Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Builder complaint
Did you read the thread... I had backups. It's a bug. When you import any other project into eclipse or Flex builder it doesn't delete files from your project as part of the import. The reason I bring it up isn't because I'm a baby, it's because I have a legitimate concern. Does this behavior happen if I import a project into my workspace that was created with the same version? I don't think just saying, oh keep backups, use source control or whatever is a solution, an application shouldn't be deleting files without telling you. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Builder complaint
You are right, I am sorry. I've been under a lot of stress. I had committed myself to a project utilizing papervision that also depends on code that has yet to be realized in any adequate form and unfortunately is beyond the scope of the project yet I need it to get it done. Little things set me off and my true self comes out when it shouldn't (I am in fact evil). And since I have not given or received anything of value from this group in a while, emphasis on given. I'm going to pull out for a while. It's a distraction that you don't need. Re: [flexcoders] Cannot embed Flash9 symbols
Ok, pretty much exactly the code I have in place. Three things I see wrong here.. 1) The symbol that loads is way messed up and does not at all match when displays in Flash. 2) When I publish the swf from the flash on my machine without changes it no longer works. 3) You've missed what I'm really trying to do. I need dynamic assets not static assets to be loaded from the SWF. I have no idea what the problem is for 1, and I don't care at this point, but it could be an indication of what the real issue is for me. I'm going to try a new clean and reinstall of everything Flash and see if anything starts working again. I'm not sure if it's related but I did notice odd things after a software update from Apple, I'm on a mac by the way, an update the the flash player was included that broke a lot of stuff for me. I had to reinstall the Flash Debug Player. Somebody at Adobe needs to talk to apple about this, it's the second update in a row that has caused me headaches. For the 3rd issue, it should work if I can get the Flex Component kit to work properly. Sherif, thanks for trying. I think that you thought it was more of a newbie question, but I was really just looking for validation that my SWF was junk, not that my methods were faulty. Re: [flexcoders] do you need CS Degree to get a job?
My experiences have been similar. I do consulting and get most of my work by having good connections. I don't have a degree at all. I went to school just never finished it, never needed to, and frankly don't see any advantage to doing so. I do occasionally get requests for my resume, and I hide the education bit at the bottom. Re: [flexcoders] The best java backend
We use XFire with Spring... we haven't moved to CXF, which is what Xfire has become, but I'd imagine that it is just as easy to use as xfire was with Spring. Re: [flexcoders] WITH construction ?
You just illustrated why it's reducing readability. You have to read a lot more code to understand what is happening in the with statement. In your example you show x = 20, but where is x? is it on the object or is it in the function scope or is it in the parent object scope? This is why I think with should not be used. In javascript it improved performance slightly in some unique cases, but I don't think it's helpful in AS3. The only benefit I see for it is reduced typing, but that's just lazy in my opinion. Please type it out, it will help you out in the long run. I think the only time you should not state the scope of an assignment like that (ie x=20) is when the scope is local like in a function. Please use this whenever possible as well, even when you are the only one looking at your code. Oh and just because other languages have it does not make it a good idea. Lingo uses for string concatenation, is that a good idea? Paul On Nov 6, 2007, at 2:45 AM, Samuel Colak wrote: Paul, apologies however languages such as C# include such a directive already - its not reducing readability at all - in reality I'm wondering if this is remotely possible in Flex. The issue I'm wondering about is that if you wrote the code below var object:Object = new Object(); With (object) { x = 20; trace(trap the app in debug here); } and placed a breakpoint on the trace line - you'll note several things - 1) 'x' is defined as a variable of type Number (no var declaration which I didn't think possible) and outside of the scope of 'object' 2) object does not have a variable 'x'. How is it shown that 'x' is part of 'object' rather than an external variable ? In C#, the With statement is enacted in that properties of a object declared in the With construct are referenced in the following manner. With (object) { .x = 20; } Note the '.' ! Re: [flexcoders] PDF rendering in Flex
I think that is probably your best bet at this point. It is possible to read a PDF in flex, but rendering it is a bit tricky. First if it's compressed you'll have to unzip parts of it. Once you have it decoded you could execute the drawing commands on a UIComponent and display the text roughly the same, but I'm not sure about images. If they are JPEG I suppose you could feed it to a SWFLoader, but if it's Tiff, I don't think you can do that. But if you know that the PDF is not going to have images or just simple images and you keep them simple then I think it could be possible to build the component to display it. Re: [flexcoders] Wrapper .svn copies BUG!
