Re: [Felvtalk] Testing the list

2015-09-21 Thread Jenn Trotter
I am new to this group and never posted but now that I see some activity I
was hoping to jump in a little and maybe get some opinions on my
situation.My name is Jenn and my adventure started in August. I will make
it brief as I can. We adopted 3 kitties from our vet earlier this year,
shortly after putting down our precious calico from cancer. The 3 kitting
were all tested, given shots, spayed/neutered etc. Everything was great but
the runt started to lick cement from the fireplace hearth in early August.
I called a vet at the practice I go to and they said it didn't mean
anything but I could bring her in if I wanted. I decided against it but
noticed her sleeping more and just not moving much. Finally I said I can't
take it anymore and took her to my favorite vet (especially because her
gums were so pale - something i learned with my other cat) and her PCV was
at 12%. Next thing I know I am taking her a blood transfusion. She went
from testing negative for Felv, testing positive and then negative. We also
had IFA's done at two different labs and one was negative and one was
positive. She had a bone marrow biopsy (and needed another blood
transfusion) and the IFA from that was negative. No cancer or anything was
found. Basically, we may never know if she truly has it and her system will
be able to clear it but it was not in her bone marrow so she has a fighting
chance. The diagnosis is that it is an auto-immune non-regenerative anemia.
She just finished two different antibiotics and her pred was upped to 10 mg
twice a day. Her last blood work which was last week shows that she is not
anemic, her platelets are increasing but her neutrophils have taken a dive.
They are not as low as when this first started but they did improve. My vet
and the specialist was against trying LTCI as they were no studies to back
up the claims. Right now she is doing great, not running any fevers. I was
told that if she is truly Felv infected or this is just autoimmune then the
treatment would be the same. Her brother and sister have tested negative
and are thriving and all three were dropped off at the vet the same time.

Any thought or questions I might be asking? Any treatment options I may not
have researched to death? I am so sorry we are having to deal with this for
our poor babies.

Fw: [FIVCats2] JuneAmy day 7

Subject: [FIVCats2] JuneAmy day 7

We areback from MadisonShe came throuigh well. I never did see the resident in charge
(which I thinkis not nice) but the report she sent through is that she
felt the abdominal mass is somewhat smaller that JuneAmy seems to feel a
bit better than last week. They did not do another ultrasound, which
surprised me, as I would have been happy to pay for it had indicated that
I favored it, but her bloodwork was ok. Her HCT is at30 which is
actually a bit higher than last week. Her WBCs, contrary to going too low, are
actually somewhat high! They are attributing that to stress possibly. But
at least it wasn't low. Her liver values are still up considerably but
they feel that is either due to the pred or the lymphoma.

So they went ahead gave her the
Vincristine. We'll see how that goes. She's still on the pred, but 7.50 mg
daily instead of 10.

Yesterday she ate several times on her own
came out to the kitchen last night. The night before, during the night,she
had also eaten on her own, all of the shredded chicken Purina DM (high
protein) that I had left for her. So I hope I'm doing the right thing. If she
had not seemed a bit better, I would not have taken her in today but the fact
that she did seemed to me to indicate that we should keep trying.

It was very odd. While she was at the vet hospital
 I was driving to Starbucks from MadCat, I was listening to Air America, as
I always do when I am in Madison (where I can get it), it was the woman
named Stephanie. Can't remember her last name. Anyway her dog Chester had died
suddenly on Friday her other dog, Sally,has bone cancer. She had
apparently been talking about this - Chester Sally - on the air
since then because many of the listeners who called in spoke about losing pets
(interestingly mostly cats!) how they felt about it, what they died
from. I thought is was higly "conincidental" (?) that this should be on at
this moment in JuneAmy"s my short life so far together. I could not decide
what message if any I should take from it though.

