All the fonts are in the Classic fonts folder, and this is referenced in

Monotype tech support have accepted this and are looking into it. (Linotype is

I appreciate that the same font is often available from different suppliers,

However, in the case the font and foundry are specified by the publisher.

I'm sorry, but that's just not true. Save As PDF most definitely uses
Distiller. It's just that Adobe decided a while back (Acrobat 6, I
believe) to change the name of the Windows printer instance from Acrobat
Distiller to Adobe PDF. But it's still Distiller doing the, um,
distilling of the PS.

As for the problems people have with Save As PDF, most of them would
disappear if FM were always pointed to the Adobe PDF printer instead of
to whatever the system's default physical printer is. The SetPrint
plugin from Sundorne (www.sundorne.com) can take care of that.

Re: [fmforosx] RE: Dreaded Distiller barf - fixed, sort of

2009-03-04 Thread Steve Rickaby
It was a bad font... this from MonoType:

I had one of our type engineers review it and it appears that we had
updated this font back in 2006 but for whatever reason the data has not
been updated on the website? So not only has the font data been rebuilt,
it has been updated.

The original reason for the fix was to do with Adobe InDesign and how it
picks up the name to display the font. InDesign was not displaying the
font correctly and it could not print it. Based on that Distiller may
also have issues ripping the data due to the old naming method.

I have also forwarded the data onto my colleagues in the US to update
the website.

However, in the plethora of font cache cleaning and PRAM zapping that has been
going on here today, Distiller has somehow caught my cold. Now, for any Ps file
(*not* specific to Sabon), it crashes - which it has *never* done before -
while saving the PDF after distillation. This problem definitely did not exist
yesterday.

And, to make it even weirder, it only does this for some job options and not
others. For example:

Standard: crashes

Smallest file size: crashes

Press: crashes

High quality: crashes

PDFX-1a: creates PDF ok

PDFX-3: creates PDF ok

Publisher's custom joboptions: creates PDF ok

Any theme here?

Re: Backing Up in Advance of TCS 2 Installation

2009-03-04 Thread Art Campbell
As far as I know, the only applications in TCS2 that can't be
installed multiple times are RoboHelp and Acrobat. Frame's not a
problem; you can have multiples with different revs on a system.

So those you may want to back up or ghost. However, if they're
uninstalled, the associated registry entries are likely to be
wiped so that could create a problem if you need to roll back.

Otherwise, I believe all info is stored either in the data files or
user preferences, which should carry forward.

Diff Comparison between FrameMaker and Word

2009-03-04 Thread Joseph
Hi all,

I have a FrameMaker/Word question. There’s a 600-page Word document that my
team converted into a FrameMaker book. This document is in English, it
needs to be translated into Japanese. The translators have asked about tools
to perform a diff comparison between the two (ie find out what is different
between the two documents).

We have come up with the following options. Can you let me know if there are
any others?

•Convert both frame files and word file to RTF
•Use Mif2go
•Export the FM book and Word file to PDF. Perform a PDF comparison.

Are you asking what is different between the Word doc and the Frame doc?
Or, are you asking what is different between English and Japanese
versions? I'm not sure what exactly your translators want to know.

Your Word and Frame docs should have the same content. It's the software
tool and the file formats that are different. Experienced, reputable
translation companies should know how to verify the translation.

Richard is correct in that Adobe changed the name of the printer
instance, and you should always be using that as your default printer
for FrameMaker. That might make Save As PDF function as you wish.

However, it is not the Distiller application. That application is the
sure way of making all the functions behave correctly.

Re: Diff Comparison between FrameMaker and Word

2009-03-04 Thread Art Campbell
Joseph,

I think the problem you're facing is separating the content changes
from the formatting.Because all the formatting has changed, I think
most of not all the book would be identified as changed even if the
content is unchanged.

So I'd think about exporting each of the drafts to text and trying to
compare those.

***
That said, the translation companies I've dealt with would do that
themselves as part of their workflow. You may be offering to, or they
may be trying to get you to do some of the work for them in order to
reduce costs But if your process omits stuff by mistake or
includes too much, it's going to effect the end quality. So I'd be
very careful doing it yourself instead of having them do it.

Please pardon my rant below ... not your personal fault at all! But,

Is this still true for FrameMaker 9? (I have not checked this yet for
the trial version that I install a few days onto a Windows 7 system
here).

