Framers,

I hope someone has an idea on this. I've narrowed down a crashing
problem to
one line of text in a file. It's a full Windows path with back slashes
in
it. No matter what I've tried, Frame crashes when spell check comes to

Here's what I've tried:

- Retype the line in Note Pad, then paste into FM

No dice. Even if the line is the only text in a new FM file, FM crashes
when
I click Start Checking.

Any ideas? I can't remove the line of text from the content. :o

I'm not sharing the line here, as I'm about 2 steps removed from the end
client and the line has two different product names in it. I'll share it

DANGER!

Copying anchored frames may result in numbering madness. Well, in our
case, anchored frames include text frames for the captions. Occasionally,
copying the frames results in a file with broken numbering. Ultimately,
the only fix is to recreate all frames from the scratch from the position
at which the numbering breaks. Saving to MIF doesn't seem to work.

To eliminate the drudgery of inserting frames, try FrameScript

2006-05-25 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Ah, I knew you folks would have a solution. Thanks to Peter, Penelope, and
Fred who suggested the character style set to Language None.

Other solutions like variables (thanks Jessica) or insets might also work,
but this seemed the easiest and did work.

To add to the overall mystery (in case anyone is interested), the same text
worked fine in a new file created on my laptop, but that exact same file
crashed on my desktop system. Both have FM 7.0.

No matter, the char tag worked like a charm.

Thanks!!!

Maybe Word's notoriously broken autonumbering is actually

It looks like I may have been more clever than I realized when

I had a similar numbering problem yesterday with one file out of 18 in a
book. (Must be the phase of the moon or something causing all these
numbering problems at once, huh?)

I'm using continued paragraph numbering in sub-chapter files. All of
the
files in one section of the book worked except one. No matter what I
did,
the first heading in that file stayed at 0.1 (heading text). It should
have
been 4.7 (heading text) Retagging did not work, nor did re-importing
all of
the formatting parameters into the file. Copying the text into a new
doc
also did not work.At that point, I assumed there was something
hidden in
the text that was causing the problem. The only solution I could find
was
to delete the first heading, manually reenter the text, and retag the
heading.

So, my question to the list is: What can cause a heading to become
corrupt?
I forgot to mention that these files are imported from Word. But
remember,
all of them worked except one.

Thanks,

Diane

7.2 crash on exit

2006-05-25 Thread Mark Barratt
Sorry if this is old: I use Frame in intense bursts between weeks/months
of doing other stuff and get a bit casual about reading list mails (and
where are the archives at frameusers?).

When I quit my recently-upgraded Frame (7.2 latest build, Win XP latest)
I get an application error: 'The instruction at 0x0034199f referenced
memory at 0x. The memory could not be read. Click on OK to
terminate the program.

I get the same message on my laptop in the same situation. Is this
common? Doesn't seem to lose or destroy anything.

And does everyone get the 'undo history will be lost' every time they
save or print?

Thanks

frame to pdf question

2006-05-25 Thread obair81
In the Frame Print Book dialog, I wanted to set things so one less paragraph
tag to get included in the PDF TOC. In the PDF Setup for selected files
dialog, Bookmarks tab, I changed the list of tags in the Include Paragraphs
box, thinking that would do it, as per usual.

I noticed that acrobat ignored my change. The PDF TOC was unchanged.

So I took out all but one tag, and the PDF TOC upon regeneration was unchanged.

I have Generate PDF bookmarks checked, as always.

I have never seen this before.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

This one I know about! :) You can set this up in the TFrameMaker to
only come up once (or not at all) per FrameMaker session.

Use File-Preferences-General to see the check box for Show warnings
while clearing history and the selector for Once ... or the Always.

I have it set to show once (may go to none later). Much less painful
that way. :)

The list of paragraph tags to include as PDF bookmarks is stored
both in the book and in each individual file. Specifying additional
tags from the book file's PDF Setup dialog saves the additions
in each component file as well as in the book file (that's why that
operation is so slow sometimes). But removing tags from the
list in the book file doesn't always remove the tags in the lists
stored in the individual files. And it is a feature of FrameMaker
that any tags specified in individual files will get picked up in
the bookmarks in addition to the globally selected list.

The bottom line is that you probably need to go into the PDF
Setup dialog of each individual file to de-select the tags you
no longer want picked up as bookmarks.

OT: IXGen for Wurd?

2006-05-25 Thread Lucie Haskins
Hi Yves,
Check out DEXter. I use it all the time for clients who need me to index
in Word.

DEXter is a plug-in for Word that allows you to either:
1) work directly in Word to create your index entries via a table very
similar to IXgen's Editable Marker List --or--
2) work in professional indexing software and then import the resulting
file (containing the index entries) directly into Word. DEXter will
create the embedded XE markers during the import process. This saves you
from having to index in Word itself.

