Per my knowledge for Array and XMLList data binding won't detect data changes.
I suggest you use XMLListCollection and the warning will go away.

When I use an HTTPService result as an ArrayCollection, certain
nodes

will be set as a single item or an array depending on the number of

items in the node. Is there a simple way to always force a node to an

array regardless of how many items there are?

PW and Jeff,

PW, you and I seem to be in the same boat. I am trying to fight off

the people who were flex skeptics to start with. Not being able to

write data back makes the whole thing look pretty amateur and confirms

people's belief that the technology isn't ready - which given this

experience it clearly isn't. The baby is definitely at risk of being

thrown out with the bath water. It stands in our company simply

because I have the final call as Technical Director (CTO if you are in

the US).

I am a huge flex advocate and really doing my best to evangelise on

the topic. What's more I think that the bridge to operational data is

the most profound leap forward for flash, it takes it out of the world

of gimicks and into the world of real business applications.

Jeff, you and your and team deserve huge credit for that vision and

excellent execution.

However, much as it pains me to say it, the bottom line is that the

hibernate middle tier provided does not work, as PW and I (and a host

of other people on various forums) have found. I know that I can

re-write the whole thing myself and will probably have to, but when

introducing new technologies it is unfortunately all about initial

perception.

I have made a career of doing this sort of thing myself and I have

seen excellent projects fail to fly because of low initial quality,

even though we fixed them immediately, the damage was done because

people's impression was that they were flaky. I'm sure you know it is

hard to get back from that first impression and the word of mouth that

springs from it. Once it becomes entrenched that opinion becomes fact

and you are irrevocably lost. If I were Adobe I would be a little

worried about the tone of the posts I am seeing about integration with

Hibernate.

The Hibernate Assembler is very important and I would really hate to

see that happen to it. The corollary is very unfortunate. That

little bit of technology transform the boardroom conversation about

FDS. Suddenly the cost of the licensing of FDS becomes justifiable

against the dev cost savings because we can just plug into the ORM.

Having made that justification myself it is very difficult for me now

to go back and say, by the way I also have to incur the dev costs.

When asked why? I have to confess that the Adobe code doesn't work and

we don't know when we're getting a fix. For the Flex/Flash skeptics

in the room that's a god send.

For me it is a complete nightmare. It is hard for me to separate the

cost of FDS licenses (which is almost prohibitively large) against the

cost of dev. I would urge Jeff and Co to get the Hibernate Assembler

code watertight and shipping asap. If I can be of any assistance I

will gladly offer my services.

If either of you would like to contact me, post a reply and I will

happily give you my details.

  Hey Jeff, just curious if you've got

[flexcoders] HTTP services / Error handler

2007-02-26 Thread Valy Sivec
Hello,

I was using HTTP services for quite some time and I'm not very happy with the
way I handle the server side errors. I was wondering if you have a better idea
that you can share with me.

Here are the solutions I used:

1. check exception on the server side and return a XML representation of the
error ( message, code ). I kinda don't like this approach, because SPRING does
a nice job uncheking all the exceptions and adding back the exception check
seems odd to me. I'm looking into adding a java interceptor using AOP, still
working on it...

2. Presented a generic error message on the UI - coded onFault method of the
HTTP server. This is not ideal, our users will like to see much more specific
messages related with the backend error, somehow onFault method seems unusable
due to Flashplayer limitations.

I was looking into useProxy config of the HTTP service but didn't see
anything that might help me. Am I missing something?

Can you share with me how did you handle the server side errors on the UI side?

Forgot to mention that I'm not using FDS, I use the Flex framework with HTTP
services ( xml over http ).

Thanks,
Valy Sivec

[flexcoders] Generate Flex Forms on the fly

2007-02-14 Thread Valy Sivec
I need to be able build some data entry screen(s) on the fly based on form
definition stored in the db. Any suggestions?.

The requirement is to have customized forms for different clients without
changing the screen with any new request. It's more like storing client profile
in the db and build the screen based on his preferences.

Any feedback is welcome.

Hi Valy

That's perfect scense of use, the selectedItem claims to use to select some
values into the array of binded component and in other hands selectedIndex it's
to select the first item of this component. You don't have to do much more if
you can do this into a function then you will need to use the creationComplete
Property.

Best.

Re: [flexcoders] How to handle server side errors on the UI

2007-01-15 Thread Valy Sivec
I did the same way, but I feel uncomfortable coupling the server side with UI
message. In addition to that frameworks like Spring, Hibernate promote runtime
errors that makes faultString is kinda useless, or I don't know how to use
it

It looks to me that Adobe needs to reconsider the way they handle the server
side errors on their side and provide the UI programmers a way to identify the
error codes on the client side.

