FrameUsers: why don't the paragraph and character catalogs appear?
When I create a new FrameMaker document, the symbols representing the paragraph and character catalogs don't appear on the right side of the document. Why not? And, how can I display them? Common FM Files
It's seems like there are to basic methods for the headers and footers and different product names: 1 - To have one set of variables, and when working a book, apply a specific template to all the files with the correct variable definitions. This option would not require conditional text for the product name, just for sections that apply only to specific manuals. 2 - To have several variables, one for each product name. Put them all in each header or footer, and apply conditional text to each one. I originally was thinking of using option 1, but it seems pretty simple and stable to import only the variables from a separate file maybe called Template.fm, to all the file in the book (option 2). So I could have a variable called Footer and import the correct variable formats for each book before printing. -- Regards, Shmuel Wolfson ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

RE: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
Scott, I suggest that you have a variety of choices to accomplish publishing prices into a 1,000 page FrameMaker depending on your work flow needs, business processes, document requirements, and database (provided you have one). I am aware of the following companies that have tools/applications that work with FrameMaker to accomplish database publishing: Datalogics [DL Pager] (http://www.datalogics.com) Datazone Ltd. [Miramo] (http://www.miramo.com) Finite Matters Ltd. [PatternStream(R) and FrameScript(R)] (http://www.patternstream.com and http://www.framescript.com) Guidance [Catalogger] (http://www.guidance.nl) Mekon [FrameAC(R)] (http://www.mekon.co.uk/) Refined Reports [Unimerge] (Michael Mark 781-224-9887) Sabern [BookDB] (http://www.sabern.nl/dbp.html) Shared Content Solutions (http://www.databasepub.com) Each tool has its pros and cons, which I won't address here. Naturally, I'm very biased towards PatternStream and FrameScript. In addition to these applications and tools, you may also use the FrameMaker API (Frame Developers Kit - FDK) to develop a mission critical solution. On the Adobe web site, you will find a white paper entitled Database Publishing in Adobe FrameMaker 7.2 at http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/FM_DatabasePub.pdf. Disclaimers: (1) This list may not include all organizations that advertise database publishing solutions that work with FrameMaker and may contain some inaccuracies. There was no intent to leave anyone off the list or report in error. (2) I work for Finite Matters Ltd., the company that develops and sells PatternStream and FrameScript. PatternStream is patent number 6,282,539. As always, I'd be interested in learning of other database publishing service and product providers if anyone is aware of someone I've missed - or of an error that I have made in the list. BTW, can you describe how your company's CatalogConnectPro functions? Re: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
Scott, This is entirely possible through FrameScript (www.framescript.com). FrameScript is a programming language for automating FrameMaker operations. The product is cheap (~$150), but you would need to develop or purchase the FrameScript program to accomplish your task. FrameScript does provide direct database connectivity capabilities from FrameMaker. Other industrial-strength solutions for catalog automation include Miramo (www.miramo.com) and Pattern Stream (www.fml.com). -Alan Scott White wrote: Is there a way to import new prices for a 1,000-page catalog into a Framemaker document? Re: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
You've gotten plenty of suggestions. I assume that, presently, production of your catalog is being done in a manner that is incompatible with a full database publishing solution, otherwise the solution would be obvious. The FrameScript solution offered by Rick Quatro would seem to be the simplest and best one offered so far. But I propose two more alternate solutions: A. Strip out the embedded pricing, and instead create a separate pricing section in the catalog in which the products are listed in order by their part number. This new section could be easily and quickly generated from a database just before printing. B. There is a solution using UniMerge which would preserve the existing catalog structure with embedded pricing. To update the pricing, you'd perform the following steps: 1. Produce a database extract containing the following two character-delimited fields: PartNum,Price. 2. In the existing FrameMaker catalog document, replace the existing in-text price for each catalog item with the following UniMerge command: ^[IF (PartNum = 123) ^Price ^[END] where XYZ is the part number, and Price is the unit price for that part number. 3. After completing step 2, you save the modified FrameMaker catalog document in MIF format, creating a UniMerge template. 4. Finally, you execute UniMerge on that template, specifying as the data source the 2-field database extract described in step 1. This action causes UniMerge to merge the data from the database extract into a MIF file output which preserves all the formatting and content of the original MIF file, and updates the price UniMerge executes from the MS-DOS or UNIX command line. It costs about $750 on Windoze platforms. It doesn't run under the MAC OS. Ultimately, it may be possible for you to use UniMerge to generate the entire catalog, in which case you could radically reduce both your production time and production costs. I've been using UniMerge to produce catalogs, directories and other database-derived documents in FrameMaker since 1994. The user manual and other aids which come with the product are excellent. --- Scott White [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is there a way to import new prices for a 1,000-page catalog into a Framemaker document? Re: Changing Defaults on Tools Palette
I'd like to know the answer to this too. I've found that the tools palette settings reset to the default if you change the DPI of an image. This would be fine if I could set the default settings. As it stands now, what I do is apply the color and pen width to the graphic inside the anchored frame in addition to applying it to the anchored frame...then I can use the Pick up Object Properties function to restore the color and pen width to the tools palette. --Doug ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

