FrameUsers: why don't the paragraph and character catalogs appear?

2006-08-15 Thread Roger Chapanis
When I create a new FrameMaker document, the symbols representing the
paragraph and character catalogs don't appear on the right side of the
document. Why not? And, how can I display them?

Common FM Files

2006-08-15 Thread Shmuel Wolfson

It's seems like there are to basic methods for the headers and footers and
   different product names:
1 - To have one set of variables, and when working a book, apply a specific
template to all the files with the correct variable definitions. This option
would not require conditional text for the product name, just for sections
that apply only to specific manuals.
2 - To have several variables, one for each product name. Put them all in
each header or footer, and apply conditional text to each one.
I originally was thinking of using option 1, but it seems pretty simple and
stable to import only the variables from a separate file maybe called
Template.fm, to all the file in the book (option 2). So I could have a
variable called Footer and import the correct variable formats for each book
   before printing.

Need help with cross-reference to a figure

Hi Framers,

Frame 7.0p576

I am trying to create a cross-reference to a figure that would read
...see Figure 5-2, The Test Environment, on page 5-7.

The numbering in my figure paragraph tag is
F:Figure $chapnum-n+1\sn

For the cross-reference, I have the following:
see Figure $chapnum-?, $paratext, on page $chapnum-
$pagenum.

Any suggests as to what I should replace the question makrs with so it
picks up the figure number?

Many thanks.

Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

Hi, Scott:

In addition to the several proprietary database applications that can
manage this, you might want to search for Database Publishing in
MIF_Reference.pdf in the OnlineManuals directory of your FrameMaker
installation.

RE: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Ben Slone
Scott,

I suggest that you have a variety of choices to accomplish publishing
prices into a 1,000 page FrameMaker depending on your work flow needs,
business processes, document requirements, and database (provided you
have one). I am aware of the following companies that have
tools/applications that work with FrameMaker to accomplish database
publishing:

Datalogics [DL Pager] (http://www.datalogics.com)
Datazone Ltd. [Miramo] (http://www.miramo.com)
Finite Matters Ltd. [PatternStream(R) and FrameScript(R)]
(http://www.patternstream.com and http://www.framescript.com)
Guidance [Catalogger] (http://www.guidance.nl)
Mekon [FrameAC(R)] (http://www.mekon.co.uk/)
Refined Reports [Unimerge] (Michael Mark 781-224-9887)
Sabern [BookDB] (http://www.sabern.nl/dbp.html)
Shared Content Solutions (http://www.databasepub.com)

Each tool has its pros and cons, which I won't address here. Naturally,
I'm very biased towards PatternStream and FrameScript. In addition to
these applications and tools, you may also use the FrameMaker API (Frame
Developers Kit - FDK) to develop a mission critical solution.

On the Adobe web site, you will find a white paper entitled Database
Publishing in Adobe FrameMaker 7.2 at
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/FM_DatabasePub.pdf.

Disclaimers:

(1) This list may not include all organizations that advertise database
publishing solutions that work with FrameMaker and may contain some
inaccuracies. There was no intent to leave anyone off the list or report
in error.

(2) I work for Finite Matters Ltd., the company that develops and sells
PatternStream and FrameScript. PatternStream is patent number 6,282,539.

As always, I'd be interested in learning of other database publishing
service and product providers if anyone is aware of someone I've missed
- or of an error that I have made in the list.

BTW, can you describe how your company's CatalogConnectPro functions?

Thanks,

Re: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Alan Houser

Scott,

This is entirely possible through FrameScript (www.framescript.com).
FrameScript is a programming language for automating FrameMaker
operations. The product is cheap (~$150), but you would need to develop
or purchase the FrameScript program to accomplish your task. FrameScript
does provide direct database connectivity capabilities from FrameMaker.

Other industrial-strength solutions for catalog automation include
Miramo (www.miramo.com) and Pattern Stream (www.fml.com).

Re: Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Daniel Emory
You've gotten plenty of suggestions. I assume that,
presently, production of your catalog is being done in
a manner that is incompatible with a full database
publishing solution, otherwise the solution would be
obvious.

