I'm in the same boat as you.  I just finished installing video4bsd + webcamd +
skype, and skype isn't able to detect the webcam, while pwcview works fine.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

MAC and JAILS

Hey all,

I'm trying to implement MAC within jails.  however any attempt to do
this from directly within the jail results in Operation not Permitted
messages.  With that, I assume root within the jail doesn't have any
capabliities of defining his own policies.  Can anyone confirm (or deny)
this?

I've never used ezjail, as I usually setup jails myself.  With that 
said, access to dev entries within jail are/can be controlled by devfs 
rules.  The configuration for your rules is administrator dependant.  
More specifically, you should find a line in your rc.conf that looks 
similar to the following:


jail_devfs_ruleset=devfsrules_jail

This defines the ruleset used for your jails.  Knowing this, you can now 
edit your rules file (/etc/devfs.rules) and add appropriate entries for 
your printer and associated devices.

That is not always true, as I've pointed out in response to one of your
use Windows, not FreeBSD emails before.  For example, I have seen
significantly better framerates for World of Warcraft using Wine than
using MS Windows XP, on the same machine.

  
Speaking of World of Warcraftcan ya install of CD's yet?  I know 
you can copy a already installed working copy...but it'd be nice of the 
CD eject was actually working.

NanoBSD :: smallest image size

Hello list,

I have an old machine I just acquired that I was thinking of replacing 
my current FreeBSD firewall/router with.  It's a Celeron 500+ Mhz 
machine with 32 Megs of ram, and a 10G hard drive.  I am(was) initially 
thinking about taking out the 10G, and using the flobby disk drive to 
boot off of.  I was familiar with PicoBSD years ago and know I could use 
that, but it seems that project has been discontinued.  After looking 
through archives to determine what to do, I can across nanoBSD as that 
seems to be included in the FreeBSD system by default, henceforth this 
question.  I couldn't find any information regarding the smallest image 
size possible using NanoBSD.  So the question is: can nanoBSD fw/ the 
proper configurations fit onto a floppy disk...and if not, is such an 
old computer bootable off of a usb stick?  How can I tell without buying 
one?

quite powerfull machine, it will run smoothly full FreeBSD installed on 
hard drive. i think it's much better solution.
  


Yeah, I realize it's more powerful than necessary to handle the 
task...though my current firewall/router is a 860+ Mhz PIII w/ 128 Megs 
of ram.  So, this would be a downgrade for my current firewall/router 
which allows me to repurpose the existing machine for something more 
computationally expensive.


Still though, I like information requested on nanoBSD (can it fit on a 
floppy), and how if booting off a usb stick is doable.  I imagine this 
has to do with later bios's...or not?

I think that it will be quite hard to make it running from floppy. If you don't 
want to install it on this HD (f.ex. because of noise) then you can replace 
HDD with Disk-On-Module or CF card with CF-IDE adapter.
With booting from usb on such rather old computers I had so many problems that 
I went for other options like these mentioned above.

so - downgrade. FreeBSD easily runs (full, not stripped) on 32MB RAM

I did consider running it off a straight cd, but I alter my routes 
enough through various tunnels I have established that this would be a 
pain.  (i.e. updating vtund configs)  The disk-on-module is spot on and 
that's what I'll probably use: $14 bucks for 128 Megs w/ NanoBSD I 
believe is goingn to suffice nicely.

I think you should be able to do it with a combination of -prune and 
-delete (or -exec rm -rf {} \; ) on a find command. Substitute your

I also looked at the xorg log file in:

  /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Interestingly it seems to detect the card  as a GeForce 9500 GT rather
than a 8500 GT (which makes me wonder whether I got the right info
from the vendor receipt):

But this should not be an issue because in the same log file it says
that both GeForce 8500 GT and GeForce 9500 GT are supported by the
nv driver.

Tomcat Debugging (OT most likely)

Hey all,

This question is probably best suited for tomcat-users, but being this 
is an a FBSD machine I'd figure I'd ask here first.  I have a client 
running apache w/ tomcat serving thousands of requests per second.  It 
works, but with one caveat, pages load extremely slowly.  When I first 
saw the request, I figured this client was running into some kind of 
resource bottleneck, but that's where my problems started.  I'm unable 
to find any resource that is being starved.  I turn to `the mighty list` 
for guidance.


This particular machine is running FreeBSD 6.2.  It has a bce network 
card that currently connected to a GigE switch with a 10G uplink.  Even 
with all this available bandwidth, this client's application *currently* 
is not doing any more than 50Mb/sec.  ::  Rule out network congestion.


Moving along to the system ram :: 2 Gigs are in the machine, with very 
little usage:

Mem: 724M Active, 874M Inact, 338M Wired, 64M Cache, 112M Buf, 4944K Free

A dual core cpu is in the machine, again with very little usage:
CPU states:  8.6% user,  0.0% nice,  3.9% system,  2.8% interrupt, 84.7% 
idle


Disk throughput is negligable at this time (50KB/sec :: 3tps).

