I've heard that Gentoo's package management system "Portage" is
inspired by FreeBSDs ports, but I believe it's a bit of work to
install and compile a working system.

I've been using Debian based Kubuntu on my laptop, and find the
package management excellent. The installation and maintenance is
easy. It's my choice when I want to install and go.

Thanks, I didn't know Kubuntu / Ubuntu was Debian based. I like Debian
but the distribution always seems to be stuck in last year, It's still
using a 2.4 kernel, XFree86, and KDE 3.3!

Anyways, Kubuntu 6.06 Beta2 appears to meet most of my requirements so
I'll give it a whirl.

I like it. They do keep quite up to date. It is geared for the
masses and as such there will be some stuff you don't need but it
works on my sons PIII 450 with 6GB hard disk and 256MB RAM and the
Install is easy and painless.

(If you need a really trim system you can do a server install and
then install KDE separately, then you'll bypass the Kubuntu value
added features)

This is not the answer to your problem, but there is an extension called
session saver that saves your firefox session just as you left it (with all
the tabs intact). You can save as many sessions as you want and reload the

Samba shares and logging in

2006-03-22 Thread Vayu
In windows when I have the same user account on two machines, neither needs to
login to access the share. With Samba I have to use the username/password.
The XP machine can get straight into the FreeBSD machine (which has the same
username and password) but the FreeBSD machine needs to login to access the
XP share.

Are there any Samba settings that would allow the FreeBSD machine the ability
to access shares without logging in if (and only if) the user exists on both
computers?

I don't know about how your window system shuts down, but from the command
line I had the same problem. I was using "shutdown -h now" and it would give
me the same message that the system was halted, press any key to reboot. I
later learned that "shutdown -p now" would shut the power off as well. Maybe
your window system is doing the equivalent of -h instead of -p.

I use the fglrx driver on my laptop in Linux with an ATI x300 mobility. It
does hardware OpenGL just fine. I noticed this thread where that driver has
been ported to FreeBSD. Maybe you could try that.

http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=37837

I have two FreeBSD desktop machines that have 3D support through nVidia. I
downloaded their latest driver for FreeBSD from their website (I think 8178)
and it compiled on both my machines perfectly. One has the 6600 and another
has a 6600GT. Both are excellent price/performance. I have a lower end 6200
which is also great and pretty inexpensive. I haven't used it on FreeBSD but
it uses the same driver, so it should work just fine.

Why did this work? (Flashplugin)

2006-02-22 Thread Vayu
I installed linuxpluginwrapper, linux-flashplugin-6 and linux_base-8 through
ports. No errors. Created a libmap.conf with values appropriate for 6.0REL.

I followed the same procedure that I did 3 weeks ago that successfully got
flash playing in Konqueror on another FreeBSD 6.0REL machine.

Neither Konqueror nor Firefox would acknowledge flash (wouldn't play it,
didn't show it in about:plugins, nor give any errors when called from the
command line).I deinstalled, reinstalled, I looked up each lib referenced
in the libmap.

Finally I made a link from the libflashplayer.so
in /usr/X11R6/lib/linux-flashplugin6 directory
to /usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins. That worked for Firefox (1.5) but not
for Konqueror.

Why did that work (what went wrong in my installation) and now what do I do to
get Flash playing in Konqueror?

Post install help

2006-01-19 Thread Vayu
I just did my first install, so far so good. I've got KDE running. I
know how to play around with xorg.conf and got my screen resolution
matching my monitor. My network is working to the router. Now I would
like to get my graphics and sound cards working.

Where can I find out about getting an nVidia driver installed (I have a
6600GT)?

Where can I find out about getting my sound card working (sound blaster
Audigy 2)? Right now I get no sounds anywhere in KDE.

How can trace my permission errors when I try to access my CD player in
KDE? (All I know about so far is to add myself to the wheel group to
get su)

Is there a good source of HowTos anywhere?

Any help would be appreciated
