Just wanted to share a bit of my weekend with you: I went to the Dada exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in DC. I am awestruck by this show...all I can say is that, if you haven't already, run to DC before May 14th and take it in. It is huge and great. It is also far more contemporary and relevant than any art exhibition I've seen in years. One of the highlights is a performance of George Antheil's le ballet mechanique. Get the low-down here: http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/dadainfo.shtm Also - it is traveling to the MoMA in NYC this summer, but the National Gallery has really out done themselves with the layout and number of objects here. tre cool.

Yes! There are plenty of other blogs for that approach. I'd rather look at an array of collages, postings, etc. than post some obvious comment. RE: FLUXLIST: Your Kind of Town? THANKS MADAWG!
Hi Don, et.al. I sent a reply earlier in the week, but I don't think it went through... I wish you had more time in the Chicago area while I was there - it would've been good to see you! We probably passed on the street and didn't know it. I was in town attending/presenting at a conference. Though I didn't see the works of any former professors, I did see lots of actual former professors. I did spend quite a bit of time at the Art Institute where I spent entirely too much time looking at the Cornell collection. Then went to the Mus. of Contemporary Art where I hoped to spend too much time in the Warhol exhibition, but aside from the films, it was lackluster (no surprise, really). The rest of the MCA was great, though. AND A BIG THANKS TO MADAWG who put me in touch with her dear friend John Held, Jr. John included me in a dinner gathering at the home of Picasso Gaglione where lovely Darlene prepared a delectable southwest feast. I spent entirely too much time looking at their rubber stamp collection, among other things, and enjoyed an evening with great company. Upon leaving, Picasso graced me with a Fluxus rubber stamp box-set from the days of yore, and John generously shared some of his Duchamp-inspired stamps. RE: FLUXLIST: RE: THE RATS ASS
I give a rat's ass, and I agree with Crispin. History is important because education is important. The opportunity to learn and experience should not be exclusive to certain artforms, movements, or any other types of events, objects, or ideas. You can't stop people from being curious (such is the bane of the existence of many governments). Putting new spins on old ideas are how some of the most innovative concepts are born. I mean - isn't that how Fluxus was born? I also feel that being exclusive is the antithesis of the very heart of all things Fluxus. There is also an inherent need to categorize and label art (among other things) so it can be understood - just like the label Fluxus or Surrealist get slapped on things as a way of making sense of the ideas that lie within it. However, I don't agree with Madawg entirely. While I do agree that your work is your own - and your own to call Fluxus or Conceptual or Crap or Slkeiskdiw - I don't necessarily think a person has to get it in order to create something that would be considered Fluxus. If you get it - then Fluxus is simply a label you are imposing on yourself or your work. We could call something Fluxist although the person who created it does not get it at all. I do understand what your saying about the nature of Fluxus and being true to yourself, but can we agree that the idea of Fluxus was declared and then acted upon? There is a definate style of work that seperates Fluxus from, say, Abstract Expressionism. I don't think Robert Motherwell would consider himself a Fluxster - though he did reside in Provincetown...h...at the very least, I don't think Peggy Guggenheim would've considered him a Fluxus artist! I think it's just fine to be inspired by things and not consider yourself part of any particular movement. A freedom - the freedom to give a rat's ass.