JuneAmy, FIV+ please send positive vibes her way (or prayers, if so inclined)

2006-04-19 Thread Jenn

From the FIVCATS2 list, can we add
JuneAmy to the CLS, and can anyone send peaceful, and loving vibes her and Pam's
direction? At least sweet JuneAmy is passing with the love of an OWNER by her
side and not in the shelter where she was for so
long...

Pam Norman
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  JuneAmy went to the vet hospital in Madison today
  as an emergency - she has not eaten on her own since Sunday then only a
  little bit, had had only one poop since Saturday, was starting to have
  some difficulty breathing. Today she had xrays of abdomen chest,
  an abdominal ultrasound, bloodwork, fine needle aspirate.

  The news is all bad very bad. She has
  large cell lymphoma which is very fast growing. Ini dogs it can literally go
  from nothing to a critical mass in days; in cats it can be only weeks. Which
  explains why no one at the clinic ever felt it. There is a huge mass in
  her abdomen, her liver is "inundated" with cancer (vet's words"), with
  multiple masses in spleen lymph nodes. Thereis a suspicious spot
  on one of her lungs (they will analzye that further tomomrrow moning as the
  lung xrays were taken late), there may be kidney involvement too. The
  prognosis is very poor. The vet says she is amazed that she is not looking
   acting much sicker than she does considering the amount of cancer she
  has. She said that if I had not brought her in, she would probably be
  gone in days.

  We discussed options  the complicating
  factors of the FIV. The vet noted that JuneAmy had clearly had a rough
  life has aged physiologically far beyond her years. Despite the fact
  that many cats do respond well to chemo for lymphoma, with this particular
  kind the very best hope for prolonging life is a maximum of 6 months
  that is generally when the cat is healthy to begin with. She felt that if we
  treat JuneAmy responds to treatment, we might get a month or
  two.

  So more discussion. The Madison oncology protocol
  in well known in veterinary circles but my vet there felt that JuneAmy could
  not tolerate it, that it is too aggressive might kill her, given her
  condition. So what we are doing is tentative. Today she had a subq
  injectionof 2000 units of l'asparginase she will have 10 mg of
  prednisone daily for 7 days at which time, if she is responding, they want to
  see her again would begin some version of the full protocol. If she does
  NOT respond, then there is no hope whatsoever. And we will know about that in
  the next few days. If she does not respond, I will let her go. We
  don't think she is in any pain, but she is uncomfortable depressed. I
  don't want to prolong that either. If she does respond starts to eat
   seems to feel better can have that for a few months, then I want
  to give that to her. But if she does not, then I can't prolong things any
  further, for her sake.

  Meanwhile if she wants to eat, she can have
  anything she wants. I picked up some frozen fish filets in case she would like
  that. I will get some chicken livers tomorrow if I can, for sauteing. If
  she doesn't eat on her own, then I will spoonfeed her A/D. I know the
  cancer is "eating" a lot of what she takes in, but I still have to give her
  the full component of calories per day. I have some PolyMVA left over from
  Troika since the expiration date is not until 2008, I will give her that
  too.

  This was not the way it was supposed to be. She
  was supposed to live happily ever after, or at least some years, until some
  FIV-related thing reared its head. She's been here only a bit over 2
  months! I emailed Robert, the shelter owner in NYC where she was for so
  long, I talked to him on the phone today after I heard the news from the
  vets. He is devastated. He loves her too.