Here's the URL for DEXter: http://www.editorium.com/dexter.htm. You also
might be interested in reading my article on utilities for embedded
indexing in Word: http://www.luciehaskins.com/resources.shtml. (This
points to my Resources page where I have a variety of useful links. The
DEXter article is under the fourth heading down "Articles about
Utilities for Embedding in Word" and is titled "Digging in For the Long
Haul." It's in PDF format.)

Frame crashes on spell-check of one line of text

2006-05-25 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Ah, I knew you folks would have a solution. Thanks to Peter, Penelope, and
Fred who suggested the character style set to Language None.

Other solutions like variables (thanks Jessica) or insets might also work,
but this seemed the easiest and did work.

To add to the overall mystery (in case anyone is interested), the same text
worked fine in a new file created on my laptop, but that exact same file
crashed on my desktop system. Both have FM 7.0.

No matter, the char tag worked like a charm.

Thanks!!!

Hi, Linda:

Have you tried to:

* apply a character format of language None

* make it a variable

* add a non-breaking space at the beginning or end

* create it as a text flow on the reference page and import it as a text
inset

* create it in a text frame on the reference page and attach it to a
paragraph as frame below/above

* look up the fraction bar and use it instead of the backslash

numbering conundrum

2006-05-25 Thread Diane Gaskill
I had a similar numbering problem yesterday with one file out of 18 in a
book. (Must be the phase of the moon or something causing all these
numbering problems at once, huh?)

I'm using continued paragraph numbering in sub-chapter files. All of the
files in one section of the book worked except one. No matter what I did,
the first heading in that file stayed at 0.1 (heading text). It should have
been 4.7 (heading text) Retagging did not work, nor did re-importing all of
the formatting parameters into the file. Copying the text into a new doc
also did not work.At that point, I assumed there was something hidden in
the text that was causing the problem. The only solution I could find was
to delete the first heading, manually reenter the text, and retag the
heading.

So, my question to the list is: What can cause a heading to become corrupt?
I forgot to mention that these files are imported from Word. But remember,
all of them worked except one.

Thanks,

Diane

I had this problem too. To solve it, I turned on all conditions and
paragraph tags. I noticed that on the section that wasn't numbering
correctly, there was a weird symbol. So I converted the heading to Body
tag, saved the file, then re-applied the proper style. It fixed the
problem.

Subject: numbering conundrum

I have created a tag named SecID to identify sections in my book
chapters.
It is set to autonumber according to the following format: S:Section
<$chapnum>\=\sm. I have this tag set to start at the top of page and
I
auto-apply a Custom Master Page to the page that uses this Section ID.
This page is named SectionDivider. For sections 1 through 3, it is
working
just beautifully - I get a page with Section 7-1, a page with section
7-2
and page with Section 7-3. Now, all of a sudden, when I go to apply
this
tag to a page, the numbering is being reset to 7-1 and it won't change.
After counting beautifully to 7-3, all I get no matter where I apply
this
tag after Section 7-3 is Section 7-1. I don't get 7-4, 7-5, etc. and I
am
beyond stumped. If I had messed with the paragraph numbering to restart,

then ALL the tags should be appearing as Section 7-1, but like I said,
7-1
through 7-3 is working as expected.

Help - I am stumped and I don't know how to begin to troubleshoot this.
I
swear I am working with Word numbering!

Maybe Word's notoriously broken autonumbering is actually
contagious! Maybe it's mutating like avian flu to jump species?
It looks like I may have been more clever than I realized when
I used a Word-to-FrameMaker conversion process that stripped
all autonumber and bullet formatting from Word documents
before importing the content into FrameMaker.

I get an application error: 'The instruction at "0x0034199f" referenced
memory at "0x". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to
terminate the program."

I get the same message on my laptop in the same situation. Is this
common? Doesn't seem to lose or destroy anything.

And does everyone get the 'undo history will be lost' every time they
save or print?

Thanks

frame to pdf question

2006-05-25 Thread obai...@comcast.net
In the Frame Print Book dialog, I wanted to set things so one less paragraph
tag to get included in the PDF TOC. In the PDF Setup for selected files

box, thinking that would do it, as per usual.

Use File->Preferences->General to see the check box for "Show warnings
while clearing history" and the selector for "Once ..." or the "Always".

I have it set to show once (may go to none later). Much less painful
that way. :)

I can usually remember roughly where a similar frame already exists in
the body of the document and copy it from there, so I haven't
experimented with Ref pages. In the manuals I typically produce these
days, anchored frames with the same attributes usually come in runs,
for example, in the hookup section.

frame to pdf question

2006-05-25 Thread Ridder, Fred
