[Frameworks] This Saturday: Emily Eddy ++ The Nightingale Turns NINE!
Hey hi hello! This Saturday The Nightingale Cinema is celebrating its ninth (!!) birthday with a program of works by Co-Director Emily Eddy! Emily is a wonderful artist and programmer (perhaps Angelenos saw her program last week at Echo Park?) whose spirit, generosity, smarts and hard work help make the Nightingale such a vital space. We hope you'll join us for a program of Emily's work (along some special surprises) before cake and dancing and other carousing to celebrate another year of daring, visionary cinema, a strong community both in Chicago and across the globe, resistance, resilience and revelry. [Frameworks] Minneapolis TONIGHT
Filing between "better late than never" and "you get one extra day ever four years," I'm writing to tell the world (starting with you) that I'm presenting a screening of my work in Minneapolis tonight as part of the Cellular Cinema <https://www.facebook.com/events/1673403432932795/> series. If you are within 150 miles of either twin city and check your email with some regularity (or only every four years but n-n-now), it would be great to see you. Alternately, if you live near Madison or are within 150,000 miles of there, I'm doing a very similar show there on the 12th of March. [Frameworks] ACRE Residency (free application through Sunday)
Hi all, Just a note of encouragement to apply to my beloved ACRE Residency <http://www.acreresidency.org/application/> for the summer of 2016. ACRE’s residency this year will be its seventh, and already we've hosted over 450 artists at the idyllic ACRE property in rural southwestern Wisconsin. Having attended the residency myself—and now thickly amongst its all-volunteer staff—I would recommend it highly to emerging artists interested in expanding their practice and network of peers. Applications <http://www.acreresidency.org/application/> are due March 6th this year‚ but are free through Sunday, and I encourage all y'all to apply. Financial aid options including work-study positions and scholarships <http://www.acreresidency.org/application/scholarships-work-study/> are available. The residency is for artists of all stripes, but a number of moving image-oriented people have spent time there as visiting artists, residents and staff (last year's panoply included Deborah Stratman, Astria Suparak, Brett Kashmere, Alee Peoples, Mike Stoltz, Eric Fleischauer, Tony Balko, Jules Rosskam, Danielle Campbell, Jelly Marmalade and on and on). Applications <http://www.acreresidency.org/application/> and more information can be found at www.acreresidency.org Thanks! -- *// // // J E S S E M A L M E D * 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com // live to tape <http://livetotapefestival.tumblr.com/> jessemalmed.net <http://www.jessemalmed.net> // deep leap <http://www.deepleap.net> // nightingale <http://nightingalecinema.org/> // trunk show <http://trunk--show.com> // projective verse <http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/> // bad at sports <http://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/> // acre_tv <http://acretv.org/> // western pole <http://westernpole.tumblr.com> * <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804>Trunk Show in Newcity <http://art.newcity.com/2015/05/30/portrait-of-a-gallery-trunk-show/>** / **JM on WDCB <https://soundcloud.com/wdcbnews/the-arts-section-chicago-fest>** /** Live to Tape in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/05/14/live-to-tape-fest-is-like-if-weird-al-yankovics-uhf-were-a-gallery-installation> / **Trunk Show in the Chicago Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804> / JM in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/01/20/the-next-month-is-the-time-to-catch-the-thriving-local-experimental-video-art-scene> / Gapers Block <http://gapersblock.com/ac/2015/01/25/jesse-malmed-the-film-studies-center/> / South Side Weekly <http://southsideweekly.com/yes-to-humor-no-to-laughs/> / Chicago Tribune Best of 2015 <http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/ct-best-art-2015-ent-1213-20151209-story.html>* ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] Texts / Works Bridging Early Cinema, Early Video, Early ___
