Re: Structured Framemaker

2014-07-15 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Rebecca,

you have to tell FrameMaker to work with a "structapps.fm" in a location
different than the program folder.
The necessary command is in the "maker.ini" -- which itself is also in
the FM folder, unfortunately.

But you can overwrite this general "maker.ini" with commands in your own
"maker.ini"-file. FrameMaker uses a second file with your personal
settings which is placed here:

C:Users*Your User-Name*AppDataRoamingAdobeFrameMaker11

Put in your user name (or login name) and find the folder on your
harddrive. Probably the user section is on drive c: (it could be on any
other accessible drive).

Now, in this maker.ini there should already be a section [Directories].
If not, copy this section header with the square brackets into the file,
just before another section starts.

Add the following command:
StructureDir=*Your Directory*

*Your Directory* can be anywhere on your harddrive where you have the
right to change files.

First, you also have to put a copy of a "structapps.fm" file into this
directory, otherwise FM still refers to the default path.

Hi Rebecca

You could save the edited structapps.fm file in a temporary folder, for
example C:\temp or on your desktop. Then, you can copy that file to the
FrameMaker installation folder, for example:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure

Cheers

Hi Pankaj,

I un-installed and re-installed .NET Framework, and now FrameMaker 11
and 12 start successfully in structured mode. Thank you for correctly
diagnosing the problem!

I had not made any (known) changes to my system before the failure. I
suspect a Microsoft auto-update corrupted my .NET Framework.

Thanks again!

Hi All,

Windows 7 running on MacOS/Parallels; FM 11 and 12 fully patched.

I'm getting immediate failure of structured Framemaker 11 and 12 on
startup. ("Internal Error ... FrameMaker has detected a serious
problem and must quit").

The apps start fine in unstructured mode.

I've tried:
- Removing the user-specific ini files
($HOME/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/FrameMaker)

- Disable all third-party plugins
- Disable "LoadStartupScripts" setting in maker.ini

This happened suddenly; I don't know what might have triggered it.

Any ideas?

Wow .. Alan .. that's a good one. If this was April 1, I'd think you
were joking.

I can't imagine what would affect both FM11 and FM12 simultaneously.
FM10 is OK? Are these part of a Tech Com Suite or standalone programs?
To me that indicates that the problem lies in some shared resource of
some kind. I know there is some sharing of resources .. but have no idea
what they are. I assume you've rebooted the VM?

Maybe Creative Cloud has gone haywire (naw), and attacked some FM resources?

I have a feeling that you'll need to push this to Adobe .. someone on
the FM dev team might have some ideas.

I hate to say it but you may need to reinstall.

scattered in various places, but there are also gaping holes.

The FM11 help says "see the online manual, Developing Structured

RE: Structured FrameMaker 11 Error Console

2013-10-14 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I have attached a screen capture of the top one of the XML files that I import.
When you mention the content model specified at the top of the file are you
referring to the DocType? There is a large set of Doctypes that I need to add
to the FrameMaker 11 structured applications file. I tried adding one of these
and then importing the xml file that corresponds to it. I am still getting the
error messages in the console and if I format, save, and then reopen the
FrameMaker 11 file that I imported, I am losing the formatting, so the problem
still exists.

If you open the XML file in a text editor, what's the content model specified
at the top of the XML file? Alternately, you can open the XML in Fm8 and use
the Set Structured Application File command to see what structapp needs to be
added to the Fm11 structapps file.

That application needs to be set up in Fm11, and you need to ensure that it is
valid. There may be minor tweaks to the structapp needed for use in Fm11.

As Rick said, the line numbers referring to the XML file will give an

Re: Structured FrameMaker 11 Error Console

2013-10-11 Thread Matt Sullivan
If you open the XML file in a text editor, what's the content model specified at the top of the XML file? Alternately, you can open the XML in Fm8 and use the Set Structured Application File command to see what structapp needs to be added to the Fm11 structapps file. That application needs to be set up in Fm11, and you need to ensure that it is valid. There may be minor tweaks to the structapp needed for use in Fm11.

That's asking for trouble. Word is simply incapable of handling
complex 1200-page documents, or even simple 1000-page documents.
It's in enough trouble with simple 300-page documents... ;-)

Consider turning the problem around. Get the original material
into FrameMaker, preferably as a book consisting of perhaps eight
chapter files, whatever fits the doc structure. Then you can
readily generate a single PDF. When you need to furnish it to
the engineers in Word, use Mif2Go to produce the Word doc; many
members of this list do that, and we don't know of a better way
(truly, even if it is our product ;-). You will get a set of
Word docs, not just one (one per chapter file), but that's what
you need if anyone wants to edit it in Word. And you can force
Track Changes on, so you can easily see what was altered and
copy/paste it (as PLAIN TEXT) back into the FrameMaker doc.
That way, your writer maintains control of doc integrity, which
we consider very important. You don't want any old tweak made
by a reviewer to go into the master FrameMaker doc without any
authorial review, now do you?

