[flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-05 Thread Bjorn Schultheiss

I’m using a CF backend in my
personal flex joints.

It’s very easy to set-up and the wizards
are a nice touch for the UI guys.

If you want to go hardcore though, Java
is your best option.

I don’t need Php, I’m not
poor.

Subject: [flexcoders] ColdFusion
vs. PHP as the back-end

I started my
quest to explore Flex rather recently; I never did much with v1.5, mostly
because the cost involved to launch any commercial solution created with it.
Now, with 2.0 it’s pretty exciting to see everything that is now, rather
easily (and inexpensively!), possible to do.

But one
thing I’m not quite clear on yet: what is the difference, or benefit
from, between basic remoting as is possible with PHP/CF/ASP.NET, and the
extended interaction with ColdFusion which makes it possible to “pass
actual instances of Actionscript Classes and have them map directly into a CFC
Instances – and vice versa” (a quote from Tim Buntel’s blog)?

Thanks for
any insights!

Ville

I am
trying to use flashtype fonts, which involves embedding the font in a swf and
then importing the font from a swf into flex. The problem is that flex seems to
be rendering these fonts much less well than flash does.

As a test, I have text in the swf that I am embedding. The text looks fine when
displayed in this swf. When I import the font and display it in my app, the
font looks really muddy. It looks as if it is not using all that cool font
rendering stuff that is in flash 8. The edges are extremely soft.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience in getting crisp embedded
fonts. By the way I have been playing with fontAntiAliasType, fontGridType, and
fontSharpness with the idea that adjusting these might fix the problem, thought
nothing has had any effect.

=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).approved;  model.currentUser.lastLogin
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).lastLogin;  model.currentUser.createDate

If I do EITHER OF THESE (not all at

Any ideas what I'm doing

Maybe when you're closing the popup it's somehow triggering all the change events simultaneously. On 6/27/06, digital_eyezed <

Hi, the only events are fired on creation (go get the remote objects

It seems to be linked to the firing of multiple different remote objects.

i.e. if I go to remoteobect1 and get a return from method 1 thats
fine, however as soon as i add remoteObject2 it causes this issue
although all the remote objects fire and provide results as expected,
its just when I close the Popup I see the busy cursor etc.

Really weird!

Re: [flexcoders] Tabbed Browsing support? htmlText, navigateToURL(), Javascript?

2006-07-05 Thread Nick Collins

I imagine it would be very difficult as not all browsers support tabs, and the implementations of those tabs are different in each. ie Firefox vs. IE7 vs. Safari vs Opera, etc.On 7/2/06,
Greg Hamer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

For me the problems are ...

1) With navigateToURL(), how would you specify "new tab"?

2) With anchors in htmlText, Flash Player provides the context
menu. The Flash Player browser plug-ins include in the context
menu the option "Open in new window". (The freestanding Flash Player
omits this option.)

3) With _javascript_, as a Flex/ActionScript developer I currently do not
possess the knowledge how to code a _javascript_ solution. (fyi ...
I have done some google searches on this, but so far no luck.) If
anyone can point me to a _javascript_ code solution, it would be much
appreciated :-)

Note: For those from Adobe that read this list ... With IE7's release
and it's support for tabbed browsing, if Flash Player provides no
support for opening links in tabs it will be increasing apparent that
Flash Player is essentially unaware of tabbed browsers.)

As part of our continuing effort at transparency here is a short list of questions and attempts at answers. Let us preface this by saying that we have only begun the planning phases of the next release(s), so many of these answers will be incomplete until we've had some more time (and
sleep). Q: Is there going to be a Flex Builder release for the Mac? A: Yes Q: Why wasn't it released with the Windows version? A: We began by developing Flex Builder for both Mac and Windows at the same time. However during development we ran into a number of issues that
were specific to OS X and needed to be addressed in Eclipse itself. Fixing those issues would have meant delaying the overall schedule, so we decided to focus on finishing the Windows release before returning to the Mac in a follow-up. In the meantime the Eclipse community has been working on Eclipse 3.2 which fixes a number of the issues we ran into earlier. This makes the likelihood of a timely Mac release that much better, and we're looking forward to continuing to improve Eclipse on the Mac. Q: When will Flex Builder for the Mac be available? A: We are still in our planning phases but we are hoping to have a public
beta on Labs this year and the production release early next year. One can imagine a particular event in October where we'd be thrilled if we could launch the beta, but we simply don't know our timelines yet. We can say that a whole lot of Flex Builder engineers just received shiny new toys to help in this pursuit, while Product Management received nothing. Not that Product Management is jealous. Q: If I buy Flex Builder for Windows can I transfer that license to the Mac when it comes out? A: Honestly we're not sure yet, we still need to figure this out. We'll need another few weeks to answer this, hopefully before the
trial expires. Q: Will Flex Builder for Mac run on PPC, Intel, or both? A: We're very excited about the new Intel-based Macs (at least the engineers who received them are, PM is still not jealous) and at minimum we will be supporting that platform. We'd be interested in getting your feedback on the importance of supporting PPC given how quickly the Intel is getting adopted. Feel free to leave feedback here. Q: What about Flash Player 9 on the Intel for Mac? A: You can grab a beta version of that Player here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/public_beta Q: What do I do in the meantime if I have a Mac? A: Download and use the free SDK. [flexcoders] Re: Flex 2 - Drag-n-Drop with TabNavigator

2006-07-05 Thread Wayne McFetridge
Paul and others interested,

Thanks for your input -- you could be correct regarding the usefulness
of this "feature"

I have a tabnavigator that has as children a "search results datagrid"
and in another tab a "favorites datagrid" -- essentially the same grid
with a different dataProvider.