I'd like to hear flexcoders opinion regarding this or how did they handle this
in their applications.

Thanks,

Subject: RE: [flexcoders] How to handle server side errors on the UI

I catch all server-side exceptions on the server, and write them into the xml I
return to the client. The client resulthandler looks at the xml to determine
if it is good data or an error and responds appropriately. For the few
occasions where the server app itself errors, I use a fault handler.

The problem with faultString is that if the server errors with a 500, the
browser does not pass the full error informtion to the player. It is possible
to cause the server to send a 200 instead of a 500, and you can then access the
fault detail. How this is done depends on the server.

Hello flexcoders,

I'm working on a project that uses HTTP services and I'm having difficulties
catching the server side error on the client. In fact, I'd like to be able
translate the error code from the back-end to a meaningfull message to the
client for certain error codes.

It looks that faultString doesn't help me much. How do you guys deal with the
server side errors on the client, if you want to have custom error messages
depending on the error code?

Thanks,

[flexcoders] How to handle server side errors on the UI

2007-01-12 Thread Valy Sivec
Hello flexcoders,

I'm working on a project that uses HTTP services and I'm having difficulties
catching the server side error on the client. In fact, I'd like to be able
translate the error code from the back-end to a meaningfull message to the
client for certain error codes.

It looks that faultString doesn't help me much. How do you guys deal with the
server side errors on the client, if you want to have custom error messages
depending on the error code?

Thanks,
Valy Sivec

Re: [flexcoders] Re: file download doesnt work?

2006-12-13 Thread Valy Sivec
I looked over the code I have for the download. It seems weird that the
FileReference class doesn't work as it should and probably somebody for Adobe
can shed some light here.

Here is the code I have used:

   var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(download.action);

request.method = URLRequestMethod.GET;
  var
params:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
  params.id = REPLACE_ME;
  request.data = params;
  navigateToURL(request, _self);

HTH,
Valy

Dimitrios,

This should work for you:
import flash.net.*;

var
url:String;
url=http://localhost: 7001/billing/ servlet/FileSvlt ?operation=;

url +=DOWNLOAD fileId=2 ;

var
urlRequest:URLReque st = new
URLRequest(url) ;
sendToURL(urlReques t);

 Not Sure if this will work Dimitrios,
 But I seem to remember
having similar issues and reading somewhere
that the constructor of the Url
Request expected a url as a string.

 var req:URLRequest = new
URLRequest(http://localhost
http://localhost/ : 7001/billing/
servlet/FileSvlt ) ;
 req.method = URLRequestMethod. GET;

req.data = new URLVariables( operation= DOWNLOAD );

 fr.download( req

 I double checked some

working. Anyways, like I said,
not sure if it will help,
 You probably have already tried it.

Have you tried to call your servlet outside Flex?.

What do you use on the server side?. If you;re using java on the server side
you can call a method on the server side if your http controller is properly

Give us more detail with what you have on the backend, and you might want to
consider using resultFormat=e4x when you declare the HTTP service too.

I am not familiar with “XML-RPC”, but I suspect that the answer to your

Can you do an ordinary HTTPService call successfully?

This:
methodauthor.login/method
Looks suspicious. It is sending a querystring parameter that looks like this:
…?method=”author.login”….

Does the url target know how to handle that?

Subject: [flexcoders] XML-RPC

I have spent most of today googling and searching forums looking for
an answer to this and it's getting towards that time on a Friday so my
brain has given up.

Does Flex natively support XML-RPC? I found 1 or 2 examples of it
being used - one of them here:
http://tech. groups.yahoo. com/group/ flexcoders/ message/549
and when I have been able to get the example code to work (like the
above one) I have been unable to then get it to work with my own server.
So far each time I have tried I get an unknown method error.

One comment I found was that the webservice class would be better than
the HTTPService class. If so does anyone have an example?

The code I have used is this:

mx:HTTPService url={serverSetting s.xmlRPCstring}
method=GET id=service result=methodResul t(true,event)
fault=methodResult (false,event)
mx:request
methodauthor. login/method
Customer108 /Customer
Nameusername /Name
PasswordPassword /Password
/mx:request
/mx:HTTPService

I get the result function call firing but I can't see and data. When I
dig through all the variables in the debugger I eventually come across
a unknown method string that is returned by the server.

Can anyone help me with this or do I have to try and get a 3rd party
AS2 library to work with Flex instead?