The FrameScript solution offered by Rick Quatro would
seem to be the simplest and best one offered so far.

But I propose two more alternate solutions:

A. Strip out the embedded pricing, and instead
create a separate pricing section in the catalog in
which the products are listed in order by their part
number. This new section could be easily and quickly
generated from a database just before printing.

B. There is a solution using UniMerge which would
preserve the existing catalog structure with embedded
pricing. To update the pricing, you'd perform the
following steps:

1. Produce a database extract containing the following
two character-delimited fields:

PartNum,Price.

2. In the existing FrameMaker catalog document,
replace the existing in-text price for each catalog
item with the following UniMerge command:

^[IF (PartNum = 123) ^Price ^[END]
where XYZ is the part number, and Price is the unit
price for that part number.

3. After completing step 2, you save the modified
FrameMaker catalog document in MIF format, creating a
UniMerge template.

4. Finally, you execute UniMerge on that template,
specifying as the data source the 2-field database
extract described in step 1. This action causes
UniMerge to merge the data from the database extract
into a MIF file output which preserves all the
formatting and content of the original MIF file, and
updates the price

UniMerge executes from the MS-DOS or UNIX command
line. It costs about $750 on Windoze platforms. It
doesn't run under the MAC OS.

Ultimately, it may be possible for you to use UniMerge
to generate the entire catalog, in which case you
could radically reduce both your production time and
production costs.

I've been using UniMerge to produce catalogs,
directories and other database-derived documents in
FrameMaker since 1994. The user manual and other aids
which come with the product are excellent.

RE: Format A Auto-numbering

2006-08-15 Thread Lorraine Kiewiet
Hi Deb,
Voila! The two Figure paragraph tags' Numbering tabs, preceding the offending
table show this:

T:Figure n+:

I made them F:Figure n+ instead, and the table is now:

T:Table n+:

What is puzzling is that I wasn't using the series T: for table. I was simply
using Table n+: with no series label. I guess the T of Table was picked up
anyway.

Thanks so much! Are you offering a training course? ;-)

The offending paragraph doesn't necessarily have the TableTitle
paragraph format applied to it. You need to check EVERY paragraph, even
those that aren't part of a table. It could be a heading or a body
paragraph, or an anchor paragraph used for the tables or graphics.

I'd insert the same type of table at the very beginning of the chapter.
If the table title numbering is 1, then you know it's something in
between the start of the chapter and the bad table. Arrow down from
there until you find it.

You might also try updating the book, making sure that it is set to
update the numbering in the book.

I'll be out for a few hours today, but if you want to send me the file I
can certainly take a look at it for you.

This all checks out. The offending table is very near the
beginning of the chapter. so it was quick to check with the
up-arrow technique. Preceding the bad table are tables
used for Warning and Caution. None of these use TableTitle,
even if I chose to show a Title for these tables, which I don't.

 Lorraine,
What I normally do in this situation is to open the
 Paragraph Designer
and select the Numbering tab. Then place the insertion point just
before the incorrectly numbered para, and press the arrow up
 key to go
from paragraph to paragraph, watching the Numbering tab in each
paragraph. There is most likely a paragraph somewhere that
 is using the
autonumber series, even if it doesn't display the number.

Also, since you do appear to have a book, make sure from the book
window that the Paragraph Numbering in the Chapter file is set to

If you don't specify a numbering track (F or T), FM uses an unlabeled
default... which was probably what was happening.

Voila! The two Figure paragraph tags' Numbering tabs, preceding the offending

I made them F:Figure n+ instead, and the table is now:

What is puzzling is that I wasn't using the series T: for table. I was simply using
Table n+: with no series label. I guess the T of Table was picked up anyway.

Thanks so much! Are you offering a training course? ;-)

Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread Lin Surasky
Hi all-

I RTFMed and still didn't find what I was looking for, so I turn to the
gurus of the list...

