The XP Components documentation is mostly autogenerated (from code) with
AS2DOC and while it describes the classes' methods and properties fairly
well, IT HAS VIRTUALLY NO CODE EXAMPLES! That annoys heck out of me; just
*one* simple this-is-how-you-instantiate-XP-Component-from-custom-class
example would have made my day (or, two weeks, rather). Instead all examples
use their xp.system.Application.Run() mehtod. Perhaps this means that's the
only way to use them, but why?

They're in Hong Kong, I think.

Quickly, tho, I'm feeling the same way:
 There seems to be a lack of good component

You're probably going to write from scratch either way, it wont be a
'port'.
You can look at the source code to the C# for ideas on how to do things,
but
the architechure is different enough that you aren't really going to be
able
to reuse anything.

Most types of drawing are pretty easy to do in Flash, and the user
experience tends to be better as well -- (more people have flash installed
already, no 10 second hang while the JVM loads up, etc etc).

Yes,
they can be used with xp.system.Application.Run() as suggested by the

Components, you may be out of luck (if there is a way to instantiate an XP
Component in a program that doesn't run with xp.system.Application.Run() I

then the program locks up crashing the whole Studio 8).

And what's worse, there is absolutely no communication from the

gone
dormant, the last news item was posted in July of last year.

Even if I had received a short response, "no, it can't be done", it
would've
saved tons of time by me not even attempting to figure it out :-/.

I was left with the component set that I could not use for the project I
purchased it for (they're non-refundable :P).

[Flashcoders] TextInput & text field height

2006-06-21 Thread Ville Walveranta
Hi all,

I am having a problem with Flash 8's TextInput component. I have changed the
typeface to FFF's Progress bold, a bitmap font. It works fine (sharp and
all), except for two issues: 1) letter "W" is not bold even though all other
characters are, and 2) letters with descents such as y or q or g are cropped
so that only a stub of the descent is displayed. Increasing the input
field's vertical size does not help. Apparently it contains a TextField
whose height is not increased. Same thing happens with other bitmap fonts
with descents.

So, the question is: is there any way to change the internal text field
height of the TextInput component, somehow?

Thanks,

Ville

RE: [Flashcoders] RTF text in a field?

2006-06-21 Thread Mike
Possible, yes. Simple, no.

You'd essentially have to build an RTF parser in ActionScript to convert
RTF to (X)HTML. I don't know of any such parsers have been built
already.

Depending on what your back-end is, there may be tools to do the
conversion there instead.

I completely agree - especially when you are doing authentication and
serving content with role-based permissins. Plus if you are doing
simple database work, you can use SSAS with ColdFuion as well.

Thanks to the lessons of my ColdFusion mentor Kevin Aebig, I find
ColdFusion and Remoting much more rewarding for the time I put into

Almost every hosting company has PHP already installed. I mean, if you
don't include the time it takes to get CF set up, then yeah, I guess
they're about even.

CF costs money. PHP is free.

PHP wins, at least for me. Hence, the IMO.

In the little experience I have with data services, receiving XML data
is great, but it's also much slower - more data to transfer, then you
parse.

Right now I am using Flash > to SOAP WSDL (.NET) to receive XML strings
- works good because they are small packets of data, but wouldn't want
to do that for a larger app. Would have the .NET developer write some
methods for me to grab the data directly or use something else.

Re: [Flashcoders] Sample PHP script for handling XML from Flash

2006-06-21 Thread matt stuehler

Jim, Mike,

Many thanks for your responses! I'm going to look into both resources
right away.

Mike - a question about amfphp...

With some of our projects, we build the RIA and host it ourselves,
which means we're responsible for both the front- and back-ends. So, I
could use something like amfphp.

However, with most of our work, we develop an RIA for a client, who
handles the back-end themselves. So, we develop our apps so that they
send and receive XML, which means the client can use whatever they
want in the backend: asp, asp.net, webservices, php, whatever...

