Duplicating songs on a blank cd
Greetings! My name is Craig and I am having a problem with troubleshooting with duplicating songs on a blank cd. Firstly, I'd like to tell you that a friend of mine has made a cd of himself singing on the cd. He recorded himself singing and rapping on the cd. He has given me one copy of his cd, but I am trying to give it to another friend of mine whereas I would need to transfer the songs onto the cd my friend gave me onto a blank cd I am going to give to another friend. What I'm trying to do is have it so the person I will make the copy for will to it on a cd player or jukebox instead of on the conmputer. I have tried almost everything to solve this problem and I still have not gotten it to work. I have noticed that when I try to transfer the songs onto a blank cd by using Real Player, I've tried listening to it on a cd player but it wouldn't work. However, I inserted it into the computer and the songs appeared and started to play. How can I get it to be able to play on the cd player is my general question. I've also noticed these songs are ".cda" type of music file. If you could help me with this problem, I'd greatly appreciate your support. Thank you and have a blessed day! You can always use your installation CDROM as a boot floopy and/or resque disk for such 'problems'. Just boot from the CDROM and interrupt the boot process at the spinning '/' character stage by pressing SPACE. You should see a prompt like this: >> FreeBSD/i386 BOOT Default: 0:ad(0,a)/kernel boot: Instead of pressing RETURN to boot the default kernel, type this at the 'boot:' prompt: 1:ad(1,a)/boot/loader This should bring up your /boot/loader from the second ATA disk. The rest of the booting process is relatively easy, so I think you'll manage alright. If not, keep notes and mail us again :-) - Giorgos ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

today ran thru install using entire 2nd HD for bsd 5.0 by foolowing FREE BSD UNLEASHED 2nd ed. it seemed pretty straight forward. but after install did not boot into bsd. boot loader options were to come up after i initially said do nothing now when disk 2 was picked for install. but the later oppotunity never came up. xp is on disk 1 and bsd on 2nd. expected equivalent of lilo or grub to load on mbr of 1st disk but no such luck. what about a boot floppy option? this would be less nerve racking. no error messages came up only congatulations. i use dsl for internet connexn and not on any networks. just tying to learn. any ideas? thnx. a boot floppy would sure help so as not to damage winxp. thanx ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Installation on RAID 0 and uninstallation of Boot Mgr
Hi all! Having problem with installing 5.2.1 on a computer with 2 SATA 80G disk in RAID 0 (Striping) There is a WinXP installed already which has 4 primary partitions of 5, 10, 25 and 60G. My BSD installation went like usuall. I chose to create a Slice on ar0 in the unpartitioned 50G space. Then I chose to install Boot Manager. When commitin the changes a got error like "node for 'X' slices failed" ,"mount /dev unavailable". I will give you the exact error messages if you need them! Then I had to reboot my machine and I got very suprised that the boot manager was installed showing: F1 ??? F2 ??? F3 ??? F4 ??? Which probaly means my 4 NTFS partitions. XP boots if I choose F1. So my questions are: 1. How do I install BSD on my current RAID 0 system 2. How can I remove Bootmanager if I dont succeed with my BSD installation? According to the pkg-plist for both the perl5 and perl58 ports, DB_File is part of perl itself. I don't think a port would try and install something already on the system, and it shouldn't be using perl's install method if it did. dhclient and host resolution
Hello, I am having some trouble with my dhclient setup, but think I am almost there, just need a little prod for the last bit! To me it seems a pretty ambitious setup, but I think to a seasoned pro it should be pretty easy... I have a Apple PowerBook running Panther and have set it to share my modem internet connection over the Ethernet port. FreeBSD is connected to this and should get all config via DHCP. When dhclient runs, it successfully gets an IP Address from the Powerbook, and I can ping between machines... A quick look at the leases file also shows that it has the Powerbook as the Gateway and as the DNS server. However, I can only get to the Internet from the BSD box using IP addresses, trying a url such as www.google.com always fails as it cant resolve the host, plus the response is immediate as if it hasn't tried or waited for a response. It was quite an achievement for me just to get this far, as I can't get the ltmodem working (maybe that will be another mail) and have only used FreeBSD for like a week! However, it means I cannot use the ports or packages collection as all the fetch commands use the url and not the IP (anyone know where I can just download a full package to install XFCE manually?) I am not sure what further information to put here, except that I can boot into XP on the same computer and am able to resolve URL's without changing any settings on the PowerBook, and the status in XP shows the same settings as the leases file in FreeBSd, so I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the PowerBook... I will endeavour to supply whatever info necc, as there really is no point in having FreeBSD if it can't get on the internet, but I'm hoping its gonna be a pretty simple thing... please can you put full paths for any files I might need to change, as I am don't know the file systems of by heart yet. base system vs. isc-dhcp : dhclient conflicts?
