Alan, You can repair your XP install and thus retain all files and settings whilst putting a fresh copy of XP on your machine. Just boot from your XP install CD and select the repair option rather than a normal install, this will retain all your files and settings. XP is drivel but this feature actually works pretty well. Hi all, Just to announce that there's a Jeff Nuttall show on in Ulverston (Cumbria) at the moment at the Lantern house. I just went up on Saturday and it's excellent. It's on till 19th November (I know short notice, but I didn't find out about it early either, it's only on for a month). Mainly paintings, some sculpture, assemblage, mail art/my own mag stuff and DVD of performances (readings, People Show etc.) if you're sensible (unlike me) and get there early enough you will be able to see all of the DVD. I was there for about an hour. If you're a fan of Jeff's work then worth the trip. http://www.welfare-state.org/current/programme.htm cheers, Sol.

Hi Alan, An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist Good idea. I have lots of Fluxlist notes...despite being very quiet these days..although I'm probably quiet because Fluxus no longer really influences my art practice in any substantial manner. Interesting that people meditate for years to blank their minds but I can get it just like that or after a bottle of red...hehe! BTW Alan we should talk about the 10th Anniversary at some point! It occured to me that since we don't often talk about fluxus maybe we should adopt a fight club style rule so that the first rule of fluxlist is we do not talk about fluxus, of course that's not recursive like the fight club rule.but then again there's probably no reason to be recursive since the recursiveness is perhaps implicit in the name fluxlist. In other news I feel someone should do an installation that recreates Cameron's bedroom from Ferris Bueller's Day Off! FLUXLIST: First Cut
Hi all, When Alan and I met the other day we took a little bit of footage on our digital cameras. I've been working on editing this into a short film ulitilising the kind of cut-up techniques found in the films Anthony Balch made with Burroughs and Gysin. Anyway this is a first cut. It's a wmv so you need a recent version of windows media player to view it...(fine for PC users but Mac people will have to download the player if they don't already have it installed). When I finish the film I will produce it in a variety of formats (probably wmv mpg and mov) actually I'm recutting the whole thing now using a different set of software tools. This first cut was just to see how some of the footage would hang together and test an analogue synth soundtrack. The good thing about wmv however is the compression...file size is tiny so you can even view this on a dial-up connection. anyway here it is http://www.fluxlist.com/headgates.wmv in retrospect we should have shot more footage but the use of effects etc. makes it quite interesting. Film geeks may note the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ending :) cheers, Sol.

Re: FLUXLIST: FLUXUSinstitute Brisbane
Hi all, Its not all that well known but the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane has a substantial FLUXUScollection Yes, much of this was sorted out by the late Nic Zurbrugg I think. Nic did loads for Fluxus and I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times before his sudden death a few years ago. A really nice guy with a real love for the avant-garde. He also published a small magazine of concrete poetry in the 70s called Stereo Headphones. cheers, Sol.
FLUXLIST: fluxlist.com updated
Hi all, Glad to see you like the idea of fluxlist.com I've just uploaded the first batch of archived sites, more to come, always more to come. I have a list of what needs doing. You'll also see documentation for the mp3 based projects we did way back when. I saved all the documentation from these and this is the first time these compositions have been made publicly available. If you remember the URLs of old projects please let me know them...I don't think I've forgotten anything but you never know. It's funny to look at these old sites now..they look quite dated..like getting old clothes out of the wardrobe! Oh, Cecil thanks for the offer of hosting but I bought 100Mb for this which should be okay. I just uploaded 27mb of archived sites so I think I should have enough space for the moment. Alan, didn't realise you had the old companion site, nevermind the more the better. cheers, Sol.

