Hi,

is it possible to do syntax highlighting for MXML in Dreamweaver instead of

Can someone tell me which files to copy?

Thanks,

[flexcoders] Cairngorm 1.0 release date?

2005-04-04 Thread dan_tropp

I've recently started investigating Flex. Although the information is
spread all over the place, I've read some good things about the
Cairngorm framework.

Anyword on when 1.0 will be released?
Will this include any signifant changes or extensions from the 0.9
release?

Also, the 0.9 release seemed to leave a number of design decisions
open. I'd be interested in any documentation to read further about
the intent behind the framework design and other patterns it seeks to
support (beyond Service and Controller). Any links?
Or do I have to get hold of the Iteration:Two book?

cheers

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Cairngorm 1.0 release date?

2005-04-04 Thread Steven Webster

Hi Dan,

 Will this include any signifant changes or extensions from
 the 0.9 release?

There will be some new additions to the framework, but nothing
that breaks your existing usage of the framework. My hope is to
pull together an email in the near future, summarising what the
new additions will bring to you.

 Also, the 0.9 release seemed to leave a number of design
 decisions open.

This is absolutely intentional -- it is not the remit of the
framework to be overly prescriptive about how you implement your
application; it's intended (and will always continue to be) a
lightweight framework. Many have proposed changes to the
framework that would have made their own application developments
easier, however almost always, these recommendations are domain
specific and not general enough for inclusion.

 I'd be interested in any documentation to
 read further about the intent behind the framework design and
 other patterns it seeks to support (beyond Service and
 Controller).  Any links?
 Or do I have to get hold of the Iteration:Two book?

Of course you should get a hold of the iteration::two book :-)

But ... the chapter that discusses much of the design patterns
is freely available for download at http://flexbook.iterationtwo.com/

Best,

Steven

Hi
Aral,

Thanks
for the reply.

Yes I
would be interested. I have also had an email from "Greenfishinwater" that also
expressed interest and I have mailed them back to see if they would be
interested in meeting up.

As I
said to Greenfish (don't know their real name yet) I have never been to a User
Group - apart from a local BBC MicroUser Club when I was a kid. So I don't
really know what goes on. Generally I try to avoid going into London unless I
really need to - I prefer to drive than train.

Greenfish is in Guildford and I'm in Southampton - perhaps we could all
meet up somewhere in between?

Here
are some questions I asked Greenfish:

For example, where
do you find you spend the most time - is it debugging Actionscript/MXML? Or, is
it debugging RemoteObject/WebService communications?
If you have found
ways of overcoming these types of problems - how?
Have you made any
components or extension to components that you would be willing and able to
share?
Would you be
willing/able to work collaboratively on some component
development?
What are your other
skills?
What platform do you
develop on/for?
Do you program other
languages?
Do you work for a
company or are you a lone developer?

If you
have any questions for me, fire away!

Kind
Regards,

Simon
Fifield

Hi,
Does any one know how to un-select an already selected row in a datagrid?
Situation is like this, user can navigate data either by selecting an item
from datagrid or by clicking PrevBtn or NextBtn. When user selected an item
from DG and then used PrevBtn or NextBtn then data displayed on screen is
not for highlighted item in the grid. I want to un-select the item in DG as
soon as user click either PrevBtn or NextBtn? I know there is a
clearSelected( ) method available but the drawback, according to Doc, is it
clears and re-draws the entire list. I don't want to do this because of time
delay if I have huge data in DG. Thanks in advance..

Thanks!

Does the combobox show all the 27 seven
items at once? If it does then no wonder it wont fit. Have you tried using:

rowCount: Number

This should
show specified number of items on the list and others should be scrollable. I
hope this helps you to fit the combobox to screen properly.

Not sure, which Text editor you use. But you can do it with Notepad. Open

Make an if statement that will run based on two conditions rather than just one. Is this possible to do in Flex?

Re: [flexcoders] How do you do this in flex

2005-04-04 Thread John Daharsh

This seems like a simple enough question...

Scenario 1, 1 condition:

if(condition1)
{
   execute code;
}

Scenario 2, 2 conditions:

if(condition1  condition 2)
{
   execute code;
}

You do that in Actionscript -- this is a very basic idea in
programming. Did I misread your question?

Not sure, which Text editor you use. But you can do it with Notepad. Open

Encoding combobox. Select UTF-8 from it and save your file.