Hello From a New Member and Bartonella QuestionHello,I thought
that now would be a good chance for me tointroduce myself to the
group. I am a doctoralstudent in Connecticut, and first got involved
withferal cats when I helped my aunt catch, socialize, andfind homes for
four feral kittens living under herdeck when I went home to the midwest for
a longweekend. I used Alley Cat Allies fact sheets
forguidance. Upon returning to Connecticut, I joined alocal rescue
group in New Haven, and now serve ontheir Board as development
director. I continue tovolunteer for this group, and also do private
rescuework on my own.I do have a situation that I would like to
describe toall of you, and would appreciate any feedback or inputyou
might have. I recently trapped and socialized aferal kitten living in
a parking lot. The kitten hasa wonderful home, with a close family
member. We arefostering him right now, until he is well enough to
goto this home. He was very sick when I caught him andthe
veterinarian who treated him thought that it wasCalici. After treating
him with Clavamox, he waslater diagnosed with a urinary infection, and
treatedwith Baytril. When I took him in to be neutered, the
veterinarianindicated that the lymph nodes in his hind legs werestill
swollen (I was cognizant of this swelling, andwe were actively monitoring
it). He was tested for,and diagnosed with, Bartonella. He has
been onZithromax for just over two weeks. While I have notedsome
decrease in the swelling of his lymph nodes, theyare still undeniably
swollen.May I ask if any of you have faced a similar situationand,
if so, how long it typically takes the swellingof the lymph nodes to
significantly decrease? Although I am relatively new to rescue work, I
amaware that Bartonella is tricky to treat. I wouldvalue any input
you might have, and thank you inadvance for it.This group seems
wonderfully supportive, and I lookforward to
contributing.Sincerely,Ermelinda

UPDATE on the FELV and FIV cats from RPC in Maine

2005-11-14 Thread Jenn

Some of you will remember the FIV+ and FELV+ cats I had listed on my
website for a while who needed to be placed by RPC in Maine (I sent out many
emails trying to help place them). Many of you may have wondered about them
since then. I have good news. The cats were all accepted by a new sanctuary in
Iowa, and went there a month or so back.

This is thesanctuary the FIV and FELV cats from RPC in Maine went to,
I told you I would passthe infoalong if they got back to me. They
did! It's: http://www.kittiesfromheaven.com

On another great note, their hind end paralysis cat, Jupiter, who has been
posted on my webpage forever ALSO is in foster care, and the family will most
likely be adopting him! So RPC has had some great success lately! I SO happy for
them! And for Jupiter, of course! I'm going to miss his face on my webpage now
that he's found a home! He's such a poster child for handicapped cats!

Please pass along the URL for that FIV sanctuary, it sounds like it may be
useful if it turns out to be a good one. Maybe someone in that state could do a
"home visit" of it and let us know if it is a "good" one? Does anyone have any
contacts in Iowa?