I'm working on screenshot replacement for a large project and want to
set some defaults on the Tools Palette (specifically, the pen width,
fill pattern, and color) so it's faster for me to draw the circles and
callouts over the screenshots as I do them. I can't find anything in the
.ini file that handles this, beyond changing the pen width options so
that the value I want is the smallest size in the list.

Anyone?

Thanks!

Re: Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread Doug

I'd like to know the answer to this too. I've found that the tools
palette settings reset to the default if you change the DPI of an
image. This would be fine if I could set the default settings. As it
stands now, what I do is apply the color and pen width to the graphic
inside the anchored frame in addition to applying it to the anchored
frame...then I can use the Pick up Object Properties function to
restore the color and pen width to the tools palette.

If you have FrameScript, list member Rick Quatro has a script in his

DefaultGraphicProps. Sets default properties for imported

This is an event script that runs automatically, immediately

Thanks for the reply. Sadly, we don't have FrameScript here, and

highlight something in the screenshot for the user to see.

Re: Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread steve
Dropping in graphic items that have specific characteristics is one of the
things I like best about Auto-Text. Just create the item item with the
characteristics you want, and copy it to the AutoText.fm document. For
speed, assign a shortcut key.

Then, every time you want to use the item, just select the graphic frame
and type the shortcut key (or use the menu, whichever you prefer). Presto!
The item will be dropped in, all formatted and ready for use. It's the
only way I would ever do callouts.

Since it's shareware, you can try Auto-Text to see how it works for you.
There's a callout item included in the example AutoText.fm file. It's $10
for a single-user license.

You can download it from:

JOB: Technical Writer - Contract - Emeryville, CA (Bay Area Candidates Only)

2006-08-15 Thread Jobs at ProSpring

TW-900 Technical Writer - Contract - Emeryville, CA (Bay Area Candidates Only)
Length: 6+ months
Bill rate: BOE

A software developer needs someone to document a large medical billing system.

We don't have many details about the project, only that it needs to
be completed by 1Q 2007. So, the first thing you will need to do in
the contract is to create a scope out the project and deliverables
and create a document plan..

The client didn't mention an authoring tool, so you will probably
need to recommend a tool (FrameMaker?) as part of the doc plan
processes. Ditto for an online help tool (if needed).

Note: The job can be done remotely with meetings on-site as needed.

Requirements:

o. Experience scoping and managing large documentation projects (Required)

o. Experience documenting large software systems (Required)

o. Prior experience documenting medical software a plus

Other notes:

o. Authorized US workers only

o. We don't have a published bill rate for this project, so please

Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2

2006-08-15 Thread Richard Pesant
Can anyone let me know if documents created with v7.2 can be opened with
v7.1 without having to mif them? We are presently using v7.1 and need to
purchase more licenses. Presently, we do not have an XML requirement but
it is under consideration. So my question is: if we start purchasing
v7.2 licenses, do we have to upgrade the v7.1 stations at the same time,
or can we do it only when XML becomes a requirement?

Thanks,

Hi,
I'm sure I have seen this issue come up before...but can't seem to recall
the answer.

Is there any way to make the FrameMaker conditional text window or fields
in

the window bigger (either through programming, plug-in, or setting config
file?)? Sometimes my cond text titles are too long and run into the
border
so that I cannot see the full title. I would prefer to just make the
window

bigger if it is at all possible. Any information on whether this is
possible (and of course how) would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on digest, so please copy my email on your reply.

Thanks!

RE: how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-15 Thread Joe Malin
I noted previously that most FM dialogs have both static and dynamic
controls. If you resize the dialog box and move around the static
controls, you risk damaging the dynamic behavior.

Developers define static controls in resource files which get compiled
into executables or DLLs. Developers generate dynamic controls as the
program is running, by issuing Windows API calls. If you modify the
static controls or the dialog box containing them, you may end up
putting a static control at the same place a dynamic control is supposed
to appear.

Yes. It certainly is Monday, and I've switched from coffee to iced tea
and it must not have as much caffeine.

The first table is autonumbering itself "Table 2:" Not Table 1.

In a new, blank document, autonumbering of tables in Format A and
Format B is working fine. That's why I think I inadvertently did
"something" but for the life of me cannot find how I "broke" it.

Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

Is there a way to import new prices for a 1,000-page catalog into a

We do many large catalogs here, some with and some without pricing, and a
potential customer wanted to know if they could update embedded pricing just
before the files go to press. I thought I would ask the question.
Thanks.

Hi, Scott:

In addition to the several proprietary database applications that can
manage this, you might want to search for "Database Publishing" in

Hi Scott,

You could have a FrameScript script do a lookup for each part number in a
database (or spreadsheet) and replace the current price with what is
returned from the database.

Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Ben Slone
Scott,

I suggest that you have a variety of choices to accomplish publishing
prices into a 1,000 page FrameMaker depending on your work flow needs,
business processes, document requirements, and database (provided you
have one). I am aware of the following companies that have
tools/applications that work with FrameMaker to accomplish database
publishing:

Datalogics [DL Pager] (http://www.datalogics.com)
Datazone Ltd. [Miramo] (http://www.miramo.com)
Finite Matters Ltd. [PatternStream(R) and FrameScript(R)]
(http://www.patternstream.com and http://www.framescript.com)
Guidance [Catalogger] (http://www.guidance.nl)
Mekon [FrameAC(R)] (http://www.mekon.co.uk/)
Refined Reports [Unimerge] (Michael Mark 781-224-9887)
Sabern [BookDB] (http://www.sabern.nl/dbp.html)
Shared Content Solutions (http://www.databasepub.com)

Each tool has its pros and cons, which I won't address here. Naturally,
I'm very biased towards PatternStream and FrameScript. In addition to
these applications and tools, you may also use the FrameMaker API (Frame
Developers Kit - FDK) to develop a mission critical solution.

On the Adobe web site, you will find a white paper entitled "Database
Publishing in Adobe FrameMaker 7.2" at
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/pdfs/FM_DatabasePub.pdf.

Thanks,

Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Alan Houser
Scott,

This is entirely possible through FrameScript (www.framescript.com).
FrameScript is a programming language for automating FrameMaker
operations. The product is cheap (~$150), but you would need to develop
or purchase the FrameScript program to accomplish your task. FrameScript
does provide direct database connectivity capabilities from FrameMaker.

Other industrial-strength solutions for catalog automation include
Miramo (www.miramo.com) and Pattern Stream (www.fml.com).

Importing Pricing ino Frame Document

2006-08-15 Thread Daniel Emory
You've gotten plenty of suggestions. I assume that,
presently, production of your catalog is being done in
a manner that is incompatible with a full database
publishing solution, otherwise the solution would be
obvious.

The FrameScript solution offered by Rick Quatro would
seem to be the simplest and best one offered so far.

But I propose two more alternate solutions:

A. Strip out the "embedded" pricing, and instead
create a separate pricing section in the catalog in
which the products are listed in order by their part
number. This new section could be easily and quickly
generated from a database just before printing.

B. There is a solution using UniMerge which would
preserve the existing catalog structure with embedded
pricing. To update the pricing, you'd perform the
following steps:

1. Produce a database extract containing the following
two character-delimited fields:

PartNum,Price.

2. In the existing FrameMaker catalog document,
replace the existing in-text price for each catalog
item with the following UniMerge command:

^[IF (PartNum = 123) ^Price ^[END]
where XYZ is the part number, and Price is the unit
price for that part number.

3. After completing step 2, you save the modified
FrameMaker catalog document in MIF format, creating a
UniMerge template.

4. Finally, you execute UniMerge on that template,
specifying as the data source the 2-field database
extract described in step 1. This action causes
UniMerge to merge the data from the database extract
into a MIF file output which preserves all the
formatting and content of the original MIF file, and
updates the price

UniMerge executes from the MS-DOS or UNIX command
line. It costs about $750 on Windoze platforms. It
doesn't run under the MAC OS.

Ultimately, it may be possible for you to use UniMerge
to generate the entire catalog, in which case you
could radically reduce both your production time and
production costs.

