Re: [Flashcoders] mp3 not playing in I.E. 6

2006-02-13 Thread Marc Hoffman

Aaron,

I tried onLoad and it didn't seem to help, but I'm losing mental
focus. Time to get some sleep, but depending whatever other feedback
I get from the list, I will try a test file in the morning.

Thanks,

Marc

in IE i would like to see that test fla.

Hi Aaron,

The sounds are 5 seconds or less in duration. Thanks for the
suggestion, but I really want to know why this breaks in I.E. via
web, as this works just fine in Netscape and Firefox. Also works
fine in I.E. locally, just not over the web. Yet I.E. is caching
the mp3's as they're called from the web server -- it just won't
play them. I could add a Sound.onLoad listener to start the file
playing, but this shouldn't be necessary and I'm not even sure it
would fix the problem. Also, I tried resetting I.E. to its default

Looking in the I.E. cache, I see that the mp3's are getting
loaded when requested; they just don't play. If I type the URL of
the mp3 file into I.E.'s address window, I can get the mp3 to
open and play in Windows MediaPlayer. On a few occasions, I can
then get Flash to play the same sound, but it almost always fails.

I've tried absolute paths (http://mydomain/folder/filename.mp3)
as well as relative paths (../filename.mp3 -OR- filename.mp3) in
the loadSound argument -- makes no difference. And as I said, the
files ARE being downloaded into cache, they just don't get played

Thanks a lot Scott! I guess there will be plenty of a stuff to write
books about. Plus the great variety of options will make it even more
important to
have proper frameworks for the next generation of flash based RIAs.

2006-02-13 Thread JesterXL
You're pretty much dead on. Only thing is, it has nothing to do with Flex,
and everything to do with ECMA compliance and performance. Yes, business
wise, Flex needs ActionScript to change so the performance can be up to par
to what Enterprise customers expect, but it's all about the code, baby!

The biggest bottleneck in AS2 was EventDispatcher since that is pretty much
the enitre plumbing a lot of larger projects utilized. Now that it's built
into the player, it's wicked fast.

Re: [Flashcoders] AS 3.0 tutorials

2006-02-13 Thread Scott Fanetti

Robin,

I am right there with you about the migration from AS2 to AS3.

Basically, as I gather it, packages are pretty much the same thing as
the class path in as2 classes. com.exampleClass would become

package com{
   public class exampleClass{
  public function exampleClass(){
 ... code
   }
   }
}

some things to remember. AS3 constuctors cannot be private ( as of yet
). All the declarative classes (actionscript analogues. The event model has been completely revamped,
too.  Instead of using:

myBtn.onPress = function(){
--click functions
}

you use

myBtn:Button = new Button();
myBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,doOnPress);
function doOnPress(e:MouseEvent):void{
  switch(e.target){
  case myBtn:
 if(e.type==MouseEvent.DOUBLECLICK){
do one thing
  }else{
do another thing
 }
 break;
  case homeBtn:
 -- home button actions
 break;
  case menuBtn:
 -- menu button actions
 break;
   }
}

The whole point is to break apart the procedural calls associated with
typical actionscript and tie the framework together in an object
oriented setting that passes informative event objects to a centralized
event processing area. This might seem like a lot of setup work for a
small application, but the goal with AS3 is to allow for the complexity
associated with rich internet applications in a flash client. Imagine
putting a thousand onPress events all over your application then finding
out you need to refactor (change) a huge chunk of your code to add
another type of functionality. You would have to search through your
code in a hundred places on a hundred frames to get the whole thing
right. With the new way, your centralized events can be monitored and
dispatched in one location You could do this with AS2, but it required
some hacking.

The whole MouseEvent.CLICK thing is just a constant in flex with the
value of "click". They just wanted to provide a constant based
reference to the event name so that developers didn't screw up their app
with a typo. The whole e:MouseEvent thing is the event object that
gets passed as a parameter when the event reaches its target. You can
tell the function to accept e:ChangeEvent or e:WhateverEvent and the
event will only active the function if it is the right kind of event.
This can help you sort through the different types of events that are
available in AS3. You can use that event object to get information about
what triggered the event - as well as define custom reactions to the
event as it flows through the document tree ( think of the document as
an XML file and your button is a node)

I know this 5 second breakdown sucks - and I am just really starting to
understand this stuff today - literally I learned this stuff today - so
don't feel like you are alone in the dark.

Also - if you are a Flex guru with better information - or if I screwed
up on my syntax above - I would love to get a reply to correct it.

