Thanks, Chris, it has been 3 yrs. since I have participated in this treatment
for dogs.

I just wish that every time I turn around there wasn't something else for me to
worry about when it comes to my cats.

Actually, following the Katrina debaucle, American Heartworm Association
revised protocol. Now its 1 shot; wait a month; then 2 shots one day apart.
Also protocol recommends treating with HW Prev meds PRIOR to shots in order to
kill off larvae and make adult HW sterile. Finally, there is a parasite that
lives inside the HW that it is now recommended be killed by doxyciclin
injections prior to full HW treatment. These are nasty creatures.

Problem is that they don’t really have a viable treatment for cats yet.

Susan, Thank you! I had treated a dog once for
heartworms and until this discussion being opened up
regarding heartworms in cats, had just assumed it
would be about the same thing. I do not like giving my
cats chemicals, each month, unless I might actually
see a flea, for example. I was surprised to discover a
cat cannot be treated for heartworms once infected by
disease, the same as a dog. I did know cat's
resistance was better and had always counted on
that... I guess now, heartworms is becoming another
thing we need to be worrying about for our cats...I'll
be sharing this info. with friends... I do know
heartworm disease in becoming more prevalent every
year in the United States. The dog I dealt with was a
dog I had rescued in Hawaii. He had a bad case. I had
him treated and he became negative. I thought it would
be the same for cats... In Hawaii, because the
incidence of heartworms is so high, I did keep my dog
on preventatives...I would do the same here, for dogs,
on the mainland now, as it is getting so common... I
will now be considering it for my cats next
summer...Thanks, Glenda

Hi Susan

Great link. I always thought that this is what Tiny died from. I did not
have a necropsy done. My poor cat was dead. I even asked a vet the summer
before he died if it was possible he has heartworm. She did not test and
gave him a Revolution treatment like that would take care of his existing
problem. The episode he had that made me take him in was similar to the
episode he had when he died. It was a severe spastic cough that literally
caused him to fall over. Only the second time it happened he turned blue and
that was it. I miss my Tiny. He wound up as one of my FeLV positive cats but
never had the symptoms that Junior did.

The mosquitoes have not been bad this year, but I live on a lake and there
have been years they were terrible. We have also had West Nile here in Va as
well.

Hi,

The reason I suspected heartworm is because he had a transient cough most of
his short life. I knew cats could get heartworm and I always worried about
this. She mainly used the revolution because of his ear mites. I am always
battling these here. She may well be the vet that told me it might be time
to pts Junior. I am glad I did not listen. He is a fighter. I knew one
tretment would not do anything even if he had heart worms. This is the URI
that I think was the beginning of my FELV infection with my cats. It seems
to have started at this time.

I know w/ dogs, you NEVER give them a preventative treatment UNLESS they
have been tested, because it could kill them.

Re: heartworm info

2007-08-27 Thread Susan Dubose
I know w/dogs, it's a series of 2 painful shots on either side of their heart,
and bedrest for 6 weeks afterwards.

Very important about the bedrest..

When we received heartworm pos. dogs in the shelter where i worked, they didn't
want to treat them until they were in a home environment, because the kennel
stress was too much.

Or, we would try to find them a foster home for their treatment.