To "add to favourites" I have implemented a "right click - Add to
favorites" context menu over the results datagrid.
I will have an "add to favorites" icon in each row and was thinking of
doing drag/drop where you drag the
row from the "results grid" up onto the "favourites" tab and drop it.

There are other tabs so I need to check what tab the user is "over" to
accept drop or not.
Thus the need to try and find out which of my Tabnavigators children I
am "over".

I am probably happy NOT to add this feature but when I "user tested" a
prototype (on an audience of 1 - my wife) it was a feature that was
requested ;-)

Happy Independence Day to American Based Flex developers.

I am trying to drag and drop over a TabNavigator --
ie drag something over a "tab" to have it open that tab

I'd be curious to know how this drag and drop idea improves upon
clicking the tab and then dropping inside the open tab?

Are you trying to do two things at once - replacing click plus drop with
a single drop if the tab isn't already open?

Personally I think it sounds dangerous. If you drop target is inside an
open tab, then all well and good, but dropping onto the unopened tab
itself is prone to having the user drop onto the wrong tab, which isn't
too user friendly. I also think it's a behaviour likely to confuse the
users. I don't think I've ever seen an application behave like this - it
doesn't follow the tab metaphor.

If I've got the wrong idea please tell me!

Paul
Am I overloooking something really simple ? Hope so

[flexcoders] Dynamically create Tabs in TabNavigator

2006-07-05 Thread Nick Collins

I'm trying to figure out how to add tabs to a TabNavigator dynamically with a button click. Essentially adding tabbed browsing like capabilities to my app. Right now when I double click an item in my DataGrid  it opens a popup window using the WindowManager class from the CF Wizard. I'd like it to instead create a new tab with the title and content I specify. Anyone got any pointers or ideas on how I might be able to accomplish this? Thanks in advance!

[flexcoders] arrayCollection to custom value object

2006-07-05 Thread Shannon Hicks

So, I've got an
ArrayCollection and a defined value object. The ArrayCollection has just one
record in it, and the data matches the valueObject perfectly. Here's my
code:

If I do this,
everything works:
  model.currentUser.userID =
loginResult.getItemAt(0).userID;  model.currentUser.username
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).username;  model.currentUser.name
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).name;  model.currentUser.email
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).email;  model.currentUser.city
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).city;  model.currentUser.state
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).state;  model.currentUser.country
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).country;  model.currentUser.approved
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).approved;  model.currentUser.lastLogin
=
loginResult.getItemAt(0).lastLogin;  model.currentUser.createDate
= loginResult.getItemAt(0).createDate;
If I do EITHER OF
THESE (not all at once), model.currentUser remains NULL:
1model.currentUser = loginResult.getItemAt(0) as
user;2model.currentUser = loginResult as
user;

Any ideas what I'm
doing wrong?

[flexcoders] Re: Handle result/fault from webservice call in Cairngorm 2

2006-07-05 Thread ben.clinkinbeard
I guess maybe I should clarify that my experience with Cairngorm is
pretty much limited to Steven's article on devnet.
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/cairngorm_pt5_04.html

On that page, in his ProductDelegate example class, there is this
function:

public function getProducts() : Void
   {
  var call = service.getProducts();
  call.resultHandler = Delegate.create( responder,
responder.onResult );
  call.faultHandler = Delegate.create( responder,
responder.onFault );
   }

This obviously references the Delegate class from AS2, but what is the
AS3/Cairngorm 2 equivalent? How do you write a delegate (lowercase
'd') in Cairngorm 2?

Thanks,
Ben

I've got still an error. Here my code how I've build

- Main App
private
function init():void{var call:AsyncToken =
ServiceLocator.getInstance().getService("webservice").getData(); call.addEventListener(mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent.RESULT,

When I use
it this way I've got still an error from the debug player: "resultHandler is no

Nevermind, I found it. For some reason you have to manually go into
each of the validators you don't want required and set them to

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Cairngorm Responder interface changes

2006-07-05 Thread JesterXL

1. ResultEvent & FaultEvent events.  I
disagree with this change, so have changed them back instead of of
using the * change for the Responder interface.

2. Command callbacks.  Sometimes, there is a
legitimate need for a View to "know" when a Command is completed.  In my
consulting, we've added an optional callback method that can be passed via
EventBroadcaster (Cairngorm 1).  So, View's launching Commands have the
option of using a Callback (like flash.net.Responder) to have a result method
called when the Command is done.  We extended Cairngorm's command to have
all of this plumbing hidden.  The convention we have is, "If the View has
his onResult run, he can conclude that the Command succeeded in it's
operation."  If a fault was fired in the Delegate, this means the app is
broken and needs to be fixed.  There is no error handling, only error
fixing.

In my personal work, I've implemented both; result
and faults, via Event's.  If an event extends my JXLEvent class (which
extends Cairngorm), it has the option of getting those callbacks.  I should
probably do it like we do it at work, but for now, it works.  I like
handling errors, so although fault and result are pretty low level, I can have
View's handle errors (or Commands obviously).