Hello, I'm looking for texts and works that draw connections (and erase them too, sure) between early cinema and the beginnings of video. And, for that matter, with other nascent technologies and their shared tendencies. Camera tricks, formal inventiveness, actualities, etc. Also, while I've got you — I was thinking about the (perhaps apocryphal, cunningly Gunningly so) stories of genuine fears about the Lumière train's first projection and the stories of the outraged audience at an early showing of L'Age D'Or throwing ink at the screen in protest. Ink on the screen is a pretty amazing gesture (it is about to not go without saying that I am obviously staunchly in the camp of artists over reactionary right-wingers) even/especially with its scale of potency to poetry. Are there other related stories you'd like to share? Torn down screens? Shadow puppets between the projector and the screen? Well-deployed spoilers? *JM* -- *// // // J E S S E M A L M E D * 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com // live to tape <http://livetotapefestival.tumblr.com/> jessemalmed.net <http://www.jessemalmed.net> // deep leap <http://www.deepleap.net> // nightingale <http://nightingalecinema.org/> // trunk show <http://trunk--show.com> // projective verse <http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/> // bad at sports <http://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/> // acre_tv <http://acretv.org/> // western pole <http://westernpole.tumblr.com> * <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804>Trunk Show in Newcity <http://art.newcity.com/2015/05/30/portrait-of-a-gallery-trunk-show/>** / **JM on WDCB <https://soundcloud.com/wdcbnews/the-arts-section-chicago-fest>** /** Live to Tape in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/05/14/live-to-tape-fest-is-like-if-weird-al-yankovics-uhf-were-a-gallery-installation> / **Trunk Show in the Chicago Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804> / JM in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/01/20/the-next-month-is-the-time-to-catch-the-thriving-local-experimental-video-art-scene> / Gapers Block <http://gapersblock.com/ac/2015/01/25/jesse-malmed-the-film-studies-center/> / South Side Weekly <http://southsideweekly.com/yes-to-humor-no-to-laughs/> / Chicago Tribune Best of 2015 <http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/ct-best-art-2015-ent-1213-20151209-story.html>* ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Shower scenes...
The scholars of 2020 can decide whether or not a radio piece is a movie, but a few months ago I made this hourlong collage of shower singing by a number of game friends, many of whom are artists and filmmakers. Plus, it was prompted by and made in conjunction with the excellent DINCA VISION QUEST moving image festival. I think it turned out nicely: http://jessemalmed.net/index.php/curatorial/shower-songs/ *(another of these slow-burns is on the back-burner if anyone receiving this sings in the shower and has even the slightest interest or the most rudimentary recorder [the thing you're reading this on is most likely enough])* On Mon, Jan 4, 2016 at 12:05 PM, wenhua shi <wenhua@gmail.com> wrote: > Shower (by Zhang Yang) > > On Sat, Jan 2, 2016 at 6:01 AM, graeme hogg <graemeh...@irational.org> > wrote: > >> >> >> >> Someone has mentioned Alcatraz but almost any prison film will have a >> shower scene as long as communal shower scenes are allowed. >> >> Scum 1977, A prophet 2009, etc >> >> >> >> ___ >> FrameWorks mailing list >> FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com >> https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks >> > > > ___ > FrameWorks mailing list > FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com > https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks > > -- *// // // J E S S E M A L M E D * 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com // live to tape <http://livetotapefestival.tumblr.com/> jessemalmed.net <http://www.jessemalmed.net> // deep leap <http://www.deepleap.net> // nightingale <http://nightingalecinema.org/> // trunk show <http://trunk--show.com> // projective verse <http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/> // bad at sports <http://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/> // acre_tv <http://acretv.org/> // western pole <http://westernpole.tumblr.com> * <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804>Trunk Show in Newcity <http://art.newcity.com/2015/05/30/portrait-of-a-gallery-trunk-show/>** / **JM on WDCB <https://soundcloud.com/wdcbnews/the-arts-section-chicago-fest>** /** Live to Tape in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/05/14/live-to-tape-fest-is-like-if-weird-al-yankovics-uhf-were-a-gallery-installation> / * *Trunk Show in the Chicago Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/trunk-show-jesse-malmed-raven-falquez-munsell-bumper-stickers-eric-fleischauer/Content?oid=15719804> / JM in the Reader <http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/01/20/the-next-month-is-the-time-to-catch-the-thriving-local-experimental-video-art-scene> / Gapers Block <http://gapersblock.com/ac/2015/01/25/jesse-malmed-the-film-studies-center/> / South Side Weekly <http://southsideweekly.com/yes-to-humor-no-to-laughs/> / Chicago Tribune Best of 2015 <http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/ct-best-art-2015-ent-1213-20151209-story.html>* *12/5-18 — Test Patterns at Flux Factory <https://www.facebook.com/events/1655327008075559/> (NYC)* *12/19 — Scott Wolniak for Trunk Show Closing <https://www.facebook.com/events/1197571340257646/>(CHI)12/19 — Alex Bradley Cohen for Trunk Show <https://www.facebook.com/events/1653123141593045/>(CHI)* ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Michael Smith — It Starts at Home Christine Lucy Latimer — Program Description George Kuchar — Hefner’s Heifers ESP TV in Chicago Talk Show — Mothergirl Sunday, May 24, 7 pm - SKETCH BOOK People love a big ending. Tonight we learn if Live to Tape existed in a snow globe or was just a dream or if everyone finds their ending. Tonight is almost an anagram for nothing, but it’ll be so much more. We’ve enlisted Lori Felker, she of Broken New, This Is My Show and It Doesn’t Matter artist television fame, to host her final talk show. It was a brief run, but as the clip reel attests, we laughed, we cried, we grew. Why, even tonight, we celebrated the television painter, the mark-makers hidden amidst the pixels and signals. Drawn like a mirror to itself, art is made between the scanlines. It’s all too much, this sweet sadness of parting. Or painting. John Kilduff tries to sell the Let’s Paint TV collection, while Guy Richards Smit, Danny Volk, Steve Wetzel and Kelly Lloyd try to figure out the notion of man artists on television. Jennifer Juniper Stratford paints with electrons while Wynne Greenwood and K8 Hardy, pregnant with information, report on bad paintings and the women in contemporary art. Jaime Davidovich offers a portrait of the best artist while Scott Wolniak and Derek Fansler bring a suitable puppet portrait of a buddy road movie. [Frameworks] Joe Gibbons Works at the Nightingale Tomorrow
If you're within 24 hours of Chicago, we hope you'll join us at the Nightingale Cinema tomorrow night to raise support, funds, glasses and awareness for Joe Gibbons. *Other Provocations* 2/25/2015, 7 pm, Nightingale Cinema, 1084 N. Milwaukee, Chicago Joe Gibbons, the brilliant, provocative artist, was arrested on New Year’s Eve for bank robbery. The New York Post—all salacious details, condescending scare quotes and scandalous urgency—breathlessly reported the story but left out some of the best parts. The Nightingale Cinema, in solidarity with other cinemas across the country, is doing its small part to raise (among other things) awareness of Gibbons‘ fascinating work and his present predicament. We’ll be screening a range of his works, made both collaboratively and on his own. A pioneer in experimental autobiography(?), Gibbons‘ work—which has shown in contexts like four Whitney Biennials, the Museum of Modern Art and the Rotterdam Film Festival—often centers on Joe—an anxious, if genius, misanthrope. The work is risky and smart, disarmingly funny and constantly bumping up against its own consideration of truth. [Frameworks] Call for Entries: LIVE TO TAPE | ARTIST TELEVISION FESTIVAL
Portapak Activists, Psychedelic Cartoonists, News Ranchos, Talk Showers, Couched Potatoes, Radical Freeqers, Bit Players, Monster Mulches, Broadcast Aways, Framed Workers— From May 18th-24th, Chicago's Links Hall is hosting LIVE TO TAPE, a seven day, eight program festival of artist television. We're looking for old works, new works and future works. Please submit *performance proposals* and *moving image works* (for free) HERE http://livetotapefestival.tumblr.com/tvsubmissions (through 1/15). Even if you don't have works of your own to submit, I'm ecstatic to receive favorite readings, essential materials, forgotten masterpieces, fresh insights and recommendations either to jesse.mal...@gmail.com or livetotapefesti...@gmail.com. The festival is considering works where television plays a material, formal, conceptual, platformist, antagonistic, inspirational (, etc.) role and certainly interested in those terms being considered expansively. Thank you! Jesse *LIVE TO TAPE — ARTIST TELEVISION FESTIVAL* *MAY 18-24, 2015, LINKS HALL, CHICAGO* Seven days of Prime Time (new works), Reruns (historical works), one of a kind Talk Shows, psychedelic cartoons, cable excess, and ecstatic static. Since television’s inception, artists have been using and misusing it as material, as form, as inspiration and as antagonist. Live to Tape asks artists—performers, writers, moving image makers—to produce, reproduce and explode television for a live studio audience. Watch as a new generation channels and resets notions of the surf, the stream and the idiot box. They catch phrases and dodge signals, radicalizing and re-envisioning the frequencies. [Frameworks] Chicago! Lorenzo Gattorna Close Company at the Nightingale Tonight!
