Re: Nina's Timmy

2005-06-17 Thread catatonya
Hi Nina,

I'm glad Grace is feeling better.  I don't know about Timmy.  If the sneezing continues I'd go ahead and take him in.  If he tests positive you know you need to treat aggressively.  I lost my first positive to an upper respiratory infection that quickly turned to herpes and almost pneumonia..
tNina <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Hi Everyone,I just mentioned my Timmy to Michelle L. He's the one that miraculously tested negative, (remember the big debate over PCR testing to determine if FeLV is sequestered in bone marrow?). Anyway, as you know, my household and feral colony has been fighting some sort of bug lately. Tim had some sneezing and congestion and his third eyelids have been up for over a week now. I'm starting to get concerned. I should probably take him in to be tested while he's exhibiting symptoms, (because he's more likely to show positive then), but when it comes right down to it I'm chicken about what I'll learn. He seems perfectly healthy, except for his eyes, well he's a bit more skittish, but he can't see as well! I have him on IA and TF when I can get him to eat it. Do you think I should worry? Do you think I should have him tested? I'm trying
to figure out exactly what good it will do me to know for sure he's positive, (I'll never know for sure he's truly negative). My first bottle baby, Queen Ursula, had nictating membranes for a couple months at one point. The vets were never able to tell me why. An AC acquaintance told me it was because she didn't want to see how crowded the house was with cats at the time. Who knows, she may have been right. The condition went away without any other indications ever presenting themselves.Grace is doing much better. She's still sleeping more than usual, but yesterday she was very naughty, so I take that as a good sign. When she starts beating up Kimba again, I'll know she's made a full recovery. Thanks,Nina

Well,  I don't know what's going on, but both these links are sponsored by the Center for Consumer Freedom.  The center for consumer freedom is against all animal rights and animal welfare groups and animal welfare laws.  For example they believe that puppy mills should not be put out of business because it's their consumer right to raise puppies in farm type conditions to produce 'cheaper goods' for consumers.  etc... etc They don't believe circus animals should be 'protected' because it's the consumer's right to go to a circus. etc.

Re:Misha

2005-06-17 Thread catatonya
Melody,

The drippy butt sounds like IBD to me.  I've never heard of it being associated with leukemia...  As everyone else said, you don't have to worry about exposing the baby to Misha.  You might want to purchase a large dog crate/kennel or confine her to the bathroom when she has these flare ups though.

Usually IBD is diagnosed through an ultrasound of some sort.  Someone else would have to give you more info. here.  I have a kitten that used to go through this who is negative for leukemia.  We were getting ready to have an ultrasound though and he cleared up and hasn't had it now for several years (fingers crossed!).

Is their diet always the same?  Does she get treats?  Is there any way you can trace her bouts of diarrhea to her diet?

I would retest him in a year at his annual exam,
just because you'll already be there, and it can't hurt anything, and it may
help ease your mind. I wouldn't do it any time soon, or make a special trip to
do it, as really, what difference will it make? The important thing is that he
is doing good, and not having any problems. If he gets sick, and you have to
take him in, you could always retest then, but hopefully, your next vet visit
will be a year from now for a routine physical!

One of my 3 kitties is + also, and while he doesn't have "drippy butt" he is still fine to be around me (I am expecting too- the vet and the OB said no problem, as did the friends on this list!).  The FeLV, from all the reading I have been doing and the help of these wonderful people, there is NO WAY a human can get FeLV or come to any harm from it.  I am praying that something will help the intestinal problems.  Keep Misha at home and love her, and your new baby will have a good friend too.

RE: Misha

2005-06-17 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
I am sorry that your Misha is having a problem - how long is she having
a problem? Was there any changes on the diet or environment? Have you
run a blood panel to see exactly what's going on with her? How did your
vet come to the conclusion that the problem is caused by the virus?