Both avoid ViewLocator via a nice convention.
It also makes it cake to have a chained command with visual feedback.  You
can have your View fire off other commands in a particular order AND show visual
feedback the whole time.  Could you do this by binding?  Sure,
but I'd rather use functions vs. state variables.

3. Added 2 methods to ServiceLocator.  He
doesn't support Producer or Consumer (MessageAgent) services, so with a new
method he does.  He also doesn't support NetConnection; with the new
method, he does.  Since Cairngorm was made for a more request response, it
feels like both of the above are halfway implemented, but for sending messages,
Cairngorm works great, including Acknowledge messages for Delegates that fire
the original message.  In both cases, actual callbacks are handled by
totally different classes that basically act as Observers, and emit
events.  The more specialized (for example, a channel in FDS created for
Text messages, and thus Chat only) is an extension of that ConsumerObserver
class, called ChatObsever, and he omits Chat specific events for those who
care.  They, like Delegate's, utlize ServiceLocator.

I would, however, prefer you all either give me a
better idea(s), christen this idea as good for handling NetConnection / FDS'
consumer/producer model, and/or implement something that supports these push
based technologies into Cairngorm.

With the exclusion of #1, both #2, and #3 can be
done via extneding the Cairngorm base classes so you're not affecting the
original framework, only extending it.  I'd prefer #3 be made official
though, by you all somehow, some way.

Jesse,

I'd love for you to share the modifications you're making
to Cairngorm, and to understand the rationale behind these changes.  It's
not our intention that developers would typically  need to change the
framework locally, and doing so certainly makes it more difficult for folks to
follow us on any upgrade paths as time rolls by.  Different strokes for
different folks though.

But if you can share your motives for changes, and the
changes themselves, then we can consider rolling them into the framework if they
satisfy general concerns.

Best,

Steven

Re: [flexcoders] change to mm.cfg setup in FP9?

2006-07-05 Thread Paul BH

yeppers - my mm.cfg file is at $HOMEDRIVE\$HOMEPATH - ie :\Documents and

On 7/5/06, Matt Horn <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

the only thing I can think of is the location of the mm.cfg file. what
do you mean by "root of my user folder"?

It should be in the directory specified by a combination of the
HOMEDRIVE/HOMEPATH environment variables (to see their values, open a
command prompt and type "set").

on windows xp, the default should be something like c:\Documents and
Settings\username\, which I suspect you mean, but I just wanted to be
sure. On Win NT, though, it's typically just c:\

[flexcoders] CF Wizard problem - Validators trigger required on fields with required="false"

2006-07-05 Thread Nick Collins

I am kind of using this wizard as a jumping off point, and have run into something of a problem. If I put validators on any of the fields to make sure they're formatted properly, even if I had set the fields to required="false" it forces you to input something into the field... how can I change this so that a null value won't trigger this?

[flexcoders] Using compc and localization

2006-07-05 Thread Jimmy
Hi,

Using compc to create a SWC. No problem all working.

Now I want to specify the location where compc can look for locale
info. In my config life I specify the following:

 c:/opt/sfc

But when I run it, I get this error:

Do I have to specify it some other way?

[flexcoders] Convert XML to Array(Collection)

2006-07-05 Thread Michael van Leest
Hi,

I need to display XML data in a datagrid, but using the XML directly as
data provider doesn't work.
Is there a easy way to convert a XML Object to an Array or
ArrayCollection?? Or do I need to loop over the nodes and "manual"
create a Array for the datagrid?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks, Michael

[flexcoders] Re: Beta 3 WebService Result

2006-07-05 Thread someguy7_7
Mine have type="s:string" as well. I also have a field called
totalresults that is at the same level as the items which is an
integer and seems to be fine. I am able to reference that using
lastResult.totalresults. The strings for category and categoryid are
the ones I am having problems with.

Re: [flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-05 Thread JesterXL

First, you CAN pass ValueObjects via Java and
PHP.  Java via OpenAMF, and PHP via AMFPHP.  ColdFusion just now has
the edge.

Second, Remoting as we refer to it, allows you
to:
1. call back-end services like you'd call
regular methods
2. pass class objects instead of vanilla data
(like Java POJO's), or XML or URL params for simple string / value pairs.
Strong typing for server communication... pimp!
3. allow better communication between you, the
client developer, and the back-end developer on "what" you are sending
eachother
4. pass the data in binary

So, myCFC.doStuff ( somePersonVO );.  If you
are sending a "Person Class" to some method, then the back-end guy knows exactly
what you are really sending him.  Same when he says to you, "Yeah, it'll
return a list of PersonVO's."  That means, you'll get an array full of
Person ValueObject class instances.  Finally, "usually", binary AMF
communications is smaller than regular AJAX XML, WebService, and HTTP
posts.

Dave Wolf from Cynergy systems will have
contentions with that 4th point, mainly because his tests with WebServices seems
to have renderered good results in 1.5.  Flash Player 9, however, has
greatly improved upon AMF's size via AMF3 encoding, so it'd be good to hear if
he has any new tests.

Subject: [flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

I started my quest to explore Flex
rather recently; I never did much with v1.5, mostly because the cost involved to
launch any commercial solution created with it. Now, with 2.0 it’s pretty
exciting to see everything that is now, rather easily (and inexpensively!),
possible to do.