Thanks
Scott Fanetti

Hi there,

Do you guys know of any tutorials how to set up an action script project
with flex builder 2.0 beta? It all is somehow a bit confusing I think.
Especially I don't really understand the concept and purpose of
packages.

Btw what was wrong about using class paths? Wasn't that good and simple
way to avoid naming conflicts?

[Flashcoders] Post data in frameset never makes it to new window, IE only.

2006-02-13 Thread Chris Hill

Hello all,

I'm working on a site that I didn't make but have to update. They used
frames in the site, and I've come across a bug that existed in MX2004
that (i guess) was never fixed. Basically the POST data sent from Flash
never makes it to its destination, leaving me with a big empty page.
This only happens on IE if you're sending POST data from a frameset.
Here are a lot of unhappy people who've had the same issue:

http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/mx2004/main_7_2/1418.html

So I'm pretty stuck, because I have to post a lot of data, and I can't
unmake this site so it doesn't use frames. Would anyone have any magic
fairy dust, or even better, a solution to this problem? I'd also be
interested in knowing why this bug still exists, as I'm working on Flash 8.

Any shedded light is mucho appreciated.

it should be. RegExp adds some functions to String() by prototype, sth.

it works (or should work) simpilar like preg_replace() in php.

Yeah I shouldn't diss it.. it's a cool tool, i'll give them that!. I

Re: [Flashcoders] Background transparent ? is it possible

2006-02-13 Thread John Dowdell

Ben Smeets wrote, of WMODE in-browser compositing:
For Firefox browsers too??

Flash Player 6 and above have the hooks necessary to route the Player's
rendering to the browser's offscreen compositing buffer, rather than
directly to screen:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/releasenotes/player/rn_6.html

But I'm not sure how well all the various Firefox versions implement
this, particularly when combined with other authoring choices... I've
seen reports that some Firefox don't respect WMODE requests when invoked
 from an OBJECT tag rather than an EMBED tag... there was an older
issue in some Microsoft browsers where a WMODE toggle would send to the
printer upside-down... a browser can "support" a feature but there's
always the question of how similar it is in all respects to other
implementations.

Anyway, yeah, WMODE should work in Firefox, try it with a simple file
first, first for background-transparency and then for CSS layering.

do you know of a way using actionscript (setting properties) where you can
specify the height
and width of the new browser window along with the positioning on the
screen. i have not been
able to find any reference for this.

in my html site i just use a javascript function to open a new window where
i can set the size,
position and scrolling properties which is then called by the ahref to open
up in this specific
sized and positioned window.

i tried messing with html but i did it wrong.

If memory serves, the argument to attachAudio() must be either a
Microphone object or a NetStream object playing a video, so this
approach won't work. Try initializing the Sound object with a reference
to the MovieClip containing the embedded video.

I just tried the following and it worked ok,

var __myVideoContainer:MovieClip = this.attachMovie( "myVideo", "vid", 2 );

var __sound:Sound = new Sound(__myVideoContainer);
__sound.setVolume(0);

The "myVideo" clip contained a video (with sound) that I imported to the
timeline. Send me e-mail if you want the .FLA

good luck!

RE: [Flashcoders] Set volume of flash video?

2006-02-13 Thread Mendelsohn, Michael
Thanks for the feedback Jim...however, my video is embedded, and it
looks like netstream only works with an external video. Any idea how
this can be done with an embedded video?

Here's the code I've tried:

vid.gotoAndStop(2);
// vid is the MC containing the embedded Flash video
// create audio control MC
vid.onEnterFrame = function() {
// does this when the video is loaded and set to go...
var audioControl:MovieClip =
_root.createEmptyMovieClip("audioControl", 66);
var audioLevel:Sound = new Sound(_root.audioControl);
audioControl.attachAudio(vid);
audioLevel.setVolume(15);
vid.onEnterFrame = function() {
};
};

Thanks,
- Michael M.

__audioControl = __timeline.createEmptyMovieClip( "audio", __depth++ );
__sound= new Sound(__audioControl);
.
.
.
__player.attachVideo(__ns);
__audioControl.attachAudio(__ns);
__sound.setVolume(__volumeLevel);

__player is a reference to a Flash video object (inside another clip).

__ns is the NetStream reference.

Lets say you've got a 400x300 movieclip, with an anchor point of

If you want to change the anchor to 200,0 ... what do you do?

MovieClip.setAnchor(x,y) doesn't exist, right?

It seems like one would have to load the movie into another
movieclip, offset the position of the subMovie, then rotate the
parent clip right? Is this the only way? Any tips or tricks
would be greatly appreciated.

