[Felvtalk] Tora maybe got the beginnings of lymphoma

2009-04-14 Thread amanda
Hi all, I went to the vets with tora last week for a check up before getting
him neutered and his lymp nodes under his jaw were still swollen from his FeLV
related stomatitis. The vet gave us some antibiotics for one week, when we went
back yesterday his lymp nodes in his neck were a tiny bit better but one lymp
node in his back left leg is swollen, which wasn't swollen last week!! He
hasn't got a fever and he hasn't lost any weight, though he's always been slim.
We suspect it to be the begining of lymphoma, I will take him in tomorrow for
interferon injection x 5 days in a row, will it help? it did last time when he
only had the neck lymp nodes swollen. I want to start something natural to help
slow down the growth. I already am adding CoQ10, DMG, immunoplex to his diet,
he's been on a raw diet since last December, I also added Mega C plus ,My
husband is also doing accupunture for him, Is there anything else that I can
try? what has worked for your kitties? My husband told me to try ginseng, the
korean one , which I mixed with liquid organic royal jelly and some water, has
anyone tried that? tora doesn't act sick, he runs around with his siblings and
and while outside dueing the day in the garden will often catch birds. i
wanted to get him neutered, but the vet doesn't think it's a good time, what
shall I do? wait? any advice would be greatly appreciated!! hugs and purrs

Re: [Felvtalk] Tora maybe got the beginnings of lymphoma

2009-04-14 Thread Jane Lyons

Hi Amanda
My kittie had very swollen glands when we first got her. It took
quite awhile for
them to return to normal. I do not remember exactly how long it took,
but it must
have been several months before they were completely normal. They
were in her neck

and were very enlarged (the size of walnuts). She too has stomatitis.

Our vet used antibiotics and we got her on a good diet and used DMG,
l-lysine, Transfer Factor,
and anything that we could think of to help her immune system. That
was over two
years ago. She is still thin, and her mouth fluctuates from inflamed
to almost normal, but
she eats well, is energetic and is living ( as I perceive her) a
happy, contented life.

It sounds as if you are doing everything you can to help Tora. I
think that your vet is right
about waiting to neuter him. That would be a stress that he doesn't
seem up to.
I hope that you are dealing with an infection and not lymphoma. We
had no idea what we
were facing and it took time for her to recover. I hope that Tora
will recover too.

Please keep us posted.

pills.?

I've read about vetricine and I assume that it's ok for cats but I wondered if
anyone else uses it or has heard of it.? It's a white powder.?

And I've about given up on the interferon because he just gets so low when he

Re: [Felvtalk] OT - will kittens born to mom with URI have URI?

2009-04-14 Thread jbero tds.net
URIs in a mother can certainly be transmitted to the kittens after birth.
It depends on the phase of infection the mother is in. If she is infectious
when the kittens are born, certainly transmission is possible. If the
infection is resolving, she will be less likely to transmit disease and will
often have a good immune response that will be conferred to the young
through her breast milk.

With respect to the URI being transmitted prior to birth. This is
unlikely. URIs are generally passed from one cat to another through either
inhalation or direct contact. Therefore, the young will not be born with
URIs. (It could, however, be transmitted this way after birth as mother and
young are in very close contact) The concern that I would have, however, is
if the mother has a systemic infection (involving the blood stream) that
could be transmitted to the young while in utero. If it clinically just
looks like a URI (runny nose, sneeze, cough, runny eyes, pussy or purulent
discharge) I would be less concerned, If, on the other hand, she has a high
fever, is lethargic and not eating, I would be more concerned.

Either way, I would recommend treating the mom with something that can be
safely used during pregnancy.

Good luck.