FLUXLIST: fluxlist.com
Hi all, In order to redress the loss of Allen Bukoff's Fluxlist companion site: Yesterday evening I purchased fluxlist.com as well as 100Mb of web space to go with it. My plan is to build a new fluxlist companion site as well as reinstate all the fluxlist sites that I and others have made in the past but consolidate them in one place. This is something I would have done before buy I never wanted to upset Allen Bukoff since he ran the list companion site. My plan is to provide the following on fluxlist.com. 1) A list of fluxlist members and any other Fluxus artists who wish to be listed. The name listing will link to your website. 2) A list of Fluxus documents: essays, texts interview etc. I hope those who've published on Fluxus will be generous enough to allow me to reproduce some of that material on the web. 3) Interviews: Begin an interview program with new and old Fluxus artists. Many of you will no doubt be able to help with that. 4)Website archive: I will archive all Fluxlist websites. This means that all the pages here and there we've had over the years can be collected together in one place, of course they can still remain in their original location too. Okay, well that's the start. If you have any more ideas let me know. cheers, Sol.
Re: FLUXLIST: Events for Allen Bukoff
Hi all, I have to say that the more I think about it all I really feel that Allen Bukoff has done by withdraw his Fluxus websites is penalise members of Fluxlist and students interested in Fluxus. Those Fluxus artists he addresses more than likely don't care one way or the other whether fluxus.org or fluxlist exists...certainly they've never taken part so the only people that have taken part in collaborative Fluxus works on the web now get to see their work disappear (e.g Shoe Days etc.). I can appreciate Allen's point of view but don't really feel that anything has been achieved by closing the websites. As to the future of Fluxlist - I think it's as healthy as ever, interestingly the number of members is around the same as it was 5 years ago. The list will still provide the virtual forum it always has done. cheers, Sol.

Hi all, Happy New Year to all. Whilst it's great to see Alan Bowman on board with Fluxlist admin it's very sad to see that Allen Bukoff is leaving the list. There wouldn't be a Fluxlist without Allen's hard work these past 8 years. List admin is a tedious business and I think Allen has done us proud. I think we should all raise our glasses and drink a toast to Allen B and wish him all the best in his future art projects. cheers, Sol.

Sol (and the rest of the list) - it is still going to happen - it just all keeps getting pushed back, now it seems that it will be the end of spring or summer of next year (2005). It will be a special issue of Visible Language on Fluxus today as an ongoing artistic form of expression such as that on the fluxlist (not just the historical stuff). Since the issue has come up here as a discussion item let me ask you all a question - I am still looking for a few women artists that see their work as part of the direct heritage of Fluxus. If you know of anyone or want to suggest yourself please email me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Owen
FLUXLIST: stats
Michael, Those stats only go up to 2002. I wrote some software to analyse the archives which was how I came up with those. Unfortunately there is no easy way to repeat that analysis. I'd have to write new programs to do it. I don't know if I'd have time. I did that analysis for an article I wrote about Fluxlist that Owen and Ken were going to use. I did hear that it was finally going to be published but this was some months ago and I've not heard from Owen since so I assume it's not going to happen. Anyway, Michael if I do new stats you'll show up on those. Yes, it's only a core few that posted a lot, although I now post very rarely compared to say 1998/1999 when I posted a hell of a lot. But then again we all e-mail less these days. cheers, Sol. - Original Message - From: michael leigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 06, 2004 7:44 PM Subject: Re: FLUXLIST: Hysterical At last on Fluxlist Fascinating statistics! I'm amazed that so few take an active part in the list and its rather obviously who take part too much! I didnt see myself anywhere so must go back and see many times I posted( not that it matters a jot!). By the way the next issue of FLOSS will be the last due to lack of interest from most people(I can see why now) but mainly from me. So if you intended to send some pages and have them on the back burner or wherever it is you keep them, send them now of forever hold your peas. Michael