Is this a valid position? E.g., if we used amfphp, are we then
limiting our flexibility on the back-end?

Cheers,
Matt

Jorge:

I like using Flash Remoting with ColdFusion components for the following
reasons:

1. Fast development
2. Flexibility: using Remoting and CFCs, you can move a variety of data
types over the pipe
3. Extensibility
4. Maintainability
5. Fast data transfers (can be much more efficient than moving XML)
6. Easily handle authentication and security with ColdFusion (e.g. CFLOGIN)
7. Tight integration between Flash and CF helps to keep things simpler

Flash doesn't actually have abstract classes, but I like to fake it
sometimes by simply making the constructor private. That way you can't
instantiate the class itself (at least from code external to the class),
but have to extend it and instantiate subclasses.

I also like to fake abstract methods by creating methods in the
"abstract" superclass which just throw errors. That way you have to
override them in subclasses before you can use them.

recommend using CSS for applying decoration and effects to the

menu:  http://www.dartfrogmedia.com/birds/knowYourBirds (click

You only need to delete the function, not set it to null. By setting it
to null, the player still has a reference to the function whether it's
null or not. Hope that helps.

I am sure this has been discussed before, but cannot find it

I have a programmatically created movieclip, mclip, with some code that
assigns functions to mouse events, like this:

private function initMouseActions() {
mclip.owner = this;
mclip.onRollOver= function() {
this.owner.notifyListeners("RollOver");
}
mclip.onRollOut = function() {
this.owner.notifyListeners("RollOut");
}
mclip.onMouseDown = function() {
if (this.hitTest(_xmouse, _ymouse, true) ) {
this.owner.setClicked(true);
this.owner.notifyListeners("MouseDown");
}
else this.owner.setClicked(false);
if (this.owner.clicked == true)

this.owner.setDragging(this.owner.clicked);

}
mclip.onMouseMove = function() {
if (this.hitTest(_xmouse, _ymouse, true) ) {
this.owner.notifyListeners("MouseMove");
}
}
mclip.onMouseUp = function() {
this.owner.mouseDown = false;
if (this.owner.clicked == true) {
/* TODO next 2 actions should be handled
* by listeners after notify */
this.owner.setDragging(false);
this.owner.startDrag_ = false;
this.owner.notifyListeners("MouseUp");
}
}

}

This works as expected. When I want to "freeze" or unfreeze the
movieclip,
I use

public function set frozen(b:Boolean) {
if (b==true) {

delete mclip.onRollOver;
mclip.onRollOver=null;

delete mclip.onRollOut;
mclip.onRollOut=null;

delete mclip.onMouseDown;
mclip.onMouseDown=null;

delete mclip.onMouseMove;
mclip.onMouseMove=null;

delete mclip.onMouseUp;
mclip.onMouseUp=null;
}
else
initMouseActions();
}

This also works ok, BUT the cursor stays the "over a button" style of a
little hand.

Why is that? And how can I get rid of it, short of using commands to
change
the cursor?

Thanks a lot

Re: [Flashcoders] Communication between two swfs?

2006-06-21 Thread Jobe Makar

Peter,

Since ElectroServer is a product of my company of course I'll say its better
:) I think you should ask some non-Electrotankers for input on that
otherwise you're getting a biased assessment. They definately are different
products. FMS supports binary transfer (for audio/video), and is more
expensive. Most of the other features are supported by both ElectroServer
and FMS such as server-side ActionScript, database support, etc.

For first i think i will test your electroserver because the plan is to have
a stable server who is able to communicate with more than 100 hundred users,
but is the flashmedia server similiar to your product or are they totally
different. For first it sounds to me that your server is better for
multiuser applications and the flashmedia server is better for streaming
videos to a broad range of people?!

I will check it out!

Thank you

Peter

RE: [Flashcoders] OT: Junior Developer Flash/Flex Salary?