[Felvtalk] questions about how to handle an felv+/non-symptomatic cat

2009-04-14 Thread kimberly

hey guys,
i've been lurking around here for a little while, gleaning what info i can --
you all are such a great source of info about this disease and i'm so glad i
found this mailing list.
here's my story:
finley, a little gray tabby male, started showing up outside our loft window
last june. we lived right downtown, a block away from the freeway, so we were
very nervous for his safety. we fed him consistently until we moved in august.
we moved to a quiet neighborhood with TONS of feral cats, so we trapped him and
brought him along with us. he was as feral as feral can be ... so we kept him
separated from our cats in a back bedroom. at the end of september, he finally
fell for the trap again and we were able to get him in to be neutered + tested.
he tested negative at that time. we continued to keep him locked away and work
on domesticating him -- meanwhile, we let him play footsie with our 7 cats
under the door and we did let him outside a total of 3 more times, thinking he
could possibly fit in with the feral family living on our block. however, we
heard a few fights on nights when he was out and we really were attached to
him, so we decided to make him
indoor only. our vet suggested having him tested again before introductions.
he tested felv+ on 2 tests on valentine's day.
we tested 2 of our kittens that had had some small interactions with him, and
luckily they were negative.
we tested finley again, 8 weeks later, on thursday, april 9th. he is still
positive, although the vet showed me the test and i *thought* the positive dot
looked lighter than i would expect. i really am interested in trying LTCI
because it sounds so promising and i'd like to give finley every chance
possible.
he is totally and completely asymptomatic, and i'm guessing he contracted the
disease sometime in october or november. i mean, this cat has never even had a
crust in his eyes! he's had 2 small bouts of diarrhea, but i'm nearly positive
those were caused by a fishy flavor of food. the diarrhea cleared immediately
with some fiber + probiotic and we do not feed him those flavors anymore.
our vet looked into LTCI, interferon, and acemann and felt neither were proven
to help with anything. he also said that these drugs are meant for + cats with
symptoms of the disease already. he also says the virus can never be faught
off. he also has no experience treating felv, however.
someone please help me!
can you guys tell me that there is a chance finley could still fight this
virus? i'm going to start researching to find a vet that knows more about the
disease -- i live in the kansas city area, if anyone has any suggestions? what
else do you guys think i should try? lysine? vitamin c?
also, has anyone on this list successfully kicked the disease? i have a friend
of a friend that did nothing special for their cat, but he supposedly became
negative after 3 years ... does that happen often?
many many thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Jenny! The babies were born on Easter (5 of them). The only symptoms
the mama has are: she is hoarse when she purrs and she sounds like she is
swallowing mucous sometimes. Foster mom started L Lysine on Monday. She is
keeping a close eye (she had a mama and litter last summer for whom she had
to syringe feed because of severe URI). Fortunately she is a nurse. Btw
these are cats that come into a no kill shelter ready to deliver. My friend
takes about one mom each year and finds homes for everyone, too. She is a
angel! I will share your email with her. Thank-you!

I found it here you go:
FERAL CAT ORDINANCE OF BREVARD COUNTY AS OF 2001
SECTION 4
Sec. 14-64. Feral animals and feral cat colonies.