Many Thanks

Giles

Re: [flexcoders] Re: itemrenderer trying to access variables in main application

2006-12-06 Thread Valy Sivec
It depends how you design your renderer. Ben's example is excelent and will
show you how to implement an item renderer fully decoupled. In case you have an
in-line renderer, you can use outerDocument.

Example

var myVar : String = Global var declared somewhere in your parent
application. and
from your renderer you can access it: outerDocument.myVar

Subject: [flexcoders] Re: itemrenderer trying to access variables in main

Hi Bill,

This is pretty simple to accomplish if you use ClassFactory to set up
your itemRenderers. You'll need to implement IFactory in your
itemRenderer class and then do something like this in the file where
your DataGrid lives:

[Bindable] private var myRenderer:ClassFac tory;
myRenderer = new ClassFactory( MyAwesomeRendere rClass);
myRenderer.properti es = {externalObject: mainApp,
externalPropertyNam e: buttonTwoEnabled };

Then inside your IR class (where you've also declared public vars with
the same names as in the properties object) you could bind the
button's enabled property to externalObject[ externalProperty Name].
This technique is explained in more detail here:
http://www.returnun defined.com/ 2006/11/creating -truly-reusable- renderers-
with-classfactor y/

Look at ArrayUtil.toArray method that trasforms an object to an array.

I'd think something like that would work:
var arrayCollection : ArrayCollection=  new ArrayCollection (
ArrayUtil.toArray(myListRequest. lastResult. records.record) );

Try something
like the following (I’m using result here instead of lastResult,
but see what works for you:

var acResults
: ArrayCollection;

if (myListRequest. lastResult. records.record
is ArrayCollection)

{

acResults = myListRequest. lastResult. records.record;

}

else

{

acResults = new ArrayCollection();

acResults.addItem(myListRequest. lastResult. records.record);

}

Alert.show(acResults.length. toString());

Thanks Steve for explaining exactly the root cause.

What method would you recommend to test if the

result is an array or an object ?

Steve Cox wrote:

 When a result contains only 1 object Flex converts it to an Object not

 an ArrayCollection. Therefore your

 myListRequest. lastResult. records.record is an object and won't
have the

 .length property. When you receive more than 1 record it will be an

 ArrayCollection of objects.

 You'll need to check the type of myListRequest. lastResult. records.record

 before you do any work with it.

 Hope that helps,

 Steve

 I use the following to get a count of the records returned by

 HTTPService request.

 myListRequest. lastResult. records.record. length;

 When theres only 1 the result is null ? Otherwise the count is fine

 whenever it is 2 or more. Is this the expected result ??

2006-11-08 Thread Valy Sivec

Hello flexcoders,

I'm working on the same issues for about a day without any luck. All the examples I've seen so far work correctly for TAB navigation but fail for mouse navigation and invalid cell will loose the focus. I might need a final validation before submit the form/grid data, but I'll do that as a last resort I'm still trying to find something because I suspect that I'm missing something is this a BUG?. Can somebody from Adobe confirm this?

Editable Datagrid is one of the most apealing components, and I'm kinda surprised to see this issue... but again, it might be me.

Thanks,
Valy

Hi Valy,

In Flex 2, there was an issue with the reason property of
the DataGridEvent and ListEvent class not being set properly when you change
cell focus. Which example is this? The page you mention takes me to a page with
no example on it.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Using SpringBeanAdapter instead of FDS

2006-09-21 Thread Valy Sivec

Jeff, thanks for the info. I was under the impression that Adobe opened the HibernateAdapter code. Am I wrong?Can you point me where I can find it?Thanks again,ValyJeff Vroom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: First off, on the original question about SpringBeanAdapter, if you can use FDS I recommend that you check
 out the Spring Flex Factory on the Adobe component exchange:http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm#loc=en_usview=sn610viewName=Adobe%20Exchangeavm=1With this component, it
 just takes a few lines of XML to allow a Flex client to call a method on a spring component. For the hibernate stuff, if you use a remote object to access hibernate you run into the challenges mentioned below when hibernate is using lazy loading of properties. If however, you use Flex Data Management Services we solve those problems for you. We also supply the Java source code for the hibernate assembler with FDS so you can see how we got around the lazy loading and “duplicate instance” problems with hibernate. Basically we fetch all properties in the hibernate object before the session is closed (unless that property is marked
 as lazy in the FDMS configuration in which case only the id of that object must be available).JeffFrom: [EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com] On Behalf Of laidezmon Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 10:18 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Re: Using SpringBeanAdapter instead of FDSI am developing an app that uses the remote object tied to a java/spring/hybernate app like you describe. This was a legacy
 app already written with a jsf front end, and for the most part, the flex stuff has gone over the business logic, pretty well. There have been a couple bumps in the road, but that could have something to do with the way I am implementing it. One of the things I have noticed, is you are not able to lazy load your hybernate objects, so an object with one to many or many to many relationships will error out. You must pass back to flex fully completed java objects when it asks for them. Also when you pass an object to flex, then edit it, and pass it back, I was getting hybernate duplicate object errors. The reason for this is that hybernate is still maintaining the instance of that object, and if you make a change to it, based on id, then it considers them as two objects of the same ID. you can either merge the two of them, delete the hybernate instance, or create a new object based off the flex object being passed, then
 set the hybernate object params to the flex object params using the getters and setters. So its not completely seamless, but it shows some promise. Course I could be doing it totally wrong too. I know this way works but it might not be a best practice. This to me seems an area of flex sorely in need of better documentation. There are no tutorials or walkthroughs of anything beyond simple objects being passed to and from java, and usually not having anything to do with spring and hybernate connections. At least if there are some tutorials on passing complex objects (meaning an object with at least another object embedded in it) back and forth using spring/hybernate in either remote object or dataservices I have not found it and would love to see it. --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED]ups.com, "dreuimar" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey everyone,

