And now a 'srtmchop' that process CGIAR geotiff files

( Demchop was for original GTOPO30 )

Geobase Canada provides a spec that helps understanding these filenames
(I've been there few years ago but don't remember the details).

Actually, in order to translate elevation raster into TerraGear work
directories you're required to have files in SRTM HGT format (for use
with 'hgtchop'). Development has started months ago to build a
'gdalchop' which, as the name says, is using the GDAL library to read
almost every elevation raster file format under the sun (including
HGT), thus serving as a much more versatile replacement for 'hgtchop'.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, this 'gdalchop' was never
released into the public and I'm unable to tell how long it takes until
it's ready for general consumption.
So, if you're in hurry, try to find HGT files or a tool that allows to
translate into HGT, otherwise let's see.

Cheers,
Martin.

[Flightgear-devel] Building Canadian Scenery

2009-03-13 Thread cullam Bruce-Lockhart
This questions is probably a little pre-mature, as I haven't actually been able
to compile Terra-gear yet on either Windows or Ubuntu - the various
instructions out there all seem to have links to other instructions for things
you need - and these are often out of date. Anyway, that's not my question. At
some point, I'll hopefully be able to build Terragear.

The big things I want to fix is the precision of the elevation model. We're
flying UAV's in Newfoundland, which means it's VERY rugged, and 1 km precission
simply doesn't cover it. STM1 data isn't available for Canada through the
websites quoted on the Terragear instructions. But I mannaged to find 30m
precission data, which should be perfect! The question then, is how I format
it.

The data I've gathered comes from:
http://geobase.ca/geobase/en/data/cded/description.html

Anyway, when I unpack it, the format is a .dem file. Actuall, it produces two
files of identical size called "001n10_0100_deme.dem" and
"001n10_0100_demw.dem". I know that the string of numbers is a refernece to the
position of this rectangle on the earth. But I'm not sure why there are two
files (this is from one rectangle - a single zip file). There's also an xml and
an html file, but those are just discriptions and information about the land
containted in the data.

This is essentially the information that Terragear wants for its DEM, but it's
not the file format that is works with. Has anyone used this data set before?
Does anyone know what I'll need to do to it to be able to hand it over to
Terragear to work with? I'm actually going to be building two of these
rectangles of data, but I just listed one here for asking the question. Thanks
for the help! (you guys are always so great about that for us stunned newbies!)

Torsten has already been pointing at the most relevant items. I'd say,
as long as you're 'efficient' in speaking English, the language should
be a no-brainer if everyone involed feels as being part of a 'team'.
Still, expect the majority of the people (booth staff as well as
visitors) to be Germans.

I think the most obvious 'requirement' is to have a certain insight
into the inner workings of FlightGear. While quite a few visitors feel
happy about simply performing a takeoff in a huge aircraft, other's
feel a lot more like understanding how different sub-parts of the
entire simulation interact.

Well, from my perspective this one _is_ the main mailing list - as it's
the sole one to which I'm subscribed :-)
Thus, I'll be unable to respond if anyone's going to post a question on
any other mailing list.

That's strange - you had the correct files and FlightGear should have created

OxygenXML, too. It's the only one I found/know, that runs on linux.

Once the schema for the FlightGear config file is created, it should not be to
much sweat to keep it in sync with the source. New elements don't show up
every week.
The time consuming task is building the schema. The JSBSim files follow some
very strict rules, while the FlightGear config files are - well, sometimes
quite flexible.

I do have the Seneca-base.xml file containing the lines you mention at
line 392. Also present is Aircraft/SenecaII/Systems/kcs55.nas containing
the line:
print( "KCS55 pictorial navigation system initialized" );
at line 395.
Will now attempt to delete and re-install the complete SenacaII
directory.
 time passes
"cvs up SenecaII" does nothing in the Aircraft directory.
nor does "cvs co SenecaII"
"cvs update -dP" refreshes the folder and reinstalls the SenecaII
directory (along with every other aircraft).