Oh - and Crispin is too nice to say this, so I will say it for him: It's really costly to send out all the fluxboxes and some people who submitted pieces didn't send the requested $5.00+ (or was it $7) to cover shipping costs...Do you know who you are? Dear Don, et.al. If you could not read the link I forwarded, I did a cut and paste of it (sans photos) below... I couldn't get your message. Our screens are filtered. -Don -- Well - part of the proverb has already come to fruition: http://www.poopreport.com/Intellectual/Content/Art/art.html When shit is worth money, the poor will be born without assholes - Brazilian Proverb Merda d'Artista, or, You Call That Shit Art? Posted 4.11.02002 by Sarah Digestion and excretion. Elimination of solid waste. Making number two. Taking a big ol' dump. The names for this natural bodily process are many, and for eons upon eons, humans have taken an inordinate amount of interest in their own shit production. Heck, even primates at the zoo are frequently seen flinging or consuming their own feces, so there's a long evolutionary tradition at work. But to what end? Piero Manzoni: Merda d'Artista (1961). The culmination of the evolutionary process, some might say, is the human desire to create. The human creative impulse takes form across a broad spectrum, ranging from the profane to the sacred -- from one end we create shit, and from the other, art. Thus is seems only fitting (that is, if you follow my dubious line of reasoning) that the two would merge to form the ultimate in human creation. It is precisely this merger which Italian artist Piero Manzoni depicted in his 1961 piece Merda d'Artista, or Artist's Shit: He sealed his crap in a bunch of cans, signed and mounted them, and sold them as art. There are also two relatively well-known modern artists who have chosen to explore this line of imagery, to better our understanding of the human condition. Or maybe they were all just trying to come up with creative ways of getting shit into a museum setting. In either case, I think they did their duty (hahahaha! oh, I kill me) admirably. Chris Ofili: The Holy Virgin Mary (1996) Take the British artist Chris Ofili. You may recall his painting depicting the Virgin Mary with a breast sculpted from elephant dung, which created a huge ruckus a few years ago when displayed in a New York museum. But this is not his only work incorporating huge clumps of shit. In fact, he often uses elephant dung to prop up his paintings in shows. Ofili is quoted in Salon.com as saying, Somehow it makes the painting feel more relaxed, instead of being pinned upon the wall like it's being crucified ... [The painting can] stand in its own shit and watch the other paintings being crucified on the wall. Yeah! The titles of some of Ofili's other pieces speak for themselves: there's Bag of Shit, Shithead, and he even held a Shit Sale in 1993 in London. However, this is still all in the realm of the familiar and earthy. Yet another artist, Belgian Wim Delvoye, elevated the production of shit to an inhuman, impersonal level in his conceptual artwork Cloaca. This installation piece consisted of a huge machine of glass, tubes, wires, and pumps that, when fed a meal on one end, would digest it using a blender and jars of enzymes. Wim Delvoye: Cloaca (2000) According to the Artnet review (which was highly entertaining reading in itself), in a couple of days the food came out of a filtering unit as something close to genuine, human shit. A process which, apparently, made grown men blanch and little girls cry. What more could you ask from a piece of art? The turds were subsequently signed and sold á la Piero Manzoni. (Delvoye is currently at work on his ongoing project: tattooing a herd of pigs.) Art and shit: a confluence which these artists see as oh-so-natural, but a conjunction that remains disturbing to the average museum-goer. Yet why should that be so? Why should we not embrace humanity in all its shitty glory? Perhaps this is a question for art critics of future ages to answer, when they find petrified lumps of crap in the museum storage room.