I've been using UniMerge to produce catalogs,
directories and other database-derived documents in
FrameMaker since 1994. The user manual and other aids
which come with the product are excellent.

All of the tags are in one file. This simple book has only a Cover, TOC, and
Chapter.
This is a new FM 7.2 installation and all of the documents created thus far are
new. There is no template (yet). When I get this straightened out I'll create

Format A Auto-numbering

Hi Deb,
Voila! The two Figure paragraph tags' Numbering tabs, preceding the offending
table show this:

T:Figure :

I made them F:Figure instead, and the table is now:

T:Table :

What is puzzling is that I wasn't using the series T: for table. I was simply
using "Table : with no series label. I guess the T of Table was picked up
anyway.

Thanks so much! Are you offering a training course? ;-)

T:Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread Ridder, Fred
If you have FrameScript, list member Rick Quatro has a script in his
Super Web Bundle that should do what you need:

DefaultGraphicProps. Sets default properties for imported
graphics and the anchored frames that contain them.
This is an event script that runs automatically, immediately
after a graphic is imported.
See http://frameexpert.com/scripts/superwebbundle.htm or contact
Rick for more information.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Subject: Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

Anyone?

Thanks!

Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread Lin Surasky
Hi, Fred-

Thanks for the reply. Sadly, we don't have FrameScript here, and
actually I want to set the default properties on my TOOLS PALETTE, not
on the imported graphic. I don't want to have to click the Fill Pattern
to set it to None, and then set the line width, and then select the
correct custom color EVERY time I want to add a callout or a circle to
highlight something in the screenshot for the user to see.

Regards
Lin

Changing Defaults on Tools Palette

2006-08-15 Thread st...@siliconprairiesoftware.com

2006-08-15 Thread Jobs@ProSpring

Other notes:

o. Authorized US workers only

o. We don't have a published bill rate for this project, so please
state your bill rate when applying.

o. Questions? Call us at 888-378-2333

o. To be considered, apply here:

how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-15 Thread Melissa Clark
 Hi,
I'm sure I have seen this issue come up before...but can't seem to recall
the answer.

Is there any way to make the FrameMaker conditional text window or fields in
the window bigger (either through programming, plug-in, or setting config
file?)? Sometimes my cond text titles are too long and run into the border
so that I cannot see the full title. I would prefer to just make the window
bigger if it is at all possible. Any information on whether this is
possible (and of course how) would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on digest, so please copy my email on your reply.

Thanks!
 Melissa

Compatibility between FM7.1 and 7.2

2006-08-15 Thread Richard Pesant
Can anyone let me know if documents created with v7.2 can be opened with
v7.1 without having to mif them? We are presently using v7.1 and need to
purchase more licenses. Presently, we do not have an XML requirement but
it is under consideration. So my question is: if we start purchasing
v7.2 licenses, do we have to upgrade the v7.1 stations at the same time,
or can we do it only when XML becomes a requirement?

Thanks,

Richard

No...7.1 and 7.2 live together very well. We have, betwen us and the
mother ship, maybe 40 users and we don't know or care who has which,
when it comes to trading files.

how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Melissa,

You can use a resource editor such as ResHacker or PE Module Explorer
(http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm).

how to enlarge conditional text window

2006-08-15 Thread Joe Malin
I noted previously that most FM dialogs have both static and dynamic
controls. If you resize the dialog box and move around the static
controls, you risk damaging the dynamic behavior.

Developers define static controls in "resource files" which get compiled
into executables or DLLs. Developers generate dynamic controls as the
program is running, by issuing Windows API calls. If you modify the
static controls or the dialog box containing them, you may end up
putting a static control at the same place a dynamic control is supposed
to appear.

Make a backup copy of fmdlg.dll before you start hacking (but you knew
this anyway, right?). I tried to do this just a week ago with FM 7.2
but
FM complained when booting, then died. I don't know if the fmdlg.dll
file
has somehow changed. Mind you, I changed the relative positions of some

of the buttons, etc. as well as generally enlarging the dialogue, so
perhaps that was it. Has anybody successfully hacked FM 7.2 dialogues?

s and info.