If I do this:

Use the character code directly.

  mx:Label text=#8364; /

If the font supports that character, it'll get displayed.

euro; is not reliable even in browsers.

And if you insert the character directly, make sure you save the file

RE: [flexcoders] Problem with showBusyCursor on a popupWindow

2005-04-04 Thread Matt Chotin

Do you know what method its trying
to call?  I suppose the window could be introspecting the contained objects but
that would be weird.  A workaround would maybe be to move the RemoteObject
outside the TitleWindow into another class and simply have your functions call
the outside remote object.

You can bind to the result from the GetResults function directly, flex
takes care of generating the binding code for you. (no need to dispatch

E.g.,

Or, if you need to invoke a method with the results
mx:ComboBox
dataProvider={myFunction(this.parent.Webservice1.GetResults.result)}/

define your operation like:

The object to which I am adding the property is one of my classes,

If you have an instance of a dynamic class, you can just stick them

It does. The Flex compiler need to know the type of the references in

 HI Cynthia,

 You can prevent it by explicit casting links to String, like this...

   mx:GridRow
  mx:GridItem horizontalAlign=right
 local:Label text={rptRowRep.currentItem.title}/
 local:LinkEx
 label={formatData(rptRowRep.currentItem.alloc)}
 link={String(rptRowRep.currentItem.alloc.drilldown)} /
 local:LinkEx
label={formatData(rptRowRep.currentItem.exp)}
 link={String(rptRowRep.currentItem.exp.drilldown)}/

 link={String(rptRowRep.currentItem.enc.drilldown)}/

 Abdul,

 Thanks for the example. This works great! One further question
though
 -- is there a way to get rid of the Changes to unknown property,
 drilldown, will not be detected warning? It doesn't pose a major
 problem, in that the link won't change once it's been populated, but
it

[flexcoders] Developer Edition whitelist?

2005-04-04 Thread Kevin Conboy

Hello, all. Our Trial version of the Flex 1.5 server has expired, and
we're having a hard time finding the (what we assume to be an) XML file
where we enter the 5 allowed IP addresses owned by the developers on
the local network so that they can continue to develop their
application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

RE: [flexcoders] Events and Components

2005-04-04 Thread Matt Chotin

In 1.5 the web service doesnt
cleanly support adding event listeners at runtime, youd need to do it at
compile-time through the tag (this is changing in the next version). But you
could delegate this work if you wanted by using something like a Responder as
mentioned in the Cairngorm framework and the iteration::two book.

I'm not sure if this'll work, but try passing the

part of the GetResuts event. So in your
doSomething() you get the
event object which contains the result object.

Binding does not work well when you reach up to a parent component. You
will have better luck passing a reference into the sub-component.
In the main app(Myapp):
MyComponent id=mc1 app={this} .../

And in MyComponent:
public var app:MyApp; //data typing is required!

then:
text={app.someComponent.someProperty}

RE: [flexcoders] Run MXML on PC, Calling to Java on Remote Server - Help

2005-04-04 Thread Peter Farland

If you're using RemoteObject, you can set the endpoint property to a
remote Flex / Flash Remoting server in the mx:RemoteObject tag. The
default is generated from the url set in the
/WEB-INF/flex/flex-config.xml file, which happens to be a relative URL
by default (to your local machine).

Also, are you aware of the sandbox security restrictions on the Flash
Player 7 plugin and do you know about crossdomain.xml policy files?

2005-04-04 Thread javawebgrrl

Hi,
  I wanted to use some looping mechanism so that I can process the
combo box's in a loop in my actionscript. When the user
clicks save I don't want to go have to check 4 differant combo box
id's to see what was selected, if I create them in a loop, I can
just loop through the results. For example

mx:Repeater
mx:ComboBox id=cbox dataProvider={data)/
 /mx:Repeater

Then . . .
var results:Array = new Array();
for(i=0;irepLength;i++){
  var sel:String = cbox[i].selectedItem;
  results.push(sel);
}

Instead of having identical code for four differant combo boxs with
4 differant id's, that I would then have to evaluate for the
selected Items 4 differant times.

RE: [flexcoders] Sort Order in a DataGrid

For really fine grained sorting you can
sort the dataProvider in action script and use Array.sortOn.

DataGrid has sortItemsBy.

DataGrid is supposed to recognize numeric
columns and sort accordingly. If it is not working, make sure you really have
numbers and not strings that look like numbers.

Hi,

You can use your own sorting method(algorithm) to sort entire grid. Or you
can apply your algorithm on a particualr column.

