Well, it could be stomatitis, which brushing wont help. A vet visit would be a good idea. Stomatitis is more common in FIV+ cats than in FELV+ cats. The wonderful people on the FIVCATS2 group on yahoogroups would be a great source for gum issue questions, they've all gone through it
