AMD Athlon XP 3200+ and reboots under load...
Hello list. I am in the process of doing a major upgrade to my home server. I purchased an Asus A7V600-X motherboard, an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ processor, and installed 1GB of DDR 400 memory. If it matters, I've got two 120 GB Maxtor HDDs in a RAID 1 array. The problem I'm having is that the system reboots half-way through a make buildworld. I'm guessing this has to do with heat, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any insight? I've tried telling the BIOS to ignore the proc/mobo temp. Not sure yet if that's working. Tell the bios to set off an alarm at a high temp, and use sysctl -a | grep thermal to get your temps. What kind of power supply do you have? Have you changed or checked other bios settings? I don't see any settings in BIOS regarding alarms and such. All I can do in BIOS is monitor the temp and fan speeds. SmartPass VPN Software.
Hey all, Is there anyone that's tried installing/porting the VPN software SmartPass? I need it to log into a VPN, and they simply told me, 'yeah, it works on unix.' Problem is, it only supports Solaris and RedHat. When I try to run the binary, I get the following error: %smartpass ELF binary type 0 not known. Abort % Any ideas? Thanks. Hey all, I am wanting to venture into the world of IPv6, but I don't really know where to begin. AFAIK, I only have IPv4 routes out of my network, on a 1.5/1Mbps DSL connection, with a bunch of static IPs (IPv4). There's actually a very simple process to use to upgrade, providing you have a broadband connection: 1) cvsup your sources to the newer sources. For more information read about cvsup or checkout the handbook! 2) once you have new sources, cd to /usr/src and type make world; this could take an hour or more 3) if this completes OK, cd to /usr/src/sys/i386/conf (on 386-based processor systems) and type: # config GENERIC (or whatever your kernel config file is) 4) type: # cd ../../compile/GENERIC (or name of kernel config file) # make; make depend; make install 5) if this completes OK, type: # shutdown -r now 6) once rebooted, login, and check uname -a. Hello all. Perhaps there are some differences in the 5.x series for serial port options that I'm not aware of. I plugged in a null-modem cable, and opened HyperTerminal on my laptop. I added a boot.config file in my root directory on the freebsd system with the one line: -P Great news. I unplugged the keyboard and mouse and kept the monitor plugged in just for measure. I loaded hyperterm and watched as the system detected the missing keyboard/mouse and I began to see text on my terminal. Everything loaded fine, until the login prompt. Last thing I saw was the current time and date on hyperterm. On the monitor was the login screen. I couldn't even log in via ssh. If I boot with a keyboard/mouse, I get a normal system and I can log in via ssh. Please help. Jack, What I find usually works for me is a simple script that checks to see if natd is running. If not, it reloads natd after flusshing all the rules. I usually set this script to run every 5 minutes or so. You can change that to match your needs. I've managed to do everything here remotely from my own console, including reboots when updating the OS requires it -- that is except when reconfiguring the natd.conf file to add another forwarding service. I can reboot and it comes up okay, but rather would avoid a reboot. BUT, if I try to kill/restart the natd daemon remotely, it kills my SSH session -- no restart of NATD -- cannot log back in and that means a 30-min trip for someone to the colo. That gets old and rather just reboot which is a lot less inconvenient. Obviously, when I do the kill of natd, it disconnects my SSH session and I can't restart the daemon so it can reread the natd.conf file for my changes. I've tried a background script, but that hasn't worked either. Perhaps a second session would stay alive either SSH or even a telnet session just for the duration for this event??? Or a better background script...?? I'd rather not do any uninformed guessing/gambling on different techniques to cause a lock out. Well, they can do anything most other laptops can do. They actually come with built-in digital media readers. If your satellite phone has an interface that appears/functions and either a data port or a modem, then it should work. Notebook Mouse and 5.x
Hello, I'm still using 4.x, but I'm really aching to move to the 5.x series. I've been successfully using it on my desktop since 5.0-CURRENT and now I'm using 5.1-RELEASE. I have a laptop that can get everything working ok, but I can't get my PS/2 port or the integrated touchpad to work. Does anyone have any ideas? I'd love to get 5.x running. Thanks, but no. I have always been able to get the mouse working, even in 5.x, but I can't get my integrated mouse working/touchpad working for my laptop. I can occaisionally get an external PS/2 to work, but it's not stable. I have to have it plugged in before I boot. Ian, I have the same graphics card, and XFree86 seemed to detect it automagically. I even have working GL drivers. Performance isn't the best, and the GL is a little choppy, but I'm not looking at gaming on this machine. Ziad, I've never entered any identifier other than the default. What I usually find works for me is simply running xf86cfg either from an xterm window or from within /stand/sysinstall. I let it run, once it's up, I simply quit. XFree86 has always been able to properly detect the necessary settings. Hey all, I sent an email a couple weeks ago about my posts being rejected with a 550: Message Content Rejected. Someone directed my to www.ordb.org and pointed out that the IP address of the mail server I'm using was listed as an open relay. Resolution problems in x and CLI