unexpected link between feline and human AIDS viruses

2005-09-11 Thread Jenn

http://news.ufl.edu/2005/09/08/feline-aids/

UF scientist finds unexpected link between cat and human AIDS viruses
Filed under Research, Health on Thursday, September 8, 2005.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A University of Florida researcher has discovered an
unexpected link between the viruses that cause feline and human AIDS: Cats
vaccinated with an experimental strain of the human AIDS virus appear to be at
least as well-protected against the feline version of the disease as those
immunized with the vaccine currently used by veterinarians.
The surprise finding may mean cats with feline immunodeficiency
virus, also known as FIV or feline AIDS, could eventually be treated even more
effectively using some form of the experimental human vaccine. Researcher Janet
Yamamoto, a professor at UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine, also theorizes
that these emerging relationships between the two viruses could one day lead to
a vaccine for human AIDS.
Results from Yamamoto’s research can be previewed in today’s
online issue of the journal AIDS.
FIV is a natural infection of domestic cats that results in an
immunodeficiency syndrome resembling HIV infection in humans. Since its
discovery in 1987, FIV infection of cats has been used in vaccine studies as a
small-animal model of human AIDS.
“We were the first to demonstrate that you can make an effective
vaccine against a virus in the AIDS family of viruses,” said Yamamoto, a
co-discoverer of FIV.
Yamamoto holds the patent on the only approved vaccine available
through veterinarians to protect cats against FIV. Her most recent studies have
attempted to improve the efficacy of that vaccine by using strains of FIV found
in cats in which the disease had not progressed for some reason over several
years.
To determine the extent to which the human and feline AIDS
viruses react to each other, and any implications that might exist for vaccine
efficacy, Yamamoto began experimenting with long-term, nonprogressive strains of
FIV that led to the current commercial vaccine. Now she is working on an HIV
vaccine consisting of HIV virus from long-term, nonprogressing individuals.
“We purposely made vaccines with strains that weren’t virile,”
Yamamoto said. “We found that whenever we tried using less virulent strains of
virus, we were able to make a better vaccine.”
Yamamoto’s team was also surprised to discover that a core
protein found in HIV also effectively protects cats against FIV.
“So what does this mean to human AIDS research? The viruses HIV
and FIV are from the same viral family,” Yamamoto said. “For that reason, the
amino acids that make up the proteins in both viruses share some common regions.
There appear to be regions of HIV, or variations of the core protein we used in
our studies, that may provide protection in vaccine form against HIV.”
Some compounds made from separate virus strains have been
successfully used in vaccines against viruses from the same subfamily, such as
smallpox in humans, which is made from cowpox virus, and human measles vaccines
for canine distemper in puppies.
“Therefore, protective vaccines based on cross-reactive regions
of AIDS viruses can provide broad immunity, and may be useful against viruses
that are currently evolving in a new host, such as HIV infection of humans,”
Yamamoto said.
Alan L. Landay, a professor of immunology and
microbiology and associate department chairman at Rush University Medical Center
in Chicago, called Yamamoto’s findings “very exciting.”
“This raises a potential whole new area for research in the field
of vaccines that with the current approaches haven’t yielded any success to
date,” said Landay, whose research team is working to develop novel immune
strategies to treat HIV infection. “We need to explore all the potential options
available to us for developing an HIV vaccine.”

Sorry if there are typos but I am crying some tears of small joy this
morning.

Just off of the phone with the vet and they finally followed what I
insisted they do and treat
Gigi for snake bite. She has had major goof balls of antibiotics,
injections and drains put into her leg.

This morning there is a tiny bit of movement in her foot although very
swollen still, her other leg has not progressed and shows some signs of
improvement. The puncture wound to her neck is closing up.

Please keep those positive prayers and good thoughts coming her way, it
seems to be helping.

She has a long way to go but at least now there is hope

cat

I know this may not be the right thing to post on some lists but I am
asking everyone to say a prayer for our little rescue cat Gigi. She is
going to have to have a leg amputated and now her other front leg is having a
problem also.

The vets seem to think she may have been bitten by a snake (we found one
dead in the yard) or even an insect. She had a swollen foot and even
though she was placed on antibiotics it grew and grew. They drained it and
smothered it in antibiotic creams and she was on oral antibiotics.

Yesterday she took a turn for the worse. I did not sleep all night
for worrying about her.
Just spoke with the vet and the foot with the lesser infection seems to be
holding steady.
They cannot amputate the bad leg because she is running a fever.

PLEASE say a prayer light a candle ask for a special prayer for her.
She is a rescued cat who we took in with her babies and we love her
dearly.

Thanks
Joyce

(OT) need help with skin issue on cat

2005-08-13 Thread Jenn

I know this is Off topic for a few of the lists I
sent it to, but to be honest, I have never HAD this cat tested for FELV or FIV,
so he COULD have either, or both. Mythic has skin problems. He's gone in for
tests, and he does NOT have fungus, bacteria, bugs, or anything that could be
found via culture and scraping. I gave him a medicated bath yesterday, and just
now, I noticed his skin on his belly is very odd. He has little red blotches all
around his belly, not PINK, but you can see that it is little blood vessels all
broken in groups under the surface of his skin. I can't take him to the vet
until Thursday. Has ANYONE ever seen anything like this before? Does anyone have
a clue what it might be. He has always itched really bad, and has been covered
with little scabs, and bigger areas that one might consider a "hot spot". This
NEW eruption of little bloody spots is REALLY concerning to me. He will NOT let
me touch it, I think it might be painful, or at least a bit raw to the touch.
There is no BLEEDING, it's all under the skin, looks a bit like a grouping of
varicose veins in humans, expect in small 1/4 inch diameter blotches. Anybody
got any ideas? I'm going to force a Benadryl tablet down his throat. I have some
Metacam Oral Suspension, it's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, do you
think a dose of that would be wise? Usually he is BETTER for a day after a bath,
today he seems possibly WORSE. I am sure I rinsed him well.

