Tiny one year ago
I posted this to the Angels on My Shoulder group, but I will share my feelings here too It was one year ago that my precious Tiny went on to the Rainbows Bridge. Everyone deals with Grief differently. I lost four cats that year including Tiny. I was not expecting my Tiny to leave me so soon. He was a little over 5 years old. A neighbor's child brought him to me as a kitten saying her parents were going to get rid of it. She said a cat had kittens under their porch. I did not really believe the story but I took the tiny kitty and gave him a home. He looked to me not even old enough to be separated from his mom. He would later develop a habit of making biscuits in my hair. He did this all his short life. He also would sleep on my head. Purring loudly. I mean literally on my head or he would use it as a pillow. All his life he had an occasional cough. I worried that it was asthma or heart worms. I will never know. The spells were short lived and then he seemed fine. Summer of 2006 he had a vicious coughing spell that literally knocked him off his feet. He also had a cold. I took him to the vet. He was given antibiotics and got better. Several of my other cats got sick too. All with cold like symptoms. Junior his half brother, same mom she was feral, had been hit by a car that spring and stayed inside recuperating. He too got sick and had anemia on top of the cold. Long story short I wound up losing Pumpkin who was hiding symptoms from me and not eating. He was anemic and jaundiced when taken to the vet. Two day later I had to take him back and he stayed on IV for two days. Seemed better the second night there he crashed. He was a shell of himself and I had him PTS. I took Junior back to his vet to make sure he was ok because he had similar symptoms. He had a fever of 106.5 so they kept him. The vet called later wanted to do a feline leukemia test and it was positive. Turned out Tiny was positive too. Junior already had classic symptoms. Tiny was over his cold and never showed symptoms. I also had another positive cat who was PTS as he was also positive for FELV and FIV. He had also been sick. I would have probably done that differently had I known what I know now. The rest of my cats were ok and vaccinated. Tiny had been a little under the weather, but nothing earth shattering or I would have had him checked out. Christmas day it rained all day. Tiny seems a little distressed, but then again not anything that would indicate what would happen. I watched TV with him and I got up to check my emails. I heard that same violent cough as the summer before. I rushed to the living room. to move him. I though he would vomit. His gums were already turning blue. I gabbed the oxygen tank and it was empty. I went to get the concentrator which is my husbands. Checked on him we are talking less than a minute. His breathing calmed down and he was gone. I am told that it was probably a blood clot he threw and that he did not feel anything after the initial cough. I still wonder if there was something I missed in his short life that could have saved him. I buried him in the rain crying the whole time. It would seem his grave is probably a tad on the lot next to me. Junior still survives. I constantly worry about him. He currently has a URI that he can't seem to shake. Feline leukemia is a horrible disease. Thanks everyone for your comforting words when my Tiny Whiney left me. Thanks Kelley This year has been better. Junior has made it past the one year point, and though he is not perfectly healthy, he is hanging in there. I need to get him back on his Transfer factor. I think it helps him. Also I am thinking of going to the big guns for his URI, azithromycin. Last time we saw the vet she was on board for this as the next step. The Clindamycon knocked out his gingivitis but the URI remains and he now has a cough. Yes - I don't have an FELV+ cat but I do have an immune compromised cat (heart disease) and azithromycin clears up her URIs when nothing else does. I hope it will help Junior. I will probably call the Vet tomorrow. She is real good about Junior's condition. I do not have to take him in all the time. I am guessing she will have to write script for it am I right? Re: Tiny one year ago