I sure you can. See the item renderer section from the Flex Developer Guide.Below is just a small example I put together. You just need to add model.xml at your convenience. RE: [flexcoders] RE: Session Timeout Problem

2006-06-15 Thread Valy Sivec

If I remember well, there are some details about this issue in flexdoc. Pretty much follows Carson's explanation. Also, if you extend your search you'll find examples posted on this forum.Regards,ValyCarson Hager [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:That's the kicker with Form auth in J2EE. Theproblem is when the session times out and another request is made from aremoteobject, httpservice, etc., the server returns the form

What we typically do isimplement SSO across web apps on the server and have one web app with the swf,html, login page etc. locked down under form auth but then house all webservices in a separate web app which uses basic auth. Because it uses basicauth, if the server does not reauth automatically, it returns a valid http 401rather than a bunch of html with an accompanying 200. The Flash Player candeal with the 401 and you can catch this exception and deal with it yourselfto then redirect the page to a secure resource which then causes your formauth to come up again. RE: [flexcoders] The End, A: YES, YES Is Adobe a reasonable business partner?

2006-06-09 Thread Valy Sivec

Robert, I'm kinda reluctant when I see people that know absolute truth and see all sorts of conspiracy around them.I believe M$ did a lot to this industry ( I'm not even a .net programmer ) in terms of innovation and software development and at this moment Adobe(Macromedia) still have to grow to be at that level. I'm not saying Flex is not a great product, just can't say Flex is best when still need workarounds for a lot of things. BTW, some workarounds are presented as "patterns" or "features", look no further than "singleton" pattern. Flex has great potential, but it will be interesting to see if Adobe will be able to create a great product. Historically speaking, JRunis/was a decentproduct but never GREATHope Flex will became a GREAT product along other products. In case Flex will the ONLY GREAT product, then we''ll see Adobe acting as M$ does now ( remember Flex pricing scheme). I'm done with this posting and hope that
 flexcodders won't be offended in anyway, it wasn't my intention.Best regards,ValyRobert Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay Valy, let's end it here...I did not start the commentary.The response was from a message to someone asking if Adobe is a reasonable business partner -- a pretty serious accusation and there's plenty of room for response to this accusation; and that's all.Although I agree commentary should not be going on a lot, that was a serious implying sort of suggestion -- that they are not, when in fact Adobe and the Macromedia
 developers are great business partners. I've been involved in Flash since 1997 so I have a lot of history here.Microsoft is not a reasonble business partner and that's the only thing I added, and mark my words they intend to use DirectX and Direct3D (something I myself programmed in the past) and Sparkle to minimize Flash. And then have a viewer on the Macintosh. Why all this? Because FLEX 2.0 is very powerful at Applications.I've seen evidence of this regarding Lotus Notes that I don't even think Ray Ozzie who is there now has seen, and words perhaps like "kill the enemy" and "club them over the head with the Windows desktop" are words that you should think about -- I'm not saying anything beyond that, but I know how they compete and I've done my research.And if you don't know about the upcoming battle re: Sparkle and MS's plan to at the very least minimize Flash as a true
 cross-platform client server solution on to of the very same Java they were proven to have licensed and then hacked [and those are very deceitful motives], then you should read up my friend and not continue your own commentary when the issue was already answered.I did not start it. Maybe you can stop it and relax a littleread a little about the issues that will be coming upand they willand I'm sure you know I'm rooting for Adobe. They are everything MS is not -- look at the inability of MS to come out with even  the least Graphics program; or the way graphcs are dealt with in Word Sad. Finally we have a great competitor in the market who's not guilty of breaking the law.Uh...kind regards...and consider perhaps my eyes have seen things yours have not...then go back to the guy who asked the question.  in one of your MXML script blocks to see if it fixes the issue Matt describes?   import org.ifm.model.PhoneNumber;   private var dep:PhoneNumber;