Congratulations :) cheers, Sol. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 06, 2004 1:06 PM Subject: FLUXLIST: Historical Atlas of Fluxlist waddaboud.. An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist? Following on from the map of several years ago which placed fluxlist members on one of two maps: An Historical Atlas of Fluxlist would not only place members on a fluxlistworld map but also give an insight into their background etc. Members could write a biography of another member of the list, including ancestry, achievements etc etc. This 'history' could extend to the place in which they live/work etc and include just about everything or anything. taking into consideration that most of us have only ever been in touch through the medium of email and there are few photos of listmembers around for us to see (apart from some devilishly good looking folks who met up in NYC with allen bukoff), biographers should be relatively unhindered by the truth! the result would be a 'document' of fluxlist and its place geographically and historically and this is a really clumsy sentence within something or other. a member list should be made available and 'lurkers' included to make it complete and comprehensive (if imcomprehensible) just a thought alan
Re: FLUXLIST: Hysterical At last on Fluxlist
Hi Alan, The atlas could also include the cookbook recipes. I was never able to do anything with those because there were so few (about 25 in total)..I really wanted to do a proper book with them. What I suggest for the atlas is a proper book...A4,perfect bound, full colour cover, black and white pages ::text/image/halftones. Since cafepress offers good publishing facilities from pdf we can do the book as pdf in quark/publisher/pages in ilustrator etc then offer the PDF as a free download but allow people to buy a print version via cafepress..this way printing will be on demand and the only initial investment is time. wow, my first two posts in the same day on fluxlist for ages.reminds me of the nineties! cheers, Sol. aww shucks! thanks sol, it's all roger steven's fault! he suggested something different about a completely different thing, about which i'm sure he's forgotten, over dinner in venice some moons ago. see? so is it a goer then? anyone interested could send an offlist mail to me and i'll make a list. that should do for starters. a
Re: FLUXLIST: RE: Happy Thanksgiving
Allen, regarding Bush etc. I think we have to accept the fact that our countries (the UK is just as bad for this) are largely populated by idiots who are quite prepared to have any government at all as long as their own life is not affected. Many people don't seem to care about the welfare of others or the rest of the world even those who are disenfranchised themselves. As an observer from outside the US it doesn't surprise me that Bush was re-elected. but then again I felt that Kerry was pretty flawed too, there was too much going on about him being a military man etc. as the old anarchist maxim goes: No matter who you vote for the government always gets in! At least with the US system Bush can't be re-elected again. With the UK system we end up with the same government for years and years..here the government even decides when to hold the next general election so they can put it off if they're worried about being unpopular at a particular point in time. cheers, Sol.

FLUXLIST: George Brecht Exhibition in London
GEORGE BRECHT : Works from 1959 - 1973 Sep 9 - Oct 9, 2004 Gagosian Gallery 8 Heddon Street London W1B 4BU Tues - Sat 10 -6 http://www.gagosian.com Opening reception for the artist: 9 September 6 8pm Gagosian Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of the work of George Brecht. Born in New York in 1926, George Brecht was one of the most influential artists of the 1960s in New York, where he became involved with the experimental group of artists associated with Fluxus such as John Cage, Walter de Maria and George Maciunas. Brechts background in research chemistry, statistics and oriental philosophy would ultimately form the foundation of his thinking and his art. An underlying principle in Brechts oeuvre, inspired by the Dadaist Tristan Tzara, is that reality is more interesting and important than art. Following this paradigm, Brecht incorporated music, time and space in his work, presenting simple, randomly arranged objects and calling on the viewer to bring his own experiences to the work: to interact with the object, to rearrange elements, or to do nothing. Concerned with overturning conventions and upsetting cultural expectations, Brecht introduced chance and open-endedness into his work, expanding on the Duchampian form of the readymade by creating objects that were events, replete with multiple, unforeseeable possibilities. Included in the exhibition are such seminal objects/events as The Case (Suit Case) (1959), Medicine Cabinet (1960), Chair Event (1960), and Monument to the Revolution (1970), amongst others. Accompanying the exhibition is a fully-illustrated catalogue including a new essay on Brechts work by Thomas Kellein, Director of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld, and an historic interview with the composer Michael Nyman. George Brecht currently lives in Cologne.

I never got into blogging as too much else to do. I understand most people spend hours on them. Stoke is just a bit too far for us to go. hazel drives and not keen on motorways. is there a back road to get there? Well you could go on the A roads but I just checked out the map and realised you're near Northwich so you're further than I thought. If you're at Crewe you can pick up the A531 from just outside Crewe and then come to Newcastle via the back way through countryside and little villages which is an okay journey but takes longer so probably not worth it just for a flea market...depends how keen you are. Oh I've just been on multimap.co.uk and saw that you could go A530 then A533 through Sandbach and down into Stoke through Kidsgrove then pick up the A5011 and A34 to get to Newcastle. Or you could go across and pick up the A34 at Congleton which you then follow all the way to Newcastle. It doesn't get more Fluxus than this does it cheers, Sol.