HTH!

RE: Structured FrameMaker competency questions

2006-02-22 Thread Anderson, Eileen
Since the questions must have clearly correct answers, I'd probably opt
to show the candidate a (printed or onscreen) snippet of an actual
structured FrameMaker document (including the structure view) and ask
him or her closed-ended questions about it, such as "In this section of
the document, which elements are siblings of this element [pointing to
it]? Does it have any children? What are its ancestors? What are the
attributes of this element?" You could show the candidate a few pages of
an EDD, plus some invalid structure in a document, and ask the candidate
to point out the part of the EDD that explains why that particular bit
of the document is invalid; make this even easier for your non-technical
panel by highlighting/numbering several portions of the EDD to make this
a multiple-choice question. You could also ask the candidate basic
questions that are less performance-related, but show familiarity with
Structured Frame, such as "What does 'EDD' stand for?"

Hi all,

I know that what I'm about to ask is less than ideal on so many levels,
but please don't offer me a lecture as I have no control over the
circumstances.

A past client has been asked to put together of list of questions that a
non-technical panel could use to evaluate applicants for a position that
involves the creation and maintenance of structured FrameMaker
documents.
Obviously, they have to have a reasonably quantifiably correct answer
for a non-technical panel be have any hope of making an assessment, so
does anyone have any suggestions for questions? I'd happily repost what
I send him if anything comes of it.

This is the approach that they will take, so there's no point in telling
me that the panel's not fit to make the decision - I know that already.
All I'm trying to do is to make sure that they don't get suckered by
someone who's going to try to learn on the job. Any suggestions for
questions are welcome.

Please mail me directly as well as the list, as I'm on the digest and
the answers were really needed yesterday, of course... ;-) Thanks for
any assistance,

Re: Structured FrameMaker competency questions

2006-02-22 Thread Marcus Carr

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for your excellent suggestions for questions. Some of
them weren't appropriate due to the nature of the documents (it's
Defence data and they already have DTDs), and some are more general
SGML/XML just to keep them on their toes. Overall though, I think it
will give them a great running start. Thanks very much for your help.

1Q. "Can you explain the difference between standard FrameMaker and
Structured FrameMaker?"

1A. An experienced user should be able to explain the differences, even
though the difference is just a configuration setting in the same
application. Standard FrameMaker is a word processor like Microsoft
Word, whereas Structured FrameMaker is all that as well as being a
platform to author and edit structured SGML and XML documents, requiring
components that control what you can and can't do while creating a document.

2Q. What are some of the difficulties that you've encountered while
creating structured applications?

2A. Things like defining the structural requirements (the DTD), creating
the rest of the application, finding a need to change the structure,
then having to catch up with the application. Another difficulty would
be imposing a standardised structure on authors or contributors working
in Word and not understanding why their data gets changed. Also, setting
up for things like images, tables, or landscape pages.

3Q. Have them explain their experience in learning FrameMaker - did they
do a course, learn it themselves, combination of both? Have they used
other structured editing applications

3A. If they did a course, ask them what company provided the training -
here in Australia, it could only be one of a handful. For other
structured editors, they might claim ArborText, Interleaf or XMetal -
experience with any of these would stand them in pretty good stead.

4Q. Where would they turn if they found themselves with a problem that
they couldn't solve themselves with FrameMaker? Do they have a
relationship with any companies that might provide them with support or
other contacts? Do they read any of the FrameMaker user groups? If so,
which ones?

4A. They'd be pretty brave to try to bluff this one. (There are only a
handful of companies training and supporting in Australia.)

5Q. Are they willing to demonstrate their proficiency on a simple test
document during the interview?

5A. Given a simple document, can they:
- Add an element in a place not allowed?
- Add an element in a legal place?
- Change an attribute value?
- Enter text
- Validate the document?
- Fix the error introduced in the first point and revalidate?

Ask them to explain as they go, so the non-technical panel has a better
idea what they're looking at for the next applicant.

6Q. Have you built structured FrameMaker applications in the past, or
just authored with them? If you've built them, roughly how many elements
did the DTD contain?

6A. If they claim to have built applications but don't know what a DTD
is, show them the door. If they don't know what an element is, show them
the window.

7Q. Can you explain what a book is in FrameMaker, how it differs to a
chapter and what general purpose it serves?

7A. A book is a container that manages multiple chapters, allowing
numbering of pages, headings, paragraphs, tables, figures and anything
else to be managed from a single point.

8Q. Can you explain the difference between SGML and XML?

8A. For a non-technical panel? Next to nothing, really. They use the
same pointy brackets. If they tell you that XML is a more portable
syntax by virtue of the fact that it's more self-contained, kiss them.
Then hire them.

9Q. What other XML standards/recommendations are you familiar with?

9A. XSLT, XSL-FO, XPath, XSD, Schematron, RelaxNG, XQuery all score points.

10Q. Which popular published structures have you worked with in the past?

10A. ATA, Airbus, 5629A, DocBook, DITA, etc.