My FB rejected 1.0.x. I do have it installed on my Mac version and I find that it kind of sucks, but it's not entirely their fault. I cannot use it for the most part because it seems to do everything based on the root repository and I don't have access to that. I only have access to certain projects in the repository (I'm a consultant and they don't trust me). As a result I find subclipse to be kind of useless, plus it doesn't solve my problem. Part of it also is that I have gotten so used to TortiseSVN that I find the alternatives to be quite lacking. There is nothing worthwhile on the Mac for SVN, I've resorted to the terminal in fact. Re: [flexcoders] Date oddities *** SOLVED ***
Now it makes sense, because our back end, also in java, sends all timestamps in UTC. On Oct 30, 2007, at 7:34 PM, Scott Melby wrote: Whew, took me a while but I was able to get to the bottom of this date stuff. The problem I was seeing was caused by my Java back end not correctly recognizing the time zone information from VISTA. This caused it to return timestamps in milliseconds GMT (instead of the usual adjusted for local time). A simple upgrade of the JDK (was running 1.5_09, upgraded to 1.5_13) fixed that issue. So, it turns out that if your back end is returning time in GMT (also referred to as UTC) then your flex code will always need to adjust accordingly (as indicated by Paul below). If you are fine with your server returning local time (intranet app, etc) then no adjustment is necessary in the Flex code. Thanks Scott Scott Melby wrote: Paul - Thanks for the response. Re: [flexcoders] crossdomain.xml... real or not-so-real security?
The use case I've heard that makes sense to me that does provide security is this. Say you have a bunch of FLVs stored on your server and you let some people access those from their site. And at some point you discover that someone has been abusing that privilege and racking up huge bandwidth charges for you. So you add the cross domain and deny access to certain sites. Then you can still stream them out, but the friend that posted it to slashdot is no longer able to. Make sense? It's not a lot of security in my opinion, but it works. There are ways around it, like proxies, but then those people will be using the bandwidth themselves as well. Those layers were a big stumbling block for me, but once I understood it I don't have any problems with it. I also agree that better examples would be useful/helpful and if Adobe were to want to hire an experienced developer to write some Do you know if there are any plans in the future of the language to add overloading? What about meta-data, could there be a tag you could add to those calls that would instruct the compiler to do a type check other than what the function signature says? Alex Harui wrote: Better examples will always be useful. However, I think another stumbling block for you and others is that there are different layers out there. The flash.* packages represent a layer, and the mx.* packages represent a layer on top of that. The flash.* layer doesn’t really know about the mx.* layer and thus does not reference it in its examples. The mx.* layer expects you to use mx.* entities and therefore doesn’t point out that there are rules for mixing in-between layers. And the language doesn’t support overloading so the APIs can’t help you out at compile time. I’m old enough that I’ve seen this layering in Windows file APIs so maybe I’m more willing to roll with it. There are different file API layers in Windows/DOS and you can’t mix those most of the time either. -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com Yahoo! Yes, in this case ClipTile is a Container, most of my itemRenderers are Containers. If they are not containers then I generally don't have anything to set on them. Alex Harui wrote: What is ClipTile? Re: [flexcoders] Flex app security on IIS
This is a bug that I have reported before. The upload request does not share the session with the other requests on the system. ie, cookies are not sent that have not been set by any other upload requests. In some cases I've been able to use URL-Rewriting to share the session, but it's a pain. My solution has been to allow unsecured uploads by supplying a token to the request. What I do it have another request that is on the authenticated session request a token, we use a UUID generated by the server. We pass that in as a parameter on the upload request and that server side handler will then map that request to the correct session. We use tokens because we can expire them after a single use. We had trouble with url-rewriting because by default all the servers we were deploying on did not have that enabled by default and some clients just didn't want to support that. Really url-rewriting for session management should do it for you. Paul carl_steinhilber wrote: I have a Flex2 app that sits on a secure intranet running IIS. One of the functions uploads a file from client-side to the server. I create the URLRequest to an .asp page receiver, set up params, and execute a .upload on a FileReference using that