Look at DataGrid.sortItems(sortFunc:Function, order):Void method.
Also look at DataGridColumn.sortCompareFunction:Function property

DataGrid.sortItems(..) @livedocs:

Subject: [flexcoders] Sort Order in a DataGrid

Might someone point me in the right direction for altering the sort order
method(s) for a DataGrid? It's currently annoying litteral. I'd like to
alter it so it is case insensitive. Currently the column orders somewhat
like this:

A
B
C
.
.
Z
a
b
c
.
.
.
z

while I'd like it to order like:

A
a
B
b
C
c

etc...

I hope someone can throw me in the right direction, thanks!

Hi Eric,

I am sure you will get some feedback on this list. I will suggest you to
look into another mailing list, which is chattyfig's flashcoders list.

You can get some real good feedback/information from there also. You might
want to search the flashcoders archive...

Has anyone had real experience using XMLSOcket with a large set of

While we're at it, there's also Oregano-Server, which is an open source

Be warned though, XMLSocket on the Linux Player isn't 100% reliable.

[flexcoders] How to get access to HttpSession in a stateful-class

2005-04-04 Thread cazzaran

I have some remote business delegates that are stateful. Is there a
way to get access to the session that they are being held in?

For example, I have a UserDelegate that handles user based business
logic for the current logged in user, and it maintains a member
variable of the user so I don't need to keep passing User stuff over
the network. I also have a GroupDelegate, that obviously handles Group
stuff. I need to be able to access the User variable in the
UserDelegate so I can figure out some information about the user
before I perform the Group operations (i.e. authorization, etc). My
problem is that my Delegates are just POJOs, and so have no knowledge
of requests, or sessions. Is there a way to get to the session that
the stateful-class is being held in, or get at the request that is
associated with that session?

I know I could pass User information over the wire to my
GroupDelegate, but this is inefficient, since the data's right there
in memory on the server.

Any help is appreciated!

[flexcoders] Re: AS - adding dynamic properties to an object

2005-04-04 Thread viraf_bankwalla

Thanks - the example below would have worked if I had knowledge of the
property name when I wrote the code. This is not the case (the
property name is retrieved with a service request).

The solution that I found was to use the associative array syntax -

obj[propertyName] = yy;

Now the next question is that how do I specify that propertyName is
of a given type - say Date or Number.

Thanks.

 If you have an instance of a dynamic class, you can just stick them
 onto the object.

  var o:Object = new Object(); // dynamic object
  o.newProperty = default value; // stick a new property onto it

 Pretty much it.

A quick way to do it (ugly admittedly) is to use the 'instanceof' or
'typeof' operator.

if ( obj[propertyName] instanceof Date )

You might need to cast into number or date before you check the instance of

Re: [flexcoders] Re: AS - adding dynamic properties to an object

2005-04-04 Thread JesterXL

A rundown of them all:

Who's on here?
-
function showProps(o:Object):Void
{
for(var p in o)
{
trace(-);
trace(p + :  + o[p]);
trace(typeof:  + typeof(o[p]));
trace(is a String:  + (o[p] instanceof String));
trace(is a Number:  + (o[p] instanceof Number));
trace(is a Array:  + (o[p] instanceof Array));
trace(is a Boolean:  + (o[p] instanceof Boolean));
trace(is a Date:  + (o[p] instanceof Date));
}
}

Obviously there are more data types.

You know the type (not recommended):

var val:String = o[p];

You coerce the type (recommended, but expect weird results):

var val:MyClass = MyClass(o[p]);

Keep in mind, the above works differently since some intrinsic datatypes
have special constructors; String(something) actually converts it to a
String, and Date's overloaded with a few different ways of making them.

...obviously, interfaces are typically the best way, since you can typecast
'em (I think, I did it with a CollectionItr):

var myA:Iterator = Interator(reallyARecordSet);

Or something to that effect.

Re: [flexcoders] How to get access to HttpSession in a stateful-c lass

2005-04-04 Thread Dan Tropp

This may be a stupid question, but if your flex app is wrapped in in a
jsp file (using something like mm:mxml source=.../) can you access
variables in request scope? Or can you pass selected variables into a
flex app?

I got around it by having initialize=callHttpServiceToGetInitData() in
my mx:Application, but this seemed like a bit of a code smell.

cheers

Dan

 *Subject:* [flexcoders] How to get access to HttpSession in a
 stateful-class
