Re: Censorship alive and well on frameusers

Wow.

I saw the list transition as transparent, save for a moderated
message once and only once. I asked Lisa about it privately and she
told me it was a one-time deal due to moving over to the new list
platform.

Sounded fair to me.

It seems the noise being generated around this topic is more
politically focused than anything else...

Can we move on now?

Re: Numbered list item picks up from preceding nested list item

2005-11-22 Thread Stacie Knas
Thank you for your kind replies. As I said, this is my first EDD and
there's a lot I don't know so please bear with me. I set up the
numbering in the EDD (I want to minimize the available elements, and
instead have the properties governed by where they appear):

If level is 1:
...
If context is: {first}
   Numbering properties
  Autonumber format: n=1.\t
Else
   Numbering properties
  Autonumber format: n+.\t

Else, if level is: 2
   If context is: ul
  Numbering properties
 Autonumber format: \b\t
Else
   If context is: {first}
  Numbering properties
 Autonumber format: a=1.\t
Else
   Numbering properties
  Autonumber format: a+.\t

There's more to it, of course. There is no opportunity in the EDD
won't let me put in a letter with a colon, n: or a:. Hope this helps.

I'm doing it the EDD way so that no matter where a LI occurs, it will
be formatted correctly depending on where it is: numbered, bulleted,
first, middle, table (haven't figured that one out yet, had to create
a new element and para format), etc.

On 11/22/05, Etzel, Gary [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I think you need to change the numbering properties for the paragraph

you probably have something like the following as the autonumber format:
n:n+\t. In your second level OL, you need to change the n's to a different
letter, like this: a:\ta+\t. That will distinguish the first-level n
numbering scheme from the second level a numbering scheme.

 Dear Framers:

I am tweaking my first EDD (using the Structured Application
Developer's Guide) to get the levels and spacing right with list items
(LI) in ordered lists (OL) and unordered lists (UL) and various nested
combinations thereof, including depending on whether the list is
compact or non-compact. I am very pleased with what I have figured
out so far, it's working well, except for one thing: If I have an OL
nested in a LI in an OL, the LI that follows the nested OL picks up
 that OL's numbering, thus:

 6. Item a
 7. Item b

 a. item A
 b. item B
 c. item C

 4. Item c
 5. ...

It doesn't happen with unordered lists. My level rules seem fine, and
they work if they are not interrupted by a nested OL. I don't know
where else to look; can you point me to places I could investigate?
Thanks so much. This list is invaluable. Sorry I can't provide
answers yet, but I'm learning a lot.

should include an EmptyCounter building block (will display as )

Not that I'm aware of, but I can't say that I've really looked for them.

Any recommendatoins for creating XSL:FO templates (tools, open source
software, pitfalls)?

We need XSL:FO templates for both DocBook based and DITA based
applications.

Writing a complete XSL:FO for DocBook is theoretically impossible, as
the structure is endlessly recursive. In practical terms then, you need
to look at your documents for guidance about which contexts to code for.
If you have documents, you can use something like the 'Topologi
Professional Edition*' (http://www.topologi.com) to generate a list of
all of the existing XPaths, then only write rules for the contexts you
need to support.

If you don't have documents, I suggest you prune the structure of
DocBook ruthlessly, even to the point where you suspect that it will be
deficient for your documentation needs, then reinstate elements when and
where required based on request and justification. (Hopefully you've
already done this for your FrameMaker application.) If you sign up for
creating an XSL:FO stylesheet to comprehensively handle DocBook, you'll
find yourself on a hiding to nowhere.

* Topologi is a commercial product, but does have a 30 day free
download. My company does have an interest in it, so you should weigh my
advice accordingly.

PDF'd colored figures from FM to B/W?

2005-11-22 Thread Zimerman Orly
HI Everyone,
Does anyone have a clue why the following happens?

I have an FM file with a colored PDF figure (imported by Ref). (Don't ask why I
have the PDF figures and not tif or something more suitable, currrently, that's
what the client has).
The FM file looks fine.
Then, after I PDF the FM file (with the PDF figure/s) in it, my PDF figures
come out in black and white, but not colored. The rest of the PDF is fine,
including the other fig's (tif or eps or other).
I'm running FM 6 on Window 2000, acrobat 6 and/or 7 were used to create the PDF
with the same job options on all apps.

Any clues?
Thanks,

I have an FM file with a colored PDF figure (imported by Ref). (Don't ask why I
have the PDF figures and not tif or
something more suitable, currrently, that's what the client has).
The FM file looks fine.
Then, after I PDF the FM file (with the PDF figure/s) in it, my PDF figures
come out in black and white, but not colored. The
rest of the PDF is fine, including the other fig's (tif or eps or other).
I'm running FM 6 on Window 2000, acrobat 6 and/or 7 were used to create the PDF
with the same job options on all apps.

Any clues?
Thanks,
Orly.

When you import a PDF into FrameMaker, it is converted in the background to
EPS, and then the EPS result is used.

This conversion is not full-proof. I don't generally use PDF as a graphic
format, but I did come across color distortions in imported PDFs (and some
other abnormalities).

I recommend that you try the following: open the PDF figure in Acrobat,
export it to EPS from within Acrobat, and then import the EPS into FrameMaker.