I tried to dispatch an event registered with the Cairngorm controller from a titlewindow but without much luck.The following code doesn't work used from the TitleWindow but works when called from the main panel that creates the TitleWindow. // dispatch event var evnt : SaveIndividualEvent = new SaveIndividualEvent(model._individual); dispatchEvent( evnt );The event is registered with the controller just fine but it looks that cannot dispatch the event from the TitleWindow. Am I missing something here?. Had the same scenario in Flex 1.5 and didn't have any issue with it.Any suggestions?Thanks,Valy

RE: [flexcoders] FDS Hibernate

2006-04-17 Thread Valy Sivec

My understanding is that with FDS at this moment you shouldn't write any DAO code and just the mapping files should suffice. On the other hand, are Hibernate features that I don't see how to implement them with the current Hibernate adapter; mightbe just me... Anyway, I have chosen to use Java-JDO with Hibernate Spring and feel more comfortable about fixing the bugs in the code I can open than having the bug in the Hibernate adapter. In addition to that historicaly speaking, I haven't seen any BUG fixes or patches to the Flex 1.5 and having the bugs fixed only via Flex Support seems to me a little bit odd. That makes me even more reluctant to adopt Hibernate Adapter. I hope that in the future Adobe will releasethe bug fixes in patches available for everybody.Thanks, Valy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yep, just curious what functionality Hibernate adapter provides, using of java-dao adapter should work fine with Hibernate-based applicationstho ;) Regards,Alex -Original Message-From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] OnBehalf Of Matt ChotinSent: Monday, April 17, 2006 2:35 AMTo: flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [flexcoders] FDS HibernateI don’t know that I agree with your premise that open source is the only wayto understand a technology to adopt it, but agree that the documentation isbehind the implementations. However, I have been in the business for over 20 years, so I can at least claim to have seen a lot, even if I'm wrong in my conclusions :)I have a couple of things to share -- both my own orientation as someone who wants to hire good people (we have openings), and my impression of general hiring practice in the US software engineering business.As far as my own hiring goes, knowledge of a specific technology ranks somewhere near the bottom of my list. That doesn't
 make it unimportant -- learning new stuff takes valuable time -- but the ability to learn is more significant to me, and the ability to think about problems abstractly (not only in terms of technology XYZ's approach) is more significant to me. So is the ability to have fun, and the ability to communicate :). I build products, so I am generally not looking for a contractor to come in and fix a problem, but for a long-term hire. Technology changes very rapidly, and passing a certification exam today doesn't mean a candidate can adapt to shifting circumstances.Out there in the bigger world, what I see is that certification counts the most in:- jobs with high turnover (e.g. system administration)- jobs with inherently short duration (consulting)- jobs where management is not well-informed enough to make a good decision (non-engineering companies)- jobs at a very junior level (one can count on getting something out of
 an unknown new hire until the next technology shift).For a senior long-term hire, it doesn't really count for much relative to job experience. Theoretically certification could be important in arcane specialties, say, natural language recognition, but academia tends to take its place there; certification programs instead aim at shorter-haul achievements like learning Flex or J2EE . .. .jNick Weekes wrote: not at all. my point is that a good dev should be aware of all technologies, and not the one he is most comfortable with. *From:* flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] *On Behalf Of *Tolulope Olonade *Sent:* 28 February 2006 15:48 *To:* flexcoders@yahoogroups.com *Subject:* RE: [flexcoders] Re: RIA Certified

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Java Pojo to AS pojo with ant

2005-11-21 Thread Valy Sivec
I'm not an EJB advocate, but I'm glad to see that with
EJB3.0 specs the data persistence technology is more
mature and reliable than it was few years ago.
Hibernate EJB3.0 added great deal of value to J2EE
comunity and I would think is wrong to disregard EJB
(s). I would suggest you guys to look at the Microsoft
ADO.NET packages and you'll appreciate EJB3.0 and
Hibernate even more...

In conclusion, EJB might not be suitable for your
project and in many ways EJB have been used improperly
but that doesn't mean it's not a great technology...

The great thing is that we have the option to
choose...and with open source projects even more... go
and fix the issue in the code if you have to...