The two-hour program, which took the form of an interview and discourse, aired in 1973 on the French government TV network O.R.T.F. under the title, Psychoanalysis. In a style that is typical of Lacan's own playful, impassioned, and evasive seminar style, we have invited theorists Catherine Liu and Charles Shepherdson to perform this discourse live and in English, alongside a projection of the original broadcast. A public discussion, introduced and moderated by Lacanian theorist Jean-Michel Rabaté, Slought Foundation Senior Curator and Editor of the new Cambridge Guide to Lacan (2003), will follow the performance. Drawing word associations from its language database, the Engine's grammar uses a probability-based approach to constructing syntactic constituents, which it aggregates into utterances, which it in turn aggregates into compositions. The project postulates that the construction of its texts does not actually occur within the software-these constructions, absent authorial intent and divorced from any underlying message, assume their status as poems only as they are read. The process of textual construction is firmly situated within the reader, not the software. Over the last year a dozen poems composed with the Poetry Engine's aid and submitted under the pen name Erica T. Carter have been accepted for publication in a number of little magazines and literary journals. As evidence of the project's success (or perhaps indicative of its failure), one editor accepted a poem with the comment, I found your works intriguing, but have to admit I couldn't wrest the meaning from them. Framing (Haacke's Condensation Cube) For more information: http://slought.org/content/11208/ Opens Saturday, April 17, 2004; 6:30-8:00pm | Free Slought Foundation presents Framing (Haacke's Condensation Cube), a vault installation organized by Aaron Levy featuring Hans Haacke's Condensation Cube of 1963-65, on display from April 17-May 20, 2004. This installation inaugurates a new series at Slought Foundation showcasing notable conceptual practices that invite a reconsideration of the effect framing has on critical interpretations. An essay on Haacke written in the 1980s by curator and critic Edward Fry (d. 1992) is also available: http://slought.org/content/21085/ In his early work, artist Hans Haacke was concerned with systems and processes. His Condensation Cube of 1963-65 [Clear acrylic, water, light, air currents, temperature, climate in exhibition situation; 30 x 30 x 30 cm; Collection of Edward Fry and Sandra Ericson] demonstrates the dependency of a relatively closed system on the environment in which it is situated: changes in temperature lead to the evaporation of water and its condensation on sidewalls of the cube. Haacke's condensation cube is a pedagogical tool still pertinent to understanding conceptual art and contemporary life. Questions to consider include: how does one frame or contextualize a work such as the condensation cube? What are its contents? To what degree is the cube a screen on which we can project our interpretations? Can this box be understood as a storage device, and if so, what is it storing? FLUXLIST: Laurie Anderson Lecture
For those of you who may be in the Philadelphia area next week...this is a free event. http://www.icaphila.org/events/40th.php
FLUXLIST: NYTimes.com Article: Travel Advisory: Spain Remembers Dalí, a Flamboyant Son
Thought some of you might be interested... Travel Advisory: Spain Remembers Dalí, a Flamboyant Son March 7, 2004 Year Dalí 2004 is under way, marking the centennial of the birth of Salvador Dalí. The artist who proclaimed I am Surrealism would not be disappointed by the roster of exhibitions, performances and conferences honoring him. Organized by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation with an international committee of scholars and politicians, the anniversary offers a comprehensive look at the artist, who both expanded and helped define art in the 20th century. Most of the events are happening in Catalonia, the region of Spain where Dalí was born and spent much of his life. (He died in 1989 in Figueres, his hometown in northern Catalonia.) Among the most revelatory exhibitions is Dalí: Mass Culture, which examines Dalí's work at the intersection of high and low culture, influencing later artists like Andy Warhol. It includes 400 works, ranging from Dalí's famous Surrealist paintings to French perfume and cognac bottles designed by him. In between are collaborations with the photographers Man Ray and Brassaï, the film makers Buñuel, Hitchcock and Walt Disney, as well as Dalí's ventures in advertising, fashion, graphic design and his adroitness at getting news media attention. The exhibition is at the Caixa Forum in Barcelona through May 23, and then goes to Madrid; St. Petersburg, Fla., and Rotterdam. Also in Catalonia will be Dalí: Elective Affinities, at the Palau Moja in Barcelona through April 18, highlighting the influences of artists such as Duchamp, Man Ray and Tanguy, on his work. The Gala-Dalí House Museum in Pùbol will present starting March 15 Salvador Dalí: Unpublished Drawings, showcasing Dalí's skill as a draftsman. Other shows include Dalí/Gaudí, Dalí's Land, Dalí and Lorca, Dalí and Optical Illusions, and Dalímitating, a look at his influence on later artists. Outside Spain, a retrospective of 150 paintings from international collections, including many of Dalí's iconic Surrealist masterpieces from the 1930's as well as his early and mature works, opens at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice Sept. 5 and goes to the Philadelphia Museum of Art next February. There are also symposia, film series, publications, concerts, and performances of Dalinian operas and ballet. This summer, the Peralada Castle Festival in Barcelona will feature a performance of Salome by Richard Strauss with re-creations, based on models and sketches by Dalí, of costumes and sets the artist designed for Covent Garden in 1949. Catalan restaurants are also celebrating with special menus and Surrealist-inspired dishes, from local cafeterias to El Bulli, a modern mecca of Spanish cuisine. A complete listing of events and dates with links to Year Dalí sites is available at www.dali2004.org. ANDREW FERREN