When you mentioned that you are worried about exposing the baby to her -
what will be your exact concern? Please know that Misha is not in any
danger to your baby at all -

It might be more difficult to pay extra attention to Misha once the baby
is born, but please try - she is going to need your love and care even
more so -
I really hope that you will not put her down while she is still lively
and playful and enjoying her life - she loves you, when it's really time
for her to cross (hopefully it's not going to be any time soon at all),
she will let you know -

There are lots of supports here - and we are here for you and Misha -
Hugs to you and Misha.

Hey out there I need some sugeestions/feedback about
Misha and what we should do with her.

Misha is six years old and tested pos for FeLV. We have
had her for almost 6 1/2 years. She is in good health
and none of the other cats (all share the same wate
dish) have FeLV. Misha's FeLV shows up, according to
her vet by attacking her intestines. She has chronic
bouts of what we call drippy butt. She leaves little
presents aorund the house. She has been on various
medications and recently the vet suggested Kaopectate
or Pepto Bismo, which made her problem worse.(gave her
pain and lots of diahreha) I have read aobut
medications to treat FeLV, none of which cure it just
maybe ease the symptoms. Does anyone else have a cat
with this type of FeLv and if so what do you do? Also
give me some feedback. We live in Gainesville, Fl and
my husband and I are expecting our first child in the
end of July. We have considred putting Misha down but
she seems to have so much playfullness and affection
(most of the time) that we really hate to. Money is a
problem and we are both nervous about exposing a baby
to her. Thanks for the help! Melody

Do not fret, FeLV and your baby will be fine, I have used pumpkin in a can to help make my kitties with loose stool. Please...please do not put her down, I have my + on Interferon and she mixes with my other 8 kitties, 1 dog and 1 son so please do not worry about speading it to you child. The Interferon I use is about $35.00 a bottle and it last about 6 months she is on 7 days and off 7 days...1ml oral everyday she is on it. Hope this helps

Michelle, I am sorry that Bramble is
having a problem – a skin problem is one of the hardest thing to identify
the cause of – as I read different materials – symptoms tends to
show on their skin easiest as it’s very surface of their body –

Have you happened to change the diet at
all?  I had one of my kitties whose patch started out as a size of penny,
in weeks, it ended up being a size of my hand – it always looked raw and
bloody, and did not know what was causing it – I tried different thing –
I did not use steroid because I was worried about side effects – I don’t
know exactly what worked – but I used an ointment (can’t remember the
name – but  I have it at home – it has a bit of steroid in it,
and it’s yellow) – and finally got better –

I also have a friend whose kitty had a
very bad skin problem,  and she was on steroid shot every 6 to 8 weeks or
so, and the owner did not want to do it anymore – and she changed her
diet with no preservatives and no more tap water, and she told me that her
kitty got better 100% -

I am praying that Bramble is only going to
get better – keep us posted!

demand a different vet. He either has an allergy which I suspect as he has
scratched around his ears since coming here despite having his ears syringed -
we can be sure that ear mites are not the problem as he also had the revolution
treatment. It may also be seizure related though as he also was tugging at fur
on his leg whilst grooming so I don't know. But saying that Minstrel also
has a bit of a runny nose and scratches her ears and she hasn't got ear mites
either. I will try a different food. Hopefully the vet will give him a steroid
jab to stop the itching.

I am scared because this is what happened
to my last FIV girl before we knew she was FIV - after they withdrew
treatment in preparation for dermatology her system collapsed. So he most
likely has an allergy and seizure problems and needs treatment for both. I'm
not sure if steroids would interact with seizure meds and his heart med.

I know – the main concern with
George is that – I have got to catch him while his appetite is there –
otherwise a trap won’t do any good – he already doesn’t have
much appetite – though when he doesn’t eat anything at all –
he still comes to my yard which is blessing to me -

Good luck Hideyo,

I have successfully trapped cats a 2nd time.  It's not as easy,
but if you let him go without food a bit he'll go in.  I would try with
the fish net if you've had luck with it in the pas though.  It's so hard
dealing with ferals.  They are just so afraid.  : (

Peggy, also, I just was thinking that it might be a good idea to talk to
AC to Flower so that you can hear her wish, and you can present your
dilemma and you guys can decide together as to what the best thing to do
for all of you, too.

