Re: RE: XFree86 question
I had already tried this, that's how I got the config file that I had. I decided to try again. I was using the VESA driver because I had read that might help. This time I tried the s3 driver, which is supposed to be the driver that I really need and I get an error saying that the driver can't be found when I run startx. I tried XFree86 -configure as well and that core dumps and tells me... Symbol XAAPattern ROP_PM from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nsc_drv.0 is unresolved. Let me know if anybody has any other ideas. I'm really at my wits end... Thanks. -K From: Subhro [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2003/08/23 Sat AM 03:08:46 EDT To: 'Kelly Brown' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: XFree86 question Did you configure any screens? Try /stand/sysinstall. QT application compile error
Hi, I'm learning QT programming and following the tutorials at trolltech's web site. I'm just trying to see how qt programs compile using the qmake -project, qmake and make. But when I try to compile any program -- even helloworld, I get syntax errors as well as unterminated #ifndef errors. I'm using 5.1 with qt 3.1.2. Any ideas of how to properly compile qt programs? problem Raidtec and Qlogic 2312
Hello freebsd-questions, I have problem with SAN Raidtec and HBA Qlogic 2312 Appeared the problem with new Raidtec 2208. At copying of the files from Raidtec to local disk, as well as inwardly Raidtec, warning appear in log files both in FreeBSD 4.8. The speed herewith decreases in several times in contrast with copying from Raidtec to local disk. Was noticed that process of copying seasonly stops for several seconds and then lasts. However copying from local disk to Raidtec occurs always orderly and with good speed. I may have more than enough stuff and junk here that i could donate to you. The only problem is i wouldnt have any idea on how you would like me to send it. The price alone would cost me a Fortune. How do you suggest on handleing this? Otherwise the Equipment i have available im willing to Donate to FreeBSD. The thing is about me is that if its helping FreeBSD and any other OS that is out there, to get rid of Microsofts Crap they are putting on the shelfs. I would break a arm and a leg in the process to help. Although ive never been a FreeBSD user. Im looking into it at the moment and hopefully FreeBSD is the best step for me. If not well then life gos on. But i know your team can help me out by cleaning out my storage room with all my clutter. Also theres 4 warehouses in my area that i get equipment from home that have Sun Sparc Workstations and some Old Storage Racks for SUN also. Along with alot of HP products.plenty of Compaq pcs with Monitors and up to date Hardware that the local services in this town dispose of and the school districts and colleges trash there junk. But im not complaining though.I got 5 servers from them so im happy. Im sure they will make your day also. Ill be able to get a list of Hardware and parts of everything probbaly within the next two days. I will be able to forward the data to the handlers of donations and well we can work out a plan on this. M.Fay Xerosoft Security - Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! emergency: can't boot! please help
Hi, I've got a massive problem and I need urgent help, please. Trying to set up a dual boot, and I've rendered my primary master (which has windows xp) un-bootable. On this page: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/disks.html#NT-BOOTLOADER in section 9.10... it says: - If FreeBSD is installed on the same disk as the NT boot partition simply copy /boot/boot1 to C:\BOOTSECT.BSD However, if FreeBSD is installed on a different disk /boot/boot1 will not work, /boot/boot0 is needed. Warning: DO NOT SIMPLY COPY /boot/boot0 INSTEAD OF /boot/boot1, YOU WILL OVERWRITE YOUR PARTITION TABLE AND RENDER YOUR COMPUTER UN-BOOTABLE! /boot/boot0 needs to be installed using sysinstall by selecting the FreeBSD boot manager on the screen which asks if you wish to use a boot manager. This is because /boot/boot0 has the partition table area filled with NULL characters but sysinstall copies the partition table before copying /boot/boot0 to the MBR. When the FreeBSD boot manager runs it records the last OS booted by setting the active flag on the partition table entry for that OS and then writes the whole 512-bytes of itself back to the MBR so if you just copy /boot/boot0 to C:\BOOTSECT.BSD then it writes an empty partition table, with the active flag set on one entry, to the MBR. - Well, I read that to mean that if I installed /boot/boot0 with sysinstall, THEN i should copy /boot/boot0 to C:\bootsect.bsd. I did this by following instructions I found elsewhere. In FreeBSD, I tried this: dd if=/dev/ad1 of=c:\bootbaby.sec bs=512 count=1 (I figured that by calling it bootbaby.sec, I'd rename it later to bootsect.bsd, which is what the NT loader dual boot item was set at from a previous failed attempt.) I may also have copied /boot/boot0 to c:\bootsect.bsd from off the CD. I don't remember at this point -- I've been panicking for about 3 hours now. Anyway... the point is this: My NT loader got screwed up, and now I can't even get into that disk (Windows XP is on the Primary Master, ad0, and FreeBSD is on the Primary Slave, ad1). I've tried creating a boot disk: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595 and even added some options, as suggested here: http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/dual/rescuebootdisk.html (and I used his exact boot.ini -- don't know what the original boot.ini was, but his seems about right)... but nothing's working. The error I get from that one is: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. Now, this might not seem like a FreeBSD issue, since it's the Windows XP disk I can't get into, but it was the FreeBSD boot loader that got me into this mess. The FreeBSD warning was: Warning: DO NOT SIMPLY COPY /boot/boot0 INSTEAD OF /boot/boot1, YOU WILL