Hello, I have isc-dhcp3 port installed on my 4.9-Stable PC. I need that as I want to configure this machine as both, a DHCP client and server. I notice, that I have two versions of dhclient related files (see below). Is this a problem and reason for possible conflicts? What can I do to avoid multiple versions of dhclient related files? Is there a make.conf option that will prevent the build of dhclient in the base system? I don't know which dhclient to use, the one in /sbin or the one in /usr/local/sbin. And which dhclient.conf file to modify. Thanks for help, Rob. -- /sbin/dhclient /usr/local/sbin/dhclient /sbin/dhclient-script /usr/local/sbin/dhclient-script /etc/dhclient.conf /usr/local/etc/dhclient.conf /usr/share/man/man5/dhclient.conf.5.gz /usr/local/man/man5/dhclient.conf.5.gz /usr/share/man/man5/dhclient.leases.5.gz /usr/local/man/man5/dhclient.leases.5.gz /usr/share/man/man8/dhclient-script.8.gz /usr/local/man/man8/dhclient-script.8.gz /usr/share/man/man8/dhclient.8.gz /usr/local/man/man8/dhclient.8.gz ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

This means that the root account can easily run out of disk space when running greedy X software. Monsters such as KDE and Gnome are not suitable for running from the root account. In my opinion it is not a good idea to run any X-windows manager from the root account i.e. no startx or xdm logins from root. If you want the convenience of X from a privileged account then run X and KDE or Gnome under a normal user with membership of the 'wheel' group and then 'su' to root. (A possible alternative is to setup a second privileged account with a home directory under /home and work from this. You probably already have such an account under the login name 'toor' but you will need to move its home directory and give it a password.) Buildworld takeing a long time in 5.2.1
Hi, I have two dual processor systems with PIII 450 MHz processors both have internal SCSI 9 GB disk on Adaptec 2940UW controlers. One is installed with FreeBSD 4.9-STABLE and 1024 MB ram the other has installed FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT wit 512 MB ram, both boxes have 1GB of swap but neither has ever used anything but the absolute minimum. The 4.9 server has cvsup installed to sync the src, ports and dev repositories, this is NFS mounted to the 5.2 server and extracted to a local copy of the 5 src tree. The 4.9 box extracts the RELENG_4 src locally. On a frequent basis I buildworld and kernels for all my servers, currently on the 4.9 box I buildworld in approx 1:03 hours and build 3 kernels in 30 mins. On the 5 box I buildworld and it takes 4.5 hours and takes 1 hour to build 1 kernel. This not a problem as it all happens automatically over night, but I am just interested in why the disparity of the timeings Thanks for any information. Cups printing problem
I am trying to print from a FBSD client to an FBSD print server running the latest version of Cups. I can print from the printserver, but not across the local network. I receive this error from the Cups browser admin page: Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/hl1250 (recommended) Description: net-printer Location: Printer State: processing, accepting jobs. "Unable to get printer status (client-error-forbidden)!" Device URI: http://10.0.0.175:631/ipp/ It seems like the server is refusing the connection, is that the problem or is it something else. I tried putting an /etc/cups/cupsd.conf so that it will spool on the server, but it did not work. Is there something I need to enable or turn on, on the server to make network printing work? Simple Router on FreeBSD - Which should I use?