An HTML browser's interface was built around navigating a web of
hyperlinked documents. But applications generally have an undo stack.
Some people see these as being similar, some don't... I see them as
sorta-related, but intrinsically different. Varies with the app, though.

Offering the type of navigation interface your audience would prefer
within the SWF itself seems a way to avoid confusing application-undo
with view-prior-document, true...?

[Flashcoders] sorting my dataset

2006-02-13 Thread Manuel Saint-Victor
Good afternoon Flashcoders.

Is there a way to sort the dataset when I add an item to it. I want the set
to be sorted by the first columns. I see the doSort(); and addSort()
methods and have tried with no success thus far. I was considering passing
the data to an array and soring that and then passing it back but that seems
like a long way to go to sort a dataset.

Any pointers?

Thanks in advance,
Mani

[Flashcoders] No variables in Interfaces?

Hi,

Is there NO way to use variables in an interface?

Code:

var obj:ICanvas = new ClassThatImplementsICanvas();
trace(obj.value); // Error: Line 342: There is no property with the name
'value'.

So, then I add this line to ICanvas.as

var value:Number;

Recompile:

Error: ICanvas.as: Line 41: Variable declarations are not permitted in
interfaces.

What is the solution? Is there any type-safe way of doing this? Or do I have

var obj:ICanvas = new ClassThatImplementsICanvas();
var obj2 = obj;
trace(obj2.value); // Compiles and works, but lose type checking.

no. its a whole framework with better written components, databinding
and
autolayout. we don't use the enterprise servers in my current

(nothing goes onto the servers without a code review...) and flex is
still
much better than flash IMO. i never want to do another project based

we don't use flex builder at all for flex 1.5, rather use a standard
xml
editor in eclipse and FDT.

RE: [Flashcoders] Stage.width not working in IE

2006-02-13 Thread Josh Tynjala
In Firefox and Mozilla, you need to manually set the height of the page
via CSS to get the Flash movie to resize correctly:

html, body {height: 80%;}

--
While trying to make a sample, the problem has changed:
now it works in Opera and IE, but in Firefox and Mozilla can't see
Stage.height...

Demo:

http://gousable.com/flash/temp/resize_in_ie1.html

Files (fmx2004):

http://gousable.com/flash/temp/ie_resize.zip

Any help / ideas appreciated.

Hi list,

I'm looking for a piece of math to rotate a mc around a pivotpoint,
other then its original. I've seen the math before in a demo, on some
blog perhaps, but can't seem to find it again. I made some attempts to
write it myself, but my math is as rusty as a german submarine.

yeah...i havent checked out cairngorm, but from what i hear its mostly
directed towards flex apps. ARP is generally more for flash
apps...though I dont know if there's anything stopping you from
switching the two if you wanted.

its a method of uicomponent

More specifically, createClassObject is a mix-in method that gets
added to MovieClip when you have a UIComponent in your library.

Peter: You should try calling...

super.createClassObject( ...whataver... );

...if you're extending a MovieClip.

Hello,

I'm trying to create a button on-the-fly within a class declaration, but am

"There is no method with the name 'createClassObject'."

Contents of Hint.as:

class Hint extends MovieClip {

var hintTextBox:MovieClip;

function Hint() {

}

function init() {
var
mBox:Button=createClassObject(Button,"myButton",1,{label:"howdy"});
}
}

--

Contents of hintTest.fla:

var myBut:Hint = new Hint();

Re: [Flashcoders] Ensuring commercial is played before the video while keeping .FLV external

2006-02-13 Thread Steve Webster

Way off topic in my response -- why do you want to that?
Just to piss off your potential customers? You have the right to
waste their valuable time?

What arrogance.

Splash screens are bad enough, this is WORSE!!!

Do you create content for free? Someone has to pay for the content to
be created and the bandwidth required to stream it to all and sundry,
and more often that not that means subscription or advertising.
Unless you're willing to pay for the content, you're going to have to
put up with commercials.

From a personal perspective, I hate adverts. I hate having to go to
the cinema and sit through 15-20 minutes of adverts before the film
starts, but I like the fact that I'm only paying £5 to watch a big
blockbuster that cost hundreds of millions to make. If cinemas were
to scrap ads, we'd all be paying upwards to £10 (or local equivalent)
to watch a movie.

Unfortunately, you either have to get used to this kind of situation,
or get a big bucket of sand to hide your head in. :o)

Have you ever visted espn.com? They have videos on their site that
you can't watch
until you see the ad before it. I believe that on mtv.com's broadband
site you can't
watch their clips until you watch an ad as well...so it's being done
already and a good
way for advertisers to be ensured that their spots will be viewed
since they pay for that

time and space.
I don't personally like it but it works.