OVERWRITE YOUR PARTITION TABLE AND RENDER YOUR COMPUTER UN-BOOTABLE! and although I was very careful about this and I was sure I WASN'T doing what they were warning me against... I think that's what has happened. How do I fix this? I've even tried attaching the drive to another computer (Win XP) as a Slave, to see if I could SEE the contents of the drive, but I can't. Please don't tell me this disk is gone. There's got to be a way to re-create the original partition table or re-write a new one that will see the disk's contents, etc.??? This has been a very bad day for me. PLEASE help, I'm begging. Thanks. OZ __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! If I can't tell the upstream router's administrator, is there other way to make all of client behind firewall to able to comminucate with other on internet. How big is your subnet, i.e., how many public IPs has your ISP provided you? If it's only one, you'll need to use NAT and a private address range for your client network. If you have been given many IPs, look again at the link I had previously posted. ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
FreeBSD 4.8 install issues
I downloaded the 4.8 iso images from freebsd.org and began an install on a box I recently built for this purpose. I could not find a description of the various CDs (CD1, CD2, CDmini), so I grabbed them all. I'm still not sure what the purpose of each is, but I started with CD1 (seemed logical). I had no trouble following the manual to get the installation going, however I have two problems: 1) There are only 6 network adapters listed in the kernel config screen, and the Realtec is not one of them. Realtec cards are supposedly supported according to the hardware compatibility list. 2) Towards the end of the installation, I get the following error: unable to get packages/INDEX I'm left with a bootable and what appears to be a fully functional system when sysinstall is complete, except of course, I have no network accessibility. Re: FreeBSD 4.8 install issues
The network adapters listed in the kernel config are ISA NICs that require configuration. If you have a PCI NIC that is supported, it will be auto-detected. 2) Towards the end of the installation, I get the following error: unable to get packages/INDEX I'm left with a bootable and what appears to be a fully functional system when sysinstall is complete, except of course, I have no network accessibility. Can anyone clarify these issues for me? When your system boots, all of the device probe information is saved and can be displayed by the dmesg program. Are there any lines in your dmesg output that say unknown device? It's possible that while you have a RealTek-based card, the FreeBSD driver doesn't recognize it as a compatible card. -- Matt Emmerton ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

vsftpd port not honoring /etc/shells
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I installed the vsftpd port on my RELENG_4_8 system as a replacement for the standard ftpd. However, it doesn't appear to be honoring /etc/shells - a user listed in the passwd file with a shell (/sbin/nologin) that does not appear in /etc/shells is still allowed to FTP into the system. I'm guessing this may be a problem with PAM, as I have check_shell=YES in /usr/local/etc/vsftpd.conf, and the manpage for vsftpd.conf says that this setting is only valid for non-PAM builds. But I'm stumped as to how to lock down users via /etc/shells in the default port build. Continuing 4.8 install problems
I discovered I had 1) A bad media burn to CD, and 2) An unsupported network card. I burned disk 1 of the ISO again and purchased a new network card from the hardware compatibility list (My realtek is version 82xx not 81xx). So after re-installing, the DLink I purchased was recognized as a RealTek 81xx as expected. I assigned an IP and did other network configuration, and then rebooted. Everything seemed fine, but when I shut the box down, moved it to my server room, and booted it back up, the network interface is now not discovered on boot, and does not exist. I've rebooted several times to no avail, the network interface may as well not exist. RE: FreeBSD 4.8 install issues
1) There are only 6 network adapters listed in the kernel config screen, and the Realtec is not one of them. Realtec cards are supposedly supported according to the hardware compatibility list. The network adapters listed in the kernel config are ISA NICs that require configuration. If you have a PCI NIC that is supported, it will be auto-detected. I have what might be some interesting input on this issue. I have a Linksys LNE100TX nic (PCI) in my FBSD system. I do an FTP install. When I get to the Kernel Config screen, I choose the last network adapter in the list, I think it's an SMC, and enter the proper I/O address (the default IRQ is correct). I can then configure the network and continue my FTP install without any problems. I've only been running FBSD for a few weeks (this time), and I run a custom report every day that does ifconfig, and I see no problems at all. I cvsup every day with no nic related errors, so I cannot see any problems with using the tx driver. I would be interested in knowing the proper procedure to change drivers after install completes. I assume I would have to recompile the kernel, disable the tx driver and enable the dc driver. From the Hardware Notes: Lite-On 82c168/82c169 PNIC Fast Ethernet NICs ( dc(4) driver) Kingston KNE110TX LinkSys EtherFast LNE100TX Matrox FastNIC 10/100 NetGear FA310-TX Rev. Mplayer plays from 1 sound card, but how do I select which card to use and also the sound is not so good (interrupts). Also in KDE in the settings dialog for Sound system, should I start aRts and set Use custom sound device to /dev/dsp0.1 (won't that be mono sound out of the 1st sound card)? Thank you for any advices, I'm a bit confused how to set it up. You should run a 'make clean' everywhere you left it. You can find it using sth. like 'find /usr/ports -name work'. This should solve your problems.
