of it has been squandered on hare-brained projects.
His nephews control it and he couldn’t get it from them if he tried.

Technically correct.

But at the risk of repeating myself, I would like to see an analysis
done on MMY's and the TMO's finances in the same way that Forbes
magazine does an analysis of Fidel Castro's. For the past several
years, Forbes has put Castro on their annual list of politicians
with the highest net worth's...if memory serves me correctly, they
usually peg him as being worth about $100 million, plus.

Of course, in a communist country, this is not supposed to be so and
most if not all of these assets are certainly not in Castro's name.

Forbes is making this analysis and assigning this net worth to
Castro based upon his control of and benefits that flow from these
assets to him personally.

I wonder how MMY would fare if this same analysis and this same
standard of Forbes were applied to him.

I would be particularly interested to see how much net worth would
be assigned to him solely on the basis of MMY giving control of the
Indian Movement to his blood relatives.

When I first heard that he had placed his own relatives in positions
of control like this, I couldn't believe it. Anyone with a
universal vision for their movement, I thought, would never, ever do
such a thing. Just the PERCEPTION of impropriety in this day and
age is enough to fizzle your credibility in the eyes of the rational
world...even if the Shrivastavas and the Varmas were as pure as the
driven snow, perception is everything in instances such as this.

How could anyone do such a thing? What was MMY thinking?

There are probably lots of possibilities,
some of them positive, some of them not
quite so positive.

But the one possibility that never seems
to come up, and hasn't come up now for 40
years or more, is for Maharishi to actually
put *his* assets where his mouth is.

*He*, after all, is the person saying that
the world is in such shit shape that if 2000
people don't do the Hemorrhoid Hop twice a
day it's in danger of being destroyed. *He*
is the one appealing to fear, and to the
admittedly noble desire in his followers to
see their world survive into another day.

But at the same time, *he* is not willing to
pay for helping it survive another day. And
he never has been.

Doesn't that *tell* you something?

I mean, the guy is as much as predicting that
the world is fucked if these 2000 people don't
do the Gluteus Maximus Dance, and soon. But he
is completely willing to allow the world *to*
be fucked if the funds don't come through from
Someone Else. He's got the money to pay for all
this himself -- *more* than enough to pay for
all this himself. But given the trends we've seen
so far in TM history, he would clearly allow the
world to blow itself up rather than dig into
his *own* pockets to keep it from being blown up.

I'm ranting a bit here because the other day I
saw an old movie called "The Shoes of the Fisher-
man" that reminded me of Another Possibility. The
movie was a big Hollywood epic based on a best
seller, and had many flaws. But at the same time,
it had a few good points, too, one of them being
a great performance by Anthony Quinn as a simple
man who suddenly finds himself named as Pope, and
during trying times.

The times are *so* trying that there is about to
be a nuclear war between the USSR and China,
because the Chinese have been hard hit by famine
and are starving, and neither Russia nor any other
country will help them out by sending sufficient
aid. For reasons of simple survival, they're about
to invade their neighbor Russia, just to find food.

So what does the simple man who has just become
Pope do in this fictional movie? He does what Christ
would have done, and what NO ONE around him in the
Vatican wants him to do.

He vows to dedicate the total assets of the worldwide
Roman Catholic Church to battling this famine, and
thus to preventing this war.

It's fiction, of course. No Pope in history has
ever been that altruistic. To be honest, no Pope
in history has ever really given a damn how many
people starved or how many of them died in wars,
and no Pope ever will. They're politicians and
economists, not men of God.

Similarly, as far as I can tell, Maharishi has
never given a damn about the people of the world.
He talks about them ONLY as a way to get people to
give him more money. If he really believed the
words he speaks, and really cared about the world
he pretends to want to save, he'd walk his own talk
and put some of his *own* funds to work right about
now. But he doesn't. All he does is use the world's
suffering as a way to get people to give him more
money.

It's a pretty simple rule. When someone tells you
that the world will end soon unless X amount of
dollars are contributed to his cause, does the
person saying this have X amount of dollars?

If it turns out that he does (or in this case, has
easily a thousand times that many dollars) but hasn't
contributed them to the cause that he's trying to
convince you to contribute to, you're being had.

I dunno. Could it be wondering how someone
-- anyone -- could be so stupid as not to
realize that he could pay for this program
(that he claims is so important to the world's
future) himself from mere *interest* on existing
funds, while never depleting the principal.

Because it's either that or wondering how
that same someone could be so greedy as to
realize this and *not* do it, and in fact
expect other people to pay for everything,
yet again.

Those strike me as the only two options.
Do you see more?

If not, which of the two are you, as a loyal
follower of Maharishi, more comfortable with?
Is he terminally stupid or terminally greedy?

:-)

Heh. What personal assets and who has done the estimation?

If you're talking about TMO assets, that includes MUM (probably the largest
single asset)
which made $100K profit last year according to what was posted here.

I ask you, why do you care?

[FairfieldLife] Re: Scholarships Officially Announced

2006-09-12 Thread TurquoiseB
Well, this post (not quoted because it's complex HTML)
from George pretty much clears up any confusion about
*who* is going to be paying the 500 bucks a month (if
it's ever paid):

> "In thinking what he himself could do,
> Maharishi said he will ask the wealthy
> of America to support Fairfield Yogic
> Flyers with scholarships of $500 per month."

I don't know about you, but I'm truly touched.

The guy who runs an organization that has assets valued
in the billions of dollars is so worried about the state
of the world that he sits down and asks himself, "What
can I do?"

And the answer he comes up with is, "Why, I can ask other
people to pay so that these 2000 yogic flyers can do what
I want them to do."

It doesn't ever seem to occur to him that a much simpler
answer to "What can I do?" is "PAY FOR IT MYSELF."

Let's do the math together. He wants 2000 people flying
in Fairfield. Let's assume that at this point his credi-
bility is so low that in order to get them to do this
he'd have to pay *all* 2000 of them to do it. Let's
further assume that he can find 2000 people stupid enough
to do this for 500 bucks a month.

2000 * 500. That would come to one million dollars a month,
twelve million bucks a year.

For a guy whose personal assets have been estimated
at a *minimum* of 2 billion dollars, that means that the
answer to "What can I do?" is "I could pay for this
program myself for a year for less than one-tenth
of the INTEREST I earn on 2 billion dollars."

And yet the only answer *he* can come up with to the
question of "What can I do?" is "Demand that other
people pay for my ideas. Again."

So I ask you -- is THIS the "creative intelligence"
that decades of meditation creates in one of its
practitioners?