Re: [Flashcoders] Ensuring commercial is played before the video whilekeeping .FLV external

Even doing that, a user could still find the remote file by using a tool
like Fiddler (http://www.fiddlertool.com). If the user is willing to go
through the trouble of bypassing your current method, it's unlikely they
would be stopped by obscuring the filename. Combining the files seems the
only sure way to do what you want, but I don't know how to do that.

[Flashcoders] Re: Ensuring commercial is played before the video while keeping .FLV external

2006-02-13 Thread Jamay Liu
If advertisers are paying for a commercial, it'd be nice if the commercial
were actually distributed. Also, it might not be a commercial but just a
simple branding logo/animation that identifies the video as ours. The swf
will also be a preloader for the video, so another purpose is to entertain
viewers while the video is loading.

BAD-strings in (to-be-uploaded) Filenames but had no success at all. can anyone
give me some hints ?

i have:

import RegExp;

var a:String = 'äur*?ß.png';
var goodname:RegExp = new RegExp ('/[^a-z0-9_\\-\\.]/i', 'g', 'i');
str.text = a.replace(goodname, '_');

but the compiler says type mismatch in line 6

any hints appreciated

[Flashcoders] Select all text onSetFocus of a TextField

2006-02-13 Thread Mark Walters
This seems like it should be easily solved, but I keep running into an
issue so I was hoping I could get some fresh ideas from you guys.

I want to have default text in a TextField, and when a user clicks
into it I want all of the text to be selected as if it was tabbed
into.

I currently have added an onSetFocus method to the TextField which in
turn calls a setInterval for another method called "selectText". The
selectText method calls Selection.setSelection (0, field.text.length);

Now this works wonderfully if you click to the right of the text, but
if you click in the middle of the text, when the mouse lets up the
text that is selected is 0 to the caret index.

Does anyone know of a way to get around this?

Thanks in advance,

- markW

The problem with the back button is that people are
very used to using it for navigating internet content.
 When I got non-technical people to test my Central
applications (in the Central environment, not the
browser) they would still ask "Where's the back button?".

It's a real conundrum - so many sites provide their own "Back" button,
usually in JavaScript, some users look for that. Other users tune up their
custom keyboards and mice to use the built-in Back/Forward capability,
others become very used to the keyboard shortcuts. Still others religiously
use the browser's navigation buttons.

Last summer I project I was involved with, for a short while, required
browser navigation to work, while still minimizing load times for Flash. I
left before that was implemented, so can't tell you how it was done.

So, to answer the original question - yes, ideally provide browser
navigation. Realistically, some Flash applications are so complex it's not
practical.
Example? www.gigagolf.com, no back button, v. impressive RIA. (There's an
even more complex one mentioned a couple of weeks ago which can model big
share buys and the offer to make.)

So, as always, "It depends".

Cheers - Miles

Maybe not the best solution, but if they get the file name from the

Re: [Flashcoders] Stage.width not working in IE

2006-02-13 Thread Lanny McNie
I have had instances where it took 2 frames to initialize. And to critique
your code, you should delete the onEnterFrame BEFORE calling init, in case
the init function creates an onEnterFrame of its own, it would be deleted
immediately.

Man, I feel like a broken record. :-) Didn't this just come up recently.
Anyway, I suggest that you try Xray: http://osflash.org/xray as it has this
ability (Xray.trace(myObject);) and tons more. It will indeed save you time

Re: [Flashcoders] Jabber - XIFF & Dreamhost

2006-02-13 Thread Chris Allen
Hey Jesse,

I don't know about the XMPP implementation that Dreamhost uses, but some of
these servers don't like to return a null byte to terminate the stanza which
Flash XMLSocket requires. Sometimes you need to give the Jabber server a
special initiator to let it know that you are a Flash client and therefore
need this null terminator.

Sean Voisen originally wrote the XIFF library for the 1.4 version of the
JabberD server. This was before he joined with Jive. Anyway, that server
didn't require you to pass anything special to connect with a Flash client
so the initial handshake was simply:" wrote:

What I mean is an swf that can respond to browser's back button i.e.
jumping back to a previous frame/state that the user has viewed.

The problem with the back button is that people are

 When I got non-technical people to test my Central

Exactly!
My US partner who really concerns about usability wants to have it in
his clients' sites. I'm not sure about that because famous Flash sites
like 2A's, Widegroup's, etc. don't have it.