There has been a long time curse if you want to call it that, which follows a new arrival. It seems that a short time after the arrival I would lose a cat. Now it dosen't always happen. My neighbors must think I rescue cats, because this fall 3 were left at my house, 2 in a box on Thanksgiving Day. One was given to me by a lady who was told I did rescue. Well not officially but maybe unofficially. I have kept 2 of these kitties. Pewter was spayed Friday and she is doing great. High jumps and running around with he companion JJ. All my cats got their booster for FELV. The vet agreed on the 3 year protocol for distemper. My wallet is much smaller now. Thanks Kelley for the information on the Zithromax. Sally, I'm so sorry for your loss of Tiny. It doesn't sound like there was anything you can do. I think these sudden deaths are soo hard to deal with. My sympathies and prayers to you. tonya Sally [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am so sorry to tell everyone that Tiny just passed over. He had a seemingly benign URI. Not really showing symptoms of being in distress. He seemed worse today, but not life threatening. Five minutes ago he started choking I tried to hold him nothing would help. He was turning blue. This message was sent before. I never saw it posted. I would like any feedback or thoughts about my kitties. Comcast came into the neighborhood and fixed whatever the problem was with the connection here. I was barely about to get a couple of emails out. For the past couple days I have cried, and reflected on my time with Tiny. Tiny was definitely my cat or more realistically I was his human. He chose me and that was very special. I am so glad he came to live with me. I will always wonder if I did this or that would the outcome have been different. Probably not and besides I cannot change what has happened. I now have to focus on Junior. I spoke to Beth at work today. SHe used to be a vet's tech. Her cat was diagnosed FIV. Well she was prepared to euthanize the cat. He was elderly however the vet knowing she did not want to do this tried an experimental procedure. I never could find out what it was other than it was interferon. Today her husband stopped by and described the procedure. It was low dose oral administration of interferon. She said the cat became almost kitten-like and asymptomatic. The cat later developed oral cancer and was put down, he was 18 years old. Now that I have this information, I will have my vet Dr Staunton call her vet Dr Elam to get the information. I already gave Dr Staunton the Italian study paper to read. I was told she took it home that day to read. Dr Elam used to be my family's vet for many years. I cannot afford him these days as he is the highest priced vet in town. It is funny, because he started out as a farm animal vet and was very reasonable. I still see him occasionally in the grocery store. I am thankful I was able to spend time with Tiny during his last hour here on earth. When I lost my Fluff Last February, I was able to spend time with him because I had a few days of vacation I had to use up. I knew Fluffy was declining and I was so lucky then to have spent his last week on earth with him. I did not know at the time that would be the end for him. He was the alpha cat and he trained all my cats on proper cat behavior. Although Ittle Bitty was Tiny's best friend and he trained Tiny in the art of lick and bite. Fluffy had trained Ittle Bitty.and so it goes. Just an observation. I have heard that older cats most likely have some immunity to FeLV. I also have read vaccines are most likely effective longer than stated. he is what I know about my cats. Spike age 10 tested negative - likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Speedy age 8 tested negative- likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Ittle Bitty age 7 tested negative -likely to have been vaccinated once for FELV and other diseases Little Black - age 5 she is not social at all with the other cats she is strictly outside and eats on her own. Grey and white- age 4 same mom as Junior, from a different litter.. also had less interaction with the sick cats this summer the exposure was less. Junior - age 4 hit by a car in April caught Tiny' URI in June, a mild case in August he became anemic and was treated. FELV positive received immuno-regulin. Has had uveitis and URI since testing positive. Lily - age 1and a half. Stayed outside much of the time she is social but during the URI outbreak was mostly outside Daisy- age 8 weeks at the time of the outbreak and age 4 months when tested negative, She was very social with a all the cats stayed inside during the outbreak. She is still healthy and has never been sick during all this. She was Lionel best friend. They played together and mutual grooming. All the inside cats ate from a mutual feeding station. Lionel deceased.age unknown- also got Tiny's URI and had a bad cough. He tested positive for FIV which I am guessing he had when he was adopted last March. No fighting with him so I am not worried about FIV in the other cats. I assume he caught FelV from one of the other cats. He became a strictly inside cat when he came to live with us. He has a broken leg that had healed without surgery. I feel good that