Do the texture files _have_ to be in RGB(A) format?

Which first says that PNG is not supported, but then implies that it is. Does
anyone know whether plib will load PNG files as textures?
AFAIK, png is a compile-time dependency, and

As far as I understand it, OpenGL supports compressed RGB images _in_memory_.
That may well be, but plib uncompresses them anyway and lets ssgMakeMipMaps
run over the data. Compression and even different image formats shouldn't make
a difference

If *plib* can't read Melchior's better compression scheme, then there's
not too much point in doing it.
I didn't suggest to convert all images. And convert is almost as good as
my optimizer. But in any case: it is *of course* fully spec

Ok, sounds reasonable,

the tough part is we have texture submissions as
part of model submissions from a large variety of authors and sources so
it's hard to keep good format consistency.
Yes, I know. That's why I said: But paying a little more attention to SGI

But paying a little more attention to SGI images wouldn't hurt.
Here's a symptomatic example:
cvs: -rw-r- 1 m m 1049088 Jan 11 19:31 UC-up-down.rgb
recoded: -rw-r- 1 m m 32216 Jan 11 19:31 UC-up-down.rgb
That's only 3%