Hello all, Ive got a couple of questions regarding resolutions. First, is there a way to increase/decrease the resolution of the CLI interface? Ive got a laptop that only seems to use the center 1/3 of the screen, Im thinking 640x480, where my native resolution is 1024x768. My next question refers to xfree86. Part of my log file seems to indicate X is running at 640x480, and another seems to indicate 1024x768. Is there a way I can test this for sure? Integrated touchpad on freebsd 5.1
Good morning, I gave up on doing the update from 4.9-5.1 and downloaded the 5.1 mini.iso and got everything installed ok. Not sure yet whether it will help with my pccard or not. My integrated touchpad and PS/2 port work great with 4.9, but seem to be completely disabled. I havent found anything via google about this problem, and I was wondering if there was something I need to enable in the kernel, etc. I need the GUI to work on this laptop for it to be worth anything for what I use it for. Continued 4.9-5.x upgrade problems.
Ok all, I've been working on this 4.9-5.x upgrade for over a week now, and I'm at my wit's end. I've been doing the make -NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld, etc. Everything works great until I do the make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installworld. It ends with the error that my kernel is not fresh enough and I get a core dump. I've tried a few different things, as listed below. I tried everything suggested by Mr. Stewart by doing the following sequence of events: 1) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld 2) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildkernel 3) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installkernel 4) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installworld I get an error on the installworld about my kernel not being fresh enough. So, I try the following: 1) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildworld 2) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true buildkernel 3) make NOLIBPTHREAD=true installkernel 4) reboot system, attempt to load /boot/kernel, failure Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Would it just be easier to do a binary upgrade via sysinstall? Is there a howto somewhere? Once I complete this, would it help if I write one? TIA, I won't have any hair left, soon, and I'm only in my early 20's. Also, does anyone know why my emails continue to be rejected from my laptop with the following error: Hi. If you are following -current, you should also be subscribed to the lists that deal with problems, such as cvs-all, hackers, -current, and etc. You can see the problem being addressed and then fixed. This used to be part of the suggested requirements for following stable and they definitely apply to current. Why bother doing nat? You *could* just setup a DHCP server on the gateway for the remaining IP address and when the other 14 machines came online, they could dynamically pull the IP addy. Just set some very strict rules on the incoming packets to the rest of the internal network. This is a similar thing to what I did when I had an 8-block from Qwest a couple years ago. Dawn, FreeBSD can most definitely meet the needs of your office, depending on what they are and what applications are available. For example, I'm not sure of what exact program is necessary, but I know there are Microsoft Exchange type server apps out there for FreeBSD, so the partners shouldn't even have to change their desktop machines, unless they all want to... The FreeBSD system can provide email, web server, fileserver, and proxy server access for a large number of clients, and 6 will definitely not be a problem. Send us an email on what, exactly your requirements are, and one of us will be able to help you set that portion up. Remember, FreeBSD is free to use, and it can't hurt trying to set something up, right? My problem is that I've got the newest version of GTK (2.3.4 I think) and newer versions of the four or five other dependencies. Is there a work around, or can I install old versions as well as new versions of these apps? Usually, windows will show up in the BSD boot manager as ???, so the boot prompt on my system (Win2K and FreeBSD 5.1) is the following: F1 ??? F2 FreeBSD When I've installed FreeBSD on a physically separate drive, it usually creates two boot menus similar to the following: F1 ??? F2 Disk 1 (pressing F2) F1 Disk 0 F2 FreeBSD As far as getting KDE to work, you should have the following in your user directory (usually /home/username) in the file .xinitrc exec startkde You can put other things in there, say if you wanted to start ymessenger or something similar as you load KDE.