But one thing I’m not quite clear on
yet: what is the difference, or benefit from, between basic remoting as is
possible with PHP/CF/ASP.NET, and the extended interaction with ColdFusion which
makes it possible to “pass actual instances of Actionscript Classes and have
them map directly into a CFC Instances – and vice versa” (a quote from Tim
Buntel’s blog)?

Thanks for any
insights!

[flexcoders] Solved - " Security error accessing url " Error

2006-07-05 Thread supertodda
Hello,

If you receive an error such as the one below when you upload your
code to the server, one possible reason may be that you are accessing
your flex app via http and the web service may be running on https
(SSL). You can solve this by running your main code on https as well.
Another clue could be found with the crossdomin.xml file, which I'm
not sure is still relevant with flex builder 2 (somebody more
knowledgeable can maybe contribute). Details on this can be found here:

I am
trying to use flashtype fonts, which involves embedding the font in a swf and
then importing the font from a swf into flex.

[flexcoders] ColdFusion vs. PHP as the back-end

2006-07-05 Thread Ville Walveranta

I started my quest to explore Flex rather recently; I never
did much with v1.5, mostly because the cost involved to launch any commercial
solution created with it. Now, with 2.0 it’s pretty exciting to see everything
that is now, rather easily (and inexpensively!), possible to do.

But one thing I’m not quite clear on yet: what is the
difference, or benefit from, between basic remoting as is possible with PHP/CF/ASP.NET,
and the extended interaction with ColdFusion which makes it possible to “pass
actual instances of Actionscript Classes and have them map directly into a CFC
Instances – and vice versa” (a quote from Tim Buntel’s blog)?

Thanks for any insights!

Ville

[flexcoders] XML prefix in MXML

2006-07-05 Thread Pottavathini, Sathish
How do i reference an attribute of an XML that has prefixes for an attribute of
MX XML?

For example, my response is something like this...

http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml";
xmlns:a="http://www.SomeDomain.com/a";>

I want to use 'a:label' as labelField on my Tree object. I did not find a way
to do this. Any ideas?

I added this prefix to my dataProvider XML object.

Sometimes when I'm in a debugging

is irritating because the debugger seems to slow down the more variables are

Anyone else have this problem?
Anyone know how to fix it?

RE: [flexcoders] anyone out there in eclipse land?

2006-07-05 Thread Carson Hager

These are common coding errors. The first one normally
indicates that you are trying to bind to a variable that has not been described
as bindable. You do this with a directive about the
declaration.

[Bindable]
public var myString:String = "my
string";

The second error indicates you have attempted to reference
an object that has not been created yet.  This is often a timing
issue.

I've run into a situation where I want to re-issue a call to a jsp via an
HTTPService with the same set of parameters. (It's a query to a db
essentially, with the params specifying the WHERE clause of the SQL).
The problem comes when I try and re-issue the HTTPService with the same
parameters in that the jsp does NOT get called, and I simply get a cached
result from the previous HTTPService call. Is there a way to
cache/uncache these results so I don't have to add a guaranteed unique dummy
variable as a parameter (currently using a timestamp as a
workaround?

Hello
Flexcoders;

Sometimes when I’m in a debugging
session, one or more variables in the Variables windows refuses to close. If I
click “-“ next to the row it closes, but then immediately opens up again. This
is irritating because the debugger seems to slow down the more variables are
open for inspection.

Anyone else have this problem?
Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.
Tobias.

I am having the exact same problem in Firefox.  I must set
WMode=Opaque for IFRames to work but that makes Shift+Tab not work correctly
throughout the rest of the application.  This is not the case for

Well, so let me clear. If you are talking about the *Data Management*
part of FDS that is fine. We just don't (yet) support the ability for
CFML code to "call up" to Flex, which is obviously a bit simpler when
you are part of the same VM/web app. We do fully support Flex
"calling down" to us to manage the Data Set.

But if you are talking about the *Messaging* feature of FDS, then
ColdFusion would most definitely meet your needs using the Flex
Messaging Gateway. You can publish and subscribe to a Flex destination.

If you use the htmlText property of the
textArea, you can use a subset of html tags, including the   tag.  The
href attribute can be a url as usual, or it can be “actionscript:myFunction()”
(maybe actionscript:parent.myFunction()) I haven’t done this in 2.0 yet
so I don’t have a full example.

preface this by saying that we have only begun the planning phases of the next
release(s), so many of these answers will be incomplete until we've had some
  more time (and sleep).
  Q: Is
there going to be a Flex Builder release for the Mac? A:
  Yes
  Q: Why
wasn't it released with the Windows version? A: We began by developing
Flex Builder for both Mac and Windows at the same time. However during
development we ran into a number of issues that were specific to OS X and
needed to be addressed in Eclipse itself. Fixing those issues would have meant
delaying the overall schedule, so we decided to focus on finishing the Windows
release before returning to the Mac in a follow-up. In the meantime the
Eclipse community has been working on Eclipse 3.2 which fixes a number of the
issues we ran into earlier. This makes the likelihood of a timely Mac release
that much better, and we're looking forward to continuing to improve Eclipse
  on the Mac.
  Q: When
will Flex Builder for the Mac be available?A: We are still in our planning
phases but we are hoping to have a public beta on Labs this year and the
production release early next year. One can imagine a particular event in
October where we'd be thrilled if we could launch the beta, but we simply
don't know our timelines yet. We can say that a whole lot of Flex Builder
engineers just received shiny new toys to help in this pursuit, while Product
Management received nothing. Not that Product Management is
  jealous.
  Q: If I
buy Flex Builder for Windows can I transfer that license to the Mac when it
comes out?A: Honestly we're not sure yet, we still need to figure this
out. We'll need another few weeks to answer this, hopefully before the trial
  expires.
  Q: Will
Flex Builder for Mac run on PPC, Intel, or both?A: We're very excited
about the new Intel-based Macs (at least the engineers who received them are,
PM is still not jealous) and at minimum we will be supporting that platform.
We'd be interested in getting your feedback on the importance of supporting
PPC given how quickly the Intel is getting adopted. Feel free to leave
  feedback here.
  Q: What
about Flash Player 9 on the Intel for Mac?A: You can grab a beta version
  of that Player here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/public_beta
  Q: What
do I do in the meantime if I have a Mac?A: Download and use the free SDK.
A number of developers have come up with workflows for building Flex
applications using the Mac; we'll try to put together a more comprehensive
list of them in the ne

