Invalid partition table after sysinstall modifications
Hello, I've got a 4.9-STABLE system that was dual-booted between FBSD and Win2K. I had no further need for the windows slice so I used sysinstall to delete the NTFS slice, write it as type 165, newfs'd it, mounted it, and wrote a bunch of data to the new ufs slice. So far so good... About 8 hours after this procedure the system hung, I rebooted and received the message, "Invalid partition table" I was able to boot the system with a FreeSBIE live bootable CDROM and fsck all the ufs slices. The data on all slices appear to be good, but I cannot figure out how to get this box to boot again. I've google'd and read the appropriate handbook sections. This box isn't that important and I could just copy off the data I need and re-install the OS. However, I'd like to figure out what went wrong and fix it the *right* way. Re: ahc reports lots of pci parity errors
Hey buddy, did you ever resolve the data parity error issue? While investigating your free-bsd list I discovered another person had encountered the same problem (see 1- below). Their solution seems to implicate an ISA card. However, I found a reason and a solution at the following address: orange.kame.net/dev/cvsweb.cgi/kame/freebsd5/ sys/dev/aic7xxx/ aic7xxx_pci.c?rev=1.1.1.2 * * Disable PCI parity error checking. Users typically * do this to work around broken PCI chipsets that get * the parity timing wrong and thus generate lots of spurious * errors. The chip only allows us to disable *all* parity * error reporting when doing this, so CIO bus, scb ram, and * scratch ram parity errors will be ignored too. */ PLUG, so my question to you is how does one disable parity error reporting and what could be detrimental in doing this? As I was reviewing this mailing I took heed of the last message at thebottom: On lot of motherboards I've seen some PCI slots share a single interrupt. I don't know if this is the case with your motherboard, but if it is then I can certainly imagine it causing problems. So I will save this message and restart and see if any devices have the same IRQ.. I opened BIOS and found ACPI IRQ = 10; however that could be changed to 9 or 11. I also found IRQ 10 assigned to PCI/ISA PnP but found I could change that to Legacy ISA (which I did).and restarted the computer.. and got the same error. (did I do this right?) So now I will unplug the ISA card. this isn't the problem. I now am certain that the data parity timing is wrong. -- <:-)Mike(-:> 1- Hiho! :-) I'm getting lots of those, but my system is stable. ahc0: PCI error Interrupt at seqaddr = 0x ahc0: Signaled a Target Abort ahc0: WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING ahc0: Too many PCI parity errors observed as a target. ahc0: Some device on this bus is generating bad parity. ahc0: This is an error *observed by*, not *generated by*, this controller. ahc0: PCI parity error checking has been disabled. ahc0: WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING ahc0: PCI error Interrupt at seqaddr = 0x I'm running 5.2.1-RELEASE with ACPI disabled. A broken PCI-card? Motherboard? TIA :-) Bye Marc Maybe a problem with the ISA-to-PCI bridge on your motherboard, or else a timing problem. You aren't playing with the bus frequency multipliers, overclocking, or anything like that, right? It's a Tyan Thunder X with two PII-Xeon 450Mhz, nothing overclocked. > Dump the ISA soundcard for a PCI one and you'll probably do better... Yep, just removed it. But as i wrote above I still get sporadic parity errors even without that old isa-card. Any idea what might cause those? Bye Marc Hmm, I narrowed it down. It starts going havoc if there are more than 4 PCI cards inserted. If the fifth card is a PCI card, I get lots of errors and even lockups really soon, if the fifth card is an ISA card, i get less errors and I've only encountered one lockup until now. I've two NICs and two graphic-cards (all PCI), ide-controller onboard and scsi controller onboard. Is this behaviour something that might be expected with this kind of setup or is it a sign of defective/failing hardware (buggy/broken southbridge, as Chuck suggested)? TIA :-) Bye Marc On lot of motherboards I've seen some PCI slots share a single interrupt. It was just updated today with changes provoked by this conversation. I feel that it's much better at explaining how things work now, but I'd be interested to hear feedback from someone like yourself, who is having difficulty. So, now I am trying to run - crontab crontab in my non-root user directory, as the non-root user, and it fails with this- "crontab: crontab: No such file or directory" The second "crontab" in that command is the filename of a file to use as input when creating the crontab. It doesn't appear as if you've created such a file. If you want to create one from scratch, "crontab -e" might work better for you. I tried - crontab -u chip crontab -e (with and without the -e) also and it failed with the same message. So I then su'd and tried again and got the same message again. The I tried - /etc/crontab -u chip crontab (with and without the -e) and get