Yes. It's not obvious what's wrong. However, if donehup is non-zero, and logfile is not NULL but newlog is still NULL, then the fopen() in the signal handler must have failed -- and it should be quite simple to track that in a debugger or instrument the code to show that is what's happening. If it had failed, then the logging data would still go to the old log file, but that's not what was observed. I kind of wonder why it opens the new logfile, reallocates and populates a bunch of lookup tables in the signal handler, but then waits until the next time round main event loop to actually close the old logfile and switch to the newly opened logfile for writing the log data to. Why not leave the logfile open to the main loop as well? But I'm no expert on these things. On one of my machines, I'm running FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT (last built on Jan 15th, 2004). I recently purchased a "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop," which is a wireless setup with a PS/2 keyboard and a USB mouse (with a USB->PS/2 converter, if I need it). They don't work with FreeBSD. I've got one and spent ages searching the mailing lists and Google and it would appear that no-one can make them work. Apparently Logitech cordless mice work and, as you say below, the corded version of the MS mice do, but not the MS cordless ones :-( FWIW, I _suspect_ that it may be to do with the fact that the Intellipoint s/w that drives these things under Windows can report the battery status, which must be transmitted from the mouse, and it could be these messages that is "confusing" the USB (or mouse) driver under FreeBSD - the fact that the corded versions work supports this theory. [snip] Plugging the mouse cord on the wireless receiver into the PS/2 mouse port doesn't seem to have any effect on the matter -- the system detects a mouse on the psm0 port, but it still doesn't respond to movement. Ah, now that _does_ WFM, and that fact makes me suspect that the problem lies with the USB driver rather than the mouse driver. What are your mouse settings in rc.conf and XFree86config? I really think it would be worth getting this problem solved as MS cordless mice are very popular. Device drivers are beyond my capabilities but if there are any USB driver hackers in the UK (Nick Hibma?) who would be interested in getting them working then I am prepared to lend them my mouse for a couple of weeks. However the partition where > /var/log/ipflog resides gradually fills up, until 100% full. Curiously, > killing ipmon process releases back the space taken. Yes. This is one of those unixy things that makes a great deal of sense only after you've stopped and thought about it for a while. What's happening is this: ipmon has an open filehandle onto the logfile it's writing. Which means that even if you delete the file or overwrite it in the filesystem, the kernel still sees that file as active and doesn't free up the space it takes until the ipmon process closes the file. There's a conceptual difference between a file name -- which is just an entry in a directory structure with a pointer to the file's location -- and to the file itself. A file can have many different names in many directories so long as they are all on the same filesystem -- this is the concept known as 'hard linking' as described in ln(1). A file is only deleted once all filesystem links to it have been removed and all open file descriptors on it have been closed. > Adding /var/run/ipmon.pid at the end of newsyslog.conf line above stops > the above symptom, but ipmon stopped logging after each rotation. This should be the correct thing to do: ipmon should interpret a HUP signal to mean 'reopen log files' -- unless it's changed dramatically between 4.x and 5.x[*], in which case you'll have to hunt down what should be done instead by reading the documentation or the code or something. Have you tried recompiling without any extra optimization and without and CPUTYPE flags? Is your system up-to-date with the latest patches for whatever code branch you're tracking, and does your kernel match correctly with the system you're using (ie. they were both compiled from the same sources and you followed the procedure in /usr/src/UPDATING to do any upgrades)? Does the ipmon process actually quit when sent a SIGHUP? If the answer is yes to two or more of those, then it's worth using send-pr(1) to report this as a bug. As you have all the home folders in a central location, it would be easiest to replace every user's .xsession/.xinitrc files with one calling startkde. For new users to already have this custom file, place it in /usr/share/skel/ with a name of dot.xinitrc resp. dot.xsession. But there are other solutions: One thing to consider is using a graphical login managager like {k,g,x}dm, in case you don't already do so. {k,g}dm allow the user to chooser their session. Adding new sessions to the list is pretty straightforward - just take a look at gdm.conf resp. kdm.conf files and the respective documentation. If xdm is used you could modify its Xsession file: remove the part where ~/.xsession is started and simply have it launch kde. Yet another way would be to simply replace twm with a symlink pointing at the startkde script. Finally, I suggest you check out cfengine (also in the ports), which makes central administration of a network quite easy. Cfengine also has macros to easily modify every user's ~/.{xsession,whatever} file. Additionally, you might want to consider using CVS to keep track of your configuration files (or/and the configuration files of cfengine). Of course, external SCSI enclosures are quite standard in Server environment, and single disk cases are quite cheap on ebay... So SCSI will work without problems. Booting from other external disks depends on the technology: When there are enclosures, that map themselves as SCSI, like some IDE things, yes. With Serial ATA, we also will see some external storages, once fitting controllers are widespread. But what you have in mind, is probably USB and firewire. This depends on 2 things: 1) The BIOS of the PC has to know about these devices, and has to try to bootstrap from them. 2) the OS has to know, that it is run from a different device like traditional IDE/SCSI, because USB looks different. As far as I know, FreeBSD is not capable of fully booting from external USB storage, but I haven't followed the development in the last few months there. KDE 3.2/Xwindows dying strangely without warning