My appologies to the Flexcoders; this not being a Flex
related message.

Regards,
Valy Sivec

 Lets be honest. I'm a guy that used to the Open
 Source Frameworks because the guys developing them
 are honest. They want only money for support, while
 the monsters that vote for EJB want to sell their
 IDEs and their application servers that supports
 that crappy heavy technology.

 It is not honest to tell that
 By far the current most popular form of persistence
 frameworks is the EJB 2.0 standard
 look at the any recruiting site to see what
 technologies are most wanted to be familiar by Java
 developers. EJB has about 15% and as far as I know
 that 15% are support of the old projects. Actually
 now the only thing that remains from J2EE is
 servlets and JMS for everything else we have Spring,
 Hibernate and other frameworks.

 Look at the any Java community site, EJB is dead.
 EJB2.0 is the worst technology I've ever known and
 even Sun now recognize it. And however EJB 3.0 is
 pretty like Hibernate I'd better use Hibernate with
 Spring than it. The same features but I can run it
 on Tomcat that is much liter than any EJB3.0
 compliant app server.

 Spring Hibernate and AOP makes EJB dead!!! And great
 thanx to them. I do not need XDoclet any more, I can
 run unittests without Cactus I can deploy my
 application anywhere I do not need crappy EJB
 deployment descriptors, and I'm happy with it.

   I think we all have to realize that all of our
 declarations on this topic are relative to our own
 experiences. That being said, if you use simple
 procedural JSPs, and servlets to expose DB backends
 using JDBC, then you might say EJB is dead. On the
 other side of the coin, if you do large scale,
 enterprise wide development, EJB is a life saver.
 Take persistence frameworks as an example...what are
 the alternatives outside of proprietary,
 non-standard COTS products?

   By far the current most popular form of
 persistence frameworks is the EJB 2.0 standard. This
 allows Container Managed Persistence, in which the
 application server manages the persistence for the
 developers, allowing them to concentrate on coding
 business logic instead of implementation specifics.
  Prior to EJB 2.0, the specification mandated remote
 interfaces and had no way to express relationships
 between objects. Both of these problems harmed
 performance, but they were fixed in EJB 2.0. Today
 CMP ships with all J2EE EJB 2.0 compliant
 application servers, thus it has a huge advantage
 over the rest of the marketplace due to the
 ubiquitous nature of the platform.

   Truthfully, there are many analysts whom (after
 reviewing the initial CMP and EJB spec) developed
 their own forms of persistence frameworks, and 2.0
 did little to persuade them that things had changed
 radically for them to migrate away from their
 ingrained technologies.

   Thankfully the World of IT developers realized the
 deficiencies of previous persistence models and/or
 the hard sell in introducing a proprietary in house
 persistence platform to (rightfully) wary IT
 management groups at conservative publicly traded
 firms. What is required is an official java
 standard for persistence, and that is exactly what
 JSR 220 a part of the Java community process for
 standardization is. The Java consortium feels that
 by getting the entire Java community behind one
 standard Java persistence API, they will simplify
 the now-confusing, expensive and risky development
 of J2EE and J2SE applications using data
 persistence. During the specification member voting
 in August of this year, all present firms (Apple,
 Apache, IBM, BEA, JBOSS, HP, SAP, Oracle et all)
 voted on the specification with such epiphanic
 comments such as:

   ?We believe JSR-220 will have great impact on the
 Java enterprise eco-system and will give
 productivity back to the developers.? ?JBOSS

  ComboBox contains a List, so you can get the
 reference of list using
  'dropDown' property of ComboBox and then set List
 properties on it, as
  shown above.

 Correction: There's no dropDown property. There's
 an internal
 __dropdown variable that refers to the List of the
 ComboBox.  Access
 that.

[flexcoders] Combobox : Display tooltip scrolling over the elements

2005-08-10 Thread Valy Sivec
Hello Flexcoders,

I ran into this issue today: I have a combobox
populated with some data. The labels length is quite
long, so I would like to have a tooltip displayed when
scrolling the mouse over an item from the list. I saw
showDataTips, showScrollTips for the list control
but not for the ComboBox.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Valy

 No, because you're running CF/Flex using a
 connector.  If you're running
 CF/Flex integrated, your top level MXML files would
 reside right in your

 You can change this location by editing

  I'll be able to get to

RE: [flexcoders] Re: If I buy a flex license can I host other peoples apps on the license?

2005-07-19 Thread Valy Sivec

It's kinda childish to think that for a billion dollar company 60k-120k in Flex's fees isstill abargain... Don't know whysome people ignore the fact that Flex is just only a component ( presentation layer ) and in addition to Flex you have to invest in J2EE or .NET infrastructure.