Hi, Fred- Thanks for the reply. Sadly, we don't have FrameScript here, and actually I want to set the default properties on my TOOLS PALETTE, not on the imported graphic. I don't want to have to click the Fill Pattern to set it to None, and then set the line width, and then select the correct custom color EVERY time I want to add a callout or a circle to highlight something in the screenshot for the user to see. Dropping in graphic items that have specific characteristics is one of the things I like best about Auto-Text. Just create the item item with the characteristics you want, and copy it to the AutoText.fm document. For speed, assign a shortcut key. Then, every time you want to use the item, just select the graphic frame and type the shortcut key (or use the menu, whichever you prefer). Presto! The item will be dropped in, all formatted and ready for use. It's the only way I would ever do callouts. Since it's shareware, you can try Auto-Text to see how it works for you. There's a callout item included in the example AutoText.fm file. It's $10 for a single-user license. Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2
Can anyone let me know if documents created with v7.2 can be opened with v7.1 without having to mif them? We are presently using v7.1 and need to purchase more licenses. Presently, we do not have an XML requirement but it is under consideration. So my question is: if we start purchasing v7.2 licenses, do we have to upgrade the v7.1 stations at the same time, or can we do it only when XML becomes a requirement? Re: how to enlarge conditional text window
Hi Melissa, You can use a resource editor such as ResHacker or PE Module Explorer (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm). Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing 585-659-8267 www.frameexpert.com Hi, I'm sure I have seen this issue come up before...but can't seem to recall the answer. Is there any way to make the FrameMaker conditional text window or fields in the window bigger (either through programming, plug-in, or setting config file?)? Sometimes my cond text titles are too long and run into the border so that I cannot see the full title. I would prefer to just make the window bigger if it is at all possible. Any information on whether this is possible (and of course how) would be greatly appreciated. I'm on digest, so please copy my email on your reply. Thanks! Rick and Melissa: You can use a resource editor such as ResHacker or PE Module Explorer (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm). Make a backup copy of fmdlg.dll before you start hacking (but you knew this anyway, right?). I tried to do this just a week ago with FM 7.2 but FM complained when booting, then died. I don't know if the fmdlg.dll file has somehow changed. Mind you, I changed the relative positions of some of the buttons, etc. as well as generally enlarging the dialogue, so perhaps that was it. RE: how to enlarge conditional text window
I noted previously that most FM dialogs have both static and dynamic controls. If you resize the dialog box and move around the static controls, you risk damaging the dynamic behavior. Developers define static controls in resource files which get compiled into executables or DLLs. Developers generate dynamic controls as the program is running, by issuing Windows API calls. If you modify the static controls or the dialog box containing them, you may end up putting a static control at the same place a dynamic control is supposed to appear.
-- Regards, Shmuel Wolfson

Hi, Scott: In addition to the several proprietary database applications that can manage this, you might want to search for "Database Publishing" in "MIF_Reference.pdf" in the OnlineManuals directory of your FrameMaker installation. Hi Scott, You could have a FrameScript script do a lookup for each part number in a database (or spreadsheet) and replace the current price with what is returned from the database. Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
On the Adobe web site, you will find a white paper entitled "Database Publishing in Adobe FrameMaker 7.2" at http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/FM_DatabasePub.pdf. Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
-Alan Scott White wrote: > Is there a way to import new prices for a 1,000-page catalog into a > Framemaker document? > We do many large catalogs here, some with and some without pricing, and a > potential customer wanted to know if they could update embedded pricing just > before the files go to press. Importing Pricing ino Frame Document
Strip out the "embedded" pricing, and instead create a separate pricing section in the catalog in which the products are listed in order by their part number. --- Scott White wrote: > Is there a way to import new prices for a 1,000-page > catalog into a > Framemaker document? > We do many large catalogs here, some with and some > without pricing, and a > potential customer wanted to know if they could > update embedded pricing just > before the files go to press. All of the tags are in one file. This simple book has only a Cover, TOC, and Chapter. This is a new FM 7.2 installation and all of the documents created thus far are new. There is no template (yet). Hi Deb, Voila! If you have FrameScript, list member Rick Quatro has a script in his Super Web Bundle that should do what you need: DefaultGraphicProps. Sets default properties for imported graphics and the anchored frames that contain them. This is an event script that runs automatically, immediately after a graphic is imported. See http://frameexpert.com/scripts/superwebbundle.htm or contact Rick for more information. My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel. You can download it from: http://www.siliconprairiesoftware.com Steve

how to enlarge conditional text window
Hi, I'm sure I have seen this issue come up before...but can't seem to recall the answer. Thanks! Melissa
Thanks, Richard

I noted previously that most FM dialogs have both static and dynamic controls. If you resize the dialog box and move around the static controls, you risk damaging the dynamic behavior. Developers define static controls in "resource files" which get compiled into executables or DLLs. Developers generate dynamic controls as the program is running, by issuing Windows API calls. If you modify the static controls or the dialog box containing them, you may end up putting a static control at the same place a dynamic control is supposed to appear.