Re: FLUXLIST: point and click
Hi all, for non-programmers: writing text adventures (z-standard) you can use inform http://www.inform-fiction.org/ writing your own doom etc. try dark basic http://darkbasic.thegamecreators.com/ or the 3D gamemaker, this comes with precreated elements you just bang them together, however you can edit many of the image maps etc. to create very bizarre effects, this is the easiest game creation tool I've ever seen, kind of a level editor reallyit's by the same people who do dark basic http://t3dgm.thegamecreators.com/ for all: game creation resources http://www.ambrosine.com/resource.html In all honesty you need to spend a lot of time on game development to get anywhere. Only the 3D gamemaker is really fast and that's because you are only really changing the graphics on a standard 3D game. The most game development fun I ever had was programming stuff for Gameboy(in C using GBDK) but it took many evenings and all I ever wrote were a few sprite demos and a little synthesizer (this took about 3 weeks working on it every evening and at the time I had already been working as a programmer for some time). I think a Fluxlist game would be a good idea but it's a really big project. You could organise it via the Wiki and adopt a development model that allows each person to do a small part of the game. A text adventure could work quite well, also it would be cross-platform if it followed the z-machine standard which would be excellent. FLUXLIST: Ming PHP
Hi all, Saw project K++ announced on Slashdot today go to http://www.robertpeake.com/CannedKandinsky/ a kandinsky emulator doc at http://www.robertpeake.com/CannedKandinsky/doc/ it uses ming http://ming.sourceforge.net/ and php http://www.php.net/ I'd not used ming before so I downloaded the samples and relevant php files and had a little offline play about with it. It's pretty straightforward..only about 2 hours of messying about to understand what's going on, configure it and get my first program written with it (well the Hello World stage). Anyway if I do anything interesting with it I'll send a URL. If you want a layman's explanation of the above basically ming lets you write php programs to generate swf files (flash movies). So if you have ming and php on your server you can make flash movies on the fly...very cool it seems. Well thought you'd want to know...hopefully I'll find some time over the next few weeks to play with it. I think there're a lot of applications for this tech esp. visual poetry...normally it takes ages to create flash animations so this thing should be a real time saver whilst allowing great degree of randomisation in creating content. cheers, Sol.

