Thanks, I didn't know Kubuntu / Ubuntu was Debian based. I like Debian but the distribution always seems to be stuck in last year, It's still using a 2.4 kernel, XFree86, and KDE 3.3! Anyways, Kubuntu 6.06 Beta2 appears to meet most of my requirements so I'll give it a whirl. I like it. They do keep quite up to date. It is geared for the masses and as such there will be some stuff you don't need but it works on my sons PIII 450 with 6GB hard disk and 256MB RAM and the Install is easy and painless. Samba shares and logging in
In windows when I have the same user account on two machines, neither needs to login to access the share. With Samba I have to use the username/password. The XP machine can get straight into the FreeBSD machine (which has the same username and password) but the FreeBSD machine needs to login to access the XP share. I downloaded their latest driver for FreeBSD from their website (I think 8178) and it compiled on both my machines perfectly. One has the 6600 and another has a 6600GT. Both are excellent price/performance. I have a lower end 6200 which is also great and pretty inexpensive. Why did this work? (Flashplugin)
I installed linuxpluginwrapper, linux-flashplugin-6 and linux_base-8 through ports. No errors. Created a libmap.conf with values appropriate for 6.0REL. I followed the same procedure that I did 3 weeks ago that successfully got flash playing in Konqueror on another FreeBSD 6.0REL machine. Neither Konqueror nor Firefox would acknowledge flash (wouldn't play it, didn't show it in about:plugins, nor give any errors when called from the command line).I deinstalled, reinstalled, I looked up each lib referenced in the libmap. Finally I made a link from the libflashplayer.so in /usr/X11R6/lib/linux-flashplugin6 directory to /usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins. That worked for Firefox (1.5) but not for Konqueror. Post install help
I just did my first install, so far so good. I've got KDE running. I know how to play around with xorg.conf and got my screen resolution matching my monitor. My network is working to the router. Now I would like to get my graphics and sound cards working. Where can I find out about getting an nVidia driver installed (I have a 6600GT)? Where can I find out about getting my sound card working (sound blaster Audigy 2)? Right now I get no sounds anywhere in KDE. How can trace my permission errors when I try to access my CD player in KDE? (All I know about so far is to add myself to the wheel group to get su) Is there a good source of HowTos anywhere?
