FrameVector graphics

2008-09-28 Thread William Abernathy
Greetings, all.

I am the inheritor of a book that's got some FrameVector figures in it. I can't
figure out who put these in the document or why (my suspicion is that it was a
sloppy import, but I can't be sure). Anyway, about half of the signal arrow
names are inverted (upside-down) and I'd like to set them right if I can.

I can tell you that the figures list their object type as FrameVector with no
referenced file. They present themselves as unary graphical blobs, which do not
respond to my FrameMaker (7.2 on Win XP) graphics tools.

Is there any way to fix these? Can I export them to some other format? Or do I
have to redraw them from scratch?

TIA,

FrameVector is usually present in conjunction with another
format, either a vector format like WMF or possibly native
Frame vector objects. If you'd like to send me one of the
files off-list, in a .zip, I'll have a look and tell you
more about what you have.

More generally, it's always possible to export such graphics
in another format using Frame's native graphic export filters.
The demo version of Mif2Go will do that for you, for free:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm
In the User's Guide, see par. 29.2, Converting and exporting
graphics, for more considerations and instructions on that.

Importing files into FM8

2008-09-28 Thread Alan Litchfield
Hi all,

When importing multiple files into a new FM 8 book the files are entered in
precisely the reverse alpha-numeric order according to their file names.

They have been named Sect n1 Chap n2.fm so that each section is comprised of
more than one chapter. They are followed by Preface.fm, Glossary.fm,... that
get added in that order.

What needs to be done to change the order so that they are added in ascending
order, rather than descending?

Thanks
Alan

You are dragging them from an Explorer window, right? Try
reversing the name sequence in Explorer by clicking on the
Name header before you select them. When I do that here, I
get them added to the book in the same order as in the
Explorer window, regardless of how I select them (click/
shift-click or multiple ctrl-clicks).

RE: missing fonts after changing computers; customize maker.inifile? Can't find ini file

2008-09-28 Thread O'Laoghaire Micheal
Unfortunately, you should not believe Windows Explorer search when it
tells you it cannot find a particular file. I've had it tell me File
Not found when I am looking at the file in question right in the folder
where the search begins!

Did you see my response from yesterday afternoon? Here is the relevant
portion again:

---
The main maker.ini is right where it's always been -- the FM
installation folder -- and that's the one you probably want to make font
mapping changes in. There's another one for your personal settings, but
it's mainly for things like window sizes and positions, recent files,
etc. UserProfile is a variable referring to a specific user's
profile data, the location of which depends on the Windows version.

This is all explained on page 1 of the Customizing manual under the
heading Locating customization files. There's a table there that shows
you where UserProfile is for each Windows version.

Are you saying that a search of your hard drive turns up _zero_
instances of maker.ini? I don't think that's possible with a functioning
FM install.

But I could be wrong. It happened once before. ;-)

RE: Structure View Won't Appear

2008-09-28 Thread orandeep
You can use Windows keyboard commands to locate most boxes and applications
when they are 'off screen'. This often happens when you use a laptop with a 2nd
monitor at the base, and then undock it for a presentation or other portable
use. This stuff you want is on the 'other monitor'.
For most items, use the following:

Make the item active (click the icon, etc.)
Ctr-[spacebar]
m
[arrow key] (not the ones on the numeric keypad0
Move the mouse until the item appears. (Do not click a button0
When in view, click the left button.

Try this with any active item. This is not Frame specific.

However, the FrameMaker Structure View is different, and usually needs an
offshoot of this procedure. This issue that you cannot make the View active by
clicking the icon if you dlick somewhere else after the first time.
So close Frame, open it, click the icon once and do the above procedure. This
keeps the View active so that you can move it.
This procedure is for XP. Don't know if Vista works the same.

Backup folder in Frame 7.0?

2008-09-28 Thread jobs @ ProSpring
I like that FM can make a backup copy of files, but I don't like the backup
files cluttering up the same folder as the source files.

Is there any way to specify where FrameMaker 7.0 should create the backup
files?

I searched the documentation, the Internet, etc., but no joy.

The backup files aren't really backups. Once you understand what they
actually are it will become clear that they can only exist in the same
directory as the working source files.

The backup are actually the last saved version of the file but with a
new, secondary filename extension. When you select the Automatic
backup on save option, all that FrameMaker does when you do a Save
is rename the previous version of the file with a .bak extenstion rather
than flagging it for deletion by the OS. The backup is therefore always
one save behind the working file unless you go to the extra trouble of
making FrameMaker let you do two consecutive saves. If you save
frequenty, the differences between the .bak and the workng file may
not be major, but the .bak will *always* lack the last set of saved
changes.
