Neville Please add to the CLS
I am sorry and saddened to say that Jen had to let poor Neville go tonight.I got to say good bye to him earlier. He was one of our Hurricane Katrina cats. My nick name for him was Slim Shady. He was a very odd and exotic looking boy. Also could you add Nova to your prayers, she is having problems now too.She is a feisty beast with major attitude but we love them ALL. THanks so much Sherry - Ready for the edge of your seat? We reversed his anemia with this combo. Procrit used in humans is at a much, much higher does and shouldn't scare anyone off from using it with cats that are anemic, any cats with CRF end up using it in the later stages as the kidney disease eventually interferes with the production of erythropoietin which the Epogen, Procrit and the new drug called Aranesp help to produce. In my mind your cat WILL die if the enemia isn't reversed period, so if there is something that may help what have you got to lose?? Below paragraph my opinion (based on what my vet told me when I asked her about this): PS. Has your cat been on a minimum 4 to 6 week course of Doxocycline for possible hemobartonella? Even if he tested negative he should have gotten this (my opinion). Hemo is very hard to test for and many cats tests negative again and again before it is finally found. Though they are never cured of hemo the doxy will put it into remission. If they don't have it it isn't going to hurt to get the doxy but my very well save their life if they have an undiagnosed case of hemo. -- Belinda happiness is being owned by cats ... I really believe the folic acid helped the anemia. I used some more immune vitamins from onlynaturalpet.com. If you need any more info, you can email me direct. Are you in Texas? Re: Sylvester changed to "Boots"
I am so fortunate to have some really really great clients. I really liked this guy because he was such a warm, caring compassionate person. And he did so much for his cat. And he did so much for a cat that was his ex wife's. How many ex husbands would do that? Being a petsitter has helped heal my heart some what, because prior to this job I worked as Animal Intake & Clinic Nurse @ the Austin Humane Society. Boy, talk about learning how to bite my tongue. And the funny thing is,I don't always like all my clients, but it doesn't matter, I don't have to. As long as they take care of their animals that's all I care about. And some of the things they do for their pets is amazing Susan J. Boots would insist on always being in between them when they would be on the couch, etc. Anyway, Boots would be visited by me 3 times perday when he was out of town and 2 of those times it would be for her meals (whipped Pet Guard or Wellness w/ her meds purified water added, and it had to be warmed up in a double sausepan.) She also recieved fluids. Boy, did he love this cat, only client I ever had that insisited on me removing my shoes when I entered his home, he did not want any germs to be brought into her from my other clients or my own cats. (Now I have a policy where I always remove my shoes or wear the "nurse booties". I liketo respect people's homes) When Boots finally was in her last leg of her journey on earth, she could not walk and had to be carried everywhere. I of course, would need to clean her up,because she could not make it to the box. She was still so alert tho, and she was eating great. On the night that she died, he knew her time had come. He stayed up w/her all night, and about 4am he passed out from exhaustion for just a few moments, when he woke up, she was gone. We believe that she needed to go, but could not as long as he was awake. And the interesting part was, this cat was the last of 3 cats that he inherited from his ex wife when she died. Re: Question about eye ulcers
Michael, I found Bailey at 5 months of age, positive then. I lost him last May at 11 years of age. He had just turned 11 years old 5 days before he passed. He wasn't sick his whole life except for the last 6 months when he became anemic and quit eating. We fixed the anemia but he still wouldn't eat and was lethargic and had conctant diarrhea, from his symtoms we knew he had cancer somewhere and tested and tested for it, ultra sounds everything we could think of, couldn't find it. By the time I finally agreed to let my vet do exploratory surgery he was too weak and I brought him home and he passed with us on the couch about an hour later. Necropsy showed us he had pancreatic cancer, that's why he wouldn't eat and was lethargic with