One problem in copying and pasting from Windows' Character Map is that
it sometimes shows characters that are not actually available. I have
found this site enormously helpful when dealing with special
characters:

I didn't use any benchmarking method, just worked all day with Windows
7 32-bit or 64-bit depending on whether I was in the office or at
home. 32-bit was better at running some old software, 64-bit could not
run some old apps at all (even in XP mode), otherwise there was no
practical difference. I
I teach my students to make a shortcut to the Windows character map for
convenience. The FrameMaker character map is awful. I point it out to my
students, we have a good laugh and then forget it.
Copy/Paste from the Windows map works well for us.
I had no trouble with the infinity symbol wit
Does anyone know what the upgrade pricing cutoff date is?
Thanks!

YMMV, of course.
I also edit videos on my system. These are in HD format and are my training

video recorder starts out as 2GB in size.
So, more than 4GB and a 64-bit video editing package is essential ... not just

Re. the infinity symbol, this is what I have tried:
1. When I copy the infinity symbol from the Character Map and paste it
directly into a new portrait FM document (unstructured) - paragraph set to
use Arial Unicode MS - the result is a question mark.
I also use an FM10 DITA application to creat
Robert,
You don't say what benchmarking method you used to compare 64 bit and 32 bit
Windows -
Generally, it will only manifest itself where one program (or a combination of
programs) want to access more than 2GB of RAM in one go -
it's always going to be faster to talk to RAM than to page thi
Framemaker does not appear to handle hexadecimal values using the ALT +
numeric keypad values. It does handle decimal values but I can't determine
what the different code points (character values) are mapped to. ALT+8734
results in a solid triangle for me.
You can select File > Utilities >Charact
Hi Fei Min,
you can not produce a character above 255 (decimal) = 00FF (hexadec.)
without "modding" your Windows.
If you absolutely want to use the "alt + ..." for Unicode characters,
you have to set the key value of "HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelInput

DITA experts,
In your own personal experience, what do you think is the best CMS to use with
DITA, specifically, the Oxygen authoring tool? We could do either self-hosting,
or a SAAS model.
I've used Subversion and EasyDita. I don't consider Subversion to be a real
document CMS, and EasyDita
I think buying more than 4GB of RAM would be a waste of money for most
tech writers.
The only thing I've done in my work where I've needed more than 4GB is
testing server applications with large memory footprints. The rest of
the time I'm not using even half my 4GB.
Outside of work I run music so
Hi,
Just for your information: The Windows Character Map tool
may show characters, even if they are not part of the font!
Therefore it could always happen that you try to copy and paste
a certain character although it is not part of your font!
Alternatives are.