Sorry to post this to the list everyone, but I have some email address book trouble... While I'm at it - anyone feel like submitting some cards/games for the Fluxus card project??? Georg, I lost three seperate auctions on ebay! Feel like making a tape? How can I return the favour? Don, Thanks so much for the beautiful announcement. It was a pleasant surprise in my mailbox (I also appreciated the St. Valentine's stamp)! As for the card project: I have two cards (I have them labeled as: 2 Hearts 8 Spades) from you and one from Crispin (Labeled Fluxus Smiles). Crispin, Nice web site. I really like your sculptures too. I hope the show is going well! Also, for the card project, I initially received two emails from you containing items from both you and Don. The items I have on disk are described above. However, there are a couple of other files that have been corrupted and I can't access them...I think they came from the email you sent with the images posted on a web link. Were these cards in addition to the ones above, or were they the same images? Can you make sense of what I am asking? Thanks! Candace.

RE: FLUXLIST: Fwd: [fluxus-mail-art] Re: Theory on Fluxus
Yes - this is what I meant as well - one example I came across was a coin. So I assume that different coins were sent out as part of that edition. However, I don't know how many were included in that edition. Do you think the three fans you saw were the only ones in that issue, Owen? Bertrand - you could always try posting the Bertrand they were both, if such a thing can be possible - none were exactly alike but many were similar - for example I have seen three fans that were sent as issues - to were similar but one was a fan but quite different in its particulars. Bertrand, I know very little about this - but one suggestion (if selling) may be to post them to ebay with a reserve on the high end of Owen's estimates and see how much interest they generate... Yes Bertrand I know that Paik sent out some of them but I have also seen some that were clearly not sent out by Paik - or at least the handwriting of the address is clearly not Paik's and so I made an assumption (wrong?) that it was tomas' or maybe it was someone just helped him write the addresses?? The easiest would be to ask Paik, isn't it? Any volunteer? Yes it would but given his health I am not sure that would be a good idea, but then again it might be just the thing. . . . Bertrand. PS: however, my main problem remain: what the hell one could or should or would pay for several different copies? Very hard to tell, since there are so many variables, but since I have seen several small Paik posters and other printed materials from the same period go for 100-300 dollars (and higher) my somewhat educated guess is that they would be at least in this range if not a fair amount more. RE: FLUXLIST: new project
Hi Owen, I like the site a great deal. Have you posted an earlier version of it before? It seems familiar. I agree with Carol, however, that at least the text on the main page needs to have more contrast. I'm sure it looks different from monitor to monitor, but a 60/40 or 70/30 tonal difference would help. I also like how the numbers in the left menu disappear once selected. Against the black background, it creates a pattern of your travels through the site. One caveat, and I'm not sure if it's intentional, but when I scroll down only the text scrolls. This means you can only access the numbers that will fit in the window. I am working on a laptop with a 15 screen, and I can't see numbers past the 60s with my window as large as I can make it... Looks good overall, though! I am to blame for the lack of steam, sorry. I actually have been meaning to send around a new call to action for anyone who wants to participate in card project that I started...Better late than never?? I do have a few submissions for the project, but still need some more. Roger, I think I saved some game rules. I think you said you lost some initially... I could send them to you if you are still interested in putting this together... For those who aren't familiar - I am trying to compose a deck of Fluxus playing cards. From the entries, I will create an edition of 52. Black and white or colour are fine. Digital files of playing cards may be emailed to me off list at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or on-list if you want to share). You may also send something via post mail to me at : Candace LeClaire 8114 Devon Street Philadelphia, PA 19118 USA Either format is fine. FLUXLIST: Merce Cunningham