I did start off mentioning this machine uses tomcat...so let me 
continue.  We've setup the java process to use libthr via libmap.conf:

And added the following to rc.conf::

thought was the slowness was due to quite possibly the cpu being 
hammered by numerous requests.  After checking however that's not the 
case, then I looked at the networking equipment with my networking team, 
that's ok too.  (I think) That leaves a) thread contention somewhere  b) 
apache misconfiguration and c) tomcat configuration.


Both myself and 2 other admins have looked over the apache configuration 
and tomcat configuration and we believe that side of things is probably 
ok.  That's leaves weird contention in the kernel or userland mutexes or 
something along those lines.


Here is our current connection count on the external interface ::

sockstat -4cp 80 | wc -l
997


Here is our connection count on localhost (from apache to tomcat process 
and vica versa) ::


sockstat -4cp 8009  | wc -l
   1679



And finally.top output:

in the wrong place , there seems not to be much in regard to seting up 
freebsd in a cluster, lots on linux. I have looked at the High 
Availability Linux project , I see on the front page that it will run 
on freebsd.


So I am a bit lost and i am wanting to learn how to cluster freebsd 
web and mail servers, I have looked at  Beowulf clusters, which seem 
to give computers more grunt, Can some on on the list please advise me 
on what clustering softwhere i need to get started and if the High 
Availability Linux project softwhere will do the job.



web links any thing to help me get started would be good. No I do not 
want to change over to linux.

I've used freevrrpd (/usr/ports/net/freevrrpd) for some clients with 
success.
Additionally doing some googling revealed SG Cluster 
(http://www.freebsd.org.hk/html/sgcluster/) though I'm not sure how 
active this is and/or really if it's what your looking for.

Headset w/ Mic Presario R3000

Hey all,

I've been using FreeBSD for many many years, but never have a tried to 
get a headset working under FreeBSD.  So, here's the deal.  I have an 
Altec Lansing Headset w/ mic hooked up to a FBSD 7 machine.  Generally, 
when connecting a sound device to the system, I just normally 'kldload 
snd_ich' and it will find the device and work out of the box.  Well, the 
onboard speakers work just fine.  However, after attempting  to plug in 
this headset, I am unable to a) hear from the headpeice, or b) speak 
into the mic.


It's not a usb or bluetooth headset, just your run of the mill headset 
to two plugs; one for mic and one for sound.  I've read the chapter on 
sound on the FreeBSD site, but that itself didn't provide any details 
about forcing the device to accept input from or output to the 
headphones and mic.

Update:

I was able to get sound coming into my headset.  Mixer had the answer.  
Now the only thing left is enabling the mic.  Anyone?

List them, not 100, not 399, all 400 please.

Keep in mind that when your download x.x.x release of a software package
you are downloading a patched source code. Sendmail has been patched
many times, Postfix is patched, Exim is patched. qmail just requires you
apply your own patches. Patching is not a bad thing, shrinkwrap mail
admins applying patches that they do not understand is a bad thing.

I'd personally vouch for Qmail myself.  Having been an administrator now 
for mail servers in general for nearly 15 years, with experience with 
most notable mailers, Qmail by far lends itself to be the most highly 
configurable mailer assuming you know what you want ahead of time.  Most 
experienced sysadmins, once they know what they want, can apply those 
patches to qmail with ease and roll out additional Qmail installations 
with a single package.  Very easy indeed.


However, in an attempt to remain as unbiased as possible (too late I 
realize) and just to reiterate, Qmail even though I believe it is a 
wonderful piece of software, you definately need to know what you are 
doing.  Postfix, exim, etc., take a lot of guess work away from the 
administrator by making assumptions that qmail doesn't make.  Some claim 
that this makes these packages better.  For this reason, especially if 
you aren't familiar with any mailer, I would suggest something other 
than Qmail.

The error stems from php5-mysql (or php4-mysql) being compiled against a
different set of mysql libs.  The easiest method for silencing the error is
to recompile the php5-mysql (or php4-mysql) port.

Quite truthfully, I forget a lot about case/esac most of the time.  It always
seems to elude me.  I guess it doesn't help that I'm a sed mongrel.

 Well, it's been 2 days now.  When will the code be updated
 in the FreeBSD ports?  The version on the Samba website is

 why can't they be integrated into the ports?

This has been said more than enough times, but people have jobs
that actually make them money, and henceforth their priority.

Resorting to negative comments doesn't make the testing phase of

 to use Samba.  Perhaps I should just load Windows on it?