(OT) anybody know anything about PK deficiency in cats? (and calling on NE USA cat lovers)

2005-08-07 Thread Jenn

Anybody know anything about, or ever dealt with
erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency in a cat? It's recessive gene breed
issue in Somali and Abyssinian cats. Is there a yahoo group that deals with
it?

I'm about to get some Abyssinian rescues in, and
just wanted do a bit of research on it before-hand, just in case. Supposedly,
the "cure" for it is surgical removal of the Spleen, from what I have been
reading so far. Anybody ever had that done?

On the same note, is anyone interested in
adopting a Abyssinian or Bengal (or cross between the two) cat in the Vermont/
New Hampshire/ Eastern NY areas (or willing to drive tothe northeastern
USA areato pick one up)? We are seeking adoptive homes for 150 hoarder
situation cats. If enough homes are not found, cats WILL be euthanised. They
need homes by WEDNESDAY. Rescues are welcome to take GROUPS of cats. If you can
help, please contact: Donna at [EMAIL PROTECTED](with the
subject: "VT Aby/Bengal - ADOPT" ) as soon as possible to make arrangements and
be screened. You can tell her Jenn from the UCAT rescue told you about the
situation. This is a quite overwhelming situation, we need your help! PLEASE
only respond if you can be in the northeastern USA area this week, these cats
will NOT be shipped. These cats are rumored to have ringworm, but otherwise are
supposed to be in fairly good health. Some will be purebred registered cats, but
we can not guarantee that you will get their papers with them (these are RESCUE
cats, and MUST be spayed/neutered, not to be used for breeding). The vet that is
rescuing them will spay/neuter, update rabies, and put Frontline onany
that can be done, before releasing them to adopters or rescuers. Pregnant queens
will NOT be aborted, so it is possible that we will need homes for queens
expecting kittens (kittens may or may not be registerable, at this point, I do
not know if papers will be released). If you can take on special needs cats (the
preggo queens, or sick cats, or PK cats, or anything out of the norm) be sure to
mention that in your email to Donna.

Re: new to list - question on kittens and comment re Georgie

2005-08-05 Thread Jenn

Kittens should be tested with the ELISA at intake
(when you first get them),and with repeat tests at 12 weeks (or a month after
they've stopped nursing), again at 6 months old, and then retest every 3 months
until they are a year old. If they come up positive on all of those tests, you
can be pretty darn sure they REALLY do have FELV. You can confirm this by doing
the IFA test when they are 9 months to a year old. That's how I do it anyways,
some people may not have the funds, so testing less frequently may be more
logical in that case (12 weeks, 6 months, and a year would be fine). All FELV+
cats should be tested in house with the ELISA test at their annual exams,
because it is possible for them to fight off the virus and become negative even
after years of having FELV. For now, I would suggest you begin to treat them
with Interferon, as it will help them fight the virus off, and give them a
better chance of becoming negative after the maternal antibodies wear off. They
also need to be fed a premium diet, either one of the premium commercial cat
foods or home made (we debate on that subject a bit on this list, we have quite
a few members who prepare home made diets, personally, I fee Innova EVO, many
other here feed Wellness and other types of premium commercial feeds).
Definitely remove them from their mother ASAP, though at the age you say they
are, I'm sure you've already done that. I don't know your policy on releasing
FELV+ ferals, some caretakers do, some don't. If you don't, and need help
placing her (the mother who looked rough), we can post her in a few places
online, to try to find her a home.