So what is the equal to a hashtable for flex? Basically I am looking

An arraycollection is a start but not exactly. Also it would be nice
if it is searchable.

THanks in advance for the info.

Re: [flexcoders] Custom Context Menus

2006-07-05 Thread Carlos Rovira

Hi David,I think that most people, when reach Flash ContextMenu feature, don't find what they'd expect to find for various reasons (most to less annoying ;)):* The most annoying is the two menu items nobody can't remove. "Settings..." and "About Flash Player x". Please can't you think in other way to put that Flash Player functionality?, I'm sure there's other solutions you smart people could implement.
*ContextMenu looks ugly and relys on operating system, so the application's look and feel could broken due to changes in SO (for example in Windows, set the enviroment to remove all animations and promote the performance over graphics).
*We can't use icons and nested menus.*I find a bug in ContextMenu regarding diferent behaviours in IE and Firefox.(I submit it in the Adobe's bug page). The problem is that when I click outside the contextmenu and inside a MovieClip with some click handler attached, in Firefox I only have to do 1 click to hide the menu and execute the handler. In IE, first click removes the context menu, second click exec the function handler attached to the MC.
*Sometimes the behaviour is a bit tricky. For example with items like
COPY, CUT and PASTE, we must to append " &" to be able to use our
own handlers to override functionality.*If I have a MC as a cursor, and I point a MovieClip with a context menu attached, I can't show the menu since the cursor is always between the MC and the hiden mouse pointer, so I can't use a cursor if I want to use a context menu in a particular moment.
These are the problems I found working with ContextMenus, clients ask questions regarding this issues, and we only can say "we can't do nothing about this", but why?, wha's the reason?.I submit a couple of times bugs and wishes in Adobe's wish and bug form report, but seems that ContextMenu is the same in FP9.
Hope Flash Player Team could brings a new usable and beautiful Context Menu in Flash Player 10 ;).Best,C.On 7/5/06, David Mendels

The context menus
are probably a special case, as they are quite obviously rendered by the OS.
Windows has context icons and submenus, but do older Mac and Linux versions
have these features? I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing not every
targeted OS has these. It's a critical goal that flash works consistently
across all platforms. In a few cases like this it means going with the
lowest common denominator.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Beta 3 WebService Result

2006-07-05 Thread Kelly Birr
The only difference I can see between your WSDL and mine is that mine has
type="s:string" in the simple string elements. I've looked through my
services and have found type="tns:whatever" in some places and flex does
interpret those as more complex types.

I can only assume this is what's happening to you. If you have control over
your WSDL you may try type="s:string". I had to do something similar in my
.NET web services to get the WSDL to read type="s:string" instead of
type="s:dateTime" for date/time values so Flex would leave them as strings
and not convert them to Date objects and mess up the time zone.

Our webservices are written in J2EE 1.5 with Axis. I can get the specific
version of Axis if you think it matters.

Here is part of wsdl that pertains to the question. Sorry about the

Sathish! It’s been a while since we
worked together at our old company Cybrant. I guess it’s a small software
world and we’ve crossed paths again.

Anyways, since Deepa is out of the office
for a bit, I’ll see if I can help.  From the code you have provided,
try to change the mouseOut and mouseOver events to itemRollOver and itemRollOut
which are of type ListEvent. Then, in your setItemIndex function, I changed it
to:

private function setItemIndex(e:ListEvent)
: void

{

    selectedTreeItemIndex =
TreeItemRenderer(e.itemRenderer).listData.rowIndex;

    Alert.show("Selected
Tree Index: " + selectedTreeItemIndex);

}

This should get you the item that the user
last moused over.

I tried using mouseEvent.target and it's

  mouseOver="setItemIndex(event)"
  mouseOut="clearItemIndex(event)"
  itemClose="onTreeNodeClose(event)"
  itemOpen="onTreeNodeOpen(event)"

private var selectedTreeItemIndex
:int = -1;

private function
clearItemIndex(e:MouseEvent) : void
{
 selectedTreeItemIndex = -1;
}

private function setItemIndex(e:MouseEvent)

{
 selectedTreeItemIndex =

Well, good news and bad news. Normally, the event object properties
on the ContextMenuEvent would help you accomplish what you’re asking for
in a cinch. The mouseTarget property on a ContextMenuEvent contains a reference
to the display list object which the user was over when the context menu was
invoked. In most list-classes, like DataGrid, the mouseTarget is the specific
renderer the user right-clicked over. This is perfect, because the renderer
contains a lot of information that allows you to figure out where the user
invoked the context menu. For example, off a DataGridItemRenderer object, you
can access the listData property which contains the index of the row the user
right-clicked on (listData is a BaseListData object which has the property,
rowIndex). Then you’d just set your DataGrid’s selectedIndex to
rowIndex and voila – the row the user right-clicked over is selected.

