Disappearing commenting function
Although this problem is not on the FrameMaker side of things, I'm sure it is common for Frame users to send out docs as PDFs for review. A major problem with the Commenting function has appeared in Adobe Reader. It seems like it MIGHT be related to some Adobe updates that were just pushed through by our company. I enabled a PDF for commenting and sent it out for email review. The receivers see in the document properties that it is enabled for commenting, but they cannot access the commenting toolbar. This happened both with Reader 8 and 9. I could not find the toolbar either. There was nothing under the View Toolbars menu or the Tools menu that would activate it. We have been using this function for a long time and depend on it, but it has suddenly disappeared. A strange fact is that when one user upgraded from Reader 8 to 9, it solved the problem for them, even though someone else with Reader 9 still had the problem. Help! RE: Run-in head and All Properties option
-Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of suhas.mur...@tcs.com Sent: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 7:42 AM To: Combs, Richard Cc: Alison Craig; framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Run-in head and All Properties option Hi, Can anyone help me out with the following: - 1) What is the use of the All Properties option in Global Update options? Manage paragraph and character formats Update formats You can change format properties and then use them to redefine, or update, the stored formats and all the text in the document tagged with them. When you update a format, you can update all properties or just one group of properties. For example, you can change the default font family for all formats in a document without changing any other properties. 2) What are Run-in Heads and How to use the Run--in Head punctuation option in the paragraph designer? Create run-in heads Run-in heads are separate paragraphs on the same line as normal body text. They have the same margins as normal body text, and typically have a different font or weight for contrast. You can use a punctuation mark to set them off from the text that follows. The space between the run-in head and the preceding paragraph is determined by the Space Below setting of the previous paragraph or the Space Above setting of the run-in head, whichever is greater. 1 Click in the paragraph to change. If the paragraph is already a run-in head, it is on the same line as the paragraph following it. 2 Select Format Paragraphs Designer and click the Pagination tab. 3 Select Run-In Head -- Default Punctuation. If necessary, enter the punctuation, space, or combination of the two that you want to use. Note: To override punctuation later, type the new punctuation in the run-in head. FrameMaker ignores the punctuation specified in the Default Punctuation box but retains any special characters that are part of the default, including em and en spaces. 4 Click Apply To Selection. 5 Display the Default Font properties and change the run-in head's font so that it stands out from the surrounding text, if you want. 6 Click Apply To Selection. Re: FM9 - Table Placement
I've also had problems like you mention which I have discovered were the result of the paratag the table was attached to, and whether it was run in or under. gb On Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 1:44 PM, Stuart Rogers srog...@phoenix-geophysics.com wrote: Alison Craig wrote: Version: FM9 OS: XP Pro with SP3 I am having difficulty with Table Placement. Sometimes the tables cooperate nicely and break between rows across a page in the manner I expect. Other times, they insist on starting on a new page regardless of the fact that there is plenty of room for some/most of the table on the previous page. In this latter case, I even have examples where they fill the page they begin on then continue to the next page for the final one or two rows. The tables are all set up as follows: Align = Left Start = Anywhere Title = No Title This last is slightly inaccurate as I do give all tables a Title through a Paragraph Style with an Autonumber Format. This is placed before the table and is assigned to: Start = Anywhere Keep With = Next Pgf I'm sure - or at least I'm hoping - there is some simple setting somewhere that will allow me to have the table break between rows as space allows (I'd prefer not to have it break across rows unless I choose to use that option as an exception). RE: Using Subversion with Frame Files
Our software development department currently uses Subversion, and I create documentation using Frame. To me, Subversion is a version control system, and it ignores file types. So it's irrelevant if I'm saving .book or .fm files to a folder or directory in Subversion. I do maintain a separate documentation directory for files associated with each document, except for files that need to stay with the developers' files. Subversion was a bit of a bear to learn -- it has some weird idiosyncrasies that I haven't seen in other versioning systems, but I also have a lot more control of creating directories and folder structures. Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Hi, everyone. My List of Figures includes a caption that is very long. (Engineers feel a need to write an entire encyclopedia entry in each caption, and I haven't been able to dissuade them.) I put soft returns in the actual caption in the text, so that is broken like this: Simplified Equivalent Circuits of a Dielectric, Showing the Various Parameters of Current as a Function of Test Voltage (Parallel R/C Network) It shows up in the List of Figures like this (should align correctly if your email is set to Plain Text): Figure 1.6 Blah blah blah . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1-8 Figure 1.7 Simplified Equivalent Circuits of a Dielectric, Showing the Various Parameters of Current as a Function of Test Voltage (Parallel R/C Network)1-9 I've checked on the Reference page. Both figure 1.6 and 1.7 above use the same reference page entry. No other tab interferes with the proper placement of the page number. So why doesn't 1-9 appear under 1-8? Is this such an old problem that I've forgotten the solution? I know I've encountered it before -- but I also know that other figure titles with soft returns in them have worked just fine. Re: Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Add a few (three if it's always three lines) tab stops on the TOC Reference Page between paratext and pagenum. Or if it's just that one caption, you can probably add a tab stop at the end of the caption; that may be picked up and solve it too. Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ... In the ref page entry, put multiple tab characters between $paratext and $chapnum -- at least one for each line in your longest caption. Each time a line of text in the pgf moves past that tab position, it burns one of the tab characters. So you've run out, as it were. :-) HTH! Richard Richard G. RE: Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Hi Nancy, Yes. As others already said, add more tabs between $paratext and $chapnum. However, you do not need 1 per line. You have to add as many tabs so that there will be at least the same number of tabs in the last line as in regular first lines. Examples: Figure 1.6:xtab1-8 Here you have a single tab. When you add a soft return you still have your single tab before the page number. You do not need additional tabs: Figure 1.6: xxxtab1-8 Figure 1.6:tabxtab1-8 Here you have two tabs. When you add a soft return you have only a single tab before the page number in the second line. The first one between the figure number and the figure title is missing: Figure 1.6:tab xxxtab1-8 With an additional tab it works: Figure 1.6:tab xxxtabtab1-8 This is the same if you would have 3 lines. Still you need only 2 tabs in the last line: Figure 1.6:tab xx xxxtabtab1-8 I guess you can calculate how many tabs you need, if you would have an additional tab between Figure and the figure number. Therefore you have to do this: o Make sure that the indentation of the second line matches the first tab. o Add a single tab between $paratext and $chapnum. But more do not harm. 9.0.2 Upgrade problem
Win XP on a Dell workstation. FM9 (TCS2, actually). Since my FM9 Updater does not work, I'm trying to download the patches from Adobe.com. I've been trying off/on for the past few days. 9.0.1 downloaded and installed fine (9.0p230). 9.0.2 downloaded a corrupt 10.8 MB (should be 21.6 MB) file. It does nothing when I click on it. 9.0.3 downloaded fine, but won't install because my version of FM is incorrect (I'm assuming because 9.0.2 is not installed). Has anyone else had a problem downloading the FM 9.0.2 patch from Adobe.com? ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: [framescript-users] OT: Backup software
I have used Drivesnapshot (http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm) without a hitch for three years on XP and Vista. Very lean; if preferred, no installation is required, it'll just run off the command line. And it runs a complete verify on the backup, unlike most other programs. On any version of Windows (at least 2K to Vista), you can bind it into Bart PE, then you restore by booting of your Bart PE CD. Cheers, Mike Having just survived a hard drive meltdown, with the loss of some data, I am looking for recommendations for backup software. PDF Creator Issues with Frame9
Since I have upgraded our MACs running parallels from Frame 7.2 to 9.0 we have been encountering some issues in relation to colors and PDF creation. When I use the save as pdf option with a file that is using a color in the table column info, a square box appears around that particular column heading. When I print to postscript and open the file in distiller 6.0 there are no problems everything looks as it should. I can't get Distiller 9.0 to open itself on the machine, so I'm taking the postscript file to an older pc I have and distilling it. Anyone else run into this? I have other customers experiencing this same behavior and other color issues. Windows XP Pro and Vista via Parallels/Frame 9.0/All updates installed. Alan Litchfield wrote: < Because almost everyone *does not* have broadband internet connection. You are right, of course: everyone in this world *does not* have broadband internet connections! Anyway, for those of us who actually HAVE fast connections -- a group I believe is considerably larger than you estimate and to my experience include the vast majority of Framemaker users, incl. users in the major cities in the DBCS world far east -- I find it highly relevant to have cumulative updates handy. Small-file-size "patchers" that alter only the "current" installation are