The next logical step would be to find them all
foster homes where they can grow up and see if they will throw off the virus, or
become carriers. You really wont know with any certainty if they really are
positive until they are full grown. Any that test negative, should be confirmed
negative on IFA, and retested two weeks to a month later to be SURE they are
still negative (on both types of test). After IFA confirm and retesting, those
should be safe to adopt out as negative kittens (and they wont need the FELV
vaccine, because they've proven they already have natural
immunity).

I'm going to be blunt here, and just outright
tell you that the kittens that continuously test positive will be VERY hard to
adopt out. It's very hard to find people willing to open their hearts to such a
fragile and temporary little life. Their life spans vary so much, you might be
lucky and get one that lives a normal life span (many of us have been lucky),
but often in kittens born to a positive mother, and that have had FELV from
birth, the life spancan bevery short, from a year to two years. I
think there are many of us on this list who have lost FELV babies at 18 months
of age... it seems to be a "magic number" for these types of kittens. The hard
thing to decide is, do you want to give them a chance to throw the virus off,
knowing that if they don't they will probably be yours forever (I think you
should, and I advocate that you do, but you know your situation better than I
do)? Will your foster homes be willing to keep them for their entire lives if
you can't find homes for them? Will you be in a situation where you will be
attached to them, and have to make the call to euthanise them after they have
lived in your home for a year? These are hard questions you need to consider
now, and it's hard for me to point them out, but you need to know that the
positive cats are very hard to place into adoptive homes.

That poor lady... I feel so bad for her.
Hopefully, he WILL find his way back home. Even never having been outside, most
cats DO somehow know how to find their way back. Make sure she is outside
calling him regularly, cats have great hearing from long distances, he might be
searching for home, and hear her. She also needs to continue to go to every
animal shelter every day until he is found, going once and leaving his
description is NOT good enough. Most city workers do NOT really care enough to
try to memorize each missing cat's description. Make sure she has flyers posted
at EVERY vet's office within 20 miles also. Here's a good website with lots of
info on finding a lost cat: http://www.catsinthebag.org/

poor guy. The only thing that helps is steroid shots, and that's every other

Transport is usually NOT a problem. All of these
yahoogroups help rescue animals get to their new homes, via volunteer transport
drivers. Once you are approved for the adoption, then you can arrange to get the
kitten to you on one or several of these transport lists. Just join them, and
tell them where the kitten is, where you are, and all the info about the kitten,
including it's FELV status, and I'm sure someone will help you out!

Poor Bramble! He has such bad luck! No
newideas here, just wanted to offer some support and good wishes to you
and Bramble. Personally, I would force-feed if it is more than 2 days without
food. Try and see if he will lick a bit of honey off your finger, that makes my
throat feel better sometimes, and it will get a little sugar in his system, so
he wont crash from low blood sugar. I've had cats survive on very little force
fed Nutri-Cal gel. If you have to force feed, and it hurts him, get some of the
most potent stuff you can, so you can do as little as possible, and get as much
nutrition in him as you can.

Re: Bramble can't eat - ideas please

2005-08-02 Thread Jenn

The reason why you don't give it to human babies
isbecause honey has been known to contain Botulismspores. Human
babies are notorously unhealthy little fragile things. Most cats shouldn't
beeffected in any way, even if they do get a dab of contaminated honey. In
fact, I can quote the ONLYcase ever known of wherea cat
contractedBotulism from eating anything: http://jcm.asm.org/cgi/content/full/42/11/5406
No cases of cats contracting it via honey have
everbeen reported. Here's a clip from another webpage on the
subject:

  Botulism: Botulism is caused by Clostridium botulinum. Animals get it from
  ingesting preformed toxin in contaminated food. Honey is a major source of
  botulism toxin. There have been no natural cases reported in the
  cat. Most dogs are relatively resistant, however it is seen in the
  dog. Dogs with botulism become progressively weaker and weaker until they are
  unable to stand. They have decreased jaw tone (so the jaw drops), salivate
  excessively, and have a weak bark. The disease can be diagnosed by finding
  toxin in blood, feces or organs. Therapy consists of antitoxin and supportive
  care. Fortunately, dogs can recover. Botulism toxin can be inactivated by
  heating food to high temperatures (80 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes or 100
  degrees Celcius for 10 minutes.) Also, prevent your pet from eating carcasses.