Ok, I can't contribute this to anything I've ever encountered or something that I'm doing, but it seems that after about 7-10 days KDE just dies on me. No crash, no errors, no "I'm gonna shut down". Nothing. I will be working along and then suddenly it's just not there. It just goes away without a single bit of warning. So I login under my user account at the console that's now staring at me and only the basic processes that should be running just after startup are there, but not a single Xwindows thing, or anything related to KDE. Even the logs show nothing. No core dumps, no memory errors, not even an Xwindows shutting down message. It's just like Xwindows and KDE were never running in the first place. I can then restart KDE and it goes back to the same saved state from the last time kde was restarted as though nothing had happened. I'm seriously baffled. This just started about 2 weeks ago after my last reboot. Anyone got any ideas? None of my other boxes do this, so I'm lacking other systems to use as examples. Any help is apreciated. Here's the apps I have running at the time it goes away/dies. BitTorrent Mozilla (for work related webpages) FireFox (for personal surfing) XMMS (playing) Knotes Klipper Krusader Kedit 3 console windows Gaim Kmail That's it. ipmon fills up partition
Dear list, I use ipfilter exclusively in all the FreeBSD systems I ever set up / administer since FreeBSD 4.x at least. In addition, in all my systems I have a habit of logging ipfilter to a different file, by using the following setting in /etc/rc.conf:- ipmon_enable="YES" ipmon_flags="-D /var/log/ipflog" and rotating it in newsyslog.conf:- /var/log/ipflog 640 7 1000 * J Reason for this is I also turn on /var/log/all.log (logging everything), so default ipmon settings tend to clutter the logs. Anyway, since FreeBSD v5.x (been using it since a while before 5.0-RELEASE), in at least 3 of the machines I administer, rotation works fine, and ipmon resumes logging afterwards. However the partition where /var/log/ipflog resides gradually fills up, until 100% full. Curiously, killing ipmon process releases back the space taken. Adding /var/run/ipmon.pid at the end of newsyslog.conf line above stops the above symptom, but ipmon stopped logging after each rotation. My last resort is to cook up own rotation, as some ppl have done here:- http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=br00p7%24b9o%241%40FreeBSD.csie.NCTU.edu.tw&rnum=5&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Dipmon%2Brotation%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26scoring%3Dd But before that, any other ideas? English is:) (I mean, reading the draft standards is a good idea; though they can't be regarded as manuals, they have valuable examples and notes). Learning assembly has the added advantage of knowing (at least basically) what happens when you do a dynamic_cast<>(), for instance. Assembly doesn't have to be portable to be usable this educational way. At least for me, this is necessary to be sure of what I'm doing in C++. This doesn't mean that to understand a C++ program, I have to convert it to assembly:). It just means that, when I face a problem, I can dig into the details and find out what I've done wrong, etc. OO means a high level of abstraction, and if part of the levels are floating in the air with nothing to support them, you sooner or later will face problems --- the problems of your misunderstanding how it works. I don't mean you have to write every program in assembly, but if you understand how it works --- it certainly helps. It looks to me as if you've discovered quite a tricky bug here. It's not clear from the symptoms you describe if the fault is in the OpenLDAP code, the code of any of the dependencies it links against -- although I think your testing of BDB vs LDBM has eliminated those as suspects -- or the underlying FreeBSD system libraries. Neither is it clear if the problem is a coding mistake in any of those projects, or perhaps a bug in the compiler. Now, I assume that egregious errors due to being on a 64bit rather than a 32bit platform are not likely to happen in the OpenLDAP code, since it runs on any number of 64bit platforms like solaris-sparc. Subtle errors are a different matter. AMD64 is now a tier-1 platform on FreeBSD, which means it's been through a lot of testing to prove it's stability and correct operation, but that status is new with 5.x, so there are undoubtedly plenty of bugs still there to fix. 5.x is also using gcc-3.3.x as the system compiler, again in a large part for the ability to support the new tier-1 platforms. In other words it's pretty hard to even predict which of those areas is most likely to be the cause of the problem. As Kris said, running the program under a debugger -- in the hands of an expert programmer -- will be the best route towards dignosing the problem and finding a cure. If you're not capable of doing that sort of thing yourself, finding such a person will be your best route to a proper fix. If you need the LDAP server for business purposes, then offering payment would not be out of order. In the mean time, you need a work-around. I'm not sure if you can run FreeBSD 5.x in 32bit mode on an AMD64 box, but that might be a thing to try. Compiling the software with different versions of gcc (there are several available in ports) and with different optimization levels is worth a go. Failing that, probably the best thing would be to find a spare IA32 machine and use that for your server temporarily. or even (horrors!) try a different OS on your AMD64 box. OO languages can be optimized differently than non-OO languages, and when you translate one language into another, this advantage gets lost. My smb.conf file is simple and allows for members of 'wwwdev' access the directory, and they can when i test it, but we get all kinds of problems with the permissions on various files and directories: // [wwwdev] comment = Virtual Web Servers HTTP dirs path = /usr/wwwdev create mode = 0765 valid users = @wwwdev // i assume this is a ownership issue on the unix file system side, although i have opened up the permissions to 'pants down in public' level drwxrwxrwx -rwxrwxrwx ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