still relevant, of course. But why shouldn't they be cumulative in proportion to the base version? Why do they require specific sub-versions? Because the software used to generate such patcher-beasts require so, hence understandable to some degree. But that's not an argument at all. If you want to make life easy for the Framemaker users, "full" install packages should be made available for each revision-release. End of story! Anything else is bad service and delegates a completely unnecessary install-burden to users that lives happily with older Framemaker versions, which often have been patched 3-5 times though their official and supported life-cycle. Why doesn't Adobe offer cumulative packages at all for Framemaker, or at least cumulative Service Packs, so those of us (not me, but you outside Northern Europe and North America) that actually still use narrow internet connections have a chance to get off lightly though a re-install process WITHOUT downloading each patch separately? Disappearing commenting function
Although this problem is not on the FrameMaker side of things, I'm sure it is common for Frame users to send out docs as PDFs for review. A major problem with the Commenting function has appeared in Adobe Reader. It seems like it MIGHT be related to some Adobe updates that were just pushed through by our company. I enabled a PDF for commenting and sent it out for email review. The receivers see in the document properties that it is enabled for commenting, but they cannot access the commenting toolbar. This happened both with Reader 8 and 9. I could not find the toolbar either. There was nothing under the View > Toolbars menu or the Tools menu that would activate it. We have been using this function for a long time and depend on it, but it has suddenly disappeared. A strange fact is that when one user upgraded from Reader 8 to 9, it solved the problem for them, even though someone else with Reader 9 still had the problem. Help! Using Distiller 9 with Frame 9.0
Just to clarify here, you're talking about the limited Distiller instance that's coat-tailed on to the Frame install, correct? Not the Distiller that's part of the full Acrobat install. Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Add a few (three if it's always three lines) tab stops on the TOC Reference Page between and . Or if it's just that one caption, you can probably add a tab stop at the end of the caption; that may be picked up and solve it too. Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... In the ref page entry, put multiple tab characters between <$paratext> and <$chapnum> -- at least one for each line in your longest caption. Each time a line of text in the pgf moves past that tab position, it "burns" one of the tab characters. So you've "run out," as it were. :-) HTH! Richard Richard G. Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Beayootiful! (Adding the tabs back into the reference page worked. Adding them to the end of the captions did not.) You are my heroes! Thanks!
Tab in multi-line TOC entry does not work
Hi Nancy, Yes. As others already said, add more tabs between <$paratext> and <$chapnum>. Still you need only 2 tabs in the last line: Figure 1.6:tab xx xxxtabtab1-8 I guess you can calculate how many tabs you need, if you would have an additional tab between "Figure" and the figure number. Therefore you have to do this: o Make sure that the indentation of the second line matches the first tab. o Add a single tab between <$paratext> and <$chapnum>.
[framescript-users] OT: Backup software
I have used Drivesnapshot (http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm) without a hitch for three years on XP and Vista. Very lean; if preferred, no installation is required, it'll just run off the command line. And it runs a complete verify on the backup, unlike most other programs. On any version of Windows (at least 2K to Vista), you can bind it into Bart PE, then you restore by booting of your Bart PE CD. Cheers, Mike >> Having just survived a hard drive meltdown, with the loss of some data, I am looking for recommendations for backup software. I normally back up my data, but it is still a pain to reinstall all of my programs and set things up after a disaster. Is there a way to make a disk image that can be used so that the OS, applications, etc. can be restored? ... << Michael Heine London, Ontario Canada
PDF Creator Issues with Frame9
Scott, if you do a bit of Googling and/or check out old messages on the Adobe FM forum, you'll note that there have been issues with 9's SaveAsPDF option for some time, and for many people the problems have existed in earlier revs. The current advice of most people is not to use the SaveAsPDF option because it's buggy. What happens when you print directly to the Acobe PDF printer instance? Save behavior or something different? And have you tried to create a PDF on a straight Windows platform so you can rule out Parallels as part of the problem? Art Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... Any advantage to upgrade-FM7.2 to FM9?
Is there any advantage to upgrade from FM 7.2 to FM 9? I am using FM9 trial now and not finding enough improvement in features to justify the c0st to my management. Another way to ask the question is, does anyone have any experience with FM 7.2 and compatibility with computer system utilities as time goes by? Thanks! Jim Duszynski