permission denied, as root. I am running 5.1-Release, and a standard default install. Rc.conf, dmesg.boot, ppp.conf, ppp.log, firewall rules, output from ps ax command while user ppp is running. Probably the starting point for testing a new installation is to look at the output of: #qmailctl stat to make sure everything is running properly. All uptimes should be > 1 second and identical or very close to it. You should see lines for at least qmail-smtpd and qmail-send and their respective logs. I have not installed from source by my self, I found that all programs where avalible thru ports. I will make this as sort as possible, There is disagreement between the author of qmail and the port maintainer about where the service directory should go. djb says /service whereas the port maintainer says /var/service and this can lead to strange mixed installations, especially when you've been following installation or configuration guides that are not specific to FreeBSD. Check that you only have one or the other. If qmailctl stat does not show enough processes, this might be why. I set up vpopmail with domain "setiathome.birch.se". The domain is "birch.se", fqdn is "setiathome.birch.se" for the host. I didn't how ever install everything. I didn't install ezmlm-idx and auotrespond, but its not vital for the operation of the mail-server at this time. That should be fine. I had this problem, that i couldn't send message to the FreeBSD mailinglists, but I solved it by adding my ISP outgoing smtpserver to /var/qmail/control/smtproutes. Perhaps it hade something to do with reversed DNS. I don't think this list checks reverse DNS. Could you send mail anywhere else? Some ISPs do not allow e-mail to be sent through their network unless their smtp server is used, as an anti-spam precaution. Here are my directory listing from /var/qmail/control/: defaultdomain plusdomain smtproutes locals rcpthosts virtualdomains locals.lock rcpthosts.lock virtualdomains.lock me servercert.pem In the file defaultdomain and plusdomain are the string entry "birch.se". In the me file there are the hostname of the mail server. And finaly in the "virtualdomains" file are the string: "setiathome.birch.se:setiathome.birch.se" That means you're expecting to receive mail addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED], not [EMAIL PROTECTED] - is that what you want? There should also be an entry in rcpthosts, just the domain name, setiathome.birch.se in this case. Have you made these entries by hand? You shouldn't need to since you are running vpopmail (see below). My problems is that I can connect to port 25. The problem is that nothing happens, look below: Make sure that qmailctl stat gives the right output before going any further. How ever, in the first chapter of the guide. It says the following at "1.6 courier-imap Hack" : "Because the SMTP after IMAP4(s)/POP3(s) of courier-imap does not work, here is a small wrapper. This "hack" tracks the IP of the authenticating user and allows for SMTP sending (i.e. a form of authenticated SMTP relay)." Perhaps that have something to do with that it doesn't work. I'm not sure how... Problem nr 2. The other problem is that I have a user named "thrawn" that is a local user on the system. The home directory of the user is "/usr/home/thrawn". And the the Maildir diretory is "/usr/home/thrawn/Maildir". When I connect to my mail via imapd-ssl, It uses the local user Maildir. This is a big problem. There shouldn't be a Maildir in this directory, if you set up the domain properly under vpopmail. Use the vpopmail binaries to add domains and users (see below). Secondly, it seems that imapd-ssl is not using the right authentication module. It needs to use something that checks with vpopmail and then shows the correct directory. Perhaps consider using courier-imapd instead; it's written by the same people who produced vpopmail and integrates well with it. But I have a domain for vpopmail at the following directory "/usr/local/vpopmail/domains/setiathome.birch.se" If you're using vpopmail and it has been set up properly and knows about the domain, this is the start of the directory tree where mail should be placed. And there I also have a user named "thrawn" and with the same password as the local "thrawn" account. If I understand it correctly for some reason courier-imap doesn't use my virtual domain, but it does use the local user. Im sure that it might be me that I have done something wrong or the documentation is not completly correct. See below. Perhaps I should use another domain name and se

I see you are using bge(4) devices -- there's nothing in the polling(4) or bge(4) man pages to suggest that the bge interface does support polling, and the code in /usr/src/sys/dev/bge makes no reference to the DEVICE_POLLING cpp macro, so it's unlikely to help with that hardware. Assuming you've got suitable hardware, whether device polling gains you much, or anything at all depends on the nature of the traffic you're dealing with. There are about dozen kernel tunables that you can use to optimize traffic flows. See the polling(4) man page for more information.