he lived his remaining time like a King after a very rough start to life. Pumpkin- age 8 months he also caught Tiny's URI , but only a mild case.not tested developed anemia weight loss and was jaundiced.died at the vet's office after crashing,he was euthanized. Most likely was FeLV Tiny age 5 years. Got a bad URI and went to the vet in May later diagnosed FeLV positive ,died of respiratory arrest. Appeared to be asymptomatic up until the last week and even then did not appear to be serious Silver showed up on my doorstep the very day I started vaccinating all the negative cats, He was very emaciated but tested negative and joined the group. He is an inside cat. I don't know does any of this make sense? This is very brief.. I know all the positive cats actually spent more time inside than outside during the URI outbreak. Because Tiny really had it bad I kept him inside
Re: Tiny
Sally, there's no specific question in your post to be answered, that's why I didn't reply to it the first time it was posted (there's actually not a single question mark in the entire post). What is it you are specifically wanting to know or get feedback on? I'll take a stab at it anyways: I'm glad comcast fixed your internet problems. Yes, cats do choose us, certainly much more than we choose them. I do think that focusing on Junior should be a priority, but don't forget to watch everybody. It's easy to get tunnel-vision and focus on the ONE cat we think is weaker one, and miss something in another cat because we narrowed our focus. The low-dose interferon they use for FIV is the same treatment as is used for FELV, and that's posted on our main website at http://felineleukemia.org on the treatments page. I'm sorry you can't afford your old vet anymore, perhaps pointing out that fact would be beneficial to both of you; you may get a discount as an original client, and he might feel humbled enough to realize that he's alienating his old clients by his new found glory. My FELV+ cat was constantly groomed by another of my cats, and he NEVER caught the FELV from her, so just because they lick and bite each other doesn't mean they will contaminate each other with FELV. As far as your cats' previous felv vaccinations, health, and history goes, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have them all tested again, that way you could treat the felv and/or fiv positive ones with Interferon and keep an extra-close eye on them. I do think you should be treating the FELV+ ones that you already know about, if you aren't already. I'm sure Daisy just happens to have a really good immune system, and is healthy. I don't think it's a mystery, she's just been lucky and blessed with a good immune system. You can boost the other's immune systems by feeding good quality food, and supplementing with vitamin C and a good general multi-vitamin/mineral supplement (and giving Interferon to the FELV+ ones). Oh, and I'm sorry for your loss of Lionel and Pumpkin too! Is that kinda what you were looking for? RE: Tiny passed
HI Michelle, You could be right. I went to the archives and I see your name a lot regarding lymphomas. I have one more FELV pos cat. The thing with Tiny is that he did not have any symptoms that alarmed me. I know the vet had examined both cats a few weeks before this. Junior had a URI at that time and had had it for two weeks. He also had uveitis. Tiny other than the URI he had last summer had not appeared sick at all. He was vaccinated at that time. I observed no ill effects for that either. Both cats have been on immunoregulin. My question is what am I looking for??? I have a picture of Tiny taken a few days before he died. He does appear to have aged. He was still eating and had normal bowel movements. He also still played up until the final day. Was he just protecting me from his pain? I am asking you for your experiences with lymphoma. Someone also suggested Tiny had lived a long time. Oh course he was only tested recently. I can tell you he did have coughing spells all his life. I assumed allergies or later though it may be asthma. They always passed quick so there was never a reason to get him looked at for that. His URI this summer had him coughing so hard he would fall over. He did that also the day he died. The antibiotics did clear up his summer URI. He was no tested until I lost Pumpkin a couple month later. That was when junior was not doing well he had been to the vet and found anemic. I took him back after losing Pumpkin and they tested him then because of anemia and high fever. I would have never known Tiny was positive had this not happened. I would have just wondered why he died. Also Tiny's test was a weak positive, so I really was hoping he would turn it around. Do you think he was positive for a lot longer than I knew? I am sorry for too many questions. I just don't want to make any mistakes that will hurt my kitties in the future. Sally, you and yours have been through a lot. I am sorry for it. But glad you are blessed with all of them, and them with you. Michelle