URLRequest. But for some reason, even though I've authenticated against the server to access the app, I get a second authentication challenge/response when I hit the upload button. I've added a cross-domain.xml with cross-domain-policy allow-access-from domain=* / /cross-domain-policy even though I don't think I should have to since the .asp page is on the exact same domain as the app. I've even modified the index template for the Flex project to use allowScriptAccess=always. But I still get this second IIS login prompt. If I authenticate again via this second dialog, the upload executes properly, so I know the logic and architecture is correct. Is there a way to pass the user's authenticated info with the URLRequest/FileReference.upload()? I've poured through the docs and can't find anything. Or is there something else I'm missing? Thanks in advance, -Carl

Re: [flexcoders] Detecting optional elements in XML
Use e4x, most e4x expressions return an XMLList. Then check if the result has a length greater than 0. Some of the alternatives are actually more work computationally, as they do the test for existence and then run the query later if it exists. Here is an example of where I use it. var previewsElement:XMLList = xml.previews; if(previewsElement.length()0) { //do stuff here } In some cases I just get the list and iterate over it, then if the list is empty it just moves on. So, my function has several things it will be doing inside of the true portion of the if statement, and then whether or not it was true or false, continue with other processes. Re: [flexcoders] e4x question
I have been getting caught up with with one for a few weeks now, I keep forgetting to specify the namespace. I actually think this is a bug, but I haven't checked the Ecma requirements yet. In XPATH and the like if you don't specify a namespace in the query it will return all elements regardless of namespace. This only seems to be an issue in the ecma world, and it seems wrong to me. I suppose it could be argued that this helps us be better programmers and specifying namespaces is better in the long run. But in the example that you guys were working with it was the xml namespace, that should just be handled... just my opinion, but a lot of time was wasted on this and in my opinion it's a bug, possibly a language level bug. Re: [flexcoders] e4x question
Alright, I've read the specs, it's not a bug but in fact it's by design... a design choice that I would not have made. The deal is if the namespace is not specified then for elements it matches on the default namespace, but for attributes it matches on no namespace... makes not sense to me. What also doesn't make sense is that attributes don't have a namespace unless declared per attribute. They do not inherit from the element, which is what XML Schema defines, but since Schema really doesn't come into play here this can be expected. It's all totally bizzare. Paul Paul deCoursey wrote: I have been getting caught up with with one for a few weeks now, I keep forgetting to specify the namespace. I will have to explore that option. --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Paul deCoursey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have this issue when calling a WebService operation. If I have in the schema an object that extends string the operation will fail and crash teh browser. The idea is to send an object like this (represented in xml): collection uuid=1481091239084023r metadata name=TitleThis is the title/meatadata ... /collection If I send the object with everything except the metadata it works fine. If I add the metadata it fails. This works from other clients without any issues. I have tried the flex hotfix 3, but that has other issues, it fails to load imported schema references correctly. Has anyone had experience with something like this? I am working on building a simple example that I can post that includes the WSDL, the flex client that fails and a java war that provides the soap service. Once I have that done I will post it, but I'd like to know before hand if anyone has experienced this. Or if there is anyone that has a complexType that extends string but does not fail, I'd be interested in comparing notes there as well. Thanks Paul
Re: [flexcoders] Does Adobe have plans for OplenGL Primitives or not?
That would be cool, but I can't see that happening. I'd imagine that adding any OpenGL support would add a significant amount of bloat to the player. I think that it has become fairly universal, I don't see why they couldn't make a go for it. but then there is always papervision, and the Flash renderer is fairly fast. Robert Thompson wrote: I don't want to have to cater to Microlust Corp. of Redmond, but I see no other alternative if Adobe doesn't step up and make some plans to compete with SilverLight (took them almost 10 years to come up with something decent). It seems that for a long time Macromedia was using Shockwave for Director as the alternative, but it's old, heavy and convoluted --- we need a good addition of OpenGL Primitives to the Flash Plug-in...Adobe, please ???