Unfortunately, there is a bug that does not allow this to work for
Tree. The bug was deferred for the 2.0 release because it was found late in the
development cycle. When a ContextMenu is invoked over a Tree, ContextMenuEvent.mouseTarget
is not the TreeItemRenderer instance that the user was hovering over. Instead,
it’s the generic container for the TreeItemRenderer. This does not give
us any useful information.

There is a workaround, albeit a kludgy workaround, that you could
try. In your ContextMenuEvent handler, you could add an event listener for the
MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER event. Your MOUSE_OVER handler could then work off the
information contained in the MouseEvent.target property and (hopefully that is
a reference to the TreeItemRenderer) you can figure out the rowIndex like I
mentioned above and set the selectedIndex of the Tree accordingly. Then, be
sure to remove the event listener at the end of your MOUSE_OVER handler so that
the Tree is not constantly spewing MOUSE_OVER events.

Whew – that was a mouthful but hopefully you followed and you’ll be
able to live with the bug and or implement the workaround. I can’t make
any promises but I’d like to see this bug fixed so I’ll definitely
add your usecase to the bug to give it some momentum.

HTH –

[flexcoders] Re: Tomcat and jdk version for Flex

2006-07-05 Thread Mike_Robinson_98
Be sure to use a recent version of 5.5 as version 5.5.7 had a severe
memory leak. Personally, I am using 5.5.17 and it is very stable in
that regard.

[flexcoders] HTTPService (jsp, specifically) getting cached?

2006-07-05 Thread djbrown_rotonews
I've run into a situation where I want to re-issue a call to a jsp via
an HTTPService with the same set of parameters. (It's a query to a db
essentially, with the params specifying the WHERE clause of the SQL).
The problem comes when I try and re-issue the HTTPService with the
same parameters in that the jsp does NOT get called, and I simply get
a cached result from the previous HTTPService call.

Is there a way to cache/uncache these results so I don't have to add a
guaranteed unique dummy variable as a parameter (currently using a
timestamp as a workaround?

Re: [flexcoders] Compiling Flex--thank you!

2006-07-05 Thread Nick Collins

I'd wait on the MacBook a little while longer... they're updating them as soon as Intel starts shipping their Core 2 Duo laptop processors and it'll be alot faster. Plus I've heard rumors they'll be changing the case design at that point to, so here's to hoping they don't use another aluminum case that interferes with the WiFi. :-)

Flex
Builder on the Mac

There have been many
questions over the last few days as to Adobe's intentions for releasing Flex
Builder on the Mac. As part of our continuing effort at transparency here is a
short list of questions and attempts at answers. Let us preface this by saying
that we have only begun the planning phases of the next release(s), so many of
these answers will be incomplete until we've had some more time (and sleep).

Q: Is there going to
be a Flex Builder release for the Mac?
A: Yes

Q: Why wasn't it
released with the Windows version?
A: We began by developing Flex Builder for both Mac and Windows at the same
time. However during development we ran into a number of issues that were
specific to OS X and needed to be addressed in Eclipse itself. Fixing those
issues would have meant delaying the overall schedule, so we decided to focus
on finishing the Windows release before returning to the Mac in a follow-up. In
the meantime the Eclipse community has been working on Eclipse 3.2 which fixes
a number of the issues we ran into earlier. This makes the likelihood of a
timely Mac release that much better, and we're looking forward to continuing to
improve Eclipse on the Mac.

Q: When will Flex
Builder for the Mac be available?
A: We are still in our planning phases but we are hoping to have a public beta
on Labs this year and the production release early next year. One can imagine a
particular event in October where we'd be thrilled if we could launch the beta,
but we simply don't know our timelines yet. We can say that a whole lot of Flex
Builder engineers just received shiny new toys to help in this pursuit, while
Product Management received nothing. Not that Product Management is jealous.

Q: If I buy Flex
Builder for Windows can I transfer that license to the Mac when it comes out?
A: Honestly we're not sure yet, we still need to figure this out. We'll need
another few weeks to answer this, hopefully before the trial expires.

Q: Will Flex Builder
for Mac run on PPC, Intel, or both?
A: We're very excited about the new Intel-based Macs (at least the engineers
who received them are, PM is still not jealous) and at minimum we will be
supporting that platform. We'd be interested in getting your feedback on the
importance of supporting PPC given how quickly the Intel is getting adopted.
Feel free to leave feedback here.

Q: What about Flash
Player 9 on the Intel for Mac?
A: You can grab a beta version of that Player here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/public_beta

Q: What do I do in
the meantime if I have a Mac?
A: Download and use the free SDK. A number of developers have come up with
workflows for building Flex applications using the Mac; we'll try to put
together a more comprehensive list of them in the next few days.

Just keep in mind that Adobe has not announced any plans to release
a Mac version. They did remark that if they do release a Mac version (and we
all assume they will), it won't be until the next major revision of Flex
Builder. (Does that mean Flex Builder 3? If so, that's 16+ months away!)