Aha! Now I see the "KCS55 pictorial navigation system initialized" and
switching to "slave" frees the giro and all is OK.

All this is very odd since I regularly do a CVS/SVN update on everything
including the data directory, as I did prior to opening this thread. I
am losing faith in CVS... sigh.
Thank you for your help.

Kind regards, Alasdair

While I would probably not use that myself, I'm all for it. The
question, however, is, if someone maintains that. XML file
structure changes all the time, but if those who make the changes
don't use the schemata, then they might also not update them.
They might not even have the tools installed or know/care about
how to use them. Outdated and wrong documentation can be worse
than no documentation at all. At the moment not even our actual
documentation is really fully up-to-date, and the files in
$FG_ROOT/Docs/ and ./docs-mini/ aren't synchronized. :-/

Just for the record, it works here.

You are very welcome to join the booth.
The last two years when I was at the FlightGear booth at LinuxTag, we had an
impressive setup of hardware to present FlightGear to the public. Check out
the wiki page
http://wiki.flightgear.org/index.php/Current_events
and you will find some links to pictures taken at the events. We did not have
any speakers in the conference area so far since nobody volunteered to
prepare and hold a presentation.
It's not like the tower of Babel, but you can hear many languages at the
LinuxTag. English and (of course) German is commonly used.

See you in Berlin

OK - you don't have the nasal handler for the KCS55 slave gyro system running.
You said you have a CVS version of FlightGear.
Please check, that you have the latest version of the Seneca checked out, too.
You might verify your Seneca-base.xml file. You probably don't see the lines
Aircraft/SenecaII/Systems/kcs55.nas

somewhere at line number 390 ?
If so, perform a cvs up of your data tree, esp. the SenecaII directory and
check for any error messages. If anything fails, completely remove the
SenecaII directory and do a "cvs up SenecaII" from your Aircraft directory.

Hope, this helps

I am really looking forward to attend some flightgear event in Europe
this year :-)

I would like to know what Flightgear people will have to do there ? do
"we" have a speech or a little space to show Flightgear ?
what about non german people ? will it be an english or german spoken
meeting ?

p.s. I think the Martin email should go in the main mailing list instead
of the dev one .

Thanks for the reply, Torsten.

Whether slaved or free, the HSI resolutely ponts north.

I do not see the "KCS55 pictorial navigation system initialized"
message.

No nasal eror messages are reported.
Here follows the complete console output:

dominatrix:~>fgfs
Model Author: Torsten Dreyer with a little help from DATCOM+
  Creation Date: 2006-01-16
Description: Model for a PA34-200T Seneca II

FGMultiplayMgr - No receiver port, Multiplayermode disabled
power up
creating PitotIcingHandler for /systems/pitot[0]
KI266 dme indicator #0 initialized

[Flightgear-devel] XML schema files for FlightGear

2009-03-13 Thread Torsten Dreyer
Hi

I recently revived the xml schema files I started to create a while ago.
While working on the autopilot for the HansaJet, I (re)learned that editing
xml files with vi is ok, but having a nice xml editor is much more fun. Once
you got used to the automatic popup menus offering the valid tags at your
current editing position, you *really* miss them once they are gone...
They may also serve as a good reference and documentation.
Autogenerated documentation looks like this:
http://www.t3r.de/fg/xml/Docs/autopilot.xsd.html
(Ignore the AusAddress - this is a bug somewhere)

I have quite a few schema files with annotation ready and I think it might be
a good idea to share them.

What do you think? Does FlightGear need xml schema files? Would anybody
besides me use them? What would be the appropriate place to store them?
My suggestion: data/Docs/XMLSchema

Comments welcome

Please check:
Is the gyro in slave mode? Check for the switch "Slave/Free" right of the
gma340 to be in "Slave" position.

If so, check the console messages. Do you see
"KCS55 pictorial navigation system initialized"

If so, are there any Nasal error messages?