Re: [flexcoders] its possible convert (not split) String to Array ?
JSON, what you need is a JSON parser. I believe there is one on google code... http://code.google.com/p/as3corelib/ Paul Marcio Napoli wrote: Hey All, If i have one String that represents Array of Arrays (same sintax). Re: [flexcoders] Want to export data to and Excel File
NavigateToUrl should work. This is really more of a general Web Development question though. The real work would need to be done on the server in some sort of web application. You need to set the header of the response to the correct mimetype so that the browser can decide what to do with the file. You can also send headers to will instruct what to use for a filename. I can't really provide much more guidance without more details on what you are using server side, and that would really bring us out of scope for this list. Paul essuark wrote: Hello all, I have some simple data that I wish to export to Excel from my flex application. Basically I want to click a button and have the 'Save As' dialog on the browser appear, so the data is dynamic. This needs to be contained in the swf and not access a file somewhere on a server, and since there isn't file, I am not sure if can use NavigatetoURL. In short I wish to send or stream xml data to; I guess, another browser. So again, any ideas on how to send simple xml data, like MsgHello/Msg and have the browser's save as dialog show up so the user can save it on their harddrive? Thanks Ralph
Re: [flexcoders] The future of Flex IDE's
Troy Gilbert wrote: I largely prefer many of Visual Studio's (particularly 2005) features to FlexBuilder, though do like some of FlexBuilder/ Eclipse's features as well. Of course, the features I like most about Visual Studio don't seem to be intrinsic to the way it does things, more just that they don't exist in Flex Builder. For example, Visual Studio does some incredible Intellisense for C#... it basically suggests appropriate text (keywords, variable names, types, functions, etc.) with every keystroke. For folks with a lame memory like myself, it's great... it's also very conducive to using long, descriptive names for things since you don't end up having to type it all out constantly. I totally agree with that one... FB/Eclipse really falls short in that regard. It's also *very* smart about automatic formating of the code, and you can define all the rules that it applies as you type. In addition, there are some tools built into VS that need to be added to Flex (and sound like they may be to a degree with the data wizards in Flex 3), stuff like automatically generating classes from XML schemas, providing visual designers for schemas, etc. I'm working on a Class generator from XML Schemas right now. I have a fairly good start, still working out some bugs. I expect to have a beta release available in the next few weeks. It's built right now as an ANT task. Paul
Re: [flexcoders] Re: Parameter passing !! I am shocked
When you set it to null it removes the reference the current scope or context, and when you pass it into that function it is in a different scope from this. had you done this.obj = null, then it would have been completely de-referenced and eligible for garbage collection. --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Ravi Kumar Gummadi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all How does flex handle parameter passing, as I understand, it is by Pass by reference. But I was having some memory leaks and playing around a few tweaks and the following snippet completely took me by surprise. // CODE START script public var obj:Object; createObject(){ obj = {test:1234,test2:5678}; } checkObject(objParam:Object){ trace(objParam); } deleteObject(objParam:Object){ objParam = null; // I tried objParam = undefined as well } /script mx:Button id=create click=createObject() / mx:Button id=check click=checkObject(obj) / mx:Button id=delete click=deleteObject(obj) / // END Now 1. I created the object by click on create 2. Then check for the existence of it (Traces [object object].. This is fine) 3. Then clicked delete. 4. Then again click on check... (Traces [object] [object] ! But since its passed by reference it should be NULL) Somewhere I read that it setting to NULL changes the reference count, does that mean in each of my function I need to set all the params to null at the end of it so that refercne count is reduced and raady for garbage collection!! ( That doesn't quite a sense !!) Regards Ravi

[flexcoders] Metadata question
Does anybody know if it's possible to define our own metadata and access that info at runtime? For example, I'm writing a XML-Object binding framework and I'd like to add some metadata to some generated classes that I can access at runtime. The data I'd like to add is info about how the object should be read or written to and from XML. Paul
