This is a well known problem and one of the major reasons to switch to Unicode
FrameMaker (=FM 8) as soon as possible.
If this is not an option for you, take a look at

Hi Yves,
These are problems that would probably require a FrameMaker 7.2 patch to
fix. With FrameMaker 8 released, this is not likely to happen. You may be
able to do something with FrameScript to clean things up.

Hi Framers,
Yes.
I recently moved all my 7.0 content to 8. I have one book that crashes
when it tries to build the Index. I removed the Index and the book
builds without a problem; replaced the Index and FM8 crashes.
I use the same ref pages in each index...Kelly.

Does the book specify character formats in the index markers? That is
likely to be the culprit. This is a rather nasty FrameMaker 8 bug.

Has anyone run into the infamous Scroll Back Bug in FM 8? (which was
nicely circumvented by Rick Quatro's runaroundnone.dll in FM7.2 and

Hi Carla,
I haven't had a chance to test this with FM 8. Even if the bug is fixed, the
plugin is still useful in that it automatically sets the Runaround property
to Don't Runaround for new imported graphics. If you use callouts on your
graphics, this feature alone is worthwhile.

Kamti,
Hard to say without looking at the template. Have you installed the 8.0.1
patch? It fixes a lot of bugs.

Hi, Yves:
You might consider creating a DOS batch file that runs periodically to

I'm using FrameMaker 7.2 with Acrobat 8. I create my PDFs using Save as PDF.

In two tests with existing books, the first (a long doc plan w/several

Hello Alan (and Kelly)
Kelly: your book's symptoms are exactly the same as mine: an unformatted
index (I believe) survives.
Alan: I shall check the char formats, but that's a good possibility.
Thanks.
Does anyone know if this has been reported? I've been having difficulty

Alan: forgot to ask whether this "nasty FM8 bug" is just in indexes, or do
char formats mess up elsewhere?