[flexcoders] Re: Shift-tabbing not working in Firefox with wmode=opaque

2006-07-05 Thread Scott Romer
An additional problem that I noticed... droplists don't seem to use
the correct key functions when wmode=opaque. For instance, the
default key combination of using "Ctrl-[Down Arrow]" should open up a
droplist on a combobox. When wmode=opaque, Ctrl doesn't seem to be
recognized, but the Alt key seems to open the dropdown?

I'm confused at why this has an impact.

I'm going to try to convince team that we should not need
wmode=opaque, but would still be nice to have a different work around.

Thanks for any ideas.

Speaking of these wizards, how can we modify the templates they are
generated from?
How difficult would it be to make them scriptable or add the ability
for them to act on mulitple tables?

We use this configuration consistantly. It is quite stable and proven
so in production. You will find, like with all products, that some

[flexcoders] Flex 2: Debugger annoyance

2006-07-05 Thread Tobias Patton

Hello Flexcoders;

Sometimes when I’m in a debugging session, one or more
variables in the Variables windows refuses to close. If I click “-“
next to the row it closes, but then immediately opens up again. This is
irritating because the debugger seems to slow down the more variables are open
for inspection.

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: any disadvantages to using FDS + CF vs. FDS + Java?

2006-07-05 Thread Tom Bray

Thanks, Tom.  The primary responsibility of our server-side logic is to push data out to clients (updating user lists, sending validated chat messages, etc.), so it sounds like that's a deal-breaker for CF.  :(-Tom

Just wanted to jump in here and say that using ColdFusion does have
some advantages over Java. For one thing, not having to write Java
code to do JDBC manipulation of your data is a big one. We believe
that for RAD development, CFML (especially given the Flex Builder
wizards we provide) will get you up and running much quicker.

A CF solution should scale very well, as you are offloading the
processing of the DB operations on to the CF server. You do pay a
small price in moving the result sets from CF to Flex over a network
if CF and Flex are on different machines.

We fully support the change object model of writing Assemblers as
ColdFusion Components. The one thing we do not support writing in
CFML is the 'server push' API which allows a Java application running
in the Flex web application to 'push' changes to the data in to the
Flex managed result sets. We are currently evaluating supporting this
in a future release.

I hope this (biased) information helps.

  That

in that case. If they are allowing custom menus then i fail to understand why
they don't allow submenus. The main reason people write their programs in flex

The context menus
are probably a special case, as they are quite obviously rendered by the OS.
Windows has context icons and submenus, but do older Mac and Linux versions
have these features? I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing not every
targeted OS has these. It’s a critical goal that flash works consistently
across all platforms. In a few cases like this it means going with the
lowest common denominator.

[flexcoders] "falling between" items when using itemRollOver (DataGrid)

2006-07-05 Thread djbrown_rotonews
I'm using the itemRollOver event mechanism to display additional info
about items in my DataGrid, and it appears that you can "fall between"
items with the mouse (ie, I'll be at Row 1 Column 5 and move the mouse
a tick down and it goes to Row 2 Column 0, and then back to Row 2
Column 5 after another slight move).

Is there a way to programmaticaly prevent this behavior? The end
result is I get some "info flicker" as the event triggers some info
based on Row 2, Column 0 very quickly before proceeding to the next
event target.

[flexcoders] FDS on CFMX configuration problems

2006-07-05 Thread Tom Bray

When I first started working with FDS, I used the standalone version with integrated JRun and had FB configured to launch FDS and direct its logging to the output pane in FB.  I was happy. Now, I'm trying to configure FDS on top of CFMX and haven't had much success.  I used the instructions below at this link:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=4f079a4d&pss=rss_flex_4f079a4d.  It would be very helpful if Adobe would expand upon those instructions with the steps for getting the sample apps up and running.
Also, the instructions for setting up debugging (http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flex_Enterprise_Services:Debugging) need to be updated for the final release of FDS and I'd love to see a similar document for setting up debugging with FDS on CFMX.
In the meantime, I'm having errors that I don't know how to get additional information on.  I'm trying to get the notes sample app running, and I get this error:[RPC Fault faultString="Send failed" faultCode="
Client.Error.MessageSend" faultDetail="Channel.Connect.Failed error NetConnection.Call.Failed: HTTP: Status 500"]Subscribing to the notes destination works, but sending a message doesn't.  I obviously need more details to diagnose the problem, so an explanation of how to see that logging information would be awesome.
Thanks,Tom

[flexcoders] Re: any disadvantages to using FDS + CF vs. FDS + Java?

2006-07-05 Thread Tom Jordahl

>

[flexcoders] Flex 2 - Sending complex objects to WebService

2006-07-05 Thread slangeberg

I'm having trouble sending ValueObjects through WebServices (to ColdFusion).

When I try to send the ValueObject itself, flex only sends 'null' for the value. Same if I try to send them in an array.

Is there some method to serialize these objects so that the WSDL knows what I'm supposed to be sending?

Thanks,
: : ) Scott

[flexcoders] Shift-tabbing not working in Firefox with wmode=opaque

2006-07-05 Thread Scott Romer
I have wmode=opaque in my Object/Embed tag. When I tab through the
dataGrid everything works fine. However, when I try to shift-tab (to
tab backwards), it only tabs forwards (as if the shift key is not
being held down).

This seems to only be reproducible on FireFox (have not tried other
Mozilla browsers). This is not a bug on Internet Explorer...
(Tested on Windows XP)

It sounds similar to someone else's issue about the mouse scrollWheel
not working. (I'm guessing on the correlation here though)

Any ideas?