Roger, I was Monday morning confused before, you don't have Yahoo mail, you use Outlook. I believe Fluxlist has a size limit on messages -- i.e. if you send a small image it's okay, but a large one won't get through -- which is probably what is kicking in with your Outlook messages which I'm guessing are HTML, especially if the HTML came from Word which would typically have bloated it. Do you know to make your email text-only? That would probably fix the problem. http://www.expita.com/nomime.html -- Click on E-mail client programs at top, then your version of email program. It's basically this: On the 'Format' menu, Select the format you want to change the message to: The menu list offers three choices: Plain Text, Microsoft Rich Text, and HTML. Select Plain Text. Rich Text isn't as bad as HTML but text is the most ecological. Or please send the entire thing to me directly and I'll post it. Re: FLUXLIST: frozen screen syndrom
Hi Michael, Okay, I assume you're running windows and I assume because you say old PC that you're running win95 or 98 or ME so.. Switch on the PC and start pressing F8 just after you see the bios information appear on the screen. After a moment a screen should appear giving you options on how to start windows. Select safe mode from this menu (just enter the number for this). Windows should then boot into safe mode. If it boots into safe mode remove any programs that are loaded on startup (e.g. virus checkers etc.) by moving everything out of C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp and using add/remove programs to remove virus checkers or similar. If you're confident you can also check for stuff being loaded at startup via the registry by running regedit and checking the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run but don't modify this unless you know what you're doing. Then shutdown as normal switch the machine off and on again...does it now boot normally If it didn't boot in to safe mode you have two choices either: 1) go through the F8 step again but select step-by-step confirmation..this starts windows by loading all your drivers one by one so you can see which one it is having trouble loading. You then need to look up the driver on microsoft's knowledge base (on their website) to see if it has any known issues and what fixes are recommended. 2)Install a fresh copy of windows. This is not ideal as windows should really only be installed clean (i.e. newly partitioned and formatted drive) but this way you can at least get the machine working and keep all your files. Here's an extra note on booting into safe mode http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm Safe mode is simply windows with a minimum set of drivers loaded (e.g. no network, low res vga graphics etc) so the machine is much more likely to be able to boot. Well, any more questions let me know and I'll try and help. Feel free to contact me offlist about it.You've got my e-mail anyway. cheers, Sol. - Original Message - From: michael leigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 5:11 PM Subject: FLUXLIST: frozen screen syndrom hi this is aplea for help from all you tech-heads out there. just defragged our old pc but now the desktop wont appear just the microsoft doo dad. i keep re-booting but nothing happens. just gets to this bloody microsoft thingy and freezes. can anyone help? cheers Michael Yahoo! Re: FLUXLIST: accidental fluxlist and Dieter Roth
Roger wrote on Dieter Roth: He's always been one of my favourite artists and was quite an influence on my work. I first came across his work in the library of the Art College when I was a sculpture student (this would have been 1968? 69?) It was book full of little poems and sayings stuck in with transparent sticky tape. I just thought... WOW! That book sounds like 246 Little Clouds published by Dick Higgins' Something Else Press..I have to say I'm the proud owner of a near mint original copy..one of the more treasured books I have. I bought it in Amsterdam on my Birthday a few years ago, then we got the bus to Edam but found out that Edam is no longer made in Edam.?? Anyway I thoroughly recommend it and you can still pick it up quite cheap from abebooks.com or sommat like that. cheers, Sol.
Re: FLUXLIST: Wolverines and badgers. Holy Toledo, Batman!
Nonsense! Wolverines are just bigger than badgers. Wolverines are simply bad-tempered, while badgers are bad-tempered and cunning (and, being closer to the ground, more cthonic). Of course, there is the honey badger kills for sport, just like people do. Sorry to disappoint you but Badgers don't exist. Do you know anyone who's actually seen a badger? I reckon all those wildlife programs just use cgi for badgers, that's why they're black and white as the original images were generated on a zx80 in assembler. Meryl, I always think of you as having been bitten by a radioactive badger, and now scurrying the streets of Gotham looking for snacks. Maybe adamantine claws don't suit you? Sol. No I've not read all the debate yet (yes I've been on holiday :) but thought I'd comment quickly about Fluxlist: It has its ups and downs, we come and go but it works and it works really well. We've been here as long as rhizome and the others but we've not gone commercial and we're still true to ourselves which is an achievement both in terms of Fluxus and Net Art. I can't say any more as I still have so many e-mails left to read. Remember only 2 years to go until fluxlist is ten. The image is thus made on the fine screen. ink is squeezed straight from the tube onto the screen and 100-150 prints can be made from one multiple colour application. Highly reccomended. Sets cost about £70 in Japan but difficult to get them sent overseas apparently. An australian company can do it ( this is where Mark gets his supplies ) but cost a great deal more. they can be reached at www.nehoc.com.au I was thrilled with my postcards. Re: FLUXLIST: Fluxus in School
Hi Ray and all, There may be value (say intellectual value) in adopting a retroFLUXUS stance in order to get a handle on the ideas ³the attitude² embraces or was/is it embraced? But that consideration alone would seem to ignore the potential of the idea(s) that gave FLUXUS its impetus in the 60s. Was everything that needed to be discovered, indeed discovered in the 60s/70s? Is the exploration complete? Can indeed we really contemplate a retroFLUXUS? I One solution to the employment of past artistic models in contemporary practice has been offered by IRWIN with their retro principle http://www.nskstate.com/athens/irwin/texts/retro.asp I'm just reading their Retroprincip catalogue at the moment that I got the other weekend. IRWIN employ historical models of avantgarde praxis in contemporary activity through their use of retroavantgarderead the above link and here they reference Malevich in current work http://www.nskstate.com/athens/irwin/texts/icons-review.asp Of course IRWIN could be interpreted in the context of plagiarism also but I think their ideas are strong enough to counter such arguments. BTW - as regards the Fluxus Codex we are very lucky to have such easy access to thorough documentation like thisI've yet to see another art catalogue that is equally comprehensive. I also understand where Madawg is coming from on this but without some evaluation of current fluxus practice situated within the historical activity/traditions from which it evolves it would be very difficult to make real progress. cheers, Sol.

I think considering time as linear is actually useful and I refer to progress in terms of new work in any given field building upon past discoveries. Yes we can choose a non-linear picture of time and choose to begin our work at some point in the past but we do so at the peril of ignoring all relevant intermediate activity some of which may well negate our intentions. I think the documented history of Fluxus is invaluable to anyone who would adopt Fluxus working methods, otherwise the term Fluxus functions solely as a label or brand and its use is somewhat meaningless. cheers, Sol.