FYI to All - I read this article about Merce Cunningham's anniversary performance a while back - just getting around to sharing it with you. Sounds like it was a pretty cool event. Choice music, costume, lighting, etc... Candace. Entertainment 10/15/2003 18:08:30 EST JACK VARTOOGIAN/AP Photo Cunningham Anniversary Ends on 'Sides' By CLAUDIA LA ROCCO Associated Press Writer Raising a frail hand, 84-year-old choreographer Merce Cunningham acknowledged the audience's lengthy and loud standing ovation. And his dancers had yet to perform. The sold-out audience was primed for a stellar performance Tuesday night as the Brooklyn Academy of Music wrapped up the Merce Cunningham Dance Company's 50th anniversary season with the world premiere of Split Sides. Cunningham delivered, beginning with his now ritualistic roll of the dice to determine the order of the night's performance. Flanked by his dancers and rockers Radiohead and Icelandic band Sigur Ros, Cunningham and a cast of artistic luminaries - artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg and former dancers Caroline Brown and Sage Cowles - threw four times to set the order of music, decor, costumes and lighting. The choreography's order, Section A and then B, had been determined a bit earlier to give the dancers time to rehearse the transition. Thursday night's rolls decided that Radiohead would perform its 20-minute piece before Sigur Ros. Robert Heishman's set would be followed by Catherine Yass' set. James Hall's black and white costumes would precede his color costumes. James F. Ingalls' 300 lighting series would be followed by his 200 series. True to Cunningham's famous love of chance, any or all of this could change in subsequent performances. But as you watch the piece, it is difficult to imagine or remember that all the work's elements had been created independent of each other. This was particularly true during Section B, when the minimal, lullabylike music of Sigur Ros was eerily matched to angular yet oddly tender duets. Cunningham's penchant for setting ballet positions slightly off kilter, combined with a repeated sound such as a crank being wound up, brought to mind the mechanical movements of music box ballerinas. Of course, given Cunningham's avoidance of plot, viewers can imagine anything they want - constructing narratives only to occasionally remember that the gentle Sigur Ros music guiding their emotional responses could just as easily be Radiohead's densely layered electronica and voice samplings. Or that Heishman's wintery abstract landscape in Section A might instead have been Yass' ghostly, refracted skyscrapers. While future audiences will judge subsequent combinations, the gods of chance smiled on Cunningham Thursday night. Split Sides felt more thought out than the night's opening dance, Fluid Canvas, a New York premiere. Set to John King's heavy longtermparking and performed in front of a stream of images that sometimes resembled a computer's screen saver, the futuristic work too often lost itself in its quirky, repetitive patterns. Still, the piece contained more than a few remarkable passages, including a superb solo by Derry Swan, who cut jagged patterns across the stage as a small sliver of white light expanded on the screen behind her. FLUXLIST: Candy's Cards
Hi All, I am still looking for submissions for a deck of cards. This project sort of parrellels that of D.Billy who is using a pre-existing deck. This came out of our search for a container for the fluxbox. My suggestion was, conatiner: box for playing cards. Edition: 52). I guess it sparked some interest. Originally I thought that each person would be assigned a card until all were accounted for, but now it's open and we're letting fate determine the entire deck. I intend to make an edition of 52 decks. I will also take on the task of printing and/or copying the edition, so participants only need send one version of their card(s). RE: FLUXLIST: cardgame candace
For the card we're sending to you: -is each person doing an assigned card so as to ensure a complete deck, or are we doing whatever card we please, accepting the likleihood of missing cards repeats? My original thinking was to assign cards for the very reason you stated, but the I realized that many cards may not retain any reference to the original. That being said, I don't really think it's necessary to assign cards, though feel free to base your design(s) on any cards within a traditional deck (or not). I think it will be more interesting to leave it to chance as to which cards end up creating the deck. My only concern is that there are 52, if not 54 (if we count jokers) different cards made to formulate a complete deck. -do you want a physical piece to be scanned reprinted as an edition, or do you want a digital file? Hi, Just want to clarify: you only need to send me one copy of your card. I will print the editions. Sorry for any confusion. However, feel free to send more than one design if you like. As for a deadline, how about April 1st? Is that reasonable? Candace. -Original Message- From: Roger Stevens To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 1/13/2003 6:08 PM Subject: Re: FLUXLIST: Playing Cards 1 Okay, I'll go with the Fluxcards Rule Book Send me the rules to any game that might be played with the, as yet uncreated, Fluxlist Deck. You might adapt a regular game such as whist, rummy, bridge, poker, happy families etc to a new fluxy format - or you might invent a brand new game. Keep the rules reasonably short and succinct and I will put them together into a small, card sized, rule book to accompany the cards. I'd suggest not mentioning your game/rules/ideas on the list - so the games should be a nice surprise - of course you can if you really want to. send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] deadline? Regards Roger
RE: FLUXLIST: Playing Cards addendum...