Grey and white- age 4 same mom as Junior, from a different litter.. also had less interaction with the sick cats this summer the exposure was less. Junior - age 4 hit by a car in April caught Tiny' URI in June, a mild case in August he became anemic and was treated. Because Tiny really had it bad I kept him inside for two weeks. He was mostly and outside cat. Junior was already stressed from his accident and had become and inside cat for his protection. Lionel apparently was immuno-compromised, .Pumpkin

Long post..Tiny and Junior's stories
Tiny and Junior As I get older my memory gets a bit fuzzy. This is Tiny's and Junior's story. Summer of 2001 my doorbell rang. This was not a usual occurrence. I opened the door and there was a neighbor's child holding this tiny precious buff colored kitten. She told me it was born under her porch and her parents were threatening to get rid of it. OK she already knew I had cats probably 4 or 5 at that time. So Tiny joined my crew. He was about 5 or 6 weeks old. Not even weaned. I thought her story about a mother cat just having kittens under their deck sounded fishy. Actually it was true. I was to wind up with 2 more kittens from this semi wild mom. Tiny (whiny) was always a bit small for a male cat. He weighed 10 pounds in adulthood. He was smaller than my other male cats. I had him neutered and he became part of my cat family. He had this thing of making biscuits in my hair. He also slept on my head. Literally he used me as a pillow. As he grew older he came to love the outdoors and spent more time outside than inside. He loved to hunt and would eat what he caught. Junior came to us the following year. He is Tiny's half brother. By now the people have moved away and the house was vacant. I also have their half sister from another litter that same year. I found homes for Junior's siblings and kept a female kitten named her Misty. She later was hit by a car. She came to me in spirit the day after she was killed to say she was sorry. That was very strange, but very real. For the most part all was well with my cat family. Oh sure they would get the occasional upper respiratory. Tiny seemed to always have on and off have a cough. Nothing too severe. I later thought he may have had asthma.maybe not. Fluffy was the king of this family and I so miss him. I lost him last February to osteo-sarcoma. We are now in the year 2006. A week later I found an older cat on Petfinder in a shelter not far from here. My husband went and got this big old tomcat his name was Lionel. He sprayed the house as soon as we got him home. He was injured in a fight with a raccoon and the wound took forever to heal. The same day we got Lionel a coworker gave me another yellow longhaired kitten named Pumpkin. In April Junior was hit by a car. I found him hiding on my back deck, He had a split pallet and a broken jaw. He was tested for FeLV at that time and was negative. Hr spent a week at the hospital and came home still not eating much. I took him back for hydration the following Monday. My husband Eric for some reason found another kitten at the same shelter and brought her home this is Daisy, She was about 8 weeks old. You can never have too many cats. The time line here may not be quite accurate, but I think the respiratory infections started in May with Tiny. He coughed so hard he would knock himself off his feet. I took him to the vet and got antibiotics. Then Lionel got sick. Also coughing a lot and somewhat violently. Just as one cat was getting better another was getting sick. It was Junior's turn then Pumpkin's turn. These 4 cats got sick the other 7 cats did not get sick. I later took Junior back to the vet because he was not feeling well. He was anemic and was treated for hemabartenella. Then Pumpkin started acting lethargic. Too many cats sick. I did not realize Pumpkin wasn't really eating, just pretending to eat. By the time Pumpkin was taken in to my old vet he was anemic and jaundiced. He was sent home with antibiotics, but taken back after the weekend. He was put on IV and baytril He had seizures and was not responsive I had him euthanized. I am dealing with two veterinarians, because my regular vet was not available when Junior was hot by the car. OK I now know something is wrong. So I take Junior back to his vet. He was running a temp of 106.5. he did not even look sick! They kept him for the day. He was still anemic and they wanted to test him for FeLV. I knew then what the answer might be. After