Apologies abound, but mostly in the lol siento form. If you're most anywhere in the US, you're still within flying distance of this evening's excellent show at the Nightingale (1084 N Milwaukee). Works by Lorenzo Gattorna, Ryan Marino, Shambhavi Kaul, Marika Borgeson and Josh Weissbach. More below. Not So Static : Lorenzo Gattorna and Close Company Artist in attendance! World Premiere of Jones Falls! Saturday, September 27, 2014, 7 pm, $7-10 The Nightingale is pleased to bring Baltimore-based filmmaker and programmer Lorenzo Gattorna to screen his films and films of subsequent influence. The program alternates between Gattorna’s haunting documentaries and idiosyncratic works by Ryan Marino, Shambhavi Kaul, Marika Borgeson and Josh Weissbach. Somewhere between the optical and the ocular, the spectacular and the speculative, the sites in these films masquerade as themselves. The artists whose work Gattorna has chosen have chosen him—sharing a devotion to both estrangement and cognition, while serving to elucidate each other. This program renders a quiet recollection of the capacity of the moving image to transport an audience to another place and a place to an audience. Seeing is a kind of knowing, but one fraught with seductive half-truths, misdirective fantasies and the consciousness that often a closer look only reveals greater distance. Marshy Place Across, Lorenzo Gattorna, 2012, 16mm to digital, b/w color, sound, 4.5 min A Distant Horizon, Ryan Marino, 2012, 16mm, color, sound, 6.5 min The Enchanted Forest, Lorenzo Gattorna, 2011, 16mm to digital, color, sound, 6.5 min Mount Song, Shambhavi Kaul, 2013, digital, color, sound, 9 min Jones Falls, Lorenzo Gattorna, 2014, 16mm to digital, b/w, sound, 10 min Eleven Forty Seven, Marika Borgeson, 2013, digital, color, silent, 12 min At Rest, Lorenzo Gattorna, 2012, 16mm to digital, b/w color, silent, 5 min theoria, Josh Weissbach, 2014, 16mm, color, silent, 5.5 min Lorenzo Gattorna is a filmmaker and programmer originally from New York. And, while I'm here, Saturday (at Chicago Filmmakers) and next Wednesday (at Columbia), they're showing MARIANNA MILHORAT's gorgeous films (alongside some influences) as part of the same series. —Jesse -- // // // J E S S E M A L M E D 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com www.jessemalmed.net // www.deepleap.net projective verse http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/ // bad at sportshttp://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/ ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] Cinema Siblings
Frameworkers— While assembling a mental list I remembered that the internet is great at conjuring mentalists. For a screening or a class or just to have and know, who are some other sibling pairs (or more— - —) in the world of artist-made moving images? I have: George and Mike Kuchar, Jonas and Adolfas Mekas, James and John Whitney, Paul and Greg Sharits, All brothers. Surely there are sisters and other sibling formations. I'm interested in both those groupings that collaborate(d) and those that don't/haven't/didn't. [Frameworks] Tomorrow at ATA - UNTITLED (JUST KIDDING) - RECENT WORKS BY JESSE MALMED
My apologies for missing the normal mailing. For those looking to find themselves in the Bay Area tomorrow evening, I'll be screening works from the past year or so at ATA. It would be lovely to see friends new and old. There are some surprises (even for me) in the program. *---jm* Tomorrow, Tuesday August 13th, 2013 Artists' Television Access, San Francisco, 8 pm, $6 *UNTITLED (JUST KIDDING)* *Recent Works by Jesse Malmed* Chicago-based artist and curator Jesse Malmed brings an evening of recent moving image and performance works to his former hometown. The program scrambles somewhere in the intersects of conceptual comedy, dizzying illogics, the poetic plu-future and sustainable sourcing. The event is highly recommended for those with an interest in language, the histories of the avant-garde, genre fiction, pop music, the cover, the bootleg and the imaginative space between a source and a result. Among the works to be screened: WREADING (2012), an 18 minute romp through diffuse meaning-making and ideas of creative reading. Along for the ride are Walt Whitman, Jeopardy, Tuli Kupferberg, a beluga speaking human and a television that sings about being watched. THIMBLERIG (2012) performs heavy thinking and goofy slipping on and about body-swaps, tears in the multiverse and dream babies. SUPERNYM (2013) thinks about constituency and contingencies, formalisms and constellations of celebrity. In addition, Jesse brings new iterations of his Conversational Karaoke!!