Imagine having Websphere/.NET, Oracle/Db2/SQLServer and on top of this Flex. How much it would cost a company for all of this? Also, let's not forget about the training costs, consultants you need to have in case you have a large project and run into trouble

So, don't get me wrong... I like Flex and I think is a good product, but the licence's fees are too high in my opinion. In addition to a high price, the product is still in early stages, performance wise are still things to improve

RE: [flexcoders] Re: If I buy a flex license can I host other peoples apps on the license?

2005-07-19 Thread Valy Sivec

Many times companies have a portfolio of apps that are sold to their clients. Due to some usability things, if you have a client that likes Flex interfaces or accepted an application written in Flex because it looks cool or is just different... going back to straight HTML/JSP/ASPapp will be a though sell... So that's why many times even if Flex is not the best solution, cost wise, you have to stick with it in case you want to keep the client happy... It's a though situation and because of the higher costs of software, the end product is becoming more expensive and implicit hard to sell So one one part, the client seems happy with the app but he cannot climb the cost barrier... and you get the "No, thank you" message

I think that is a matter of time for people to realize that accepting Flex adds a some significant costs to the existing architecture. In case you manage to sell the product than you're happy, but it depends for how long you can do that, when management first move all the time is cut the IT costs I recommend you the book"World is flat" - for anyone that still believe that IT cost is not a problem

ValyJeff Steiner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

It also depends upon the type of information in the RIA that your team builds. For example, if you are spending a ton of money for a 3-5 tier setup where everything is load balanced, but the app is only going to be used a few thousand times a week, you are probably not going to be saving that much. If you are building an application where you can show that seconds saved off of a single transaction saves the company hundreds of thousands of dollars a day you can probably get away with a bit more – probably.

Just one of those things where a company may not be wiling to spend $10 to save $1000.

Re: [flexcoders] Cairngorm .99 Hibernate 3

2005-06-08 Thread Valy Sivec
Rich, thanks for sharing with us the sample!.

Quick question for you: what tools have you used to
generate the Hibernate XML mappings and the
JAVA(POJO-DAO) code?. Is the tool compatible with
Hibernate 3? or you manually made it Hibernate 3
compatible, replacing the Hibernate 2 with v.3?

The example is great!.

I see that you initialize Hibernate session in the
remote object's constructor, and the RO is declared
stateless... Isn't that too expensive? Just my 2
cents

Not related with this message topic, I do believe that
having all the data model replicated in AS is
overwhelming... Changes to the model will have to
propagate to the AS model/view... which is not cool...
Flex Builder should offer a syncronize tool between
Java model and AS model... to easy somehow the pain of
dealing with this

I read that JBoss people turned their eyes to RIA, and
I hope they will move Lazlo to the next level as they
did with Tomcat, EJBhopefully... It will be better
for MM people to have some sort of competition and
relax the prices a little bit... :))

[flexcoders] When do I need to Recompile mxml files?

2005-05-24 Thread Valy Sivec

Hello flexcoders,
I have a flex project and want to precompile the mxml files. I was wondering if I need to re-compile the mxml files in case for example I fix a bug in the business logic of a remote object method.. ( not method signature changes ).
So, when do I need to recompile the mxml files due to changes? I know that when any of the "as"/mxml/flex-config.xml has changed than need to recompile... How about server side classes? Should the mxml care if the backend changed?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Any changes to MXML associated AS files would require recompilation. Any changes to backend logic (POJO, EJB) doesn't require flex app recompilation, unless you have use Model/XML tag to fetch data from backend.

Data of Model/XML tags get compiled in flex application, so you need to take care this situation..

mx:Model source="http://www.myserver.com/getCategories.jsp" / or mx:XML source="http://www.myserver.com/getCategories.jsp"/

getCategories.jsp returns xml file So if getCategories.jsp is changed, you should recompile the flex app also...

Does it make sense?

[flexcoders] HTTP service context.root

2005-05-12 Thread Valy Sivec

Hello,
In a flex application I have defined a servlet as HTTP service ( see the conf. below ). In case the "production-mode" is set
to false in the flex-config.xml everything works fine. Wanted to change the production-mode param to true, then I get an error
"HTTP Service Fault". I woudn't want to hardcode the context root in the flex-config file.

production-mode= true and
service name="myService"
url{context.root}/MyServlet/url
/service Won't work.
Any ideas?
So production-mode = true and
service name="myService"
url/myappcontext/MyServlet/url
/service works.