Peggy,
I'm sorry about your losing Thorne. Such cute names, they all fit
together so well, I'm guessing the cats are like that too. If I were
you, I'd bring Flower home. The three cats were together for a long
time, I think if Flower were going to become positive, she probably
would have already. Petal may have had the virus when she came to you,
you can't know that she got it from Thorne. Is Flower vaccinated
against FelV? Is she healthy and strong? I understand your wanting to
protect Flower, but I think the quality of life is as important, maybe
even more, than the quantity. She must be missing you and Petal, and
wondering why she's been taken away. You are all mourning the loss of
Thorne, it's such a shame to have the other two separated as well. No
one can guarantee you Flower's safety, but we never have any guarantees
in this life anyway. My thoughts are with you.

RE: flower and petal

2005-06-17 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto

Peggy, I also now remember seeing the
article about – most of the cats have been exposed to the virus, (can’t
remember whether it was 60 or 80% according to the article, but anyway, it was
some significant number) but only a very small percentage will become infected,
and I am hoping that Flower is one of the majorities that do not get effected –

I also read a book written one of the very
famous vets, about how most of us think that these virus (whether it’s
FIV, or FIP or FeLV) are the which are killing our babies – however, these
disease are really not so much about the virus itself, but about their immune
system – when they are stressed and their immune systems are down, they
are more likely to susceptive to these virus whether they have been already
exposed or not – as for the corona virus, again most of the cats will be
tested positive for the virus titer (90% of mine are), but only small percentage
of them will develop FIP – again, it’s really not so much about the
virus as they are all exposed to it, but unfortunately only some with weak
immune system whether it’s generic or emotional or physical stress might
develop it –

So, I guess what I am saying is that,
Peggy, I feel that creating stress free environment for our babies will be the
most primary thing for us for them and anything else (including any integration
issue due to the virus) will become secondary -

Hi Peggy,

If I recall Thorne is the cat you lost?  If so, then if Flower and
Petal were both with Thorne for that amount of time I would think that if Petal
were going to get the leukemia she would already have it.  If it were me I
would bring Flower home.  That's what I did anyway.  My positive was
miserable at my mother's and her best buddy was miserable here without
her.  None of the other cats ever caught it from her and I have since
brought in another positive that I knew in advance was positive.

2005-06-17 Thread Mari Kolbe
I am so glad to see that this kitten is indeed going to be rescued.  The request for help has been posted on a dozen different lists by many people.   There have been a couple of offers to rescue this kitten but no one seemed to know if the kitten still needed help or had been rescued.  It would be nice Kat, if you could have the original poster you responded to forward this information to the original list with the request to cross post so that first everyone would know this little one has a home, secondly it does all of us in rescue good to see a happy ending to a rescue story - it is what keeps us going and thirdly time spent posting this kitten's plight could be then spent on the next little one who needs our help.  I know that there is a little blind kitten in Clayton, Alabama that really needs help finding a home and possibly one of the individuals who expressed interest in your little guy could arrange to have him transported to them.

Again, Kat - thanks for posting that he had been rescued and bless you for opening your home and your heart to this special little kitten.  We provide a forever home for special needs babies and have several little ones who are blind from birth defects, URI's or torture - they have got to be the sweetest little creatures.

Hi, I
mentioned to you a little bit, but I have been trying to capture one of my feral
boys, George for a couple of weeks now, I feel like he is getting thinner to me,
and he barely  eats (he sips juice from fish can’s soup) and
I am just so worried about this guy – He does not go into a trap since I screwed
it up last time, so I feel like the only chance I have in order to catch him is
with a fish net – I caught three cats in the pat with fish net – it’s more
riskier than trap, but I feel like I shouldn’t wait too long to catch him
because of his health condition– and don't know any other way that I can - I also have
an appointment to talk to Dr. Ryan (AC) so that I can find out more
about his condition now -  and if she has any meditation or suggestions as
to how I can catch him succesfully before it's too late
-

According
to Jasmine (AC)  whom I
spoke with a couple of weeks ago , he has a moderate kidney
problem and might have an infection with one of his long teeth (I have given
some antibiotics in his food for a couple of time) – he is also willing to be
adopted by me (at least he is willing to give a try) –
Please pray that I can successfully
catch him very soon and he will be safe and Ok until I can catch him!
  Thank you!