Why not pursue both avenues in this card idea? I'd like to stick with my original idea about the cards from scratch, but I've fowarded my address to you so I can alter one of your cards. I also like the idea of working with these cards that have been around the block - so to speak. Should be fun! It most certainly is, and I'm definitely interested! -D.Billy- Free 20MB Web Site Hosting and Personalized E-mail Service! Get It Now At Doteasy.com http://www.doteasy.com/et/

-Original Message- From: Roger Stevens To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 1/11/2003 5:13 PM Subject: FLUXLIST: Playing Cards I guess I was assuming many of the cards would lose their identity I quite like the idea of designing one card, tho' and you taking on the task of printing them etc You're right - I don't know what I'm talking about. I assume the cards would morph into something else too. So I guess, as long as different designs are submitted, they could be mixed and matched to create unique decks. The important issue is that there be enough cards to create enough decks. I also like the idea of the packs having a random element e.g. several packs with five King of Hearts, a wallaby and a three of saucepans I also thought I might take on the task of organising the rule book - unless you'd like to do that too - I don't mind Sounds great. I thought people might like to submit versions of games to play with the cards e.g. Fluxwhist, Fluxrummy etc Your deal Go Fish. Roger
RE: FLUXLIST: Playing Cards
Roger, et.al. I'm open to suggestions. Jokers would be good, so let's say 54 pieces in each deck. I was originally thinking that each participant would select a card (for example I may take Queen of Hearts, you may take King of Diamonds, etc.) until all are accounted for, but your idea of mixing and matching is interesting too. (One entry per person, though, may be more realistic?) Electronic entries are a great idea - I'd be happy to print them out. Colour or black and white is fine. Regular size cards would be ideal. What do you think? Anyone else have ideas about this? -Original Message- From: Roger Stevens To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 1/11/2003 4:53 AM Subject: FLUXLIST: Playing Cards Playing cards sounds like fun. Great idea. I'll send you a contribution. Will they be the regular size? 1a Do we send one card which you copy 54 times (including jokers)? 1b or send a design for one card which you print? OR 2 do we send a certain number of the same card - say 54 and you redistribute them? or 2b do we send any number of same card and you distribute them as and when you have 54? or 2c do we send a selection of cards which you mix and match to packs - thus all packs are different? Didn't notice that my request went up on the server the other day, but I'd like to participate too. Also - a suggestion for a future project: Container: box for playing cards Edition: 52 participants submit a card for the deck Candace.

FLUXLIST: boxes
Wow - I really wish these were the size of a cigar box... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3105048283 Seriously, though - if you can actually take this photograph seriously; I know I can't - here are some boxes that may be useful, and they average about $1.00 per box (not including shipping). The size is 4x4x8. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=1610item=3105668059 Candace.