RE: [flexcoders] Menu - handle sub-menu clicks

2006-07-05 Thread Joan Tan

Dmitry,

ITEM_CLICK should certainly be dispatched
for sub-menu items, if that sub-menu item is not the parent of another menu.
This event is dispatched whenever a final selection is made causing the menu to
close.

Are you wanting to capture this event for
a menu item that opens another submenu ?  If so, you can probably capture the
MENU_SHOW event and then get the id of that item. The MENU_SHOW, MENU_HIDE, ITEM_ROLL_OUT
and ITEM_ROLL_OVER all will allow you to get information about particular menu
items. Hopefully, one of these will help you accomplish what you want to do.

Joan

Subject: [flexcoders] Menu -
handle sub-menu clicks

Hello all,

There is a need to handle MenuEvent.ITEM_CLICK for sub-menus of the
standard Menu component. Basically I need this for a case when there
is a huge amount of data to show in the menu and click on sub-menu
would show a new menu from the current level. So event must contain at
least id of current menu item. And seems like only ITEM_CLICK contains
this info. But ITEM_CLICK is not dispatched for sub-menu clicks.

Thank you in advance,

Dmitry.

Re: [flexcoders] Any way to tell a hbox to be only as wide as is needed for contents

2006-07-05 Thread hank williams

Thanks steve. That works great for components, but doesnt seem to work for datagrid columns. In that situation when I set the column width to nothing the column got bigger than when it was set manually. Ideally I would like to be able to make the column the width of the header text for the column.
HankOn 7/5/06, Steve Webster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hank,I have a variety of situations where I want a box to be just big enough to hold its contents, and to just resize other stuff to accomodate. One of the most important reasons for this is localization. I want to support lots of languages and I dont want to have to hard code widths to get things to look the way I want. This is also true for datagrid, where I would like certain columns to be exactly what they need to be to accomodate the headertext length and other to just grow or shrink to use the remaining available space.
Set width to NaN (if using ActionScript) or remove the width attribute (if in MXML view).Cheers,Steve-- Steve Webster

Well, its almost that easy. For flex 2 at least, you need to also
install the JOTM for tomcat to work.Below is a description of how to
do it that is better than the one in the manual.
Hank1. un "gzip" the file http://debian-sf.objectweb.org/projects/ jotm 2. go to the lib directory in the resulting
uncompressed folder3. place all the files in this folder in the
  $CATALINA_HOME/shared/lib directory except:   a.
  log4j.jar   b. commons-cli.jar   c.
jotm_iiop_stubs.jar    NOTE: $CATALINA_HOME is just your tomcat
  folder.
  4. Create a new file called context.xml in
:$CATALINA_HOME/webapps//META-INF5. Place the following in the file:

    factory  org.objectweb.jotm.UserTransactionFactory
   jotm.timeout
  60
    NOTE:
In the first line above, the word "samples" listed twice, should be whatever
the  name of your webapp is. Using "samples" allows you to run the
samples application that comes with FDS.
or if you have Tomcat 5.5 or greater you may just place the following in

RE: [flexcoders] Excel, Flex & Database

2006-07-05 Thread Lance Linder

Darron, thanks for the links to these
examples! It is great to see some work done to import .xls files.

Is there any more recent work on this or
source to go with these examples? I would like to play around with this idea
and any source code would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Yes, it's possible for Flex to load Microsoft Excel
data. However, it's
not easy. You have to write a custom parser for the .xls file format.
You can pull the raw binary data in via URLLoader setting it's
dataFormat to DataFormat.BINARY, and then parse the .xls data into
something usable for the Flex client.

See Jim Cheng's discussion on it here:
http://www.psalterego.com/2006/05/17/parsing-excel-files-with-actionscript-30/

Simple demo here: http://dev.psalterego.com/xls/ExcelParser.html

Cool, thanks man. Yeah, concerning the callbacks (2), just
intrested to know success or failure (no data), so the view could

Re: [flexcoders] Any way to tell a hbox to be only as wide as is needed for contents

2006-07-05 Thread Steve Webster

Hank,I have a variety of situations where I want a box to be just big enough to hold its contents, and to just resize other stuff to accomodate. One of the most important reasons for this is localization. I want to support lots of languages and I dont want to have to hard code widths to get things to look the way I want. This is also true for datagrid, where I would like certain columns to be exactly what they need to be to accomodate the headertext length and other to just grow or shrink to use the remaining available space.
Set width to NaN (if using ActionScript) or remove the width attribute (if in MXML view).Cheers,Steve-- Steve Webster

[flexcoders] Flex release version: XML attribute string too long

2006-07-05 Thread Jonathan Bezuidenhout

Hi,I have XML that worked fine up to Beta 3 - the one attribute contains a long string - not exceptionally long - but not short - too lazy to count the number of characters. The released version of Flex does not seem to parse this string anymore, and tells me the following:
TypeError: Error #1095: XML parser failure: Unterminated attribute.    at Main/::_XML1_i()    at Main$iinit()    at mx.managers::SystemManager/create()    at mx.managers::SystemManager/::initializeTopLevelWindow
()    at mx.managers::SystemManager/::frameEndHandler()I guess it is unable to see the end of the string.  Maybe this is a player problem with the XML.Anyone else seen this and any ideas how to allow long strings?
ThanksJonathan
