You can also propogate OLE links unwitingly by copying and pasting from, say, a
Word document.  I've discovered some of these in my legacy docs.

But it's usually pretty obvious when this occurs, because the whole block can

Visually Identifying Marker Tags

Subject: Visually Identifying Marker Tags
Hi Framers,

I've just been searching the Adobe FM forums and haven't had much luck
finding out if there's any way for FM to better identify marker tags of
varying types (like index, cross-reference, and custom Context Sensitive
Help ones) with a Character format that makes them stand out for easier
identification.

I'm starting from the premise that you've got the View Text Symbols
turned on already. But, they just show you the marker T's in the same
font and colour as your content text. They also tend to run into
punctuation and paragraph marks, which obscure the marker tag.

I've only run across one method for making these markers pop out
visually: create custom Character formats and then manually apply them
to the marker types you desire using either a Find/Replace or after the
marker has been inserted.

I'm using FM9 p196 with the new TCS 2 and what I'd like to find out is
if anyone has discovered a better way to accomplish this or if Adobe has
somehow built this into the new version 9 of FM (and I just haven't
found out how to do it).

Thanks for any assistance,

If the goal is to simply edit marker content, easily and all at once,

List of Effective Sections

2009-03-09 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, all!

I just know there has to be a way to do this, but am hitting a wall in
my thinking. We are working on an inherited manual that currently has an
LEP, which I think I understand how it is put together. However, most
pages have multiple sections on them. For example, on page 1, there are
sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4, each with its own title and revision
date.

The question is how do I transform this LEP into an LES (list of
effective sections)? I'd like it to look similar to an LEP, but am
having trouble getting it to pull the revision date. Meaning, each entry
would be something like 1.1 Purpose .. 03/09/09

The section titles are currently autonumbered, the revision date is
hard-coded (because it changes by section not file). I am guessing I
need a custom marker, but beyond creating the marker, I do not know how
to work with them. I am on Frame 8, but most of my group is on 7.x.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

RE: List of Effective Sections

2009-03-09 Thread Owen, Clint
Kristy,

You can do it easily if the date is identified by a unique paragraph tag
that appears once for each occurrence of the section title (call it
Section Date). Then you set up a List of Paragraph and pull in all of
the Section Title and Section Date paragraphs as its content. The rest
is just formatting.

I don't know how you Titles and Dates appear on the page, but you can
use negative line spacing and left and right tabs to put two different
paragraphs together so they are part of the same line of text.

Just to spell it out for those who don't know: When Art refers to OLE,

Michelle/Terie mentioned Visio and Canvas. I have no experience with the
latter, but I use a fair number of Visio graphics. I strongly recommend
making PDFs of them and importing those by reference (with File > Import

Subject: List of Effective Sections

Hi, all!

I just know there has to be a way to do this, but am hitting a wall in
my thinking. We are working on an inherited manual that currently has an
LEP, which I think I understand how it is put together. However, most
pages have multiple sections on them. For example, on page 1, there are
sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4, each with its own title and revision
date.

The question is how do I "transform" this LEP into an LES (list of
effective sections)? I'd like it to look similar to an LEP, but am
having trouble getting it to pull the revision date. Meaning, each entry
would be something like "1.1 Purpose .. 03/09/09"

Thanks!

Kristy

Ack! No, no -- there's a much better way to put two pgfs on one line:
Define the first pgf format as a Run-In Head (on Pagination tab of
Paragraph Designer) and set the its Default Punctuation appropriately
(probably just a space). The following pgf will be on the same line,
separated from the first by the Default Punctuation.

List of Effective Sections

2009-03-09 Thread Owen, Clint
I have to confess that I've never used Run-In Heads, so that method
didn't occur to me. Thanks for the tip.

Exporting to TypePad

2009-03-09 Thread Ted Steinberg
1st. I would like to export unstructured Frame 7.1 paragraphs directly
into whatever TypePad uses for creating blog posts; paste in is OK.
TypePad's support FAQ'a contain nothing on Framemaker. I have about
4500 journal entries (paragraphs) into a 1,400 page Frame Book w/an
APL, TOC, and 50 chapters, of marketing concept notes taken over 20+
years; a few of my previous clients have asked me to put the best ones
into one or more blogs - for their sales & marketing staffs. The idea
of having to retype them and redo them is a bit much; I even called
Methuselah, he's older than I, but not by much, but he was too busy
with his own memoirs, given all those wives, to offer any advice other
than to not take steroids or Viagra or any performance enhancing
substances; but he did recommend that any advice from a Framer, though
addictive, was OK. So if anyone has some advise on how to do get from
Frame to a TypePad Blog with a minimum of pain I would be most
welcome.

2nd. I lost the WebWorks program that came with Frame, and it is not
installed. I mention this because, the thought is gnawing at my
clouded brain, that maybe it was good for something like this. If it
would be handy to have, any idea how I can get the program for the
price of a thank you? Like shipping it in a returning Banana Boat?

Regards from a retired Californian living in Costa Rica, having
improved the IQ's of both areas, although my Costa Rican relatives may
take exception to this remark.