Nina,

You're funny. Well, thanks so much for the positive kick-in-the-ass!.

I've often thought of trying to self publish a series of books, or a
collection of short stories with illustrations featuring the "throw
aways" of the animal world. (Ah, but alas...if I wanted to get the
money together...I'd have to stop picking up animals in order to save
enough to publish.)

I have one started called "Too Old To Learn" that's a combination of
true stories about older animals, rescues and pound critters that
stresses that not only puppies & kittens can be taught, but older
"used" animals can learn to break bad habits and be wonderful
companion animals. The chapters include: "Frankendog"- about an
ancient, (horribly unattractive-God bless her), mange-ridden beagle,
Mabel, who finally gets a real home for the first time in her life -
we think she was a breeder dog who lived in a crate her whole
life...the SPCA estimated her age at 14..., "The Original Poodle" -
about a dog, K.C., I found wandering on North Avenue in the early
90's...once we had her shaved you -Honest to God- could see EVERY bone
and tendon in her body. The vet who shaved her actually walked out
into the waiting room to prepare the other clients for her appearance
before we carried her through. "Puddles" - the story of a dog,
Schatzi, who was submissive to start with but was turned into the
pound because her owner was afraid her husband would "dicipline her to
death"...she would urinate & duck everytime someone looked her in the
eye or reached for her. "Broken"- a three legged white lab/terrier
mix, Max, who not only charmed his way out of the pound but won over
an entire elementary school & its administration. "Demolition Dog",
-Moose, a huge brindle mastiff/great dane mix who was surrendered to
the pound because he was "impossible" to train...and he was, until
Taz, an older great perinese (sp?) who had been trained as a helper
dog for the deaf was surrendered too. Taz did what no human could
do...teach Moose to be civil and obedient. "Jezebell" - a skinny,
old, mangy long-haired cat that shredded every volunteer in the
shelter, but eventually learned not only to enjoy, but ask
for grooming. "Cats are Friends, NOT Food" -story of a
rescued-neglected standard poodle, Basha, approx.5-6 years old and
Jerrycat, (7 or 8 yrs. old), an 100% outdoor cat that chose instead to
live at the house up the street (Basha's house), BUT had to train
Basha to accept that cats were not fast food first- something that her
humans could not manage to do. It took two years but he finally wore
her and her people (really NOT cat people to begin with) down...and
now not only does he have control of the housebut he and his
brother use Basha as an afghan in the winter.

As you can tell, I've had more experience with dog rescue than cat
rescue...Quintapus was my first cat. I came to this website after I
rescued a Felv+ cat, Simms, and found his person on this list.

(Since I've had so many bad experiences with "charities" I figured if
I ever managed to get them published, I'd use part of the money to
help fund vet bills for families that adopt special need animals - to
encourage them to do so. That way I KNOW where the money is going and
that its being used wisely and NOT going to fund the non-profit
shelter owner's mistress' boob job...but that's another story.)

If I ever do manage to get published Nina, I'll let you know. Of
course, I'll have to...I'll need more stories... :-)

Thanks again.

He will need to go back to the vet tomorrow but he is not going to that particular vet - I'll demand a different vet. He either has an allergy which I suspect as he has scratched around his ears since coming here despite having his ears syringed - we can be sure that ear mites are not the problem as he also had the revolution treatment. It may also be seizure related though as he also was tugging at fur on his leg whilst grooming so I don't know. But saying that Minstrel also has a bit of a runny nose and scratches her ears and she hasn't got ear mites either. I will try a different food. Hopefully the vet will give him a steroid jab to stop the itching.

I am scared because this is what happened to my last FIV girl before we knew she was FIV - after they withdrew treatment in preparation for dermatology her system collapsed. So he most likely has an allergy and seizure problems and needs treatment for both. I'm not sure if steroids would interact with seizure meds and his heart med.

