Hi Fellow Framers:
I am using FrameMaker 10 for the first time this week, on Windows XP (I think,
I need to check at work tomorrow).
Are there any new great surprises I need to be aware of - any gotchas ?
Thanks,

Both 9 and 10 work much better if you have a box chock full of RAM and
the new user interface really requires a dual-monitor setup to be
really productive because the Photoshop UI scheme puts pods and
dialog boxes all over the place.
You can work around these, but you won't be a happy camper if
I am trying to create a hyperlink to a PDF. Basically, when the user
clicks the link, I want a separate PDF file to open. I'm working in
FrameMaker 7, but the finished document will be published as a PDF.
I am using Scriptorium's FrameMaker 7 guide, which I consider my FM
bible and has always
Hi Nina,
This is the marker that I use for this purpose (works in frame 6 and 9):
openpage folder location/filename.fm:1
the .fm gets converted to .pdf when you convert from frame to pdf
the :1 means it opens at page 1
Hope that helps,

Hi Sue,
Switching from FM8 to 10 I have found (as recently discussed here) that Save as
PDF doesn’t always work. You have to print to the Adobe PDF printer and then
open the .ps file in Distiller to generate a PDF.

Hello,
On Windows 7, FM 9, fully patched, considering upgrading to 10 but
nothing imminent.
For years we've produced both compressed and uncompressed HTML help,
most of it created manually in a good editor. We've purposely stayed
away from third-party conversion utilities, mostly so that
Hello Gay
You omitted to tell us what your other deliverables are, apart from Help; and
what your future deliverables may be. For example, if you are not creating PDF,
do you need FM at all? Will you be translating?
The range of options spans all the way from a single HAT such as RoboHelp
Sorry for the omissions and thanks for your response.
Our deliverables are a multitude of various end-user docs: User guides, install
docs, release notes, you name it. Dozens of documents, updated on a regular
basis. We distribute our FM-authored docs in PDF format. Translation is a

This is off topic, but does anyone know of a way to link from an HTML page to a
specific destination/location within a PDF?
Any info would be appreciated!

I'm using FM 7.2 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and after a few initial hiccups, it's

Hi Gay,
It depends on what exactly you are looking to do, the level of quality you
expect, and the output that you need the help system to be in. It also
depends on what software you currently have. I am assuming your criteria is
1) inexpensive and 2) low learning curve 3) can generate a help
I have a book (inherited from an outside source) with hundreds of pages of
orphaned text frames, some alongside good text, some simply preventing a blank
page from being deleted. I can delete them individually, but this will take
ages. I want to delete all of them in one swell foop, if I can.

Link to the PDF filename, add a # character, followed by the named
destination in the PDF, or a page number

John,
Assuming the rest of the text is in a single text flow, you can do the
following:
- select all of the main text and cut it out of the document
- select Special Delete Pages (and delete all of the pages in the document)
- you'll now be on the master pages
- select View Body Pages (OK the
If all the text you want is in one flow, the solution is pretty easy.
Just make a clean template file, then import the flow -- FileImportFile (by
copying), specifying the flow you want to import -- from each legacy chapter
file into a copy of the clean template. Everything that is not part of

I'd second Joseph's assessment.
I use both RH as part of the TCS and MIF2Go -- RH produces nicer
looking files more quickly because it has nice templates, but MIF2Go
is much more stable and bulletproof.