constant diarrhea. He was the happiest, silly cat I've ever known and the sweetest. If you go to the Yahoo! main page, and click on 'Photos' under More Yahoo! Services, you will see at the side "Have you heard the news?". That's where it says they are closing. Plus, my husband got an email telling him they were closing. If you have photos embedded INSIDE one of your Yahoo! groups, that does not qualify. Those photos will stay. :) Wendy "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world - indeed it is the only thing that ever has!" ~~~ Margaret Meade ~~~ - Original Message From: Gloria B. Sylvester came off a farm where I take care of a dwindling (thanks to TNR) cat colony. He got very sick about 2 years ago and I took him to the vet...of course it was more than being sick, he had FeLV +. So he came home with my other cats (I had few other positives then, after today down to two now and soon to be one-CW is anemic and fading, too). He was big when I got him, about 16 pounds despite being so ill. After many at the vets' and then living at home, he was up to 22 lbs! He stayed pretty healthy for about 1 year and 4 months (he was probably 7 when I got him). He always had a little cough the vets thought was asthma (and yes, we checked and re-checked this). But recently, he was not the same, more coughing, high fever, not eatingturns out his blood counts were all haywire. Low RBC, Low white count and low plateletsthe antibiotics for the fever made his tummy hurt, too. So at the vet yesterday I asked if it was time to let him go (he lost 2 lbs in a week), the vet didn't think so bec. of course, he perked up at the vets' and purred and pranced...He got a vitamin B12 shot and his very first steroid shot (yes, we discussed that steriods in a FeLV+ cat were a last resort). When we got home, he had a good night. He ate some, and hung out with me and the others (he had been staying under the bed except when I would drag him out for meds). He even played some and tried to squeeze into a tiny box like he used to. This morning I awoke to a few sounds of slight distresshe was sleeping under the bed again (actually, the cats tore the bottom fabric of the box springs and he would sleep inside the box springs). I reached down and touched him and told him I was there and then went to get a carrier to go to the vet. In the seconds it took for me to run downstairs and get the carrier and come back up, he was gone. I had to cut the rest of the fabric to get him since he would lay furtherst from the opening. I pulled him out and he was still, he looked very peaceful--no signs of struggle on him or under the bed. This is the very first cat I have had that died at home (and I have a cabinet full of cremated remains)...it was not terrible, but I did not plan it. Last night was so good for him, I guess he had only one last good night in him. He died with me nearby and in the place he felt safest, under the bed. I took him to the vets' so he can be cremated. I don't think he suffered but a few short seconds if that. I gave him permission several days ago to leave if he needed to, I guess he needed to go today. Although I will miss him, several of my other cats will not. He was a gentle giant, but a few of my smaller cats terrorized him if they got the chance. He never struck out first and usually retreated, but he was always a sweetie to people. Please think good thoughts for Sylvester.

Re: Typical course of a dying FELV kitty?PLS READ
I have experienced BOTH having a feleuk positive cat die at home and a feleuk positive one I thought was dying survive. The difference? The one who I thought was dying (it was Isabella who is doing GREAT NOW) continued to eat. She wasn't eating as much but still defecating and eating SOME. She was miserable. She had many other symptoms (high temp, anemia, spasms or seizures, pain or false pain, hiding). I called the vet one day when I was sick with worry and asked if it was time. He said not if she is still eating. This was over a month ago and she is (for now) symptom free ~ we found the right combination of meds, etc. I had no idea Stripes was dying (my first cat to die so I didn't know anything about it). Wasn't eating or drinking. We took him to vet every day or so for fluids and vitamins. He later changed locations and laid in his litter box for a couple days (or so?). I regret deeply putting him through this. When I finally realized he was dying- when he started having trouble breathing and was coughing. I called the vet to have him euthanized. We went outside to dig his grave while waiting for the vet and when we came back in he had died. This is my experience and I will never have a cat suffer to death again. I wish you and your kitty Moeman the best, Laurie