If still true, *when* should we expect it to happen? Frankly, the
inability to easily and reliably generate PDF from FrameMaker is
something that has been present far too long! And this issue needed to
be addressed *way* sooner than the fancy front-end that has been
released in FrameMaker 9. It is one of my pet peeves with FrameMaker
although I love the *program* otherwise (been using it - off and on -
since 1988 on a Sun 3/50)!

When I went back to using FrameMaker some years back, *every* time I
have done a FrameMaker version upgrade (from 6.0 to my current 8.0 -
every version!), I have had to reset the parameters and options I use
for the PDF generation process with Acrobat (also have all recent
versions). For the *same* set of books - and the settings are different
for each book! This last time, I had to turn Paragraph Tags on for one
large document for the process to work with FrameMaker 8 - the last
time, I had to turn it off for FM 7.2 for the very same document. To
avoid FrameMaker crashes or correctly generate the PDF output (without
missing tables or duplicated pages containing long tables)! I suspect
that I will have to do it again with FrameMaker 9 when I get there. :(

And, even now, with FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat 9, when I generate a PDF
from one of my documents, it still annoys me that I have to open the PDF
output in Acrobat and set properties that I *should* be able to feed
into it from FrameMaker. Better integration of FrameMaker and Acrobat
and/or far more control of the PDF generation from FrameMaker would be a
real blessing! Since I do relatively frequent PDF generation (it is for
specifications that tend to change relatively often, and I send out
review copies in PDF format), this just adds delays and occasional
oops, forgot to set the property moments!
[/rant]

So ... the real QUESTION: when do you/Adobe expect the Adobe FrameMaker
software developers to learn how to use the Acrobat SDK, libraries,
etc., and do it right? Please feel free to pass the question on to
whoever is in charge of FrameMaker development!

Carol,
In the Find\Change dialog, enter ' \p', without the single quotes. That is
'space backslash lowercase p'. This will find all occurrences of a space
preceding an end of paragraph.

In the Find/Change dialog, enter ' \r', without the single quotes. That is

RE: searching for a section symbol

2009-03-04 Thread Alan Litchfield
Carol,

As I understand it there is no dialog operator to find that. I guess that is
the case because it is 'outside' the text flow and therefore is not searched
as a 'text symbol'. Your best option is to search for end-of-paragraph
symbols.

If however you are seeking to navigate to the end of a flow of text, I think
there is a way to move the Insertion Point to the end of a flow (IPEndOfFlow)
but I can't think of it at the moment. It may be neccesary for you to define a
keyboard command for this action(?).

Information on Customizing FrameMaker's behaviour can be found here:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/8.0/customize_frame.pdf

(Sorry, you didn't say which version).

Dreaded Distiller barf... it was the font

2009-03-04 Thread Steve Rickaby
Sincere thanks to everyone who's responded to this, and particularly Baruch and
Philippe, who got there just ahead of me.

Eliminate one thing at a time... The only unusual thing about this file for me
is that it uses a new - to this site - font, Sabon. I purchased Sabon MT from
fonts.com as a PostScript Type 1 and installed it in Classic as normal.

Changing all the Sabon in the test file to Times causes the file to distill as
expected. I tried this again with Officina Serif, and the same results.

Sabon MT is a brand new font, so no possibility of corruption, surely?

I will take this up with Monotype support, but if anyone has an idea as to what
might be happening I'd be glad to hear. I have never seen this problem caused
by a font in, oh, er... eighteen years of using FrameMaker.

Philippe: I don't have the option of using another font, sadly - the designs
are dictated by the publishers.

All the fonts are in the Classic fonts folder, and this is referenced in
Distiller. Distiller is 'seeing' the font ok, it's just something about the
font that is causing it to crash.

Monotype tech support have accepted this and are looking into it. (Linotype is
now owned by Monotype).

I appreciate that the same font is often available from different suppliers,
and that this can sometimes cause problems, It certainly has caused me problems
in the past, in my case with multiple but incompatible versions of Frutiger.
However, in the case the font and foundry are specified by the publisher.

Importing FM content to Flare - Changing image import location

Hi Jon,

I see that I can filter the view, so it makes it easier to select the

future release (I'm working in v4.2). I would like to be able to choose the
location for importing the graphics.