How about working with the maintainer, testing patches, and helping
with the port?  That certainly would be more beneficial to the
community.

else), hopefully it provides you with good enough information and/or 
the information you were looking for.  Mind you, this is BSD and qmail 
(yes, I'm a fanboy) specific.  This assumes you are familiar with the 
software I decided to use under the components heading.  Certainly 
feel free to ask any questions.  I realize the document isn't 
production quality due to the reasons given about, but rest assured 
I can vouche for this method.

and the other 4 are FBSD 6.2.  The component list I used is as follows:


Components

tcpserver
daemontools
qmail w/ QMAILQUEUE patch
qmail-qfilter
spamassassin

Flow

This is the current flow of any emails that reach the cluster. Note 
the items listed within *'s are custom programs and explained later in 
this document:


tcpserver-qmail-smtpd-qmail-qfilter-spamc-*reject_spam*-qmail-queue-qmail-remote 



**Note :: reject_spam is included because that is needed for denying 
emails.  (You could rewrite it in perl or sh if you needed to)


Installation

The installation for any new and existing proxy boxes is extremely 
straightforward.


For all but qmail listed above, use the ports tree.

Setup spamd to create the /tmp/.spamd.sock socket.  That's what I call 
mine, yours can/will vary.


Once all this is installed, create /etc/tcp.smtp with the following 
entry and build the cdb file:

:+RELAYCLIENT=+QMAILQUEUE=/var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue-spam

Ensure tcpserver uses that file(i.e. -x)

While in /usr/ports/qmail.

 a) upload the attached files (patch-qmail.c and patch-Makefile) into 
./files/


 b) edit patch-qmail.c to reflect a message you would like to give.
   '+case 20: return DAnti-SPAM Threshold Reached see 
http://domain.com/legal_information.aspx;;'


 c) type: make extract

 d) type: make patch

 e)  copy the attached file (reject-spam.c) to ./work/qmail*/

 f) Now, I haven't included some of my patches here do to sensative 
information.  Therefore, you'll need to edit the Makefile 
(work/qmail-*/Makefile) to removed any and all references to 
check_block and reject-record-spam.


 g) type: make install

 h) copy reject-spam to /var/qmail/bin

  i) Copy the  attached shell script (qmail-queue-spam) to 
/var/qmail/bin/; that is going to tie this together.


Please note that it's NECESSARY to use the local software FW to allow 
relaying.  IPFW is a good choice (my preference anyways).  Deny 
everything to port 25, and  only allow the hosts you want.  I found 
this to be the easiest.

 Then on those hosts, smarthost the hidden (not really) machine.

Problem with Nat (port forwarding)

Hey all,

I've been spending hours trying to figure out why my machine at the office 
(Linux), cannot connect to my
FreeBSD (6.1) machine behind my nat'ed gateway.  This was working fine 
previously before my linksys
router decided to take a nose dive, so I am sure the Linux box that is 
attempting to establish the
connection is configured fine.

When the router crapped out, I decided to put all that old hardware I wasn't 
using for anything to
good use.  What I ended up with is a Pentium 3 200mhz machine with several 
network interfaces conncted
to my internet provider (BellSouth).  In order to continue working from home, 
it's necessary that I get
this tunnel up and running, and for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out 
what exactly I'm doing
wrong.  Here is my current configuration:

Do note, the interfaces housing the vtund application that I'm concerned with 
lives over the fxp0 interace.
In addition rule number 00301 triggers appropriately when a packet destined for 
port 5000 is inbound.  
/var/log/security makes no mention of anything being denied by this firewall 
ruleset destined for or
originating from port 5000 by any host.  This is certainly the case, as the 
host where vtund is running
is recieving packets from the gateway on port 5000 (info showing this follows). 
 I also see the vtund
box responding to the inbound packets, but it never creates the tunnel device 
as it should, and nothing
gets logged.

mfs_root booting problems

Hey all,

I've been having a problem that hopefully someone would be able to help 
me with.  I've been trying to boot FreeBSD via PXE for at least a couple 
of days now with no luck.  I've read several online guides none of which 
explain using a root mfs to accomplish this task.  Most of the manuals 
I've read go over mounting / as NFS which isn't ideal for me.


I've got mostly everything working *up to* the point where the system 
begins bootstrapping.  It loads the kernel, loads the mfs root and then 
the machine immediately reboots.  For the life of me, I can't figure out 
why.  I was hoping that someone has a documented method for initializing 
a FreeBSD system via PXE and without the use of NFS for the root filesystem.


For refernce my loader.rc:

it being disabled.

Assuming the mfs file sysetm is being create without error (I assume it 
is due to a lack of error messages), then I assume loader reads init 
like usual.

1 (FreeBSD), statically linked, stripped


And then continues on with /etc/rc

As for the rest of the filesthey are certainly all there.

I believe it's also worth mentioning, that if I use the mfsroot that 
comes with the installer, it loads/run fine.  Not sure if this helps any 
or not.


What could I possibly be missing?