—everyone’s favorite performance game—back to ATA. A merch table stocked with bootlegs, newspapers and coasters comes along for the ride. == Jesse Malmed is an artist and curator working in moving images, performance, text and the overlaps and gaps thereof. He has screened and performed at venues like the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Portland Art Museum’s Northwest Film Center, Light Industry, the Shanghai Biennial and Chicago Underground Film Festival. Previously a collective member of Cinema Project in Portland, he serves as a programmer at the Nightingale Cinema and for the peripatetic Deep Leap Microcinema and writes about experimental moving images and their makers for Bad at Sports, CINE-FILE, YA5 and Incite Journal. He grew up in Santa Fe, earned a BA from Bard College and presently attends the MFA program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. www.jessemalmed.net -- // // // J E S S E M A L M E D 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com www.jessemalmed.net // www.deepleap.net projective verse http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/ // bad at sportshttp://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/ ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Hi Bruce, I know this piece is a little longer than you want it to be, but it uses clouds so much and in from such varied sources, I thought I'd at least share it with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8wfDEfW-v4 WREADING (2013) WREADING is reading as writing, a romp through meaning-making and diffuse divination. The clouds hold secrets. Tuli Kupferberg is not the beluga, but the beluga sings human. Charles Bernstein. The world is a word is a world. Cloud covers. It's shown around a bit: Chicago Underground Film Festival, Experimental Film Festival - Portland, Milwaukee Underground (where it received honorable mention) and at ATA next week. The clouds are from all over the west, from Bruces Conner and Bailie, from the Simpsons, from computers and on and on. The credits say so. [Frameworks] Submissions/Suggestions for New Programs
Hello Frameworkers, I'm working on a few new programs of experimental shorts and am hoping you might have some submissions/suggestions of work you've made or to which you've made a connection. *New Landscapes* — new looks at old landscapes, old looks at new landscapes, Peter Hutton gifs, super-8 computer worlds, what we might mean by virtual landscapes or space scapes in 20(0)13. This one is mostly finished, but until it is, I'm happy to see new things. *Skeuomorphs* (as yet untitled) — related to other curatorial endeavors, but with a particular interest in how skeuomorphism functions within a progressive/regressive, experimental moving image culture, thinking of iMovie scratched film look, the clicking of a cell phone's shutter, what's aesthetic about processes and how those forms help a transfer to other processes. The third, and now that they're all lined up there are obvious connections, shared interests and apprehensions, is the least fully formed. I'm working through something that has to do with *time (and space) travel*, with an emphasis on imaginative portals between different realms. That is to say, expansively: a telephone as a mode of instantaneous travel through space, a recording/photograph/letter as a mode of time travel back to the moment of its making, a time capsule as an optimistic grasp at the same. Thinking and rethinking of cinema in these terms makes sense here. *Accents, dialects, idioms* and a generalized feeling that the place from which people emerge informs who they are, who they'll become, how they'll speak. This is related more fully to my own work than the others, but will find its way into the world in a similar way. Impersonations, shibboleths, pidgins and glocalities welcome. Thank you, Jesse -- // // // J E S S E M A L M E D 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com www.jessemalmed.net // www.deepleap.net projective verse http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/ // bad at sportshttp://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/ ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Take the show home with you! jesse **Doors at 5pm, screening starts at 6pm** Video Playlist is a recurring series of one-night public video screenings guest curated in response to MoCP exhibitions. Jesse Malmed will present a program in conjunction with Peripheral Views that includes a live, participatory performance during the screening. Talk barely, talk breathily, talk American. The works in this screening address the complexity of language and the myriad ways it shapes our experience of reality. Any place as big as America, with as man y voices as America, has a multitude of expressions that exist at the periphery. This program brings the following to a center: a Sci-Fi CAPTCHA tale, what Microsoft Word found wrong with the Unabomber, how jargon becomes gibberish, a report from the out-of-bodied, a political speech about political speech, and finally, real talk from a pair of paper-mache dogs. Following the screening, Malmed will present selections from The Body Electronic, an ongoing and evolving series of participatory video-based performances. Malmed offers a visual, polyvocal, and interactive experience that engages audience members in dizzying, surprising, and humorous ways. The screening features the work of Joe Sandler, Peter Rose, Peggy Ahwesh, Doug Hall, Gabrielle de Vietri, Stephanie Barber, and Jesse Malmed. This event is free and open to the public. -- // // // J E S S E M A L M E D 505.690.7899 // jesse.mal...@gmail.com www.jessemalmed.net // www.deepleap.net projective verse http://urbanhonking.com/projectiveverse/ // bad at sportshttp://badatsports.com/tags/jesse-malmed/ ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
