It looks like Flash is trying to connect to airdownload.adobe.com and
is displaying something that looks like badge.swf (even though that
file isn't present). Might this be something to do with the new AIR
install features (since it's fine under 10.4)?

I totally agree,
We used remoting for SNL as well. I forget the exact benchmarks we came up
with, but it was honestly about 10 times faster when using remoting.
We were moving gigantic amounts of data in some cases though, and that is
where you really see the difference.