he tested positive for FeLV. I had to get all the cats tested and vaccinated. This whole thing was a nightmare. Lionel was in the first group and was positive for Felv and FIV. I suspect he had the FIV when I adopted him and caught FeLV later. I had him euthanized as he was not doing well. Tiny was in the next group tested. He too was positive. He and Junior were isolated together. They do not like each other so this was interesting. Tiny seemed to be the healthier of the two. No symptoms after the initial URI. They both went on immunoregulin. Junior got another URI and uveitis. I hope for the best. Junior finally got better from his URI. Now Tiny had a slight respiratory infection, but still playful and was eating up until his last day. Christmas day, I spent doing nothing. I decided Tiny was not feeling well so we sat on the sofa and I changed channels on the TV. He normally doesn't sit with me but I saw something in his eyes. I now know he was saying goodbye. I stayed
Re: Long post..Tiny and Junior's stories
It feels better to tell their stories doesn't it? Your story was nice, and it sounds like you've opened your heart to compassion often over the years. Tiny had a good life with you, surrounded with love. You did everything right, and you shouldn't have any remorse. I do hope time brings you peace. In time your broken heart will ache less, and only a small tear will well up in the corner of your eye as you recall all of the GOOD times with Tiny. Time doesn't really heal, like so many people say, but it does ease the intense pain one feels so close to a loss. There's a whole process to grieving, there's the intense pain and suffering, then time smoothes it over eventually, and there's guilt, because you feel bad that you're NOT still in such intense pain, because you think you should be; then there's acceptance, where you realize that it's ok to let go of the suffering, and instead recall the memories. But they are always with you, forever, and of course, that's the way we want it. I'm sorry for your loss Sally. RE: Tiny passed
I was so hoping Tiny would have lasted longer. I was talking to one of the vet tech's at from the first vet who saw my cats. She said she of course was not in the position to make a diagnosis but said form what I described it sounded like he threw a blood clot. All I know is that it was quick. Thank goodness, I had spent time with him today. He had spent the previous hour lying next to me. No obvious respiratory distress at that time. I had just left his side to send few emails. I had been thinking of Bandy and praying that no kitties would die today. I always suspected he had asthma. All I know is he was coughing and started turning blue almost immediately, his eyes were dilated and fixed. I knew it was not good. We have an oxygen tank here for Eric, but it was empty and I looked to the backup. When I got back to him less than a minute he was gone. I buried him in the dark and rain. I will have to go out tomorrow and do a better job. I could not really see and I was crying hysterically. I have not talked much about Tiny, because he was the one I thought could turn it around. He was still playful up until yesterday. He enjoyed life so much. Now there is Junior left. We shall see. Thanks for your support. Tiny
Hi Maybe I spoke too soon. When I brought Tiny in after he tested + for FelV I knew he had a bite wound, from what I assumed was a scuffle with a cat. I have cleaned it and kept an eye on it. It was healing pretty nicely. After I sent the last post I noticed what looked like blood on his other cheek. Well it appears he must have been bitten more than once. There are three tiny holes and a bloody fluid is coming out of it. I cleaned it with peroxide. Does this sound like a cat bite? it looks a little odd to me. Also I read somewhere, can't remember where that I could give the cats pediatric vitamins, I bought Poly Vi Sol with iron, but I am not sure the dosage. I can't seem to find where I read this. Does anyone know? Thanks Sally -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.5/482 - Release Date: 10/18/2006
Re: Tiny
Sally, You need to make sure that Tiny does not have septicemia. It is treated with antibiotics. Especially after dog bites, kitties are given antibiotics because of the risk of infection; dogs mouths are pretty filthy according to my vet, but kitties can get it even from cat bites. If you haven't taken Tiny to the vet for the bite wounds, you might want to reconsider getting him on antibiotics. My best friend's kitty died from untreated septicemia (she had gotten out, disappeared, and showed back up the day she died, about a week later; it was too late to treat her, sadly). :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!?