2005-06-17 Thread tamara stickler

Nina,

You're funny.  Well, thanks so much for the positive kick-in-the-ass!.

I've often thought of trying to self publish a series of books, or a collection of short stories with illustrations featuring the "throw aways" of the animal world.  (Ah, but alas...if I wanted to get the money together...I'd have to stop picking up animals in order to save enough to publish.)

I have one started called "Too Old To Learn" that's a combination of true stories about older animals, rescues and pound critters that stresses that not only puppies & kittens can be taught, but older "used" animals can learn to break bad habits and be wonderful companion animals.  The chapters include: "Frankendog"- about an ancient, (horribly unattractive-God bless her), mange-ridden beagle, Mabel, who finally gets a real home for the first time in her life - we think she was a breeder dog who lived in a crate her whole life...the SPCA estimated her age at 14..., "The Original Poodle" - about a dog, K.C., I found wandering on North Avenue in the early 90's...once we had her shaved you -Honest to God- could see EVERY bone and tendon in her body.  The vet who shaved her actually walked out into the waiting room to prepare the other clients for her appearance before we carried her through.  "Puddles" - the story of a dog, Schatzi, who was
submissive to start with but was turned into the pound because her owner was afraid her husband would "dicipline her to death"...she would urinate & duck everytime someone looked her in the eye or reached for her.  "Broken"- a three legged white lab/terrier mix, Max, who not only charmed his way out of the pound but won over an entire elementary school & its administration.   "Demolition Dog", -Moose, a huge brindle mastiff/great dane mix who was surrendered to the pound because he was "impossible" to train...and he was, until Taz, an older great perinese (sp?) who had been trained as a helper dog for the deaf was surrendered too.  Taz did what no human could do...teach Moose to be civil and obedient.  "Jezebell" - a skinny, old, mangy long-haired cat that shredded every volunteer in the shelter, but eventually learned not only to enjoy, but ask for grooming.  "Cats are Friends, NOT Food" -story of a rescued-neglected
standard poodle, Basha, approx.5-6 years old and Jerrycat, (7 or 8 yrs. old), an 100% outdoor cat that chose instead to live at the house up the street (Basha's house), BUT had to train Basha to accept that cats were not fast food first- something that her humans could not manage to do.  It took two years but he finally wore her and her people (really NOT cat people to begin with) down...and now not only does he have control of the housebut he and his brother use Basha as an afghan in the winter.

As you can tell, I've had more experience with dog rescue than cat rescue...Quintapus was my first cat.  I came to this website after I rescued a Felv+ cat, Simms, and found his person on this list.

(Since I've had so many bad experiences with "charities" I figured if I ever managed to get them published, I'd use part of the money to help fund vet bills for families that adopt special need animals - to encourage them to do so.  That way I KNOW where the money is going and that its being used wisely and NOT going to fund the non-profit shelter owner's mistress' boob job...but that's another story.)

I can't remember exactly how many, but it was such a lesson to me in tenacity! Have you ever looked into the smaller publishers? My husband had a novel published by a small regional publisher because of the special interest the local in the story held for them. Perhaps you could get just enough of a story line and a few pictures to "pitch" the idea to smaller publishing houses. You could also think about approaching rescue groups or animal activist groups with the idea of paying for publishing and a portion of the proceeds could go to their charities. Have you ever

Hello all,
I'm working on the legs for a run from southern CA. up to WA. (June 25th thru June 26th)
This is a urgent rescue effort in saving few Siamese cats that are going to be on death roll. They will be crated and current in vaccinations.
We have southern Oregon covered up to Portland. I will cover the Portland area up to Arlington, WA if need to.
It would be much appreciated if I could get some Transport Volunteers from Portland to Seattle.
Ventura legs are being worked on right now.
The concern is getting the legs filled from Sacramento area up to southern Oregon.
I will give more details as they come in.
Please contact me if you would like to help in this matter. Your time would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Sometimes Grace will do this trembling thing and it always upsets me,

paranoid. Try not to let it overwhelm you and keep an eye on her.