FM 8 no longer generating PDFs with bookmarks for the Acrobat Bookmarks pane

2009-03-04 Thread qui...@airmail.net
Avi,

Don't use the Save as PDF. Print to a PS file and distill that. The Save
As PDF function is problematic. If you have Distiller open and print the
PS file to a watched folder, then it will automatically begin distilling
once the file is present. Additionally, Save As PDF doesn't use the
Distiller application.

It's a good feature request. I'll send it on. Make sure you submit it too,
using the Feature request on the Start page in Flare.

You can move the graphics after the import. If you need help, send me an

Backing Up in Advance of TCS 2 Installation

2009-03-04 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I'm getting ready to install the TCS 2 trial that arrived (at last!) two
days ago, and I'm doing so with the awareness that's there's always the
possibility we may have to revert to our present configuration. With
that in mind, what files would you advise as essential to back up in
advance? Would you also, or instead, advise a f ull system backup first?
Any insights appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

[fmforosx] RE: Dreaded Distiller barf - fixed, sort of

It was a bad font... this from MonoType:

However, in the plethora of font cache cleaning and PRAM zapping that has been
going on here today, Distiller has somehow caught my cold. Now, for any Ps file
(*not* specific to Sabon), it crashes - which it has *never* done before -
while saving the PDF after distillation. This problem definitely did not exist
yesterday.

And, to make it even weirder, it only does this for some job options and not
others. For example:

Standard: crashes

Smallest file size: crashes

Press: crashes

High quality: crashes

PDFX-1a: creates PDF ok

PDFX-3: creates PDF ok

Publisher's custom joboptions: creates PDF ok

Any theme here?

Backing Up in Advance of TCS 2 Installation

There?s a 600-page Word document that my
team converted into a FrameMaker book. This document is in English, it
needs to be translated into Japanese. The translators have asked about tools
to perform a diff comparison between the two (ie find out what is different
between the two documents).

We have come up with the following options. Can you let me know if there are
any others?

?Convert both frame files and word file to RTF
?Use Mif2go
?Export the FM book and Word file to PDF. Perform a PDF comparison.

Diff Comparison between FrameMaker and Word

2009-03-04 Thread Karen L. Zorn

Diff Comparison between FrameMaker and Word

2009-03-04 Thread Art Campbell
Joseph,

I think the problem you're facing is separating the content changes
from the formatting.Because all the formatting has changed, I think
most of not all the book would be identified as "changed" even if the
content is unchanged.

FM 8 no longer generating PDFs with bookmarks for the AcrobatBookmarks pane

2009-03-04 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
Hi, Dov.

Please pardon my rant below ... not your personal fault at all! But,
Adobe does seriously need to fix PDF generation from FrameMaker, IMHO.

Dov wrote:
> FrameMaker (exceptionally unfortunately) unlike InDesign, Illustrator,
and Photoshop does NOT have the ability to directly export PDF using the

[rant]

"oops, forgot to set the property" moments!
[/rant]

So ... the real QUESTION: when do you/Adobe expect the Adobe FrameMaker
software developers to learn how to use the Acrobat SDK, libraries,
etc., and "do it right"? Please feel free to pass the question on to
whoever is in charge of FrameMaker development!

Always a slow process, but as a member of the last 2 beta teams, and
familiar with the engineers, I know that form submission is one of the
easiest ways to make sure an issue is considered.

searching for a section symbol

2009-03-04 Thread Carol J. Elkins
In a table cell with View->Text Symbols turned on, how do I search
for a blank space following the last alpha-numeric character and
preceding the section symbol? I know the keyboard strokes to search
for the tab symbol, forced return symbol, end-of-paragraph symbol,
etc., but none of my quick-reference guides define the section symbol. Thanks!

searching for a section symbol

2009-03-04 Thread David Spreadbury
Carol,
In the Find\Change dialog, enter ' \p', without the single quotes. That is
'space backslash lowercase p'. This will find all occurrences of a space
preceding an end of paragraph.

In the Find/Change dialog, enter ' \r', without the single quotes. That is
'space backslash lowercase r'. This will find all occurrences of a space
preceding a forced (Shift+Enter) forced return.

FrameMaker to CHM

2009-03-04 Thread Jennifer Randel
Hi all,
I've just been assigned the task of creating CHM files, which I've never done.
I'm currently working in FM 7.2 on a WinXP box.

Is there an application that I can plug into Frame to generate CHM files or
will I have to recreate my docs in another application to produce CHM's?

Thanks in advance,