That being said, Anything thick and able to coat
the throat will help though. Karo is probably safer. Here are some websites that
sayhoney is safe, and even recommended for pets:
http://www.pets4life.com/index.php?p=research/articles/13
http://www.purelypets.com/articles/epilepsyarticle.htm
http://www.homemade4life.com/faqs.html

JennAdopt a FIV+ cat:http://jenn.rescuegroup.org/FELV/FIV/

~~~Nutrical
is probably the best choice, since it's made for cats. I hadn't heard
about giving cats honey, I know there's a reason you're not suppose to give
it to human babies, can't remember why though. I think it would be
safer to give white Karo corn syrup. That's one of the ingredients in
the homemade kitten formula I use, so I know it's safe. Just a little
might sooth and energize Bramble enough to want to eat. Prayers for
Bramble,Nina
Just the messenger, sorry if it's already been
posted. They took in animals after owner's deaths, plus FELV+ and FIV+ cats for
Okay, now that the warrant's been served and the
facility thatwas seizedupon was Wild Cat Ranch (www.wildcatranch.net) - it
wasbasically a "retirement" facility. When people can't continue tocare
for their cats, they send them to this place and pay a stipendfor the cat's
care. They also take in FeLV and FIV kitties and havea feralcolony. From
what I was told, there have been allegationsof abuse/neglect for years - the
SPCA of Texas would go down,investigate, give warnings, the facility would
clean up it's act fora while.Apparently there's one "model" cat building
that peopleare shown - but that's not where most of the cats reside. Most
ofthe cats are living in corrugated metal sheds with dirt floors.From
what I was told, terrible living conditions. What finallysparked the seizure
- the IRS was investigating the money aspect ofthe operation for fraud.
People's cats would die, they would not beinformed ofthe death, and the
facility would continue to takepayments from the owners. All of the cats
have been moved to theWild Animal Orphanage temporarily - until placement
can be found. Ihave noidea what they are going to do with the feral and
kindofhomes/rescue will be needed for the cats! Feel free
Re: Need advice: Catching female cat between kittens
2005-07-07 Thread Jenn
I hate to sound condescending, but... If keeping
her inside isn't an option, then whatdo youexpect? Let me get this
right, she's an outdoor, unspayed female, running with free access to a number
of toms? And you don't want her to get preggo but you don't want to keep her
inside either? Just be responsible, and keep her inside, in a CAGE if you have
to! You think she's miserable? How about all of her offspring, and THEIR
offspring? I assume you did not have all of her kittens spayed or neutered
before adopting them out? Believe me, making ONE cat miserable in a cage for a
few months is WELL worth the trade off of not creating a thousand disposable
lives accidentally, generation after generation of kittens who might be
unwanted, left to starve or freeze, or fall into the hands of cruel people, to
be abused, or left to fend for themselves, running from dogs, and creating feral
cat colonies, which uncaring humans put out poison for, and die horrible deaths.
All because you couldn't let one female cat suffer in a cage for a few months.
The responsible thing is to cage her until she can be spayed, it's better for
her, it's better for everyone that way. And please, make sure all of the kittens
you adopt out go to people who PROMISE to get them spayed or neutered, and get
their phone numbers, and check up on them in 6 months, and make sure they all
have been!
  It's been a painfulday. I lost my gentle giant Snowball this
  afternoon. I never expected that.
  He was breathing rapidly when I got home from the clinic. I thought at
  first he was stressed because of losing his girlfriend Flavia. I couldn't take
  the risk, tho, so I rushed him to the clinic. His lungs were full of fluid.
  Only 25 per cent was not full and even that was compromised. I discussed it
  with the same vet I saw this morning. I couldn't risk him dying while I was
  gone, and that seemed a very real possibility.
  Snowball was the biggest cat, a flamepoint, but he wouldn't hurt a soul.
  He was terribly timid. He stopped playing a couple of months ago, butI
  thought it was a lazy phase, because he had been pretty lazy before.
  The other little ones would enjoy batting him when he was below them on
  the tree. He never batted them back. he was too gentle. He knew he could
  squash them if he wanted too, but he didn't want to hurt them.
  I'm in shock for Snowball, and I guess Flavia, tho she has been so ill,
  and I need to process it.
  Please send prayers for my remaining Mickey and Momcat. They are going to
  be feeling very down and scared, and I'm scared they'll stop eating.
  I haven't read your replies yet because I just got back, and I have to
  leave in 30 mins, and I haven't finished packing.
  But there were lots--I'm so grateful. I'll read them when I get back.
  love and hugs to all
  Kerry
Re: Need advice: Catching female cat between kittens
2005-07-07 Thread Jenn
I did not see where it said she got them all
spayed/neutered, only that she got them their shots. Possibly I am wrong. Still
the facts remain. I hope I did not put her off from trying to help too, I was
simply attempting to get her to realize how ridiculous hernot being
willingto cage the cat was. I admit, I'm NOT a people person, ignorance
annoys me to no end. Maybe I was too blunt, but at least she realizes how
serious the situation is, hopefully. If she writes me back all offended, I'll
apologize and tell her the fact that she is trying at all has to count for
something, and try to be a bit more morally supporting while gently attempting
to persuade her to see things realistically.
~~~,
Your reply contain common sense but the person did provide for the first
litter;I do hope the tone it won't put her off caring properly for the
mother and her kittens to be. The post came from a list that is primarily
about dogs, so she may not know as much about cats and was afraid to
cage the mom.Bonnie in WI