Re: Typical course of a dying FELV kitty? long letter- sorry butplease indulge
I used epogen (same thing as procrit) when my Bailey was anemic along with prenisolone because we suspected the virus was in his bone marrow supressing his immune system and interfering with blood building. Theyc an always apply for someof the FLOCK cats, through Best Friends. It is my understanding that they will fly them via a volunteer pilot to their new homes. 39 out of 400+ tested felv+, so far. Not sure how many more need to be tested, or whether they are friendly. It was set up as a feral "sanctuary", but ferals do turn friendly, espeically when they are sick, in pain, etc.. Hi Susan, Yes, I am a member of the fiv group..I never posted much there, but I read alot..there is alot of info in the archives there. You have to be approved and give your kitties complete history. It is well worth it though.. Bandy was on all the things you mentioned + many more..I always gave him 30mg Co Q 10 daily. I really believe the folic acid helped the anemia. I used some more immune vitamins from onlynaturalpet.com. If you need any more info, you can email me direct. Are you in Texas? We are in Stephenville just west of Ft. Worth. He got 500mg lysine daily, too. The fiv never really gave him problems..I think all were related to felv. It never fails to make me cry when I read these posts...It seems like each one of the little guys has their own special way of saying goodbye to us and it always seems like they are also thanking those people who stuck by them and loved them so much. I know he was special. One thing about loving a cat is you can never regret it...Love from us here in Nebraska. Sylvester died at home this morning
My giant (well, he used to be) ol' farm cat died this morning at home. Sylvester came off a farm where I take care of a dwindling (thanks to TNR) cat colony. Anyone have any FeLV cats ...NY area
Since i have moved here in April, I have been at a sanctuary in Franklin, NY It is run by a judge and her husband from NYC...wonderful place. They had 2 + cats. One died. She is looking for a couple more to keep the one remaining one happy. Anyone know of any friendly cats? They have a vet on site. Try pettinic. It's an iron supplement you can get from your vet. I don't know anything about giving a human iron supplement to a cat. I've never heard of anyone doing it. I wouldn't give my cat anything like that without checking with the vet first. tonya glenda Goodman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Wow! Thanks! I had the animal medical suppy place trying to find this stuff for me under iron supplements...no wonder they could not pull it up. I guess if my vet does not hurry and get back to me in the next hour I will be off to buy some human iron supplement. My cat Dingo does not do pills well at all, so will have to give with a dropper. He also has always been a dainty eater...can't stick it in tuna...He has really been turning his nose up lately and I am realizing I have an emergency on my hands...If it were not for this list I might not have noticed... Re: Question about eye ulcers
I would go to the vet. I know it's stressful, but you have no way of knowing how to treat something like that without seeing the vet and possibly an eye specialist... I hope Jingles pulls through this. My first leukemia kitty pulled through pneumonia and herpes at about 1 year old and then lived on to about 7. tonya Susan Loesch <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: One of my feleuk babies, Jingles, who is about 5 and was most likely born positive, has been going downhill over the last couple of months -- pretty much the typical course of a failing feleuk+ kitty. But he has a new problem right now and it is one I have never seen before. His eye was watering; in trying to wipe it and medicate I noticed what looked like a wad of yellowish-white "eye goop" and I tried to wipe it away -- but it is an ulcer - a lump, for lack of a better term - attached to his eye. I have started him on lysine, because in other ways the eye looks herpes-y -- but I have never seen a lump on the eyeball like this. Anyone??? I haven't yet taken him to the vet -- hate to put him through the stress if I don't have to -- and you guys know way more than most vets when it comes to feleuk!