I wasn't able to fix this. Is there any way to
configure a HTTP service with {context.root} in
flex-config.xml and production-mode = true? ( see the
config below ).

If production mode=false the apps works, if set the
production mode to true the app won't work. Keep the
production mode = true and replace the  {context.root}

application works.

Very confusing Am I missing something?

Re: [flexcoders] mx;Loader/ memory leaking/ any way to programatically clear the memory/browser crashes

2005-05-10 Thread Valy Sivec

Hello,

I'm experiencing odd behaviour from a flex app that uses mx:Loader to load some views. Under heavy load, loading/unloading a mxml file via mx:Loader puts the browser on his knees and finally crashes without logging anything in the log. I've monitored the RAM usage by the IE process and it looks that memory usage raise around 50Mb and then the browser dies...

I'm wondering if adding this code on the "unload" event will help cleaning the memorybecause I'm suspecting some memory leaking...

var source = event.target;
for( i: Number = 0; i source.numChildren; i++ ){
source.destroyChildrenAt(i);
}

Any suggestions would be helpfull.
ValyValy Sivec [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Flex gurus,
I have this scenario: left page navigation with dynamic filter criteria and in the main screen I load sub-views via mx:loader tag. The user can make some real-time selections from the left page and as result I'll display on the right screen a different view via mx:Loader tag. Everything works fine, but from time to time the browser crashes... totally random, without being able to find a pattern in this behavior other than playing with the left navigation that load/re-load the right screen I'm wondering if the mx:Loader tag causes some memory leaking and if there is anything that I should know about it... I search the archive for some hints but no luck
Any suggestions are welcome...

2005-05-10 Thread Valy Sivec

Hello,

I've checked the archived email and saw some people having the same questions in regards with the way garbage collector works. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything that would help. Is there anyone out here that know how the GC works and what we need to know to avoid memory leaking... For example I'm not sure that loading/unloading am mxml via mx:Loader will ever free up the memory or will continue to add on top of the used memory..

I have the same question for view stacks...For a large app is it safe to group multiple screens under the same view stack or using separates applications would be the way to go

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Cairngorm Result Question

2005-05-05 Thread Valy Sivec

Iain,

I think the input parameter for the onResult will contain the actual result.

Try:

public function onResult(result : Object ) : Void
{var getInboxViewHelper = ViewLocator.getInstance().getViewHelper( "ControlView" );getInboxViewHelper.fillInbox(result);}

You might want to use mx.utils.ArrayUtil.toArray(result) to populate the dataProvider in case the result is not an array.

Also, you can use some mx.core.Application.alert('Your message') to trace your code, a method that I personally don't like

RE: [flexcoders] reset views fields values for a stackview panel

2005-04-16 Thread Valy Sivec

Hi Matt,

I tried distoryAllChildren for the viewStack but the
application has been put on his knees I got an
warning message from the player that a script is
causing some problems... don't remember the message...
I think I would like the approach you mention with the
binded model to the form elements and try clear the
model and disable/enable the validator.

Thanks for helping me out,
Valy

--- Matt Chotin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Basically I would give each screen a clear() method
 and then walk the
 ViewStack's children and call clear() on each. If
 you want you could have
 the fields on each screen bound to some model and
 then clear the fields
 within the model. If you have Validators set up
 though you'll need to be
 careful because the Validators might indicate that
 the form is invalid after
 it has been cleared. You'll need to disable the
 validators before clearing
 the fields and re-enable them after. I think we've
 discussed this in other
 flexcoders posts but I don't remember the subjects.

 Some people have taken the approach of actually
 destroying all the children
 and re-creating them, but that might be a little
 expensive for your
 situation.

 Exactly. I would like to use optimistic locking and

 the update_ts gets populated via database

  Subject: [flexcoders] Cairngorm framework question

  Guys,

  I'm using Cairngorm framework which is great but I
 ran into a
  issueand need some help I want to be able
 execute more than
  one commands as result of interacting with a UI
 element

  Scenario: Have a grid with Edit button underneath;
 Select a row from
  the grid and want to edit the record. When I
 submit the edit form I
  want to fire
  2 events like:

  EventBroadcaster.getInstance().broadcastEvent(
  updateAddress, addr );
  EventBroadcaster.getInstance().broadcastEvent(
  getPhysicalAddress, indi_id ); - refresh the
 data in the grid

  First, are the calls executed in this order all
 the time? and
  second... I wouldn't want to execute
 getPhysicalAddress  if the
  updateAddress
  fails

  Were you guys able to execute multiple commands in
 one call and sync
  them?

  Am I missing something?
  Thanks Valy