Bones... please help her!

2005-05-29 Thread Jenn

Hi everyone. Some of you may, or may not know
about my newest rescue cat, Bones. She was almost dead when some local kids
brought her to me last Wednesday night. I have nursed her out of severe
hypothermia and starvation, but I am fairly sure she has a broken back (she
still needs x-rays, and has an appointment on Wednesday). She is going to need
surgery to stabilize the bones in her back, to ever get to have any normal
quality of life, and be free of the pain she is in (she is in extreme pain if
she moves at all now, it has gotten worse today than it was). I will be calling
around tomorrow to area vets to get an estimate of the costs, and I will
probably need help. If anyone can donate any amount to help Bones get her
surgery, we would be very grateful. I will be setting up a special fund,
andas soon as I know which vet I will be using, I will post the info. If
any of you know (or are) a vet within a 100 mile radius of Vermont who would be
willing to do Bone's surgery nowand take payments, please let me know!

In addition, we would also be very grateful for
any prayers and positive energy you could send our way right now. I lost my
beloved Do-Dah to a broken spine in 1998, and this is very hard for me, but I
refuse to let Bones die from injuries that could be fixed if only we had money.
I will be working many hours and doing everything I can to get her into surgery
as quickly as possible. The sooner she gets her spine stabilized, the better
chance she will have of ever being able to walk again (she could walk yesterday,
today she can barely stand). Of course, even if she needs a wheelchair, I will
still be keeping her and doing everything I can tohelp her have as good of
a quality of life as I possibly can. This is my shot at redemption, I believe,
because I could not help Do-Dah when he has this same injury. Please keep us in
your thoughts, if you can, we need all the help we can get.

Bones is a very tiny snowshoe girl, she is a seal
point with ice blue eyes, a big meow, and a loud and grateful purr. I named her
Bones because she was, literally, so thin you could see every bone in her body
when she first arrived (yes, only 3 days of nursing have made a huge difference
already!). Please send her any positive energy you can spare! She has such a big
heart, for such a poor little thing!