Re: Update 08/24/07
Ahhh, thanks so much, Michael, for the great update! Yes, they will eat less of the Evo because it has a higher content of meat. Grains are pretty much just "fillers",especially for cats. As for the Elegant Medleys, I think they are good for the Missing Link due to they have the veggies in them, which help shide the ML.. Make sense? This is something that I do also, I open 3 cans in the morning, divide up into 6 bowls. I add the Lysine, then the Link & then I fill the empty cans half full w/water (getting all the leftover gravy) and add it to their breakfast. I stir it around. This helps 2 ways, it creates more kitty juice (Mm, gravy...) for them and they love the broth, and also it helps them get important fluids. They cannot have too much water. Even if they lap up all the broth but don't eat the meat, I don't care, because the broth has all of their vitamins anyway, make sense? I usually leave their bowls out for about 5 to 6 hours, then whatever is left gets tossed. At night I open 1 or 2 cans, same thing, add the supplements & more water. I hope this helps, and please post what your new vet @ UT tells you after your appointment, I am anxious to hear especially about the "supportive care". Thanks & have a great weekend! Susan J. They have an appointment on Tuesday, September 11 for, as Dr. Dolen wrote, "FeLV workup and medical supportive therapy." It gives me some hope. We'll see. Ideally, I'll be able to consult with UT at least twice a year, and use the very close vet for emergent situations and maintenance. The girls continue to eat the fancy feast with the Lysine and Missing Link supplements in it. They actually didn't seem to mind it at all. They're working on the conversion to the Innova EVO dry food. Right now it's about 80% Purina naturals and 20% EVO. They're eating it, but a bit slower than they were the Purina Naturals alone, but this is normal from what I read? I'm also looking into buying a thermometer, as a temperature is one of the early warning signs of infection. I've done my research, and found the WNL temperature for a cat is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the heart rate is 140-220. (This site has great information on it: http://www.cathelp-online.com/emergency/vitals.php). I really am hoping I can give them many more years with very careful care and attention. Do you guys have any thoughts on thermometers? I've found this one (http://www.pet-temp.com/pet_temp.htm) , any of you own one or have a better recommendation for an ear canal thermometer? I am really 95% positive they absolutely would not tolerate a rectal thermometer. Also, I just wanted to mention that I recently looked over the FeLV Fund store, and just loved the "Feline Leukemia is NOT a death sentence" and "There is LIFE with Feline Leukemia" messages. It provides hope. You all know I've had a rough time with this, and that's a message I needed. I'm going to order the license plate frame! Thanks for everything guys, and I'll email again when I have an update. Michael -- Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com.
Re: To Michael Re: Update
You could put them on interferon. Some people have had success with this. also transfer factor if that hasn't been mentioned. tonya [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for the info. I'll definitely look into better foods. Do you all think its ok to mix in their morning and nightly Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys? There are three of them, and they share a can each morning and each night, so they average only 1/3 of a can at a time, but its something they have come to expect. I guess I'm wondering if there's something wrong with giving that to them. They've been on the Purina Naturals dry food, but I'm going to switch over to something with no grains and high proteins. I'm going to look for the Innova Evo, but I don't recall ever seeing it. I'll be sure to look for something with no grains tomorrow. As for the nutritional supplement recommendation, I've already gotten Lysine and Echinacea, but haven't been able to get them to eat it yet. I'm hoping they will when they're feeling better. They did eat tonight, so that makes me feel better now that I've seen them eating. As for the supplements, are those the only two recommended, or is there something else? And do you guys mix that in the dry food, or in their wet food? Luckily, we rarely ever have guests, and rarely leave for more than a couple of days at a time (and my sister is here with them when we leave, with whom they are very familiar, she has been living here on and off). They did not vaccinate the cat they knew had tested positive, but vaccinated Poppy because they ran out of ELISA tests and had to send in an IFA test with her along with Grizzabella's. I'm not comfortable with this vet office treating them, so that's why I'm going in the morning to get them to refer them to University of Tennessee School of Veterinary Medicine. I looked up the hospital tonight, quite impressive...they have 10 exam rooms, 7000 dogs/cats a year, an intensive care unit, specialists in every field you can imagine, it looks very promising: http://www.vet.utk.edu/ The vet's office bothered me because they didn't even recommend an IFA test to verify her positive ELISA test. They just said she had it, period. That didn't sit well with me. I feel very personally responsible for them getting sick and I'm taking this very hard. But all I can do now is make sure they have the absolute best care possible. Ok, to summarize, here's what I need input on from you guys: 1. Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys...1/3 of a can morning and night...is this ok? 2. Dry food...brand recommendations 3. Supplements...any recommendations other than lysine and echinacea, and do you put it in wet or dry food? 4. Treatment options? Do you use the ImmunoRegulin Or Interferon Alpha in healthy cats, or is that treatment options you use when they're symptomatic? Thanks for all the support to everyone and all the emails I've received. It really helps me to feel like I have some sense of control over the situation, and I'm not just completely helpless.