Why worry about code you've written before? If it were an issue then
no one would be able to build more than one web page in a life time
because you'll inevitably use the same embed tags more than once. No
client knows how or what you code, much less who your other clients
are.

Also, if you let someone pay you $11 dollars an hour - then you are
only worth $11 dollars an hour.

Re: [Flashcoders] Communication between two swfs?

2006-06-21 Thread Jobe Makar

Peter,

ElectroServer is a Java application. If you have a dedicated server then you
can just install it there. Alternatively, you can talk to your web hosting
company and they may install it for you. I know that flashtampa.com has
affordable accounts and ElectroServer is supported there.

Good luck

[Flashcoders] Flash/ASO and ZoneAlarm Security Suite (v6.5.714.000).

2006-06-21 Thread John Grden

If you use zone alarm and you did the latest update (like I did), you might
notice that you're going through a slight nightmare right now with file
modified dates not being updated when you save and having to clear ASO or do
a clean build with Flex2.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite (v6.5.714.000) apparently causes this issue. You
need to downgrade to the last version or un-install until they get a fix
together.

Hth,

to spam them...nah, go ahead.

This is the name of your "OBJECT" or "EMBED" HTML tag.
Try changing it to "mini_player".

We're using the flash player activex plugin for compositing the output of
flash over game graphics, and having a problem the alpha channel returned
from a 32-bit GDI device contect sent to IViewObject::Draw. It seems that
flash 8 sets the alpha channel to completely opaque, while previous and
later versions correctly return the level of semi transparency on every
pixel.

After some searching on the web, I came across this recent post on the same
issue

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.macromedia.flash/browse_thread/thread/36722a217c1d0756/2ded0ab2f3a1d272#2ded0ab2f3a1d272

that mentions a previous post by Tinic Uro from September last year,
suggesting a workaround would be forthcoming. Have authors of projector
software encountered the same problem. Has anyone found a solution yet they
can share?

Searching on the macromedia site, I found the following technote:
http://www.adobe.com/go/94ae4852

which looks like it might be referring to this issue. It seems to boild down
to advising the use of a "destination bitmap of type ARGB". In our case, we
are passing a handle to a 32 bit ARGB device context in a call to
IViewObject::Draw,
although I'm not sure flash can determine from a GDI device context whether
it is xRGB or ARGB.

Is there another recommended draw method where I can pass a destination
bitmap instead?

Thanks in advance,
Bob Ives

[Flashcoders] base param and reload on IE

2006-06-21 Thread Alan Queen

Has anyone else seen this?

We are seeing an issue related to using the BASE attribute where the .swf is
served from a different sub domain than the html page hosting it..

I have used this time and time again without fail...

works great when you first hit the page, but if you use IE and simply hit
reload on the page, it totally disregards the BASE attribute...

We are using lighttpd on linux to serve the content.

It doesnt happen on windoze and mozilla works every time.. only IE has this
problem..

[Flashcoders] Why pressing keyboard combination of CTRL + BACKSPACE has such a strange effect on Flash TextField native object?

2006-06-21 Thread Andriy Panas
Hello ,

  This problem relates to the Textfield native object of Flash player.

  Pressing CTRL+BACKSPACE while inputting text into Input typed
  Textfield insert a black square box at the end of the text string
  while SWF is ran in Internet Explorer 6, Windows XP SP1 or SP2.

  I put the AVI video file that illustrates this problem here:
  http://www.netsoul.com.ua/sonopia/TextField_bug.avi

   I can reproduce it with Flash 8 authored simple SWF file, check FLA
and SWF file attached.

  Environment:
  ---
  Internet Explorer 6, Flash player 7(8), Win XP SP 2 Russian

  To repeat the bug please do the following:

  1) Create on the stage Input typed Textfield

  2) Run SWF in Internet Explorer

  3) Enter some text into instance of Input Textfield native Flash
  object.

  4) Press Ctrl+Backspace keyboard combination

  5) Error: The last symbol of the text is got replaced with some
  weird character, presumably empty square.