Hi Caroline,
Get an upgrade to 7.1 and you won't need any add-in for mouse scrolling.
I'm not being facetious - I tried FreeWheel and a number of other
utilities with earlier Frame versions and never managed to get them to
work. Frame 7.1 comes with this feature embedded.

I have downloaded and successfully used the FreeWheel application to
get my mouse to scroll in FrameMaker.
Suddenly my mouse has stopped scrolling.
I tried to reinstall FreeWheel, but have found no solution.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
What other solution can you suggest for working with a mouse in

Bleed tabs - automation?

2005-11-22 Thread Steve Rickaby
Sarah O'Keefe and Sheila Loring's excellent FrameMaker 7 'complete reference'
book gives a method for setting up bleed tabs (thumbtabs) that requires manual
deletion of unnecessary tabs (i.e. all but the current chapter) in production
edit. Within structured FrameMaker, is there a way of automating this?

What is needed is a means of rendering objects visible/invisible depending on
their chapter number. Perhaps some way of making conditional tags sensitive to
their context in the book...?

Another approach I've tried is to include a rotated B flow flush to the page
edge and insert the bleed tabs as conditionalised anchored frames. This allows
tabs to be turned on and off with conditions, but I don't like these objects
being on body pages, and it doesn't get round the issue of making them
sensitive to chapter number.

Failing that, I guess it could be done using the feature for mapping master
pages to paragraphs, but I cannot see it working out very elegantly, as one
would have to hack some sort of 'hidden' mapping between chapter number and
paragraph tags.

Any ideas, anyone?

Numbered list item picks up from preceding nested list item

2005-11-22 Thread Stacie Knas
Dear Framers:

Frame 7.1, Windows XP Pro

I am tweaking my first EDD (using the Structured Application
Developer's Guide) to get the levels and spacing right with list items
(LI) in ordered lists (OL) and unordered lists (UL) and various nested
combinations thereof, including depending on whether the list is
compact or non-compact. I am very pleased with what I have figured
out so far, it's working well, except for one thing: If I have an OL
nested in a LI in an OL, the LI that follows the nested OL picks up
that OL's numbering, thus:

6. Item a
7. Item b

 a. item A
 b. item B
 c. item C

4. Item c
5. ?

It doesn't happen with unordered lists. My level rules seem fine, and
they work if they are not interrupted by a nested OL. I don't know
where else to look; can you point me to places I could investigate?
Thanks so much. This list is invaluable. Sorry I can't provide
answers yet, but I'm learning a lot.

2005-11-22 Thread Lester C. Smalley
You can include the number or letter followed by a colon, you simply
type the desired text into the EDD as content of the "Autonumber Format"
element.

However, I believe that you really want instead of designating these
items as different numbering series (which is what the A: or N: do) you
should include an EmptyCounter building block (will display as < > )
before your existing counter. One empty counter should be used for each
level of nesting, so a second-level list (first nested list) has one, a
third level list has two, etc.

For example:

If level is 1:
...
  If context is: {first}
Numbering properties
   Autonumber format:

for the month today. One of the documents is "Troubleshooting
Installation Problems." No mention of 64 being a special case.

Welcome to framers. This is a good place for questions. To make it easier,
though, next time, delete all of the messages from the digest except for
the one you're replying to.

As for your question, I'm not exactly sure what you want to do. What kind
of updating do you want to do on the markers? If you can be more specific,
I'm sure we can help you.

Graphics question

2005-11-22 Thread Grant Hogarth
Hi all...

A quick question before I chew up a day experimenting.

Is there any raster format (PNG TIFF, TGA, whatever) that preserves its
transparency when imported into FM?

I want to vignette a number of screen captures so that I only show the
area of discussion, but I don't want a hard crop, as that does not show
that the area in question is part of a larger object. I seem to remember
doing this via PS/EPS many years ago, but as I recall, that was a real
pain, and not terribly efficient. What I plan on creating is four "fade
to white" effect areas (Left, Top, Right, Bottom) that I can then
overlay on the base image.

Any input/suggestions gratefuly accepted.

Geez. Why don't you tell the listadmin instead of the whole list?

Graphics question

2005-11-22 Thread Carolyn Stallard
Grant, on Windows you can use SnagIt to crop with a fade: on
one, two, three, or all four sides. Other edge effects
available, also. (No connection with TechSmith, just a
satisfied customer.)

Graphics question

2005-11-22 Thread Grant Hogarth
Ah well... *sigh*
Yes, I can do it in Snagit.
I can also do it in Photoshop -- I was just trying to save some
time/brain strain.

Thanks!

Nope. See http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/317850.html
(Which isn't entirely correct, since transparency in EPS files is
supported by FM. You have to remember to select the imported EPS image,
and set the Fill to None. The transparency will not show up on-screen,
but will show correctly in PostScript printouts and generated PDFs.)

Bleed tabs - automation?

Sounds to me like a FrameScript (or plugin) job. I'm
sure Rick Quatro could cook
one up in minutes... either way. He does good work at
very reasonable prices. ;-)

Graphics question

2005-11-22 Thread Peter Gold
Grant:

If you need to do the same operation to the same
degree on all the graphics, consider creating a
batch process in PhotoShop on a directory of
files. You could write the originals to a
safe-keeping subfolder, or rename them, while
keeping the processed copies in the original
location.

Perhaps SnagIt offers a batch operation, too?