(a) The County may establish a fund or provide services to
offset costs of trapping, neutering and vaccinating captured feral cats that
can be returned to an appropriate, controlled, and registered colony site.
Caregivers for such colonies, whether one or several animals, will be aided
by the County in properly managing and caring for those colonies, to the
extent that funding is available.
(b) Each feral cat colony will be registered by the caregivers
with an agency designated by the County, which will serve as a clearinghouse
for information on current caregivers, education for new caregivers, and
assistance for persons found in violation of (d)(1) through (4) below.
(c) Any feral cat picked up by Animal Services and Enforcement
which has an appropriate ear tipping or other distinguishing mark indicating
that it belongs to a registered feral cat colony will be returned to that
colony unless veterinary care is required or the criteria listed in 14-64(d)
applies. The designated agency will be notified in such instances.
(d) Any person or caregiver determined to be in violation of
subsections (1) through (4) below, shall be issued a written warning and be
allowed a period of time to come into compliance, or provide satisfactory
evidence of working to achieve compliance. That period of time shall not
exceed ninety (90) days from issuance of the initial warning notice. Failure
to comply shall result in violation of this article, which may result in the
issuance of a citation. Caregivers of feral cat colonies shall implement
proper management and sterilization practices as follows:
(1) Register the feral cat colony with the agency designated in
(b).
(2) Assure responsibility and arrangements for feeding the cat
or cat colony regularly throughout the year, including weekends, holidays
and vacations of the feral cat caregiver.
(3) Sterilize (neuter) all adult cats that can be captured.
(4) Vaccinate, as required by law, all cats that can be
captured.
(a) Against rabies, preferably with a three-year vaccine.
(b) And any other infectious disease as mandated by law.
(5) Make every attempt to sterilize all kittens over eight (8)
weeks of age and before sixteen (16) weeks of age.
(6) Make every attempt to remove kittens from the colony before
eight (8) weeks of age for domestication and placement.
(7) Make every attempt to remove sick or injured cats from the
colony for immediate veterinarian care or humane euthanasia.
(8) Ear crop all cats with a single cut preferably on the left
ear, at least one (1) inch from the outside tip of the auricle. Providing
either a tattoo on the inside the right ear or an electronic implant will
aid in animal identification.
(9) Maintain proof of sterilization, vaccination, tattoo or
implant and medical records for all cats. These records must be provided to
Animal Services and Enforcement upon request.
(e) Animal Services and Enforcement has the right to immediately
seize and remove all, or parts, of any colony for the following reasons:
(1) Public health and public safety concerns including rabies,
other epizootic and certain zoonoses identified by the County Public Health
Unit; or
(2) Animals creating a public nuisance as defined in section
14-36. The designated agency will be notified within twenty-four (24) hours
of removal of any feral cats.
(3) In the event the feral cat caregiver fails to comply with
this section, the designated agency will be notified at least a day before
removal of any animal. The designated agency will attempt to resolve the
situation prior to removal by Animal Services and Enforcement.

Do you mean for TNR or against TNR?

My city actually has old laws prohibiting the public from trapping but we
 do
it constantly and the county is now recognizing tipped ear ferals as
 owned
 to a degree.

Check out Brevard county (FL) who has had more progressive ordinances for

[Felvtalk] My baby boy Spatz

2009-04-14 Thread griscome
Hello, I'm hoping someone here can give us some information or insight.
Our little tuxedo boy is 8 years old and has been healthy until recently.? He
started hiding out and just not acting his usual sweet self, so we took him to
the doc.? He was given antibiotics for a week and still not well - better, but
not well.? His blood tests showed severe anemia..so blood transfusion, more
antibiotics and prednisone.? We were sent to a specialist, who tested and got a
weak positve for FELV.? Retest showed positive, so now we're struggling with
whether to try interferon (our vet has not had good results) or LTCI (Imulan).?
Does anyone have feedback regarding LTCI?? We're willing to try it, but don't
want to make our boy go through more injections if the outcome is just
survival, we want him to have a good life, you know?
The weird thing is, he has had the FELV vaccines, and tested negative in 2004.?
Our other boy is 12 years old and negative, but we hate keeping them apart.?
I'm so glad I found this forum, I'm just torn up about what to do next and felt
there was nowhere to turn.
Thank you all!

well, I did. My vet just insists that it can't be what is causing him to
be sick on those days. He swears it must be a coincidence but it happens
EVERY TIME, after about 3 days of interferon. He says it just doesn't make
them sick.

2009-04-14 Thread Jane Lyons
I noticed when we were giving MeMe interferon daily that she became
lethargic
and slept a lot. We are now alternating one day on and one day off
and I think that is working

very well. I would tend to believe your cat before your vet.

Yup, I agree...sounds like a reasonable protocol to try. Gloria
